HInternational Day of Friendship

ave you watched any lms at the cinema this summer?

If you saw Toy Story 5, you’ll know about two toys that are best pals – Woody and Buzz Lightyear! In Minions and Monsters, a pair of cheeky Minions called James and Henry have been friends for hundreds of years! And if you checked out Moana, then you’ll know that Moana and Maui are super close buddies (even if they sometimes bicker)!

These three lms show us how fantastic friendship really is, but we reckon you don’t need to go to the cinema to know that! Have you got any friends that make your life better? Perhaps you’ve got a pal who’s always getting you into ridiculous adventures. Or maybe you’ve got a buddy who cheers you up whenever you’re feeling sad.

If you’re thinking of a pal you’re particularly close to right now, why not thank them for being such a fab friend on Thursday 30 July? This day is also known as the International Day of Friendship. It’s all about celebrating how brilliant friendship is, and how friendship helps to make the world a better place. So take the opportunity to celebrate your friends this week, and to think about how you can be a great friend to the people around you!

A good friend makes everything better, don‛t they? A good friend shares with us, encourages us, forgives us and cheers us up if we‛re having a bad day – friendship is one of God‛s wonderful gifts.

Jesus had friends too, and he loved them. He laughed with them, helped them and cared for them. He showed us all what being a good friend is. He also told his friends that they should love each other like he loved them – that‛s what Jesus wants us all to do too.

too. help

Being a Christian means showing love every day, so that we can be like Jesus. It‛s not just our besties that need love either–we can show love to someone at school who is lonely, forgive a classmate after an argument or help someone who is struggling. When we treat others with kindness, we‛re following Jesus‛ example and sharing his love wherever we go.

Time to Choose?

wonder if you’ve ever ignored someone or ibehaved in a way they didn’t like. If so, how did they react? They might have got upset or angry, but did they stay sad or cross? Hopefully you managed to sort things out and you were forgiven.

In this week’s cartoon Bible story, God is upset. In fact, he’s angry. You see, the people have forgotten about him. They’ve been ignoring his rules that were given in love to protect them, and they’ve got themselves into a big mess. But God has a plan to sort things out – he chooses a prophet, Malachi, to deliver a message to God’s people and warn them to change their ways.

The whole book of Malachi is basically a conversation between God and his people, with

Malachi acting as a go-between. God reminds his people that he loves them and they question whether that’s true. So God explains how their behaviour is stopping them from knowing him and experiencing his love for them.

Is anything stopping you from knowing and experiencing God’s love? Maybe you’re not reading your Bible or you’re not talking to God in prayer. Perhaps you’re holding on to a grudge or you’re just not being as kind to others as you could be. I’m not here to give you any warnings, but I would encourage you to spend more time with God and work out how he wants you to live. It’ll be the best choice you’ve ever made.

God Loves You!

God loves you and wants you to love him too. Below are several statements –sort them into statements that show how God loves you and how you love God.

1. God created a world that has everything we need.

2. Always do your best to use your gifts and talents for God.

3. Make a decision to accept God’s love and choose to live the way he wants you to.

4. God wants us to spend time with him through reading our Bible and praying.

5. God provided a set of guidelines to help us live our best lives.

6. Be kind to others.

7. God sent his son, Jesus, to live on Earth and show us how to live.

8. Forgive people who have upset you or hurt you.

9. God gave up his son to die so that we could be forgiven for the mistakes we make.

10. Spend time getting to know and understand God by reading the Bible and praying.

The Shard

This brilliant building towers over London and visitors to the viewing platform on the 72nd oor can see for miles! The Shard is 310 metres tall, which makes it the tallest building in the UK. There are 84 oors in total, but only 72 are in use. If you look at the picture on the right, you’ll see that the building is covered in glass –11,000 glass panels, in fact, which are enough to cover 8 football pitches. It takes a team of six abseiling window cleaners to keep it looking its best – they tackle one side every week, then go back to the beginning.

As well as the viewing platform, there are also restaurants and a hotel in The Shard. The super swish hotel is pretty pricey though – rooms range in price from £450 to £14,000 a night! Wowzers!

DESIGN A POSTER

Our world is absolutely beautiful, but it needs our help to keep it that way! Threats such as deforestation, habitat destruction and pollution are causing serious harm to the planet – so we should do everything we can to look after it. It’s World Nature Conservation Day on Tuesday 28 July, which is a day all about raising awareness of the need to protect the environment. To take part in this special day, design a poster which is all about how important it is to look after our world! If you’d like to share your poster with other readers, email your design to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. Make sure you write ‘Design a Poster’ in the subject box and give us your full name, age and address. Alternatively, you can post your design to: Your Space, Kids Alive! 1 Champion Park, London SE5 8FJ. Spectacular Summer

International Day of Friendship Special

Out and About

If the sun’s shining and you and your friends are itching for something fun to get up to outside, try…

Having a Water Fight

Are you having the most amazing summer holiday ever, or are you nding yourself getting a little bit bored? Without long maths lessons, fab assemblies and bonkers lunchtime antics to keep you busy, you and your friends might nd yourselves struggling to know what to get up to. Here are some dazzling ideas to keep you and your pals entertained for the whole summer!

Water ghts are ridiculously refreshing on a sunny day. However, using water balloons can be harmful for wildlife, as it can take up to six months for balloons to decompose. Instead of using water balloons, use kitchen sponges!

Rather than spraying your pals with a hose, it’s a fab idea to ll up buckets with water. This means that you can make sure you’re not using too much water, which would be bad for the planet! To nd out more about how you and your pals can have eco-friendly fun with water, check out recyclecoach.com/blog/4-alternatives-to-water-balloonfights-with-little-to-zero-waste-sustainable-water-games.

Save It for a Rainy Day

Heavy rain, fierce wind – sometimes the weather’s so horrid you can’t go outside! The next time it’s a rainy day, try…

Creating a Jigsaw Puzzle

Putting together a jigsaw puzzle can be a great way of spending a rainy day, particularly if you’ve got some friends with you. However, have you ever tried making one before?

You could give each of your pals a sheet of paper or some cardboard from a cereal box, which they could draw awesome designs on (don’t forget to draw your own design too). Then you could all cut up your designs into small pieces, so that you’ve created jigsaw puzzles. You and your pals could then take it in turns to solve each other’s jigsaw puzzles!

Learn Something New

School might be out for the summer, but that doesn’t mean that your learning should stop! This week, let’s learn about…

Cooking

Do you know how to chop an onion or fry an egg? Cooking is an amazing skill to develop. Learning to cook at a young age can help you to form a healthy relationship with food, and it can help you to get better at following instructions!

Bite-size Bible

Now that you’ve got lots of free time, you’ve got the perfect opportunity to explore more of the Bible. We think you should check out…

Ephesians 4:32

Why not ask your parents or carers to teach you how to cook this summer? We’re not expecting you to become the next Jamie Oliver, but wouldn’t it be brilliant to make something tasty for your friends to enjoy? You can nd fab recipes at bbc.co.uk/food/collections/10_easy_recipes_for_kids

How easy do you nd it to forgive your friends? Sometimes your friends might do or say something that’s really hurtful. Instead of holding a grudge, this week’s Bible verse reminds us that it’s super important that we forgive one another!

Summer Journal

When we forgive people who’ve hurt us and when we show love to others, we’re acting like Jesus! Jesus is so kind and so compassionate. He loves us so much, so we should want to be like him by loving everyone around us!

Have you had any awesome adventures with your pals this summer? Use the space below to write or draw about what you got up to!

Stornoway’s Celebration!

Stornoway Salvation Army enjoyed a joyful weekend celebrating all their children and young people. This was particularly special because lots of new families have come to the church in recent months. The weekend began with a Saturday afternoon bowling outing, where children, parents and carers enjoyed having fun together. On Sunday, the church family gathered together for a special prizegiving – the first that has been held for many years! Each child received a Bible to help them in their faith journey. The weekend was led by the leaders of The Salvation Army in North Scotland, Majors Gillian Jackson and Steve Dutfield. What a wonderful celebration!

Here’s a turtley awesome colouring from Alfie, aged 7. Great work!

Yandiswa, aged 11, is definitely a mega artist –look at that umbrella! We love it!

These AwarenessSunWeek Colourings have reminded me to keep safe in the Sun – make sure you all do too!
