t’s time to break out your inner explorer this September and get up close and personal with local history, architecture and culture, as all four nations in the UK celebrate European Heritage Days. The good news is that all events are absolutely free! In England, participants are invited to savour the flavour as the theme for this year’s Heritage Open Days (10 to 19 September) is Edible England. Those of you in the North East can sample a Taste of the Toon as you chomp your way around Grainger Town in Newcastle. Further south, participants are being invited to picnic like Victorians in Berkhamsted. If you’re after something more spine-tingling, Wombwell Cemetery in Barnsley is open for you to try the weird and wonderful foody traditions of the graveyard with CemeTreats and Funeral Feasts. Inclusion: Exploring Our Hidden History Together is the theme for European Heritage Open Days in Northern Ireland. Taking place from 6 to 12 September, more than 250 heritage buildings, which aren’t normally open to the public, will be open for exploration and investigation. In Scotland Doors Open events will take place throughout September with online and in-person activities for participants to enjoy. Around 1,000 buildings will throw open their doors for history seekers to uncover hidden architectural gems in all sorts of locations. Similarly, in Wales, Open Doors runs throughout September with a host of historical buildings and sites holding free events and activities.

For more info and to find an event near you, check out these sites… heritageopendays.org.uk discovernorthernireland.com/ehod doorsopendays.org.uk cadw.gov.wales

Did you know that some of the most beautiful buildings in the world are all front? They have something called a façade that hides what is really quite a plain building. I’ve visited lots of buildings with fancy fronts, but when I wandered around the back, or even stepped inside, they were very dull. Some people can be like that. On the outside everything about them seems fine – they smile, wear nice clothes and say the right things. But on the inside they’re far from fine. They’re wearing a façade. God doesn’t want us to wear façades. He wants to know the real us and he wants to help us become the very best people we can be. God starts working on us from the inside – he starts with our hearts and in time the goodness inside us shines out for all to see. Why don’t you let God start to work on you today?

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT LOOKING AFTER GOD’S GIFT OF CREATION

How Could You Change? asks Justin Reeves

I

’m a dad and I take my responsibility as a dad very seriously. I do everything I can to look after my daughters. I encourage them to eat healthily and exercise regularly, help them with their reading and other schoolwork, keep them safe, show them what it means to know and love Jesus, have fun with them and give them lots of cuddles. Have you ever heard anyone talk about God as your Father in Heaven? If you’ve ever said or heard the Lord’s Prayer you might have noticed that it begins with the line ‘Our Father, who is in Heaven’. Well, God is our heavenly father and it’s a responsibility he takes very seriously. He takes it so seriously that he created a whole world with

everything we need to live a healthy life. When someone receives an amazing gift like that, don’t you think they should look after it? Sadly, not all of us are very good at looking after God’s gift of creation. We might not even realise when we’re damaging the world. For example, how many times have your parents or carers shouted at you for leaving a light on after you’ve walked out of a room? I’m not saying I’m perfect. I do try to behave in a way that doesn’t hurt our world, but I know there’s more I could do to look after our planet – I could use my car less for a start. What changes could you make to show that you’re serious about looking after our wonderful world?

Space for Change Use this space to write or draw things you could do to slow climate change. Then say a prayer asking God to help everyone take better care of the world we live in.

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… The first Nobel prizes were awarded in 1901. The winners included Germans Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (who discovered X-rays) and Emil von Behring (who discovered a vaccine for diphtheria, a very dangerous bacterial infection) and the Swiss Henry Dunant – a Christian who helped to start the Red Cross.

The first stuffed toy bears were created in the 1900s! In Germany in 1902, Margarete Steiff made a small, jointed toy bear – it was called Bear 55 PB. In America in 1903, Morris Mitchum created a soft bear cub. He called it ‘Teddy’s bear’ because the USA president Theodore Roosevelt – known as ‘Teddy’ – had refused to kill an injured bear while out hunting. Teddy bears were an immediate success! The first manual for boy scouts was published in 1908. Written by Robert Baden-Powell, Scouting for Boys included info on observation, tracking, woodcraft skills, self-improvement and the British Empire, as well as stories from Robert’s adventures and boyhood experiences.

A Call to Action The United Nations International Day of Charity was started to make more people aware of the amazing work that charities do all over the world. The UN also hopes that it will encourage more people to take action and support charities either by making donations or volunteering to help charities with the work they do.

A ‘Nobel’ Cause International Day of Charity takes place every year on 5 September. The reason the UN chose this date was to commemorate the death of Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was a nun who was well known for the care and love she showed to the poor, the sick, orphans and people who were dying in Kolkata in India. In 1979, Mother Teresa received the Nobel Prize for peace ‘for her work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace’. What is a Charity? It might surprise you to know that someone can’t simply decide they want to do something nice for people, get a bunch of pals together, start raising money and call themselves a charity.

To be a charity an organisation needs to ‘be of benefit’ and ‘benefit the public’. In other words they need to do something positive for others for example, relieving poverty, or helping people to get into the arts, culture, heritage or science.

In the UK, an organisation called the Charity Commission decides whether an organisation can be a charity. The Charity Commission also keeps a close eye on charities to make sure they stick to laws and guidance designed to ensure they’re being honest, spending the money they raise in the right way and doing what they promised to do.

People and Pounds There are hundreds of thousands of charities all over the world, including around 166,000 in the UK. Keeping these charities going isn’t cheap – every year, UK charities raise and spend a whopping £48 billion to help and support those who need their expertise and assistance.

Donating money is just one way to support a charity. Many people choose to help and support charities by volunteering. That means they give their time and offer their skills and expertise for free. Volunteers might spend a few hours a week working in a shop; drive people to hospital appointments; collect and deliver clothes or furniture; coach, tutor and mentor children and young people; rescue and care for animals; spend time with people who are lonely or feeling sad ... the list goes on.

The Big Collection As well as being a church, The Salvation Army (which publishes Kids Alive!) is a registered charity. Every September, the Army runs The Big Collection – a fundraising campaign to raise money for its social and community work. The money raised supports the Army’s work with people who are vulnerable or need help. This includes helping people who are experiencing homelessness, running care homes and day centres for older people, reuniting families through its Family Tracing Service, offering training and advice to people looking for long-term work and providing safe places for victims of modern slavery. This September, keep your eyes and ears open for Salvation Army volunteers doing all sorts of things – including sponsored bike rides, bake sales, fun runs and charity fashion shows – to raise money for The Big Collection.

For more information about how you and your family can support the work of The Salvation Army, visit salvationarmy.org.uk/big-collection salvationarmy.org.uk/big-collection.

Flying Fundraiser! Alison jumped out of a plane to raise more than £2,400 for Watford Salvation Army! She decided to do a tandem skydive from 13,000 feet (about 3,960 metres) after seeing the work that The Salvation Army in Watford does to help children who need meals during school holidays. Alison looks after children’s spiritual and mental health at Beechfield Primary School. She said that she took the plunge to ‘support those in our town who need it most’. We think that’s awesome!

Get In Touch The ‘Kids Alive!’ team isn’t working in the office at the moment, but we still want to hear from our readers. Please email your news, colourings, reader profiles and anything else you’d like to share with us to: kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk. We’d especially like to know whether your church or Sunday school is doing something cool during this difficult time. So get in touch to let us know how you’re staying connected!
