‘LET THERE BE LIGHT!’ Those are the first words spoken by God, right at the beginning of the Bible (check out Genesis 1:3). It’s amazing to think that from the very first day, God knew that the world needed light! That’s not the only mention of light in the Bible. Light is mentioned loads of times – check out John 8:12 to read about Jesus as the Light of the World! All over the world people are about to celebrate Halloween – a festival that began because people were afraid of the darkness that comes with the longer nights of autumn and winter. They believed that at this time of year ghosts and other evil spirits were allowed to roam the Earth, causing all sorts of mischief and mayhem. Understandably, they found this a pretty scary idea, so they lit bonfires and lanterns to frighten the ghastly ghouls away. Whether it’s the dark or something else, most of us have fears we have to face. Usually when we’re scared we just need a bit of comfort or someone who’ll help us to deal with the things we’re frightened of. The good news is that whatever scary situations we face, Jesus is always there for us. When we choose to live Jesus’ way, we know he’ll shine a ‘light’ to guide us and protect us. With Jesus, the Light of the World, as our friend we don’t need to be afraid of the dark or anything else. Let Jesus into your life and let there be light!

I’m not a fan of these darker days, but one bonus of autumn is we get to enjoy an extra hour on Sunday because the clocks go back an hour. Strictly speaking, the clocks go back in the middle of the night, so most of us will know nothing about it. However, if you’re someone who wakes up at the same time every day, you’ll get an extra hour to play with! Say you normally wake up at 8am, when you wake up on Sunday morning it’ll actually be 7am. Now, there’s a lot you can do with an extra hour: read Kids Alive!, complete the puzzles in Giggle in the Middle or colour our ‘Let Your Light Shine!’ poster. Of course, you could spend an hour with Jesus by reading your Bible and talking to him through prayer. Whatever you do with your extra hour, do something that brightens your day!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW WE CAN TALK TO GOD WHEN WE DON’T FEEL SAFE

In Safe Hands

W

says Cara Mott

ho would you call if you were in trouble? Your parents? Your older brother or sister? A grandparent? As well as family and friends there are also people whose job it is to keep us safe. If you need help when you’re at school, your teachers are there to assist you. There are also the police who can help you if you’re in trouble, firefighters who can be called in an emergency and paramedics, doctors and nurses whose job it is to try to help you get better if you’re ill or hurt. God’s provided us with people, such as those mentioned above, who can help to keep us safe. But as well as people whose job it is to look after us, we also have God to help us.

Have you read this week’s cartoon Bible story on the opposite page? King Hezekiah is worried about the King of Assyria attacking his city. However, God’s prophet Isaiah tells Hezekiah not to worry because God has said he will look after him. I’m pretty sure most of you don’t need to worry about being attacked by rival kings, but there might be other situations in your life where you feel unsafe. If you do have troublesome situations, remember there are always people you can talk to who can help – police, doctors, teachers, parents, guardians and, of course, God. God always wants us to feel safe, so talk to him.

Living Like Jesus – Loving Your Neighbour Written by KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku – illustrated by Steve English

Did you know that the most important commandments in the Bible are to love God and to love your neighbour? Jesus was great at doing this, so let’s follow his example by loving God and our neighbours too.

Zacchaeus

Zacchaeus, a wealthy but short tax collector, couldn’t see Jesus above the crowd, so he climbed a tree to get a better view. Jesus looked up and said, ‘Zacchaeus, today I’m coming to your house.’ Zacchaeus and the crowd were surprised – Jesus was going to eat with a sinner! Feeling sorry about his bad choices, Zacchaeus said, ‘I’ll give half my money to the poor and pay back four times the amount I cheated from people.’ Jesus was pleased and said, ‘Today is the day for this family to be saved from sin.’

Living Like Jesus

Jesus knew that Zacchaeus had cheated many people, but that didn’t stop him from sharing his love. Jesus’ kindness helped Zacchaeus realise that he needed to change his ways. Zacchaeus changed on the inside and immediately showed it by putting his new faith into action and becoming part of God’s family.

Loving Your Neighbour

Zacchaeus took real steps to show that he had changed and was going to live his life Jesus’ way. Is there something that you can do or stop doing to show you’re serious about living your life Jesus’ way too?

KA! JAM is the cooles t Bible activity club around. As a member you’ll go on amazing adventures through th e Bible learning about Jesus. Ancient Egyptians used dead mice to ease toothache! Old Egyptian records show that mashed mouse was sometimes blended with herbs and other ingredients into a paste and put on painful teeth. In Elizabethan times in England, mice were used as a cure for warts – people would cut a dead mouse in half and apply it to the spot. They also used mice to treat whooping cough, measles and smallpox!

e’ve teamed up with educational toy manufacturer Learning Resources to celebrate the fun-damentals of coding and offer you the opportunity to win a Botley 2.0 The Coding Robot Activity Set. Coding isn’t just for budding computer whizzes, introducing coding at home can help support a child’s entire learning journey. Coding is fun and can help children practise cause-and-effect thinking and learn agility, resilience and persistence skills. With Botley 2.0 children can experiment and solve problems – program Botley to perform a sequence of steps to avoid obstacles, manoeuvre through courses and move objects. Or have a go at discovering the hidden features to make Botley do different things. The Activity Set includes coding cards, boards, sticks, cubes, cones, flags, balls, a goal and a sheet of stickers. As well as Botley 2.0 The Coding Robot Activity Set as first prize, there will also be runner-up prizes for Coding Critters Scamper and Sneak and Coding Critters Ranger and Zip. For your opportunity to win a Botley 2.0 The Coding Robot Activity Set or one of the runner-up prizes, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 27 November when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Coding Robot Competition’ in the subject box. You can also enter by filling in the details on the coupon below and posting it to: Coding Robot Competition, Kids Alive! 101 Newington Causeway, London SE1 6BN.

According to UK Government statistics, black people are 10 times more likely to be stopped and searched by the police than white people. Stop and search is when a police officer stops you to ask you questions and can also search you if they believe you have something on you such as drugs or a weapon. Being stopped and searched can make people feel very uncomfortable and afraid. Children from black communities often also face challenges in education. The UK’s Department for Education statistics show that black Caribbean students are three times more likely to be excluded from school than white British pupils.

Black Lives Matter

Have you heard anyone using the term Black Lives Matter? Some people misunderstand this phrase and think it means that only black lives matter, but that’s not what it means. Black Lives Matter means that black lives are equally as important as people of other races and there are inequalities that black people face that need to be highlighted and changed.

Top Tips It’s not just charities that can change things, everybody can make a difference. Here are some ways you can do your bit to change the world!

If you see someone being treated unfairly because of their race, speak out and tell a grown-up you trust.

Share what you’ve learned during Black History Month with your friends and family so you can help them to understand better too.

Be kind to everyone no matter what race, religion they are or background they have. Include people in your friendship groups at school and never treat someone badly because they’re different to you.

Listen to, support and pray for your friends if something upsetting has happened to them.

Find Out More Here’s our last list of great TV programmes and websites. Remember, learning about black history isn’t just important for people who are black. Black history is everyone’s history, so we all need to learn together.
