hat’s a pirate’s favourite letter? Rrrr! Why do bananas have to put sunscreen on before going to the beach? Otherwise they might peel! What did the left eye say to the right eye? Between us, something smells! Where would we be without jokes to brighten our mood, eh? The Kids Alive! team loves jokes! That’s why we have them on our Giggle in the Middle pages (flick over to pages 8 and 9 now to read this week’s rib-ticklers). It’s also why we wanted to highlight International Joke Day, which takes place every year on 1 July. Having a laugh is actually really important for our well-being. Giggling helps reduce stress and tension, lifts our mood and may even ease pain and help improve our immune system! So on 1 July, take some time out of your day to share a joke with a friend or family member and see if you can get a grin or a chuckle from them! You could also try writing your own jokes. If you come up with a side-splitter, we’d love to hear it! Email us at kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to tell us! Or how about getting all your favourite jokes together to make your own stand-up show? Record yourself telling them and send it to someone you think could do with cheering up!
There’s a joke book hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!
I love a good laugh. I find all sorts of things funny – good jokes, silly noises, funny stories, people falling over… OK, I know I shouldn’t laugh at people falling over, but sometimes it’s just funny. I even laugh at myself sometimes – usually when I’ve done something daft like putting milk in the cupboard and trying to put cereal in the fridge. I often wonder if God likes a good laugh. I’d like to think so - after all he did create the blobfish, the blue-footed booby bird and the bone-eating snot flower worm. In Proverbs 17:22 we’re reminded laughter is good for us – it says, ‘A cheerful heart is good medicine…’ (NIV). OK, it doesn’t specifically mention laughing, but it’ll do for me. So, enjoy International Joke Day and having a good giggle. I’m sure God won’t mind (he might even laugh with you) and remember, laughter is good for you!

Read the comment below about MAKING MISTAKES AND HOW GOD CAN HELP US TO PUT THINGS RIGHT
Be Careful To Be Clever
S
ometimes clever people do stupid things. For example, there was the pilot who was so busy daydreaming he almost flew his plane into a terrible thunderstorm. Only a radio message from someone in the control tower made him realise what was about to happen. King Solomon did a fantastic job of building God’s Temple, but then he went and messed everything up. How? By not sticking with God. Instead, he decided to follow other gods that were nothing more than statues carved by people. How could he be so stupid? Mistake No. 1: In Solomon’s day kings often had lots of wives, and he married some women who followed other gods. Mistake No. 2: Just like he used to worship the
one true God – the God of Israel – Solomon started to worship these other gods. Mistake No. 3: Solomon had built a beautiful temple for the God of Israel, and now he built special places for the other gods too. After that, things went from bad to worse. Some people rose up against Solomon, and God told him that most of his kingdom would be taken away from his family. After Solomon died his son took over as king and the trouble continued. Alive kids, if we’re not careful, one mistake can lead to another … and another … and we can find ourselves in a right mess, as Solomon did. But God has promised to be with us and, when we go wrong, he can help us put things right again. Then we’ll be clever people, who do clever things!

Solomon Moves Out Solomon built God a temple, but then he made some bad mistakes. Husband, I want a place to worship my god too!
So King Solomon set up places where his wives could worship their own gods.
So do I! AND ME!
And then he worshipped them himself!
Why have you done this, Solomon? Because of this your kingdom will be lost.
Solomon ended up with many enemies, and nearly all of his kingdom was lost. Now everything is a mess. Why didn’t I just follow God like I promised?

Psalm 1 The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you. Being around others is often great fun, but sometimes there can be challenges. For example, some people may say or do something that is unkind and how we react to them as Christians is very important. Being a follower of Jesus is about loving God and others. If we hear our friends being mean we shouldn’t join in, instead we should remind them that it’s not OK. When we stand up for what is right others will be encouraged to do so too.
Great blessings belong to those who don’t listen to evil advice, who don’t live like sinners, and who don’t join those who make fun of God. Instead, they love the Lord’s teachings and think about them day and night. So they grow strong, like a tree planted by a stream — a tree that produces fruit when it should and has leaves that never fall. Everything they do is successful. But the wicked are not like that. They are like chaff that the wind blows away. When the time for judgment comes, the wicked will be found guilty. Sinners have no place among those who do what is right. The Lord shows his people how to live, but the wicked have lost their way. Easy-to-Read Version
Dear God,
Help me to follow your way of living, by loving you and loving others too.
Amen.

Here are some gobsmacking facts about practically everything, to boggle your brain or wow your mates…
Mickey Mouse was drawn with gloves on his hands because it helped to keep the animation simple. When cartoons were first created, they were drawn by hand rather than computer. Fingers were much harder to draw than gloves, so gloves saved time! There’s another reason too. Walt Disney, who created the Mickey Mouse character, chose gloves because he wanted Mickey Mouse to seem more human than mouse-like. Lots of famous cartoon characters wear gloves – next time you’re watching cartoons, keep an eye out for them.

ave you been able to get out and H enjoy some fresh air this week? One fun way to enjoy time outdoors is by filling the sky with bubbles! You can try to blow the biggest one possible or fill the air with lots of them and rush around popping them. You might not be able to beat the record for the largest free-floating soap bubble (that record belongs to Gary Pearlman and his 96.27 cubic metre whopper!), but with the Gazillion Bubble Storm you can create bigger, better bubbles in seconds! Simply slide the bottle into its holder until it clicks. Then flip the bottle upside down and watch the bubble magic. Each Bubble Storm includes a tray and an 8oz bottle of premium Gazillion Solution. For your opportunity to win a Gazillion Bubble Storm, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk – remember to put ‘Bubble Storm Competition’ in the subject box. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Bubble Storm Competition, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. The Kids Alive! team is not working in the office at the moment, so some things are taking a little longer than usual, but we will sort out your entries as soon as we can.

This week we would normally be looking forward to the start of Wimbledon fortnight. Sadly, like many other sports events, The Championships have been cancelled this year. That doesn’t mean you have to totally miss out on the fun of tennis – here’s a tennis player for you to colour (check out page 13 for another tennis-themed activity). Just grab some pencils, pens and paints to colour the picture or stick some stuff on to make a collage. Then email your colourings to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk – make sure you write ‘Tennis Player Colouring’ in the subject box and give us your full name, age and address. Alternatively you can post your colourings to: Your Space, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN. If you’re sending by post remember to fill in your details on the left so we know who you are.

Learning through fun at home Lots of you will be off school at the moment as some of them are shut or taking just a few year groups as lockdown is slowly lifted. While you’re stuck at home you might be struggling to keep entertained. So we thought you might appreciate some ideas to keep you busy during this challenging time. They’re all easy to do at home and link in with the subjects you might have been learning in school.
Music
Have you ever heard an orchestra play? You might think you haven’t, but if you watch films, there might have been an orchestra playing on the soundtrack. There are loads of orchestra videos you can watch online. Have a look on YouTube to see and hear the different instruments. In a traditional symphony orchestra, the instruments are grouped into four areas – strings, woodwind, brass and percussion. There are four pictures of instruments below. Work out which one belongs in which section. The answers are hidden at the bottom of the page.

The Championships Wimbledon were supposed to start on Monday (29 June). Unfortunately they’ve had to be cancelled this year. However, government regulations allow for people to go out and play sport, such as tennis. Is there a court near you that you could go to and pretend to be the next Andy Murray? If not, don’t worry, how about a game of balloon tennis? All you need is a balloon, something to use as a net and another person to play with! You could even make some rackets using paper plates – just use sticky tape to attach a wooden spoon to the back!
Computing
All computer data is represented using a number system. This number system is called binary code and the only digits used are 0 and 1. All letters, numbers and symbols need to be converted into binary for a computer to process them. Interestingly, binary code is read right to left and each digit is like an on/off switch. So 0 represents off and 1 represents on. It’s all quite complicated, but there’s an alphabet code below that shows how to write capital letters. Have a go at using it to write your name in binary code in the space provided.
