his year has been pretty tough, so it’s not surprising that many people’s mental health has been affected. Taking care of our mental well-being is so important and this is highlighted every year on 10 October for World Mental Health Day. Our mental well-being includes things such as how we feel and how we’re coping with things happening in our lives. There are lots of ways you can look after yourself and take care of your mental well-being. Spend plenty of time outdoors in nature – it can really help if you’re feeling stressed. Also, drink plenty of water and eat lots of yummy healthy food, so that you feel physically well too. If you’re finding the news about Covid-19 makes you feel anxious, turn off the TV and take some time out to read a book, play a board game or do something creative. Writing, drawing, painting, playing a musical instrument and baking are good distractions from worries because they give you something fun to focus on. It’s also really important to connect with others. Even if you can’t see your favourite people face to face, try to keep in touch by writing letters, emailing or video calling. Last, but definitely not least, remember that you’re not alone. If you don’t let anyone know how you’re feeling they can’t help, so always share any worries you have with your parents, guardians or another grown-up you trust.
I realised recently that I was feeling down. I haven’t been able to see family, friends and workmates who I enjoy spending time with, the weather’s become gloomier, and the mornings and evenings have got darker. What did I do? I told some friends how I was feeling and we chatted about things I could do to start feeling better. It really helped! I’ve found different ways to spend time with the people I miss, I’ve been doing more things that I enjoy and I’ve been going out to exercise when it’s light. I also spoke to Jesus about how I was feeling. Now, I’m not entirely sure how this praying thing works, but I do know that Jesus really cares about me and I always feel better after talking to him. If you’re feeling down make sure you speak to someone about it. It will help you to start feeling better.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW AND THINK ABOUT WAYS TO MAKE THE WORLD A FAIR PLACE FOR EVERYONE
Let’s Make the World Fair
O
ne day, while watching footy on TV, one of my daughters said, ‘Football’s not for girls, Daddy! Football’s just for boys!’ So we had a chat about how there are lots of girls and women who play football. I don’t like the idea that my daughters think there are things they can’t do, simply because they’re girls. In fact, I don’t like the idea that anyone thinks there are things they can’t do based on their gender. The sad truth for millions of girls around the world is that there are lots of things they’re not allowed to do, simply because they’re female. And it’s not just playing football or joining in a Sunday school quiz, like in the cartoon on page 5. For example, 130 million girls don’t get to go to school. A quarter of

all girls are made to get married when they’re still children. Thousands of girls are sold to be slaves and they’re treated very badly. That’s why International Day of the Girl (11 October) is so important, because it encourages people to think about, speak out against and challenge situations where girls are treated unfairly. To find out more about International Day of the Girl and how you can help to make a difference visit dayofthegirl.globalgoals.org. For now, check out the cartoon opposite, look up Galatians 3:28 to see what the Bible says about equality and think about what you can do to make our world a fair place for everyone.
Women of the Bible
Below is a list of women from the Bible. Write their names into the correct places in the grid to spell out a new word that means fairness in the yellow column. We’ve written in a few letters to help you to get started.

Living Like Jesus – Loving Your Neighbour Written by KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku – illustrated by Steve English
Did you know that the most important commandments in the Bible are to love God and to love your neighbour? Jesus was great at doing this, so let’s follow his example by loving God and our neighbours too.
Women Accompany Jesus
Jesus went from one town to another sharing the good news of God’s Kingdom. Travelling with him and the 12 disciples were some women. Jesus had healed some of those women from sickness and evil spirits, including Mary Magdalene from whom Jesus had cast out seven demons. Two of the other women were Joanna and Susanna but there were also many more. All of these women supported Jesus and the disciples with their own money.
Living Like Jesus
In Jesus’ time, women weren’t treated equally. But through his actions, Jesus showed that he respected women, valued their friendships and that in God’s eyes, everyone is equal. In return the women expressed their thanks by working hard behind the scenes to support Jesus’ ministry.
Loving Your Neighbour
Do you know someone who’s often treated differently? Maybe they get picked on or left out of things. Why not make an effort to spend time with them or include them in your friendship group?
KA! JAM is the cooles t Bible activity club around. As a member you’ll go on amazing adventures through th e Bible learning about Jesus. Tears can’t fall in space! Some astronauts say they’ve cried in space when they’re feeling lonely or sad and their eyes do water when something irritating gets into them. But the weightless atmosphere of space means that their tears just form a ball of water, like a big bubble around their eyes. Any liquids that are poured or spilt in space will also make the shape of a ball or sphere.

Empire Windrush
After the Second World War, the British government encouraged people from Commonwealth countries, including Jamaica and Trinidad to Britain. and Tobago, to come d the This was to help rebuil red ffe su d ha country, which s ing ild lots of damage to bu and affected many people.
Seventy-four years ago a ship called the Empire Windrush brought about 1,000 people from the Caribbean, many from Jamaica. Some of the men on board had fought for Britain in the Second World War and some were excited about the opportunities living in the UK would bring. All kinds of professions were represented including mechanics, carpenters, boxers, musicians and engineers.
s This ship’s journey wa ve wa the beginning of a of immigration from tries Commonwealth coun ck bla to the UK. The people who moved to the UK from Caribbean 971 countries from 1948–1 have become known as the Windrush generation after that famous ship.
Challenges and Contributions me they When the Windrush generation arrived, they didn’t get the welco ination expected. Many of the men, women and children experienced discrim refused to and racism. There were problems finding jobs – some companies was poor. le availab g housin of t employ black people – and the small amoun ed includ which Being called racist names was an everyday occurrence, people children being bullied because of the colour of their skin. Windrush Scandal In 2017 some of the victims’ stories were picked up by the press. This led to the government apologising and saying that nobody would be forced to leave. They also set up a compensation scheme and established Windrush Day – a celebration of the contributions of the Windrush generation – to be held on 22 June every year. However, this came too late for some, as a number of the victims died before the government acknowledged their mistake. Also, of the more than 1,275 people who have applied for compensation, only around 60 people have received any.
When the men, women and children of the Windrush generation came to the UK, they were told they could live here permanently, but the government didn’t keep good records of all the arrivals. In 2013 many of them were told, wrongly, that they were living in the UK illegally. This meant they couldn’t work or access healthcare and some were evicted from their homes, taken to detention centres or sent away from their families and friends to countries they had not lived in for many years.
Find Out More Each week we’ll list some great books, TV programmes, museums or websites below. Remember, learning about black history isn’t just important for people who are black. Black history is everyone’s history, so we all need to learn together.
