So, long story, but at the time of writing, we didn’t know which teams would play in the Super League Grand Final. You see, to get Kids Alive! to you in time, the comic gets printed a week before you receive it – so we printed this before the last of the semi-finals had been played. That’s just the way life goes, though, isn’t it? We never know exactly what the future holds. From deciding whether to wear a coat in the morning to choosing which subjects to focus on at school, we do our best to plan for whatever lies ahead, but things can always change. One thing that never changes is Jesus’ love for you. Whatever life sends your way – good or bad – Jesus is always there to help you. He wants you to make the best choices as you do your best to live the way he showed us in the Bible.

ater is amazing! It can do so many different things and we use it in so many ways. We can use water to go swimming, clean our dirty clothes, help flowers to grow in the garden and refresh us when we’re thirsty from a busy day. In the United Kingdom, we’re very fortunate to have such easy access to clean water, either from the tap or bottles. Unfortunately, some people in the world can’t simply go to the kitchen sink for water. Often, the challenge of collecting water falls to women and girls. This means they might miss out on school or doing the things that they enjoy. The Salvation Army (which publishes Kids Alive!) runs projects across the world to help people who don’t have safe drinking water.
The theme of water flows throughout the Bible. We all need water to keep us alive, but in the cartoon Bible story (opposite) Jesus offers the woman ‘living water’ that would change her life. The people in the village didn’t like the Samaritan woman because she made some bad choices. Even though Jesus challenged her about her past, he wanted to transform her future. Just as we need water to stay healthy and alive, we need Jesus for our spirit to stay alive for ever. The woman received this water of life from Jesus so that she could always live with him in Heaven. She had been transformed and wanted to tell everyone. The water Jesus offers will never run dry – his love will never run out!

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… I can do all things through Christ because he gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 (International Children’s Bible)

1950s
Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… In August 1950, one of the first computer games, called Bertie the Brain, was shown to the public at an exhibition in Canada. People could play noughts and crosses on the computer, which was about four metres tall!
The first effective polio vaccine was developed in 1952. The vaccine protects children from polio, a disease that can leave people with weak muscles or paralysed (unable to move their muscles). On 29 May 1953, a British climbing expedition made the first successful ascent of Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world. Nepali Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary were the first climbers in the team to reach the top of the mountain.
The Queen’s coronation took place on 2 June 1953 at Westminster Abbey in London. Millions of people in Britain watched the coronation live on BBC TV. The one-day ceremony took 14 months of preparation!

Tobi Oredein Tobi Oredein is a writer, businesswoman and public speaker. While writing for an entertainment magazine, she realised how few black people appeared and worked in the media. So Tobi launched Black Ballad – a website aimed at telling the stories of black women and highlighting issues that affect them. Since then, Black Ballad has grown beyond a website and also organises events for black women, helping them to meet, work with and support other black women. Tobi has appeared as a panellist on a number of TV debates and has been nominated for several journalism and business awards.
Ifeyinwa Frederick
Ifeyinwa Frederick is a writer and businesswoman. At the age of 16, she took her first steps into the world of business when she started a dance school as an alternative to finding a part-time job. Ifeyinwa is passionate about Nigerian food and culture, and is best known as the co-founder of Chuku’s – the world’s first Nigerian tapas restaurant. Ifeyinwa loves being creative and began exploring her passion for writing in 2016 – the first play she wrote was performed at the Hampstead Theatre in 2017. She has been nominated for a number of theatre and business awards, and won the Young British Foodie Awards in 2019.
William Adoasi William Adoasi is a businessman who has always loved jewellery – especially watches. So it’s not surprising that he started a watch company called Vitae London. However, Vitae is a watch company with a difference. Every watch sold helps an African child to attend school for a year. Vitae does this by providing children with two school uniforms, which means they’re allowed to attend school. They also provide children with solar lights, which they can use to study at home in the evenings. Business magazine Forbes has listed William as one of their 25 Leading Black British Business People To Follow.

Dancers Wanted!
It’s International Development Week from 25–31 October – an opportunity to explore, celebrate and support The Salvation Army’s work to overcome poverty around the world.
As part of the celebrations, the International Development team is creating a music video for a brand-new song called ‘God’s Love is Enough’ and they need your help! The video will feature people from all over the world dancing along to the song. Does that sound like something you’d like to do? Watch the actions video at salvationarmy.org.uk/international-development-week and ask someone to record you dancing along to it (be sure to film in landscape, with the phone on its side). Ask your parents or carers to email your video to id@salvationarmy.org.uk by Wednesday 13 October. You’ll be able to watch the finished music video during International Development Week at youtube.com/salvationarmyid.
Alicia’s Arrived at Kids Alive!
Welcome to Alicia – the newest member of the Kids Alive! team! Alicia joined us a few days ago to work as an editorial assistant.
She’s the daughter of Salvation Army officers, so she’s moved around a lot. In fact, she’s lived in 18 houses in four countries on three different continents! Alicia recently moved to London from America, where she worked for The Salvation Army, teaching dance and drama to young people. She also worked at children’s camps and is passionate about helping kids learn about Jesus. Alicia has a baby boy called Josiah who is only eight months old. She loves playing with him and giving him lots of kisses and cuddles. Alicia loved reading Kids Alive! when she was growing up. Her favourite section was the jokes – even the cheesy ones! She is super excited to be on the team and is already hard at work. Alicia can’t wait to see all your colouring pages and competition entries!
