Happy New Year, readers! The Kids Alive! team hopes you had a fantastic Christmas and enjoyed plenty of rest, as well as a fun time with your family. Lots of people will be glad to see the back of 2020, because it was very tough for many people. But that’s the great thing about a new year – it’s full of hope! Hope that it’ll be so much better than the last. There’s lots of hope about the new coronavirus vaccines and how they might help us all get back to a more normal way of life. There’s also excitement about the events that might be able to go ahead this year. Hopefully we’ll get to watch some epic sports events that were postponed last year, such as the Euros and Olympics! Perhaps you already have some events in your 2021 diary. Maybe you have a new baby cousin due this year or a big birthday to celebrate. Or you could be looking forward to starting a new school or joining a new hobby club and making lots of new friends. Whatever 2021 brings, we hope it’s a great one for all of you! Happy New Year!

There’s a party popper hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!

Welcome to 2021! How did you celebrate the New Year? Did your family have a party with yummy snacks, fizzy pop and party poppers? Were you allowed to stay up to hear Big Ben’s bongs? Did you go first-footing? There’s something exciting about a new year – I always think of it like a brand-new exercise book with a bundle of blank pages to fill with fab stuff. Whenever I got a new exercise book at school, I would promise myself that I would keep it really neat and fill it with my very best work. At the start of a new year I always promise myself that I’m going to make it a good one and fill it with the very best of everything. Who knows what 2021 will be like? What I do know is it’s packed with potential – let’s do our best to make it a good one.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW GOD SENT JESUS TO BE WITH US FOR EVER

Christmas and Beyond!

H

appy Christmas, readers! I know what you’re thinking: ‘Happy Christmas? The Editor of Kids Alive! has lost the plot! Doesn’t he know that Christmas was last week?’ Well, technically it’s still Christmas. You see, Christmas Day is just the first day of Christmas, which actually lasts for 12 days (you’ve heard of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’, right?). So, we actually have until 6 January to celebrate the birth of Jesus. In fact, there’s nothing to stop us from celebrating Jesus beyond 6 January either. When God sent his son to Earth, he didn’t send him for just 12 days, he didn’t even send him for just the duration of his time on our planet. No, God’s gift of Jesus is the gift that

by Justin Reeves

keeps on giving – Jesus is with us for ever! Last year was a very strange year and it looks like the beginning of 2021 will carry on in a similar way. But the Kids Alive! team wants to remind all its readers that no matter how strange things are and however distant from others you need to stay, Jesus is right by your side. You can talk to him any time by praying and you can seek his advice by reading the Bible. Remember, God loves you! In fact he loves you so much that he sent his son to Earth to show you the best way to live your life and to build a friendship with you, so that one day you can live with him in Heaven for ever.

Potential Prayers Use this space to write a list of things that you’re looking forward to in 2021. Alternatively you could write a list of promises or resolutions you’d like to keep during the year ahead. Keep your list somewhere you’ll see it and use it as a reminder to pray. Ask Jesus to be with you in everything you’re looking forward to or to help you to keep your promises.

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use this space to write a prayer. You can thank God for your day, share any concerns or pray for anyone who is unwell.

Mark 1:29–45 Jesus had had a very busy day. Many people who were sick came to him and he healed each one. But the next day, early in the morning, before anyone else had woken up, Jesus went to a quiet, lonely place and prayed. Spending time with God was very important to him. If you’re a KA! JAM member, check out your KAPAC 4 to read the full story or sign up below to start your KA! JAM journey

KA! JAM is the cooles t Bible activity club around. As a mem ber you’ll go on amazing adventures through the Bible learning about Jesus. Each activity sheet is filled with lo ts of great stuff about being a Christia n. You’ll also receive our mini-mag , Chatterbox, which is filled with jo kes, games and much more. Get Active Do you ever find that you feel much better after getting some fresh air? Experts are always saying that being active, especially outdoors, is great for our mental well-being. So making sure you’re active in some way every day is a great resolution that will help you to feel better physically and mentally!

Be More Helpful Are your parents or guardians often rushing around trying to get things sorted for you and your siblings? Perhaps you could make a resolution to be more helpful this year. Keeping your room tidy or doing your homework without being asked would help a lot. You could also try to be more helpful to friends and other family members too.

A New Hobby Lots of people like to take up new hobbies at the beginning of the year. Does that appeal to you? You could try skateboarding if you’ve never done it before, or try to draw one sketch every week to be more artistic. Or how about developing your cooking skills so you can help with preparing meals at home? That’s a double resolution as it’s helping others too!

12 KA - p12-13 - 2 January.indd 1

18/12/2020 15:38

Go Green Do you recycle? What about walking to places when you can rather than being driven? Or how about making sure you turn off electrical appliances when you’re not using them? These are all ways we can help to take care of our planet and there’s always more we can do. Eating less meat, reducing how much plastic you use and turning off the tap while you’re brushing your teeth are all resolutions that can make a difference.

Believe In Yourself

Lots of us struggle with confidence. It’s easy to be down on ourselves and think we’re not good enough even though we’re great. If you’d like to believe in yourself more, maybe 2021 is the year to make a resolution to do just that!

Limit Screen Time We all know how great technology is, but using screens, such as TVs, phones and tablets too much isn’t very good for us. If you find you and your family spend a lot of time using technology, why don’t you try to cut back this year? You don’t have to give up all your tech completely, but how about phone-free Fridays? Or you could try to have one weekend a month where you avoid using screens.

Read All About It Reading books isn’t just fun, it helps us to learn about other people, cultures and places. It’s also great for improving vocabulary! So a good resolution might be to set yourself a target for how many new books you want to read this year. Or how about making an effort to read more books with diverse characters, such as those with different races or religions to your own?

Spend More Time With God

Living a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring

There’s no better resolutionmental to make inand 2021 than making well-being. sure your for your physical, spiritual relationship with God is the best it can be. So, this year why don’t you try to pray every night before bed? Or read your Bible three times a week? You could also make an effort to tell more people about how awesome it is to be a Christian.

We hope you have fun planning a fab 2021! KA - p12-13 - 2 January.indd 2

Last year was different as I was not able to march on parade with my Beavers. I painted pebbles with my school and we placed them at the cenotaph with school. In the two minutes’ silence we prayed for all the soldiers who lost their lives and for the soldiers currently in service. We decorated our front windows with poppies and observed the two minutes’ silence at home. We mark Remembrance Day in memory of our great-grandparents who served in the war.
