rawing is a fantastic way to recreate things you find beautiful or interesting, share your feelings or tell a story. It’s also good for your well-being, gets your brain working in new ways and improves your creativity. These are all fab reasons to get involved in the world’s largest drawing festival – The Big Draw! Throughout October there will be loads of The Big Draw events, both digital and physical, taking place in schools, libraries, museums, galleries, outdoor spaces and online. The festival’s theme this year is about climate change and encourages people to create artworks about taking care of the planet. You could draw on your own, sketch with mates or take part in big community creations. A blank piece of paper can be a bit scary, so why not try something a bit different to help you get creating? It’s great fun to draw in the sand with a stick, paint with water on a pavement, sketch on windows with chalk pens (as long as your parents or guardians say it’s OK) or create a collage using recycled materials. You could also create a picture outdoors using natural things, such as pebbles, twigs, leaves, conkers and pinecones. Whatever your favourite art material, make sure you join thousands of people from all over the world and get drawing this month! For more info visit thebigdraw.org
I have a great job! I work with a fab team, I get to write and sometimes I even get to draw. I love drawing! When I was young I’d always have a pencil and paper with me. When you’ve got something to draw with you don’t need anything else to keep you entertained. You have a blank canvas on which to let your imagination run wild. Just go with whatever comes into your mind… a footballer scoring the winning goal at Wembley, a Leeny-Zeeny-Dweeby from the planet Zobb or a Zumba-dancing fairy keeping fit. Before the universe existed, God had a blank canvas and let his imagination go wild. What an amazing job he did – he even imagined you! And God wants you to use your imagination and enjoy being creative too. However you do it – drawing, writing, painting, singing, dancing, playing music – find a way to get creative!

Read the comment below and think about ways to make the world a fairer place
Can You Make a Difference? asks Justin Reeves
I
T’S NOT FAIR! Have you ever said that? If not, I’m sure you’ve heard someone else say it. It’s the kind of thing that gets yelled when people don’t get their own way. Many of the things that seem unfair to us are relatively small and easy to sort out, or soon forgotten about – things like not being allowed to play with a particular toy or join in with a certain activity or game. Usually there’s a good reason why you’re not allowed to do something. There are also some pretty big situations that are really unfair and are difficult to resolve. The news is full of stories about people who suffer, are hurt or even killed because of the selfish actions of others.
It can be hard to know what anyone can do to help. Having said that, we can all do something to help make the world a fairer place through the choices we make and the way we behave. Think about it. Are you fair in the way you treat others? Are you always kind? Do you do your best to include as many people as possible in the things you do? Do you stand up for people who might not be able to take care of themselves? What about the things your family buys? Could you buy more fair trade or environmentally friendly products? Yes, it’s tricky to know how to change those big unfair situations, but sometimes what seem like small changes can make a big difference.

Living Like Jesus – Loving Your Neighbour Written by KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku – illustrated by Steve English
Did you know that the most important commandments in the Bible are to love God and to love your neighbour? Jesus was great at doing this, so let’s follow his example by loving God and our neighbours too.
Jesus Eats With Sinners
Levi – a tax collector – was at work when Jesus approached him. ‘Follow me,’ Jesus said. Levi got up straight away and followed him. Later that day, Levi held a feast in Jesus’ honour and invited his friends who were also tax collectors. When the religious leaders saw this, they were really annoyed and asked, ‘Why is Jesus eating with tax collectors and sinners?’ Jesus replied, ‘Sick people need a doctor, not the healthy. I have come to help those who do wrong to change their ways.’
Living Like Jesus
Christianity isn’t just for ‘good’ people. It’s for everyone, even those who have made mistakes. Jesus knew that Levi was ready to live God’s way but he needed someone to show him how. That’s why Jesus was happy to spend time with Levi and his friends.
Loving Your Neighbour
Is there someone you know who’s made some wrong choices? Do you think they would like to change? Talk to them about Jesus’ love and forgiveness – it could be the good news they hear that makes all the difference!

The word OK comes from the misspelt words ‘oll korrekt’! In the 1830s people, including newspaper editors, would misspell certain words on purpose as a joke. One of the most famous phrases to be changed in this way was ‘all correct’ to ‘oll korrekt’, which was then shortened to OK. Other examples of abbreviated comic misspellings included OW for ‘oll wright’ (all right) and KG for ‘know go’ (no go), but only OK continues to be used all over the world!

Britain’s first slave trader is believed to have been John Hawkins who sailed from Plymouth way back in 1562 to Guinea and kidnapped about 400 Africans. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning. During the 17th and 18th centuries Britain played a crucial role in taking African people from their homes and selling them to work in places such as cotton and sugar plantations in America. Although there were no plantations in the UK, slaves were bought and sold in UK ports and some ‘served’ in rich households. British slave traders were very rich, because slavery made them a lot of money.

You might have seen on the news earlier this year the story of the Edward Colston statue being pulled down in Bristol. Cities such as London, Liverpool, Glasgow and Bristol were major ports, so many rich slave traders have roads named after them or statues in these and other UK cities even today. When slavery ended in the British Empire, the government had to borrow millions of pounds to buy freedom for many slaves. This money didn’t go to the slaves themselves, though, it went to the slave traders. The money used was only finally paid back by British taxpayers in 2015 – just five years ago!

Staying Connected
Children’s workers at Bedford Salvation Army have been working very hard to make sure their kids can still learn lots about Jesus from home. Since Easter the team has been creating weekly kids church videos, which have included songs, stories, science experiments, illustrations, crafts and other activities that the children can join in with from home. The team really misses seeing the kids every week at church, but hopes these videos will help them and their families feel connected. Here are some photos of what the team has been up to.
