ootball fans have been waiting a long time, but finally the Euro 2020 tournament can begin! The elite international competition was due to take place last summer, but it was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Over the next few days there will be a triple-header of home nations games to enjoy. Wales hope to get off to a winning start against Switzerland at 2pm on Saturday (12 June), England take on Croatia at 2pm on Sunday (13 June) and Scotland will battle Czech Republic at 2pm on Monday (14 June). Then, they’ll each play two more games, hoping to win a place in the last 16. On their way to the next stage England and Scotland even have to face each other on Friday 18 June as they’ve both been drawn in Group D! But it’s not just home nation teams you can watch. Be sure to check out defending champions, France, as they have a tough group that includes Germany, Portugal and Hungary! In total, 24 teams will compete in 11 different cities before the final happens at Wembley Stadium, London on 11 July.
There’s a football hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!
Have you ever felt like you’re living in the past? This year, lots of people are celebrating last year’s birthdays and other occasions, because they couldn’t celebrate in 2020. Some families are celebrating last Christmas in the middle of this summer! And Euro 2020 is taking place in 2021! Some people think Christians live in the past – that going to church is old-fashioned and boring. I’ve been a Christian for 32 years and following Jesus has been anything but dull. With Jesus helping me, I live out my faith in the here and now. I’ve visited places and done things I’m sure I’d never have done if I wasn’t a Christian; I’ve met amazing people who have helped me through life; and I think I’ve helped others too. I hope you’ve chosen to live your life for Jesus. If not don’t wait till next year or even tomorrow. Do it now!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW IMPORTANT FRIENDS ARE
That’s What Friends Are For
I
f you read last week’s Bible cartoon you’ll know that a man named Saul hated Christians, but changed his whole life around by becoming a Christian himself. After that, he began using the name Paul and visited different places to tell people about Jesus. However, Paul didn’t always travel alone – he had friends who also followed Jesus and often went with him. In this week’s Bible cartoon, Paul and Silas are friends who go on mission trips together where they tell others about Jesus. This particular trip wasn’t an easy one because there were some pretty hard times – the friends were even thrown in jail! Thankfully they had each other to lean on and

help them get through those tough times. We all need to spend time with friends who are with us in good times and bad times. In fact, that’s exactly what friends are for – to share in our happy times and help us through the tougher moments of our lives. I know when I’ve faced some seriously tricky situations, God has always placed people around me to love and support me. Without them, things would have been even tougher. This week, have a think about your friends. Do any of them need some extra support or help? Maybe you’re the person God has placed near them to help them through a tricky situation.

Praying with Jesus
with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku
NOW YOU PRAY
Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.
Use the space to write a prayer. Pray that people will have a personal experience with Jesus and that their lives will positively change as they begin to follow Jesus’ way for living.
Acts 9:1-25
Saul was on a mission to arrest Christians living in Damascus, when suddenly a bright light appeared. Jesus’ voice spoke to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ Saul was confused, so Jesus explained to Saul who he was. The light had blinded Saul, so the Lord sent Ananias to pray for him so he could see again and receive the Holy Spirit. Saul was baptised and immediately began to preach about Jesus. Shocked at the sudden change in Saul, the Jews planned to kill him, but Saul’s followers helped him to escape.

Human hair is so strong that experts think the combined hair of one head could support the weight of two elephants! That’s about 12 tonnes! On average, a single strand of hair can support about 85 grams – the equivalent weight of approximately 24 pennies. A single hair is strong enough to hold more weight than a piece of copper wire of the same length and width. That’s because a strand of hair can stretch to one and a half times its original length before breaking.

Refugees Every year, millions of people are forced to flee their homes in order to keep safe from war, persecution or natural disaster. Those who have to leave their country are called refugees and some of them are children. Refugees often have to take long journeys by car, lorry, boat or on foot to get to safety. Many of these journeys are very dangerous and lots of people end up in refugee camps, where conditions can be cramped and overcrowded. Sometimes the number of refugees increases massively, because of big conflicts such as the Syrian Civil War in recent years.
Asylum Seekers Asylum seekers also leave their country to try to find safety and protection, but they’re not legally recognised as refugees. So they need to apply for asylum in a safe country and are known as asylum seekers while they wait for a decision on whether they can stay.
Undocumented Migrants A migrant is someone who decides to leave their home country to settle in another country. They have to go through an application process in their chosen country and are usually moving to find different job or education opportunities. Undocumented migrants are people who don’t go through the official application process and enter a different country without the legal documents that give them permission to live there.

Home from Home Many charities are involved with helping refugees, including The Salvation Army (who publish Kids Alive!). In 2015, in response to the Syrian conflict, the UK Prime Minister announced that 20,000 people could come to the UK as part of something called the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme. In response loads of communities wanted to get involved with welcoming and supporting the refugees. So the Community Sponsorship of Refugees scheme was set up and many Salvation Army churches and centres have been working with refugees as part of this scheme. Some Salvation Army churches have sponsored families themselves, while others have teamed up with other local organisations. These community sponsorship groups have been a huge help to refugees from the moment they arrive at the airport, as they support the families and help them build a new life in their new community.
The Alnabulsi Family One example of a family that The Salvation Army has helped is the Alnabulsi family – Ghassan, Manal and their three children. They were forced to leave their home in Syria and came to the UK under the Community Sponsorship scheme. Their Community Sponsorship group was from Raynes Park Community Church in London. The team of volunteers helped the Alnabulsi family with housing, English language tuition, education, benefits, work, health and well-being.
Find out More You can find out more about Refugee Week at refugeeweek.org.uk.
For more information about The Salvation Army’s Home from Home Community Resettlement programme, check out salvationarmy.org.uk/supporting-refugees. Perhaps you’d like your church to help sponsor a refugee family. Speak to your parents, guardians, Sunday school leaders or church leaders to see if it’s something you can get involved with.
