There’s a cricket bat hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!

As far as some traditional cricket fans are concerned, the people who came up with Twenty20 have messed around with the format and rules of the game too much. All that colour, noise and speed … it’s just not cricket! There’s nothing wrong with tradition, but it can be a problem if it stops people from getting into something good, loving it and enjoying it. When Jesus taught people about the way God wanted them to live, he upset the traditionalists of the time. He challenged the religious leaders’ authority and rules, and they did not like it! Jesus knew the way the leaders used their power was stopping people from enjoying a proper relationship with God. I hope you know that being a Christian isn’t about following a set of rules or keeping certain traditions. It’s about loving Jesus with all your heart, living life his way and loving others too.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT GETTING HELP AND SUPPORT FROM OTHERS

A Little Bit of Help

E

very week, members of the Kids Alive! team rely on each other to check their work so that hopefully nobody makes any silly mistakes. We also keep in touch to make sure everybody is OK, especially in the last year or so when we haven’t seen each other much. Who would you turn to if you needed help? Depending on what we need help with, there are lots of different people who can support us. A coach might help if you’re in a sports team, a parent or guardian might help you learn to cook, a music teacher might help you learn to play an instrument or a sibling might teach you how to tie your shoelaces.

Dynamic Duos

by Cara Mott When you read the Bible cartoon on page 5, you’ll see that Barnabas was a friend and role model for Saul, who had only recently become a Christian. Barnabas looked after Saul, helped him to learn more about Jesus and how to teach others about him too. If you’ve got questions about the Bible or how to live a Christian life, there will be people you can rely on too. It might be your parents, guardians, other family members or Sunday school leaders. So have a think about the role models in your life, thank God that they ‘have your back’ (look after you and protect you) and pray that they’ll help you learn how to be the best Christian you can be!

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. Pray for people and churches as they share the good news of Jesus, so that they will continue to reach people and tell them about him.

Acts 8: 4-40

Because the early Christians in Jerusalem were being treated so badly, Philip ran away to Samaria. There he spoke to lots of people about Jesus and performed miracles. Many who saw this believed and joined the church. Later, an angel led Philip to meet an Ethiopian who was reading the book of Isaiah. Philip asked the man if he understood what he was reading. The man said, ‘How can I unless someone explains?’ So Philip explained and told him about Jesus. The man believed, was baptised and went home filled with joy.

o you love all things natural? Whether you live in a city, a village, by the beach or in the countryside, nature is all around you, and this week’s competition is a celebration of the wonderful wild world we’re part of. A Friend to Nature: Activities and Inspiration to Connect with the Wild World starts with the following pledge: ‘This is my pledge, my promise, my vow. Lasting for ever, starting now, I’ll be a friend to nature.’ Being a friend to nature means helping the wildlife and environment on our doorstep and worldwide. The illustrated book is full of short, easy and fun activities to help children connect with nature, as well as some more detailed projects to get stuck into. Alongside the activities, there are quotes, poetry and information about nature – such as the life cycle of a frog and a cross section of a flowering plant. In the final section of the book there’s also an opportunity to explore what nature gives us if we look after it properly. For your opportunity to win a copy of A Friend to Nature: Activities and Inspiration to Connect with the Wild World, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 2 July when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘A Friend to Nature Competition’ in the subject box. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: A Friend to Nature Competition, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN.

place on global celebration that takes World Oceans Day is an annual are ans how amazing the world’s oce 8 June. It’s a day to focus on lthy. keeping the whole planet hea for are y the ant ort imp how and

Did You Know? to see Let’s start with some wonderful watery facts d’s oceans. how much you already know about the worl

Humans have lots in common with oceans. The world is made up of 70 per cent water and 70 per cent of the human body is made up of water too!

Oceans absorb around 30 per cent of Earth’s carbon dioxide, which helps lower the impacts of global warming.

The world’s oceans produce 50 per cent of the planet’s oxygen – oxygen is crucial for living beings.

The deepest known area of Earth’s oceans is called the Mariana Trench – its deepest point is 11,034 metres. That’s a very long dive down!

More than 200,000 species have been discovered in the world’s oceans. However, humans have only explored about five per cent of our oceans, so there are lots more to discover!

12 KA - p12-13 - 6 June.indd 1

28/05/2021 14:59

What’s the Problem? According to research, oceans are now warmer than at any other time since humans have been recording their temperature. Scientists believe that human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and emissions from factories, are having a bad effect and releasing harmful gases into the atmosphere. Rising temperatures cause ice caps to melt, which has a devastating effect on creatures that live in the oceans or rely on them for food.

There’s also a big issue of plastic waste in oceans. Plastic waste includes food packaging, bags and toys that are thrown away. Unfortunately, a lot of this plastic waste ends up in the sea and is known as plastic pollution. Plastic pollution kills marine wildlife and damages ecosystems (communities of living things, such as creatures and plants).

Overfishing the world’s oceans has also meant that many species are being removed from the water faster than they can be replaced naturally. Overfishing is the opposite to sustainable fishing and it’s a big problem. Modern industrial fishing often uses huge boats known as super trawlers. These fishing boats can catch and carry thousands of tons of fish. If things continue the way they’re going, some experts believe the oceans may be close to empty by 2050 – that’s in just 29 years! So the oceans need our help and protection now more than ever!

How You Can Help The first step to helping to protect the world’s oceans is learning as much as possible about them. There are lots of documentaries to watch, including David Attenborough’s Blue Planet. You can also visit websites, such as wwf.org.uk (World Wildlife Fund) and natgeokids.com/uk (National Geographic Kids).

There are also lots of ways to help reduce the impact of you and your family on Earth’s oceans. Here are some suggestions… • Reduce, reuse and recycle your plastic waste. Ask your parents or guardians to try to buy products that use as little plastic packaging as possible and make sure you recycle all the plastic items that need to be bought. • You can also reuse many plastic items, such as bags, food storage boxes and water bottles. There are even plastic-free alternatives for your bathroom – swap liquid handwash or shampoo for bars of soap and shampoo. • Never flush wet wipes down the toilet! • Reduce the amount of fish you eat and ask your parents or guardians to check food labels to make sure the fish they buy is marked as ‘sustainably sourced’. • Try to reduce the amount of harmful emissions your family adds to Earth’s atmosphere. This could include using less electricity (turn appliances off when you’re not using them) and walking places instead of being driven.

If you fancy getting creative you could also celebrate World Oceans Day by drawing or painting a poster or writing a story or poem to let others know how important our oceans are. If you do, we’d love to see your creations, so email a photo of what you come up with to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk!
