This week’s Marvellous Memory Verse (check out page 6) is one of my favourite Bible verses. I’ve spent a lot of time as a grown-up leading or helping with Salvation Army activities for kids and, of course, I’m the editor of Kids Alive! Matthew 19:14 is a verse that I’ve shared with hundreds of children and lots of grown-ups too. I like it because Jesus is making it clear that children are really important to him. In fact, he says that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to you. That kind of makes you royalty, don’t you know! We live in a world that can sometimes be scary, so it’s great to know that the greatest person ever to have lived on Earth is on your side. Jesus loves you and wants the best for you. Whatever’s going on in your life, good or bad, Jesus wants to be part of it.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT BEING A LIGHT IN THE WORLD!

Shine Bright! says Alicia Begley

I

like to think I’m not scared of anything, but I am! I don’t really like heights and sometimes I get a bit nervous when it’s dark. It might feel like there are things in the world that are frightening and no one understands, but God does. In fact, as the Bible cartoon opposite shows us, there are some pretty crazy things in the Bible. The Old Testament (which was written before Jesus lived on Earth) has loads of stories, including David defeating the giant Goliath and Jonah being swallowed by a massive sea creature! The New Testament tells us about some interesting things that Jesus did, including healing sick people and even bringing a man back to life!

If we decide to follow Jesus, he will protect us. We don’t have to be scared because Jesus defeated the darkness by dying on the cross. I don’t mean darkness when you turn out the light (although that can be scary). This type of darkness is our sin – the things we do that aren’t kind or right. Jesus is the light that helps us out of our darkness. Think about a really dark room. If you turn on a tablet it can create a lot of light, even though it’s small. We have to be little lights in the world. It might be that you’re kind to someone at school who has no friends or you pick up some rubbish you find. They’re small acts but these little lights will help the world to shine brighter!

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me. Don’t stop them, because the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to people who are like these children.’ Matthew 19:14 (International Children’s Bible)

1980s

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… The Rubik’s Cube went on worldwide sale in 1980. Hungarian architect Ernö Rubik invented the cube as a teaching tool for his students. They loved playing with it, so Rubik decided to make it more widely available. Today it’s the world’s bestselling puzzle game. On 1 September 1985 the shipwreck of the Titanic was found off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. Titanic set sail from Southampton for New York in 1912. Four days into its voyage it hit an iceberg and sank.

On 9 November 1989 the Berlin Wall was brought down! The wall was built by the Soviet Union in 1961 to stop East Germans from escaping to West Germany. In 1989, half a million protesters gathered in East Berlin at the border crossing. Barriers on the border were opened and thousands of people entered West Berlin freely for the first time. Many climbed parts of the wall and knocked them down. Visitors to Berlin can see sections of the wall that have been left as an historic monument.

Guvna  B

Isaac Borquaye, better known as Guvna B, is an award-winning rapper who has topped the charts with his clean rap albums. Guvna B has toured across the world to make a positive impact through his music. Choosing to be bold and ignore current trends for music lyrics, he aims to inspire people to be the best they can be. One of Guvna B’s favourite quotes is, ‘Be who you needed when you were younger’ and that’s what he tries to be for young people. He encourages young people to find something they enjoy doing to help them with whatever they’re going through.  He’s also launched a clothing line, Allo Mate, as alternative rap merchandise for urban communities with clean messages printed on the items.

Sheku Kanneh-Mason and family Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a young British cello player who was the first black musician to win the BBC Young Musician award in 2016. Known for playing at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, Sheku has performed at the BAFTAs, BBC Proms and the Royal Variety Performance. One of seven children, all of Sheku’s siblings are musical and in 2015 they made it to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent. The Kanneh-Masons give classical music personality and character to try to introduce it to a new audience. In May, the siblings won the Global Award for Best Classical Artist 2021.

YolanDa Brown

Growing up in London, YolanDa tried learning piano, violin, drums, oboe and more before settling on the saxophone as her instrument. She didn’t want all the lessons and theory, but instead taught herself so she could really ‘feel the music’. YolanDa describes her music as ‘posh reggae’ that is a mix of reggae, jazz and soul. She is the number one female saxophone musician in the United Kingdom and has won numerous awards including a Black Magic Award and a MOBO (Music of Black Origin) Award. Her popular CBeebies TV programme YolanDa’s Band Jam introduces children to different musical instruments and shows how fun music making can be.

PROUD TO BBEE Black History Month Profile Regular readers will know that throughout October we’ve been celebrating Black History Month and bigging up some modern-day history makers. Now that you’ve read about just a handful of groundbreaking Black British role models, we thought you might like to write or draw about your own Black History Month hero. They don’t have to be famous – you could choose one of your relations, a teacher, someone who runs a club you attend, a person from church… the choice is yours! Maybe you could interview them to find out some fascinating facts about them. If you don’t know your hero personally, see what you can find out about them on the internet. Continue on a separate piece of paper if you need more space.

I THINK I NEED TO GO TO THE OPTICIAN’S AND GET MY EYES TESTED.

I’VE BEEN GETTING A LOT OF HEADACHES RECENTLY, PATCH.

SO…

YOU MOST CERTAINLY DO, SIR!

I THINK I NEED NEW GLASSES.

WOW! THAT’S CLEVER. CAN OPTICIANS WORK THAT OUT WITHOUT EVEN TESTING MY EYES?

I DON’T KNOW, SIR. I WORKED IT OUT BECAUSE THIS IS THE BAKERY. THE OPTICIAN’S IS NEXT DOOR.

YOU DEFINITELY NEED YOUR EYES TESTED!
