Remember to say a big…

THANK YOU!

Have you heard the saying, ‘It doesn’t cost anything to say thank you’? It’s so true – saying thank you is one of the easiest things we can do but it can mean so much! It’s been a difficult time during the coronavirus pandemic and Thank You Day on Sunday (4 July) is the perfect opportunity to thank those who’ve helped us to get through the past 15 months. All over the country, friends, families and communities will celebrate Thank You Day with fun activities to say thank you for everything that’s been done to support one another. You can organise your own thank you party or join in with Thank You Day events taking place near you. These include a park run followed by a picnic brunch; The Big Lunch, a community picnic or street party with neighbours; a Power Hour to tidy up shared spaces; Thank You for the Music, a play or sing-a-long performance; Cheers for Volunteers, to thank volunteers who have helped us; and a barbecue at the end of the day – the nation’s biggest ever cookout led by celebrity chef, Levi Roots. It doesn’t matter what you do, readers, as long as you find some way to say thank you!

For more info about Thank You Day visit thankyouday.org.uk

There’s a bunch of flowers hidden on every page of this week’s issue. See if you can find them all!

Like lots of people, I’ve been working from home for quite some time. That means I spend most of the day by myself, so I listen to the radio for some company. As well as enjoying the music, I get to listen to people chatting and I join in the quizzes too. Recently the radio station I listen to has been playing a new song by Diana Ross called ‘Thank You’. Through the song she thanks someone (I don’t know who) for always being there. At one point she simply says, ‘Thank you for my life’. The song reminds me that I have lots to be thankful for. So on Thank You Day I’ll say thank you for family, friends, colleagues, church, schoolteachers, nurses (especially the one who jabbed me twice!) and the radio. Most of all, I’ll thank God for my life and for always being there for me.

Look Out and Listen! says Steve English

as a friend ever had to grab your attention by waving at you or doing something unusual? This is what God did to Moses by setting a bush on fire without making it burn. Looking back on Moses’ life we can see that it was full of amazing miracles – from the parting of the Red Sea to being provided with manna (a special kind of food given by God) from Heaven. The burning bush was the first of these miracles and God did it simply to grab Moses’ attention. God knew that Moses would be curious enough to want to move nearer and see the bush close up for himself. It was then that God spoke to him and set

Moses on a great lifelong adventure. Like Moses, we should be curious about the world around us that was made by God. Paul, one of the early Christians, who has featured in the last few Bible cartoons, once said that since the beginning of the world God has been clearly seen in his creation. So next time you’re outside, playing with your friends or going for a walk with your family (or your sheep) be curious enough to look out for God in the wonderful world we live in. It may be that he wants to talk to you, and if he does, don’t be afraid as Moses was. You don’t want to miss out on a great adventure.

Miraculous Message When Moses asked God who he was, God had an answer for him. Shade the flames that have dots inside them to discover God’s reply.

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. Thank God for the times that he’s helped you through difficult situations and pray that wherever you are you’ll be a blessing to others, just like Paul was.

Acts 27 and 28

On their way to Rome, Paul and his companions were caught in a storm. Their ship crashed, but everyone survived. Safely ashore in Malta, a venomous snake latched on to Paul’s arm but, miraculously, he was unharmed! The father of Malta’s chief official was sick, so Paul prayed and the man was healed. When the islanders heard about it they went to Paul to be healed too. Eventually, Paul made it to Rome. He was under house arrest, but spent the next two years sharing the good news of Jesus with everyone who came to see him.

The world’s oldest, operating amusement park opened in 1583! Bakken (Hill) in Denmark began as a place to drink clean spring water, which people believed could cure illnesses. Large crowds then attracted entertainers from all over Europe, and Bakken eventually developed into a modern amusement park. The park now has five roller coasters, including an old wooden roller coaster that has been open since 1932. It can reach a speed of about 47 miles per hour – pretty good for an 89-year-old ride!

Challenge Yourself

Do a bin audit! You’ll need plenty of space, perhaps a garden or driveway, rubber gloves and a big sheet (or some spare bin bags). With your family’s help, gather your rubbish bins, including recycling. (Top tip – don’t do this too long after bin day as some rubbish can get a bit smelly!) Separate the rubbish into piles, such as recycling and general waste and empty it on to the big sheet. What is your rubbish mostly made up of – batteries, paper, food, plastic bottles, soft plastic wrappers, cans, cardboard or glass? If you discover that you’re throwing away a lot of plastic, think about ways you can reduce that. Perhaps you could replace bottles of shampoo and conditioner with shampoo and conditioner bars, or use bars of soap instead of soap in single-use bottles. You could also swap plastic water bottles for reusable bottles and plastic bags for reusable ones.

Challenge Yourself Does your school have a plastic free or environmental committee? If there isn’t one, talk to your headteacher about setting one up. Then you can explore all sorts of challenges, such as organising school events to inform people about going plastic free or reviewing the school’s stationery list and suggesting plastic-free alternatives.

Challenge Yourself Talk to your church leaders about becoming an eco church. There’s loads of information and a survey leaders can complete at ecochurch.arocha.org.uk.

Farmers in Zimbabwe Regular readers might remember that we’ve featured stories from farmers in Zimbabwe who are being supported by The Salvation Army’s Feeding Hope – Helping-Hand appeal. Some of those Zimbabwean farmers are also doing their bit to reduce plastic waste. Training courses run by The Salvation Army help farmers learn how to use local and organic mulch. Organic mulch still protects the seeds and helps them to grow, but they’re better for our world than expensive synthetic fertilisers that would need to be transported around the country in plastic bags. So everyone can do their bit! To find out more about how you can support farmers in Zimbabwe, visit salvationarmy.org.uk/feedinghope.

Challenge Yourself Does your favourite comic come wrapped in a plastic bag? Is there always a plastic toy attached to the front? If so, get in touch with the comic and ask them to consider reducing their plastic use.
