I
This year’s theme for Black History Month reminds me of a song called ‘Proud’, because the first line of the chorus asks, ‘What have you done today to make you feel proud?’ Some days I would struggle to answer that question. However, there are lots of things I’m proud of: Kids Alive! and Team KA!, my family, where I come from, my football team, my friends … the list goes on. But feeling proud isn’t always about things you do or the things you love, you can just feel proud of being you. However you feel about yourself, the things you do, or the people and things in your life, I want to remind you that God is proud of you. He made you just the way he wants you (there is only one you!), he loves you and wants to help you be the best you can be. And God wants you to be Proud To Be!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW WE CAN HELP OTHER PEOPLE
That’s Not Fair! says Alicia Begley
B
‘
ut that’s not fair!’ Is this something you’ve ever said? It doesn’t always feel nice when other people have things that you don’t have – for example, a brand-new iPad or the latest trendy trainers. We may not have the latest Nike shoes, but there are others in the world who don’t have food on the table. The Salvation Army (which publishes Kids Alive!) has a long history of helping people. The cartoon Bible story opposite shows some of the things we can do to help people – such as sharing our food with hungry people or giving clothes to those who don’t have any. The Bible even says we can bring people suffering homelessness into our homes! We probably can’t invite people off the street into our homes or even buy them a house (I don’t know about
you, but my piggy bank doesn’t have enough in it to buy a house!). However, we can support charities that help people find safe places to live. It might feel like these are really big problems, and you can’t do anything to help, but here’s what you can do. Think about whether you have any clothes that you don’t wear often or toys you don’t really play with anymore. Instead of just throwing them away, you could take them to a charity shop, or give them to someone who would enjoy them more. Sometimes, challenging injustice means giving up our own things for others. God wants everyone to live a life full of joy, excitement, learning and caring. If you do these things, you can show God’s love to others through what you do and truly shine for him.
Word Fit
Read the Bible verse from Micah 6:8 and write the underlined words into the grid. The letters in the shaded column will reveal a new word that links to this week’s cartoon Bible story.
The Lord has told you what is good. He has told you what he wants from you: Do what is right to other people. Love being kind to others. And live humbly, trusting your God. (International Children’s Bible)

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well. Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… Three Disney cartoon movie favourites were released in the 1940s – Pinocchio (February 1940), Dumbo (October 1941) and Bambi (August 1942).
The popular fast food company McDonald’s started out in May 1940 when Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their McDonald’s Bar-B-Q restaurant in San Bernadino, USA. McDonald’s now serves about 69 million customers every day in more than 100 countries. The first images of the Earth were taken from space in 1946. American scientists in New Mexico launched a V-2 missile carrying a 35-millimetre motion picture camera into space. Pictures of the Earth were taken at an altitude of 65 miles, just above the beginning of outer space. The film survived the crash landing because it was encased in a steel cassette.
The Second World War ended in September 1945.

lewis hamilton Lewis Hamilton’s racing career started at the age of eight. He won the British Kart Championship by the time he was 10. The first and, so far, only black Formula One driver, Lewis thundered on to the F1 scene in 2007, narrowly missing out on the World Driver’s Championship in his first-ever season. The following year, aged 23, he became the youngest F1 World Driver’s Champion at the time (Sebastian Vettel broke that record in 2010). Since then, Lewis has gone on to win another six world titles, equalling the record set by Michael Schumacher, and holds the world record for the most F1 race wins.
Ade Adepitan
These days Ade Adepitan is probably best known as a TV presenter and actor – he’s hosted BBC One’s The One Show and appeared in EastEnders. However, Ade first became a household name as a wheelchair basketball player, helping the British wheelchair basketball team take a bronze medal at the 2004 Paralympics in Athens, followed by a gold medal at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in 2015. Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1973, Ade got polio when he was just 15 months old. This prevented him from walking. However, from an early age he had a desire to be a successful sportsperson and never let his disability get in the way of achieving his dream.
Nicola Adams
Most of you will probably recognise Nicola Adams from her time as a contestant on last year’s Strictly Come Dancing. But did you know that Nicola is an undefeated former professional boxer? She first stepped into a boxing ring when she was 13 years old, but because not many girls or women were boxing at the time, she had to wait a whole four years for another fight. Nicola is also a former WBO world champion and has a lot of gold medals to be proud of, including Olympic golds from London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016. A pioneer of women’s boxing, Nicola was awarded an MBE in 2013 and an OBE in 2017, both for services to boxing.
