It’s time to find a cosy corner, curl up on a comfy chair or find a shady spot outdoors to settle down and enjoy a good read. Why? Because tomorrow (6 September) is Read a Book Day – a day set aside to celebrate books and the joy of reading. Whether you return to an old favourite or choose to get going on something new is up to you. Short or long, funny or serious, fictional or factual, the choice is yours – just get reading! Don’t worry if you’re not a confident reader – ask a parent or guardian, your grandma or grandpa, an uncle or auntie, or an older brother or sister to sit and enjoy a book with you. Did you know that reading is good for you? As little as 10 minutes of reading a day can make a big difference. As you read, you learn wonderful words, fun facts and stretch your imagination. Experts have discovered that reading for pleasure helps children to become better learners and improves their mental health. If you don’t have many books at home ask your teacher if you can borrow some books from school. Most libraries are open and even though you can’t browse and choose books in the usual way, lots of libraries are doing ‘lucky dip’ boxes for children – The re is a bo what a great way to discover something new! ok hidde n on e v e ry Go on – grab a book, get reading and have fun! page of this w

When I was a kid I wasn’t really into storybooks. My thing was reading books filled with facts – especially encyclopedias and atlases. I do enjoy stories, though, and one of the first storybooks I remember reading was The Story of Joseph, based on the well-known Bible story from Genesis. I remember reading it to my mum, then listening as she explained who Joseph was and what the story was about. The cool thing about the Bible is that it’s not just one book, but loads of books packed with loads of stories. There are adventure stories, love stories, stories about children… there’s even a story that includes a talking donkey (check out Numbers 22:21–39). And every story helps us to learn something about living God’s way. If you read nothing else on Read a Book Day, pick up a Bible and discover one of the amazing stories inside. Happy reading!

Trust in God’s Promises

C

hange is part of life, isn’t it? Some changes are small, such as trying out a new breakfast cereal. But some changes are big – and sometimes scary – such as moving to a new school, town or country! In this week’s Bible cartoon Abram had to change nearly EVERYTHING! He was happy living in his hometown with friends and family nearby. He wasn’t planning on moving or doing anything that would make him feel strange or uncomfortable. However, one day God invited Abram to go on an adventure and everything changed! Imagine how he felt leaving all that was familiar and safe. Not only that, he set off on the journey without any directions. There was no GPS and, even if there

says Melita Day-Lewis

had been, God hadn’t given Abram the address of his destination! Even though God was with him every step of the way and promised to bless him, I’m sure Abram felt afraid or lost sometimes. Everything must have seemed uncertain, even dangerous. You might not have to leave your home and country like Abram, but the coronavirus pandemic has brought big changes. Maybe you’re worried about the future or feel afraid. No matter what changes you face, one thing will never change – God is with you and has an amazing plan for your life! Even if the journey sometimes feels difficult, life with Jesus is an awesome adventure and full of things to be thankful for. We just need to keep on trusting him and believing his promises!

Living Like Jesus – Loving Your Neighbour Written by KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku – illustrated by Steve English

Did you know that the most important commandments in the Bible are to love God and to love your neighbour? Jesus was great at doing this, so let’s follow his example by loving God and our neighbours too.

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

When Jesus and his disciples were sharing their evening meal, Jesus stood up, wrapped a towel around his waist and poured water into a basin. He washed each of his disciples’ feet and then dried them with the towel. Peter was horrified and refused to be washed because Jesus was their leader. However, Jesus explained that Peter couldn’t be part of his family unless he allowed Jesus to do it. He then encouraged the disciples to follow his example of washing one another’s feet.

Living Like Jesus

Washing a visitor’s feet was normally a job for the servant. By taking on this role himself, Jesus showed the disciples what following God truly means – humbly serving (caring for) those around you.

Loving Your Neighbour

As Christians we should never feel that we’re too important to help others. Whatever we can do to follow Jesus’ example of loving and serving others – however big or small it may seem – we should do.

KA! JAM is the cooles t Bible activity club around. As a member you’ll go on amazing adventures through th e Bible learning about Jesus. Each activity sheet is filled with lots of great stuff about be ing a Christian. You’ll also receive our mini-mag, Chatte rbox, which is filled with jo kes, games and much mor e. In the second book the wizard reveals that his full name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs. When he grew up, he decided to shorten it to Oz, especially as the other initials spelled pinhead!

Thankfully, they’ve had lots of donations from individuals, churches, the Rotary Club and The Salvation Army area food hub. There are also plenty of volunteers, including Evie and her brother Jacob. Evie and Jacob have been helping to sort out the food twice a week during their school holidays. Here’s a photo of Evie with HM Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, Michael More-Molyneux, Major Catherine Rand and Wendy (Evie and Jacob’s grandmother).
