There’s a watering can hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!

Last year my family and I tried growing our own tomatoes, strawberries and carrots. We grew loads of tomatoes and strawberries and they were delicious – much better than what’s available to buy in the supermarket. However, the carrots didn’t grow, because we had planted them in a shady part of our garden in rubbish soil! This made me think about the parable of the sower in the Bible (Matthew 13:1–23). This is a story Jesus tells about a farmer planting seeds in different types of soil. Only the seeds that landed in good, fertile soil grew into strong plants with a good crop. In our lives we need to make sure we are living in Jesus’ light and have nourishment from good soil – that’s our surroundings and the people we spend time with. Then we can grow into strong Christians who can share the good news with many more people! Are you ready to grow?

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT JESUS FORGIVING PETER

God Uses Us Even When We Mess Up

I

hate making mistakes! I’m not sure why, because my family and friends don’t expect me to be perfect. Maybe it’s just part of my personality. However, just because I hate making mistakes, doesn’t mean I never do! I’ve made some funny mistakes and some not-so-funny ones. It’s the not-so-funny mistakes that can really bug us, especially when we’ve hurt or ‘ disappointed someone we love. Peter, one of Jesus’ followers, had made a horrible mistake. He’d let Jesus down when he most needed support. Jesus was falsely accused in a Roman court and Peter told those listening nearby that he didn’t know who Jesus was – three times! He was gutted about it afterwards and ran away and cried his heart

by Melita Day-Lewis

out. Even though Jesus was raised to life again, Peter felt really sad about what he’d done and didn’t know how to make things better. In the Bible cartoon we see that Jesus didn’t hold a grudge about Peter’s mistake and it didn’t end their friendship. Instead, he forgave Peter, showed him that he loved him just the same and gave Peter a really important job to do – taking care of God’s people. That’s super encouraging for you and me! God forgives us when we blow it, he never stops loving us and he wants us to keep on following him and helping others. It also means that we should always do our best to forgive people who let us down or disappoint us. After all, no one is perfect – except God! ’

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. You can thank God for your day, share any concerns or pray for courage to share the good news of Jesus with others.

Acts 3:1-20 and 4:1-35

As Peter and John passed the Temple gates, a man who couldn’t walk begged them for money. Peter said, ‘I have no money but this is what I have – in the name of Jesus, stand up!’ The man was healed and ran into the Temple praising God! People saw this and were amazed so Peter told them all about Jesus. However, the religious leaders were angry and arrested them. But Peter and John weren’t afraid and prayed that God would continue to help them boldly share his message.

Cannons fired during a play burnt down London’s Globe Theatre in 1613! During Shakespeare’s Henry VIII, small cannons used in the performance were fired. The actors didn’t use cannonballs but a piece of burning wadding (a disc of paper or hay that held down gunpowder) set fire to the thatched roof. The theatre burnt down in about an hour. A new theatre was built on the old stone foundations but this time it was given a tiled roof!

WIN!

‘The Incredible Record Smashers’ by Jenny Pearson (illustrated by Erica Salcedo) is out now in paperback from Usborne.

here’s nothing better than getting stuck into a brand new book and we’ve got a couple of smashing books to give away this week. The Incredible Record Smashers is the second hilarious and heart-warming adventure from Jenny Pearson. Lucy is a fixer of broken things, but there’s one thing she can’t fix and that’s her unhappy mum. Until she comes up with an incredible plan. Along with her best friend, Sandesh, Lucy is going to smash a world record! She’s convinced starry Paul Castellini – Record Smashers TV host and all-time crooner – is the answer to her problems. However, breaking a world record when watermelons, kumquats, two lovable baddies and a 30cm shatter-resistant school ruler are involved isn’t quite as easy as Lucy thought. Can she learn that sometimes happiness doesn’t come with a plan? For your opportunity to win a signed copy of The Incredible Record Smashers, plus a signed copy of Jenny’s first book, The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 21 May when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Smashing Books Competition’ in the subject box. Queen’s Consort

The Life of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh If you’ve watched a news programme in the last couple of weeks you’ve probably seen lots of people talking about the fact that Philip, the Queen’s husband, passed away. But how much do you know about Prince Philip?

Despite being the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip wasn’t a king. His role was consort, which means he supported the Queen through good times and bad. He was 99 years old when he died and had been married to the Queen for nearly 74 years!

Early Life

Philip was born on the Greek island of Corfu. His parents were Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. He was a prince of Greece and Denmark, but just a year after he was born, his family was banished from Greece and a British warship took them to safety in Italy – with baby Philip dozing in a crib made from an orange crate! Philip had quite a difficult childhood as his mother was poorly and ended up in hospital, so he was mostly raised in the UK and attended a Scottish boarding school called Gordonstoun.

Mr and Mrs

When Philip left school he entered the Royal Naval College and graduated top of his class. When King George VI visited the college, Philip was asked to entertain his two daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret! He obviously made an impression on the future Queen, because they kept in touch while he served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. They were married on 20 November 1947 and went on to have four children – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward – eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren! Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip had just a few years of marriage before her father died, she became Queen Elizabeth II and their lives changed forever. Over the years, they attended many events, visited lots of different countries and the Queen talked about how much help and support her husband gave her.

Prince Philip had lots of interests, including sailing and flying, but he was really passionate about his charity work. He was patron to hundreds of organisations – that means he supported them and encouraged awareness of their causes.

Charity Work

One issue he cared a lot about was wildlife conservation. He was the first UK president of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and international president for 15 years!

He will also be remembered for starting the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. The programme inspires young people to challenge themselves and build confidence through activities outside the classroom. Millions of young people across the world have taken part since it started – you can find out more at dofe.org. It’s for young people aged between 14 and 25, but keep it in mind for your future!

Prince Philip is missed and remembered by many people, but lives on in the memories of those who knew and loved him, and through the work of the many organisations he worked with.

Food Insecurity When a person doesn’t have access to enough food, they are classified as ‘food insecure’. That means they don’t have reliable access to enough safe and nutritious food. For decades the world has made huge progress in reducing the total number of people who experience food insecurity, but in recent years things have got worse. Food insecurity is now a growing problem again.

For farmers in Zimbabwe a good crop means they can feed their families. However, climate change means the weather has become less predictable. This means that some methods of growing crops, that small-scale farmers have been using for generations, no longer work.

The Salvation Army (who publish Kids Alive!) is providing training in simple and sustainable farming techniques to help farmers make the best use of their land and overcome food insecurity.

Meet Anerudo

Illustrations by John MacGregor

Anerudo is a young man who manages his family farm to support his mother and younger siblings. Anerudo has been responsible for the farm for a few years now, but despite his attempts, the farm was struggling.

When a neighbour mentioned what she had learnt during the Salvation Army training and how well her farm had been doing since, Anerudo wanted to join too.

Anerudo took over the farm from his mum as she was getting older and he started to question whether he was farming in the best way. Learning the new techniques during the training gave him the confidence to make necessary changes to his farm. After the first season, he produced more maize and was able to sell the surplus at the market. This meant he could afford to buy chickens and goats to breed and sell for further income. Anerudo has a passion for helping others and has since taught the new techniques to his friends and neighbouring farmers to help them and their farms thrive too.

You Can Help Too You can help farmers such as Anerudo by raising money to fund training programmes by taking on Challenge 750 for the Feeding Hope campaign! The money raised will help support The Salvation Army’s food security projects – feeding hope to farmers from generation to generation. Here’s how you can get involved.

Choose Your Challenge 750 minute dance-athon or bake-athon

Get sponsored to dance the night away in a living room disco or have a non-stop baking day! You could take part with others and share the experience over Zoom or ask your parents or guardians to live stream your challenge on social media.

750 hours without Could you give up your favourite treat for just over a month? Invite friends and family to sponsor you to live without chocolate or TV for 750 hours.

750 times 750 miles in a month Team up with your church, kids club or class to run, walk or skip 750 miles in a month. Each person can take as many miles as they can manage and add their miles to the team total.

Could you do 750 star jumps in a certain timeframe? Or plant 750 seeds in your garden? Create your own ‘750’ challenge and raise money to support The Salvation Army’s work tackling food insecurity around the world.

How Will The Money Be Used? Here are some examples of how the money you raise might be used.

£35

could provide seeds and small tools for trainees

£320

could create a demonstration plot for training

£145

could provide training for five small-scale farmers

£750

could provide tools to a group of 50 farmers

Join the Team Ask your parents or guardians to set up a Just Giving page for your challenge to keep track of your donations. You can also link it to The Salvation Army’s Feeding Hope campaign page by visiting justgiving.com/campaign/FeedingHopeHelpingHand2021.

Palm Sunday Celebration During Maidstone Salvation Army’s Zoom Celebration on Palm Sunday they had very special guests, General Brian and Commissioner Rosalie Peddle (international leaders of The Salvation Army), and it was packed full of special moments. Commissioner Rosalie Three new junior sold iers reminded everyone why we celebrate Palm Sunday and that people were attracted to Jesus because of his goodness and kindness. The meeting was also the Children’s Celebration for Maidstone’s fantastic group of young people. Every child had a gift of a book or CD delivered to their home, which were unwrapped as everyone sang ‘Come On And Celebrate’. There was a special celebration for Alexi, Gemma and Bethan who were welcomed as new junior soldiers by General Brian Peddle and the children’s families were watching to see their special moment. The cell group also presented the Bible reading, Scarlett, Camille and Hannah prayed powerfully, and James introduced the benediction song. It was a ading fantastic Cell group Bible re celebration of how well the young people and children’s leaders have coped and adapted to the last year’s challenges. A whole year of successful online Zoom Sunday schools, YouTube Children’s Praise videos, Zoom cell group Bible studies and youth socials!
