There’s nothing better on a summer’s day than a delicious barbecue and this week is the perfect time to get grilling, because 25–31 May is National BBQ Week! This year, National BBQ Week has launched Barbi for Britain, which encourages everyone to hold a barbecue on bank holiday Monday (25 May) and say a great, big thank you to key workers, such as NHS staff, but also those that help feed us, including supermarket staff and delivery drivers. In an ideal world your barbecue would include all your friends and family, but unfortunately that’s not possible this year because of the need to socially distance. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a ketchup (catch up, get it?). Why not hold a virtual barbecue? Arrange to have your barbecue at the same time as your family or friends and video call them or send each other photos of what you’re up to. Or ask your parents or guardians about arranging a street barbecue where everyone tucks into their grilled grub outside the front of their houses. People with gardens don’t have to hog all the fun either. If you live in a flat, cook your barbecue-style food using an oven and have a pretend barbecue. However you celebrate, have a grill-iant time!
I’m looking forward to National BBQ Week – not that I need an excuse to enjoy a barbecue! What would be your choice of barbecue food: a hot dog, a burger, both? How about some fish? There aren’t really any stories about barbecues in the Bible. But there is a story about Jesus cooking fish for his disciples for breakfast (check out John 21). Smoked fish for breakfast might sound disgusting to you (it wouldn’t be my first choice either), but there’s something about this story that makes me feel good. I love how Jesus knew where his friends were, prepared a much-needed meal for them and hung out with them while they got a few things sorted. Sometimes you might feel like Jesus isn’t around and doesn’t care, but he does and he’s waiting to hang out with you and help you get things sorted. You just need to go to him.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS US TO LIVE LIFE JESUS’ WAY
Whaaat?!
wonders Cara Mott
H
ave you ever heard something that’s made you say, ‘Whaaat?!’? This happens to me quite a lot – maybe I’m easily confused! The idea of the Holy Spirit has always been something that I couldn’t quite get my head around. I was constantly asking, ‘But what is it?’ The idea that there was a spirit inside me felt very strange! However, as I got older I began looking at the Holy Spirit differently. To try to understand him better, I decided to think about the things he actually does. The Holy Spirit prays with us, listens to our questions, helps us learn about God and reminds us how to live in the best way we can. So the Holy Spirit is a helper,
guide, teacher and friend. That’s simple, right? But how does God’s Spirit do all that? Well, I like to think of the Holy Spirit as a bit like the wind – it’s a force that you can’t see but you know is there because you can see the effect it has. The Holy Spirit helps me know God, and he can do the same for you! It doesn’t matter that I don’t understand everything about how the Holy Spirit works. There are plenty of other things I don’t understand either, such as car engines, how the internet works and why we can’t tickle ourselves! So, I don’t need to know exactly how the Holy Spirit works, I just need to know that God’s given him to me to help me live a good life.

Selected verses from
Psalm 24
The Earth and everything on it belong to the Lord. The world and all its people belong to him. He built the Earth on the water. He built it over the rivers. Who can go up on the Lord’s mountain? Who can stand in his holy Temple? Only those who have not done evil, who have pure hearts, who have not used my name to hide their lies, and who have not made false promises. Good people ask the Lord to bless others. They ask God, their Saviour, to do good things. They try to follow God. They go to the God of Jacob for help. Gates, proudly lift your heads! Open, ancient doors, and the glorious King will come in. Who is the glorious King? The Lord All-Powerful is the glorious King.
The Bible book of Psalms is a collection of songs that help us to tell God how we’re feeling – whether we’re happy, excited, worried or sad. There are psalms praising and thanking God, asking for his help and reminding us that, no matter what, we can always trust him. So however you’re feeling, dig in! There’s sure to be a psalm that’s just right for you.
This majestic psalm shows God as king of the whole world, who’s full of glory and power yet wants to spend time with his people. However, the psalm says that only those who have clean hearts can get close to him. This is because God is holy – he only does what is right and good. In trying our very best to be like Jesus each day, by being truthful and caring, our hearts will become purer and we’ll get closer to God.
(Easy-to-Read Version)
Dear God,
Help me to be honest even when it feels difficult and to focus on what is good and right so that I can stay close to you always.
Amen.

Here are some gobsmacking facts about practically everything, to boggle your brain or wow your mates…
Turkeys can blush! When a turkey is scared, excited, annoyed or ill the pale pink or blue-grey skin on its head and neck turns bright red, blue or white. The flap of skin over their beaks (called a snood) also blushes.

Music
Music is great fun, makes us feel good and helps us to develop skills such as confidence. You can channel your inner performer by holding a concert for your family. You’ll have to plan what songs you’ll sing or what pieces of music you’d like to play, think about what outfit you’ll wear for your concert and set up a stage area to perform in. Remember to make tickets and programmes for your audience! If it’s OK with your parents or guardians, get them to record you performing and send it to some family and friends.

Have you ever tried to write some poetry? There are lots of different types of poem, such as limerick, acrostic and haiku. Many different types of poem have rules for how they’re constructed. For example, acrostic poems use the first letters of each line to spell out a word. Why don’t you have a go at writing an acrostic poem using your name? Or maybe spell out Kids Alive! instead.

History
Have you learnt about the Vikings? They were a really interesting group of people that came from Scandinavia and invaded Britain. They were fantastic at building boats and travelled across the North Sea in longships. They also carried long swords, round wooden shields and wore helmets to protect their heads. Here’s how you can make a Viking helmet for yourself. You’ll need a measuring tape, several pieces of white card, paper, ruler, pencil, scissors, masking tape, paints or felt-tip pens, silver foil and a grown-up to help.
1 5
2
Ask a grown-up to use the measuring tape to measure the size of your head.
3
4
Bend the strip of card around to make a circle. Check it fits your head, then stick the ends together.
5cm
Now cut four strips of card that are 30cm long and 4cm wide. Bend one strip of card across the headband to create an arch shape. Secure it with tape on both sides. Do the same with another strip to form a cross shape over the top of your helmet.
6
Add two more strips of card to form a star, dome shape. Make sure all the pieces are secured with tape at both ends.
7
Measure a strip of card so that it’s 1cm longer than the size of your head and 5cm wide. (If your card isn’t long enough, stick two pieces together.) Then cut it out.
Now you need to fill in the helmet gaps. Grab some paper and cut some pieces that will roughly fill the triangular gaps. Tape them on to the helmet from the inside.
Viking helmets often included a nose guard, so measure a piece of card about 3cm wide and long enough to cover your nose. You can give it a square or pointy end and attach it to the front of your helmet.
8
Decorate your helmet by painting it in shades of grey. You could also make small balls out of foil to look like rivets. (You might be wondering where the horns are, but despite many illustrations of Vikings in horned helmets, experts say there isn’t any evidence that Vikings ever wore them.)
Check out next week’s KA! World for more ideas to keep on learning!

Fundraising for Families
The Salvation Army in Watford has packed 150 ‘basics boxes’ to support more than 600 parents and children during social distancing! The people at Watford Salvation Army were already supporting local families struggling to feed children during school holidays by providing them with recipe boxes that contained everything they needed to make healthy meals. This meant the team was in a position to identify and help more families who were struggling. Tabitha, the five-year-old daughter of the leaders at Watford Salvation Army, also wanted to help. So she set out to raise £500 by hopscotching 26 times for the 2.6 Challenge. She’s already smashed that target, but you can help her raise even more by asking your parents or guardians to donate some money at justgiving.com/fundraising/tabithas-covid19-26challenge. If you would like to, you can also make a donation to Watford Salvation Army by visiting justgiving.com/watford-salvation-army.
