I love picnics! Which is just as well, because my family has enjoyed a lot of picnics during lockdown. Family picnics are great, but picnics are even better when you can get a bunch of people together. I’ve really missed the church picnics we would normally have enjoyed around this time of year. While I don’t really like sharing my food, I do think the best picnics are ones that involve sharing – not just food, but fun and conversations too. One of the most famous ‘picnics’ must be the feeding of the 5,000 (check out John 6:1–13). That picnic might never have happened if someone hadn’t shared. I wonder what the boy who handed over his packed lunch thought would happen. He could never have imagined that his five loaves and two fish would feed 5,000 people. Is there something you should share? You never know, it could make a big difference.

What a Turnaround! says Justin Reeves

uring lockdown, I’ve enjoyed watching Match of the Day Top 10. My favourite category has been Top 10 Premier League Matches, with top spot going to Manchester City versus QPR in 2012. Part of the reason this match came in at number one is because it involved such an epic turnaround. Having played 90 minutes of the last game of their season, City were losing 2-1. Two stoppage-time goals saw them win 3-2, pip arch-rivals Manchester United to top spot and clinch their first league title in 44 years! That was a pretty amazing turnaround, but this week’s Bible story beats that hands down! Saul was an absolute rotter and he would stop at nothing to rid the world of Jesus’ followers – he hated them!

There’s a saying that goes, ‘The leopard does not change his spots’. It means that some people will never change the way they behave. Well, Saul was a leopard with some pretty stubborn spots, but his story proves this saying wrong. If someone like Saul can turn his life around after meeting Jesus, anyone can. The good news for us is that no matter what mistakes we’ve made, Jesus never gives up on us. That doesn’t mean we can behave as badly as we like. However, it does mean that if we accept Jesus as our friend and choose to live life his way, he’ll forgive us and give us a fresh start. Are you ready to turn your life around? One bit of advice – don’t wait till stoppage time!

Selected verses from

Psalm 27

The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.

Difficult situations, such as family issues, problems at school or standing up for what you believe in can feel scary. Well, this psalm reminds us that God is always with us. His love and light outshine all fear and give us courage to face our challenges. Even when things might seem impossible, we still have hope and can be confident knowing that God will eventually make sure everything works out just right.

The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid? Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his Temple. For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent. I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. (New International Version)

Dear God,

When I am scared, help me to remember that you are with me and bless me with the courage to face any challenge.

Amen.

Here are some gobsmacking facts about practically everything, to boggle your brain or wow your mates…

Octopus Hank’s escape in Finding Dory is based on real-life octopod getaways! One example is Inky, an octopus that broke out from the National Aquarium of New Zealand. A wet trail showed that Inky most likely moved the lid of his tank, slid across the floor and down a drainage pipe into the sea. Octopuses are great escapologists because they’re intelligent, can survive a short while out of water and can squeeze through holes much smaller than their bodies.

Learning through fun at home Lots of you will be off school at the moment as some of them are shut or taking just a few year groups as lockdown is slowly lifted. While you’re stuck at home you might be struggling to keep entertained. So we thought you might appreciate some ideas to keep you busy during this challenging time. They’re all easy to do at home and link in with the subjects you might have been learning in school.

History

Children throughout history have played games just like you do. Kids during Victorian times (the period when Queen Victoria was the monarch of Great Britain) played all sorts of games, some of which children still play today, including snakes and ladders and tag. But there was one really simple game that we think not many of you will have played before – hoop and stick! It really is as simple as it sounds. The object of the game is to keep a big hoop rolling for as long as possible using just a stick. Why don’t you try it to see what it’s like?

Languages

The Euro 2020 football tournament was due to kick off yesterday (12 June), but it’s been delayed till next year because of the coronavirus pandemic. This year’s tournament was going to be hosted by 12 cities in 12 different countries. Three of these cities were London (England), Glasgow (Scotland) and Dublin (Republic of Ireland), but can you work out what the other countries were using the language greetings clues below? The answers are hidden at the bottom of the page!

Have you ever done any sewing? It’s lots of fun and you can create all sorts of cool things from decorations to clothes. Here’s a simple sewing project for you to try. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or more experienced, it’ll still be fun! All you need is a pack of different coloured felt, paper, pencil, pins, needle, embroidery thread, craft or fabric glue, ribbon, stuffing, scissors and a grown-up to help. What to do…

2

Draw a jellyfish template on a piece of paper. Ask a grown-up to pin the template to felt and cut out two jellyfish shapes.

4

Cut 6–8 strands (depending how big your jellyfish template is) of ribbon – these are the tentacles and can be as long as you like.

Pass your embroidery thread through the hole of your needle and secure the end of thread with a knot so it doesn’t come loose. Sew your ribbon on to the inside of one of your jellyfish shapes.

6

Place the second jellyfish shape on top of the one with ribbon attached and join them together by sewing around the edge. Leave a small gap to add your stuffing.

Draw some facial features, such as eyes and a mouth on to another piece of paper and ask a grown-up to cut these out too.

Fill your jellyfish with stuffing and sew the gap closed.

7

Finally glue the facial features on and voila – you now have a jellyfish friend!

Check out next week’s KA! World for more ideas to keep on learning!

Greenford Gives A Little Love

The Messy Church group at Greenford Salvation Army has been very busy during lockdown. The kids have been designing posters to send to nursing homes in Greenford. Greenford Salvation Army Band usually visits several homes in the area, but can’t at the moment, so this is a great way to keep in touch and spread some cheer. The children have also been making cards to send to older people who have been isolating and are missing going to the Army. Here are some of the children’s brilliant pictures – these three were made by Tia and Tyler.

Get In Touch

The ‘Kids Alive!’ office is temporarily closed, but we still want to hear from our readers. Please email your news, colourings, reader profiles and anything else you’d like to share with us to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. We’d especially like to know whether your church or Sunday school is doing something cool during this difficult time. So get in touch to let us know how you’re staying connected!
