DEarth Day it's

o you know what the planet we live on is called? Its name in English is Earth. In Germany, it’s called Erde and in France it’s called Terre. In Indonesia it’s known as Bumi, and in China it’s known as Diqiu (which means ‘ground ball’). No matter how many different names people use for it, one fact about Earth is true for every single person in the world – it’s our home, so we should look after it!

It’s Earth Day this Wednesday (22 April), and this is a day all about recognising how important it is to care for our planet. This event has been taking place every year since 1970, and it’s encouraged people from all over the world to realise that they have a part to play in looking after the environment. This might look like writing letters to politicians to encourage them to fight climate change or going litter picking to clean a local area!

The theme of this year’s Earth Day is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’. This is because we, as people living on Earth, have the power to make important changes to our planet – if we’re willing to work together. So are you willing to work with your friends and family to protect our environment? Every action counts, which means you really can make a difference!

To find some ideas for how you can help to make a difference this Earth Day, check out woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2020/01/conservation-for-kids

My daughter sings in the junior choir at our church and one of my favourite songs that they sing is called ‘Power in Me’. Have a listen to this song online if you can. When I was reading about the theme of Earth Day this year (Our Power, Our Planet), this song kept popping into my head. The song talks about how all of us have the power to make positive changes in our world with God’s help – whether that’s by helping others around us or speaking up when we see problems that need sorting. Sometimes it might feel like you’re too small to make a difference, but with God helping you, you have his awesome power working alongside your own! And even small acts of kindness for our world can make big changes happen when we put them all together. So how can you use your power to make a difference this week?

Jesus is With You

When I brought my first daughter home from hospital after she was born, I was petrified! Suddenly I had this little baby to look after – I was full of doubts and felt like I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Thankfully I could call my mum, and after that I felt much calmer and I knew with her help I could do it.

In this week’s Bible cartoon, the disciples are feeling scared and doubting what to do next. They’d spent so much time following Jesus, but then he had been killed. Thomas even had doubts that Jesus was alive again and wanted to see some proof. So Jesus gave Thomas the proof he needed. Jesus wasn’t angry with Thomas because he had doubts. He understood what Thomas was feeling and wanted to help him.

After seeing Jesus, the disciples knew what they needed to do. Nothing had changed outside the walls of that room, but they knew that Jesus would be with them and help them with whatever they had to face. The job they had to do still wouldn’t be easy, but they knew Jesus would help them get through it.

I’m sure there have been times when you’ve been worried or had doubts, and that’s OK! Everyone feels unsure sometimes, but just like Jesus’ presence helped the disciples, he can be with you too. Jesus understands what you’re feeling, so share your worries and doubts with him and let him help you.

Read the comment on the left about sharing our doubts with Jesus

Below are some statements linked to this week’s Bible cartoon – some are true and some are false. Put a ‘T’ next to the ones that are true and an ‘F’ next to the ones that are false. Clue – read John 20:19–29 for some help!

1 The disciples were hiding in the room because they were scared

2 All the disciples had already seen Jesus and believed he was alive

3 When Jesus appeared to the disciples he said, ‘Peace be with you’

4 Jesus refused to show Thomas his hands

5 Jesus told the disciples to go and tell others about him

6 The disciples ignored what Jesus asked them to do

Bumper Bible Breakdown

Did you know the Bible isn’t one big book? It’s actually 66 books put together to tell one big story of God’s great love. Join us as we look at each Bible book and discover why God made the world, what went wrong and how in the end God saved the world through his son, Jesus.

All Things New

If you’re a Christian, then one day you’ll get to live with Jesus. If you’ve ever wondered what that might look like, the last book in the Bible, Revelation, gives us a great idea. At the end of the world, God will create a new Heaven and Earth – and these will be the home for God’s family!

It won’t be their home for just a few years, or even a few hundred years – it will be their home for ever! It will be absolutely perfect, and there’ll be a new Garden of Eden. Every Christian who’s ever lived will be with God, and they’ll be happy. There won’t even be any crying!

As we’ve looked through the Bible, we’ve seen how the world went wrong, and we’ve seen how Jesus died to bring us into God’s family. Because of what Jesus has done, Revelation shows us that anyone who follows Jesus has the most amazing future ahead of them!

HELLO, READERS, I’VE LOST A VERY IMPORTANT OBJECT SOMEWHERE IN THE ISSUE. WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO HELP ME FIND IT? I HAVE A CLUE OF WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE HERE.

Salvation Army Officer

Hi! I’m Lesley and my favourite thing ever is to spend time with my dog, Poppy – she’s a cockapoo and totally crazy. I’m also a Salvation Army officer, which is like a minister, pastor or vicar. My job involves lots of things, including telling people about God, helping and encouraging people and building a better world, especially in our local community. Every single day at my work is different! Our church has a busy food bank and I get the opportunity to help people who need food, and also introduce them to people who can help them in other ways. We also have a group for babies and toddlers where they can play and have fun, and a gardening group for grown-ups who want to improve their mental health by getting outside and enjoying our beautiful garden. I also love working with our young people and seeing them grow in faith.

The best thing about my job is seeing positive changes in people. They often come to us when they are feeling bad and I love being able to help them and see them go away feeling happy.

Being a Salvation Army officer is the best job in the world! If you’re interested and go to a Salvation Army church, talk to your leaders and find out more about the job. Also talk to God –if it’s the right job then the doors will open for you!

St George’s Day

Who’s a Christian in your life who inspires you? You might have a grandparent who’s kinder than anyone you know. Or perhaps someone at your church never fails to put a smile on your face!

Throughout the last 2,000 years, there have been so many inspiring Christians that it would be almost impossible to count them all! One of these inspiring Christians is a man called George. George is known as a saint, which is another way of saying he’s a Christian hero from the past!

Celebrating in England

This Thursday (23 April) is a special day known as St George’s Day. This day will be particularly popular in England, as St George is considered very important there. In fact, England’s flag, which features a red cross on a white background, is even named after him!

To celebrate St George’s Day, some people in England might take part in parades and small community events. They could make their way to Trafalgar Square in London, where there’s a St George’s Day festival.

If you attend a St George’s Day festival, you might see people doing something called Morris dancing, which is a traditional English dance!

Celebrating Around the World

However, St George’s Day celebrations won’t just be taking place in England. St George is well known all around the world, which means that St George’s Day is celebrated in places such as…

Spain! People across Spain take part in costume parades, and they retell stories from St George’s life. In Catalonia (which is a region in Spain), couples will give each other red roses and books!

Germany! St George’s Day is celebrated with a special event called Georgiritt. Locals ride horses to lots of nearby churches, and the horses are decorated with spectacularly bright colours!

Brazil! St George’s Day begins late in the afternoon, with a time for prayer and reflection. After this, there are often fireworks and light shows, as well as a service called mass (which is a way for Catholics to remember Jesus).

A Dragon and a Princess

So why do people celebrate St George? If you’ve heard of St George before, then you might have been told some utterly unbelievable (but pretty awesome) stories about him.

In old tales about St George, he was a knight who rode into a city called Silene. He battled a naughty dragon and even rescued a princess. The real story of St George’s life might sound a bit less exciting than this, but it’s actually super inspiring!

St George’s Story

St George wasn’t a knight, and he never visited England! He was probably an officer in the Roman army, and it’s believed that he died in the year 303. Why did he die? Well, it’s because George didn’t back down from being a Christian, even though Christians were often hated during George’s lifetime!

George was willing to stand up for what he believed in because he trusted in God. Although George didn’t actually fight a dragon, he was still incredibly brave!

Be Brave

When people think of St George, his bravery is often one of the first things they think of. That’s why a special award called the George Cross was created in 1940 for incredible acts of bravery or courage! If you’d like to celebrate St George’s Day, why not think of ways that you can be brave too? You might…

Stand up for others! If you see someone being bullied at school, or being treated unfairly, you could support them and talk to a trusted grown-up!

Learn about other brave people who stood up for what was right, such as Malala Yousafzai, Martin Luther King sand Greta Thunberg!

Tell your friends about Jesus! St George didn’t back down from sharing what he believed with others. Would you be willing to do the same?

Be brave on St George’s Day!

i thought that pirates were meant to be baddies, cap’n pete.

the pirates i’ve read about in books or seen in films are robbers of the high seas.

how come you’ve never done anything like that?

because i actually wanted to fly aeroplanes, not be a pirate.

unfortunately it was a bad line and i misheard them. it was a job as a pirate, not a pilot, they were offering me!

when i got a phone call offering me a job, i jumped at the chance.
