is all about celebrating light. However, we’re not celebrating light bulbs, torches, glow sticks or lanterns. We’re also not getting giddy about candles, bonfires, stars or even the Sun. Instead, we’re celebrating Jesus!

That might sound like a strange thing to say. What does Jesus have to do with light? Well, in a book in the Bible called John, Jesus says he is the Light of the World. Jesus knew that our world can be a very dark place, where sad and bad things can often happen. However, Jesus also knew that he was bringing light to the darkness of our world – he was bringing hope, peace and love! He was bringing a way for us to join God’s family. Did you know that Jesus still brings light to the world, even now? This Friday is 31 October, which is a day that’s also known as Halloween. Halloween has been taking place for around 2,000 years, and it’s a celebration of lots of dark and spooky things. However, we believe that the light of Jesus is something that’s so much better than anything freaky or creepy! So instead of taking part in Halloween, we’re choosing to get excited about Jesus. We’ll be colouring in the poster on page 11, giving out copies of Kids Alive! to trick-or-treaters and even going to a light party (which is a party to celebrate the light Jesus brings)! Will you celebrate the light of Jesus too?

Jesus said: 'I am the Light of the

World'

Check out pages 12 and 13 for some crafty light-themed activities

When Jesus came to Earth, he was a light that brought hope, love and kindness to a world full of darkness. If you’re a Christian, then it’s your mission to show Jesus’ light to everyone around you.

We can share Jesus’ light by showing love and kindness to others around us. That might mean including kids at school who are sitting or playing alone, holding open doors for others when you’re out or forgiving your friends when they make mistakes.

You can also share Jesus’ light by helping more people learn about him. Why not give a friend a copy of Kids Alive! or invite them to church with you? Or turn to page 11 of this week’s issue and add a splash of colour to our design. Then pop your creation in your window so that anyone walking past can see that you’re celebrating the light of Jesus this Halloween!

Have You Been Left Out?

Iused to play in a football team. To be honest, I was an awful footballer – I made kicking a ball look about as hard as flying a spaceship, and I was more likely to trip on my laces than to score a goal! Because I was so bad at footy, I very rarely got to play a game. I’d often have to watch from the sidelines. To be honest, I used to find it really hard to be left out.

The amazing thing about being a Christian is that it’s nothing like those games of football –nobody is left out! As this week’s Bible cartoon shows us, Jesus’ family is one that anyone can join. God doesn’t look at our height, weight, gender or the colour of our skin to decide whether we can be a Christian. Not only does he love us all equally, but he made us exactly as we’re meant to be!

Have you ever felt left out of something before? It can be a terrible feeling, can’t it? Well, if you’re a Christian then that means that you’ll never be left out of God’s amazing family. This is a family that stretches across the whole world, and it’s a family where everyone’s equal!

This also means that you have a really important job. You should make sure that you’re treating everyone around you with respect. Plus, you should never leave someone out just because they’re different to you. God loves you exactly as you are, so show that same love to the people around you!

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

Remember Jesus

When Paul was coming towards the end of his life, he was arrested for being a Christian. Then he was sent to a prison in Rome. While he was in prison, Paul wrote letters to churches he’d visited.

One letter, which was sent to a church in a city called Ephesus, was full of joy! Paul wanted to remind the church of everything Jesus had done for them – he had made a way for them to know God and had saved them from the trouble they deserved.

Because of what Jesus had done, the church should want to live in a way that would make God happy. They should do this by caring for one another as a community and by being well behaved. They should also want to please God in their families – fathers, mothers and kids should all love one another!

Ship Electrician!

Hi, I’m Nathanael and I’m 19 years old. One of my hobbies is sailing – I’m a sailing instructor. Earlier this year, I was working on a ship run by Christians called Logos Hope, and I’ll be working on it again next year. I was working in the electrical team as a trainee electrician, and one or two days a week, I would leave the ship to tell people about Jesus.

Each day at work was so different! Generally, I would be helping other engineers and electricians with fixing different parts of the ship. I might also help at a church with running their Sunday service or their children’s group. The best thing about my job was going to lots of different islands and working together with Christians from all around the world!

One day, if you’d like to work on a ship that travels the world to tell people about Jesus, you should pray about it! You could talk it through with parents, carers or church leaders. You could also watch videos about what other churches are doing around the world. If you want to focus more on being an electrician, you should work hard in school – particularly in subjects related to engineering, such as maths and science!

Create and Glow

If you’re searching for some crafty ways to celebrate the light of Jesus this Friday (31 October), then look no further!

We’ve put together two pages packed full of sun of … sorry, some of the most creative light-themed craft activities we could come up with. In fact, there are so many that we’ll be really impressed if you manage to candle … we mean, handle doing all of them!

What are you waiting for? Glow … sorry, go and get creative!

Tissue Paper Lanterns

For this awesome craft, you’ll need: a jam jar, pieces of tissue paper (preferably lots of different colours), PVA glue, a paintbrush and a battery-operated tea light candle!

Use your paintbrush to cover the jam jar with glue. Then take strips of tissue paper and stick them to the outside of the jar. The strips don’t need to be the same colour – your finished jar should be as colourful as a rainbow!

Once the jar is completely covered, set it aside for an hour so that it has time to dry. Then cover the jar with another layer of glue and wait for that layer to dry too. Turn on your candle and put it inside the jar. You now have a stunning tissue paper lantern!

Quick Craft Suggestion – Pumpkins!

People often decorate pumpkins for Halloween, so why not decorate a pumpkin to celebrate the light of Jesus? You could carve a symbol such as a cross into the pumpkin, or you could write things onto it that you’re thankful for.

Stained-Glass Windows

For this spectacular craft, you’ll need: a see-through plastic lid (the kind of lid you’d find on a Pringles tin), permanent markers, string and scissors!

On your plastic lid, draw different things that create light. You could also write phrases about how Jesus is the Light of the World. In fact, the more that you fit in, the cooler your finished creation will look.

Once your lid is covered with drawings, ask a grown-up to help you to poke a hole near the top of the lid with the scissors. Then thread a piece of string through the hole and tie the string together. This is so that you can hang your creation in a window at your home.

Your creation will now look a bit like a stained-glass window, which is a special window that’s often found in churches!

Quick Craft Suggestion – Stars

Bonfire Cake

For this delicious craft, you’ll need: a chocolate Swiss roll, chocolate icing, breadsticks, chocolate fingers and red and yellow fondant icing!

Firstly, cut the Swiss roll into thin slices. Then stack the slices so that you create a pyramid shape – this means that there are more slices at the bottom than there are at the top. Coat the pyramid with lots of chocolate icing.

Add chocolate fingers and breadsticks to the cake – the more the better! These will look like sticks in a fire. Don’t worry if any snap, as broken sticks are often used in bonfires.

If you have some spare cardboard in your home, you could cut out stars. You could then decorate these stars and write Bible verses on them (for a Bible verse we’d suggest 2 Samuel 22:29). You could then hand out your stars to your friends!

Finally, shape some red and yellow icing so that it looks a bit like flames, and then wrap this icing around some of the sticks at the bottom of the cake. You’ve now got a bonfire that you can eat!

Join us in celebrating the light of Jesus this Friday!
