I loved science lessons at school, but as a grown-up I’ve come to take science for granted. So many everyday things we use rely on science. You’re probably not all that interested in watching the news, but for the last 12 months we’ve become used to hearing people say, ‘We’re following the science!’ And I reckon most people would agree that scientists have done a great job to help us stay safe, as well as discover treatments for coronavirus and develop awesome vaccines. Sometimes I take God for granted too and I have to remind myself that I can see and feel him through everyday things – my family and friends, the air I breathe, food and drink, nature. I wonder when you last thought about what God does for you. Make some time this week to thank him for all you have – you could thank him for science too.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW JESUS CHANGES PEOPLE FROM THE INSIDE OUT

More Than You Expect!

T

here’s a cool adventure in the movie Toy Story 2 that reminds me of this week’s Bible cartoon. Buzz and his friends set out to rescue Woody when he’s stolen by the owner of Al’s Toy Barn. They’re prepared to do whatever it takes – even crossing a busy road, climbing up a lift shaft and facing Evil Emperor Zurg! In the Bible story the paralysed man’s friends are also determined to help their friend, no matter what the cost. They’re willing to make a hole in a roof to get him to Jesus! It was probably really hard work breaking through that roof and I bet the owner of the house wasn’t well pleased. But Jesus loved that they were so brave and bold. It showed that they really believed that Jesus could heal

by Melita Day-Lewis

their friend and change his life. The paralysed man got more than he expected. Jesus didn’t only heal him but forgave him for all the things he’d done wrong. He was changed on the inside first – you could say, he was changed from the inside out. In Toy Story 2, the mini-rescuers also got more than they expected – by saving Woody, they rescued a bunch of other toys! When we trust Jesus and do our best to live the way he wants us to, we will be changed from the inside out. We might even get more than we expect. Our friends might see the change and start to trust Jesus too! Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. You can thank God for your day, share any concerns or pray for people who are being treated unfairly because of their faith in Jesus.

Mark 8:27–38

Jesus asked his disciples, ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter replied, ‘The Messiah!’ Jesus was impressed, but warned the disciples not to tell anyone. Jesus explained that he would suffer and die but that after two days he would rise again. Peter tried to talk Jesus out of the plan, but Jesus knew it was really the Devil tricking him and told him to stop. Then Jesus explained that following God’s plan would mean that he would face challenges, as would his followers. If you’re a KA! JAM member, check out your KAPAC 18 to read the full story or sign up below to start your KA! JAM journey

Triangle percussion instruments weren’t always shaped like a triangle! The earliest known triangles were a trapezoid-shape (a skewed quadrilateral) and didn’t have an open bottom corner. They also had small rings threaded around the bottom bar. In the 1700s the Turkish royal family’s bodyguards used to play music using drums, bells and triangles. This music was introduced to Europe in 1720 and composers, such as Mozart and Beethoven, began to use the triangle in their orchestras.

The theme for British Science Week is Innovating for the Future, so we thought you might like to colour this picture of two young scientists who are getting their heads together to come up with some bright ideas. As well as adding a bit of colour, why don’t you use some of the space to draw and colour some bright ideas of your own? Just grab some pencils, pens and paints to colour the picture or stick some stuff on to make a collage. Then email your colourings to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk – make sure you write ‘Bright Ideas Colouring’ in the subject box and give us your full name, age and address. Alternatively you can post your colourings to: Your Space, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. Children who live in a household where someone smokes are more likely to develop all kinds of illnesses including asthma and chest infections. Even if you can’t see the smoke around you, you could still be breathing it in. Smoke can even linger for two to three hours indoors! Smoking in a car with children is particularly dangerous, which is why it’s illegal to smoke in a car if someone under 18 is present.

Here’s what Finn had to say about his challenge. ‘I cooked 100 cookies for the homeless to eat. I helped out at the food bank, it was very busy but it was fun. I got to meet a lot of new people and it was good to help out.’ Great work, Finn!
