id you enjoy watching the thrilling action at the Olympics? Well, the sporting excitement isn’t over – the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic flame was lit in the Olympic Stadium this week and some Paralympians have already won gold, silver or bronze medals! During the Games, more than 4,000 world-class athletes are competing in 539 events across 22 sports, including athletics, equestrian, swimming, wheelchair basketball, fencing, rugby, shooting and much more. Two new sports have been added to the programme for Tokyo 2020 – Para badminton and Para taekwondo. Watch out for our Paralympics GB stars! Britain’s Para swimmers won an awesome total of 47 medals five years ago at the 2016 Paralympics. Silver medal-winners Thomas Hamer and Scott Quin and multiple gold-medallists Bethany Firth, Stephanie Millward and Hannah Russell hopefully will add to their medal tallies in the swimming pool. Another medal hopeful is 20-year-old sprinter Thomas Young from Loughborough, Watch the Tokyo who won silver at the 2019 World 2020 Paralympics Championships. Boccia is an indoor on Channel 4 Paralympic sport similar to bowls and Britain’s David Smith – with two Paralympic gold medals – is the current world champion. Whatever your favourite sport or whoever you’re cheering for, the talented Paralympians competing at this year’s Games will be sure to inspire you with their skill, determination and courage!

I love Channel 4’s trailer for the Tokyo Paralympics! It gives a little insight into what Paralympians go through to prepare for the Games. Towards the end of the ad a strapline appears saying: ‘To be a Paralympian there’s got to be something wrong with you’. It reminded me of the Bible story when people grumbled about Jesus hanging out with sinners (Matthew 9:9–13). Jesus told the grumblers that sinners were exactly the people he’d come to save. It’s like he was saying, ‘To be a Christian there’s got to be something wrong with you’. Of course, Jesus knows that no one is perfect, which means he actually came to save all of us – grumblers included. That’s great news for me and it’s great news for you. Jesus loves us in spite of our faults and mistakes and wants to help us be the best people we can be.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW SPECIAL YOU ARE TO JESUS

Grown-ups, Grow Down!

D

o you want to hear something really cool? Jesus thinks you’re fantastic and wants you in his Kingdom! Even cooler than that – he wants grown-ups to be more like you! I’m a dad and being a dad is great! When my son, William was younger, I got to play with all sorts of fun toys. Back then, we would play together with Hobbit toys, Transformers and Skylanders Giants. Now, I’m a grown man and Will is a teenager, so if we sat around playing with Transformers or ran through the park pretending to be Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf, we’d get some funny looks! But when Will was a child and we played Transformers or Skylanders Giants together it was totally fine for me to act like a kid! What am I trying to get at? Jesus wants grownups to come to him as the children did in the Bible. The children were really excited to see him and just wanted to spend time with him and be blessed by him. It was a big thing for them to meet Jesus. Imagine how excited you’d be if you got to meet your favourite footballer or pop star. Before you got to them you might have to get through their heavies or minders. It was a little bit like that for the children in this week’s Bible story – Jesus’ ‘heavies’ (the disciples) tried to stop them, but Jesus told the disciples to let the children meet him. Jesus is greater than any footballer or pop star, yet he wants you to come to him. He thinks so much of you that he wants to spend time with you. Not only that, but he also wants grown-ups to copy your attitude towards him. Now that’s really cool!

1890s

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… One of the biggest bicycle crazes in Europe and America happened in the 1890s. That’s because a new bicycle with two small wheels powered by a chain and gears was invented. It replaced the old penny-farthing bicycle, which had one huge wheel at the front and a tiny wheel at the back. In the winter of 1895, William Morgan invented the game of volleyball in Holyoke, Massachusetts in the USA! Originally called Mintonette, the new game was played indoors with any number of players hitting a ball back and forth over a net.

The first modern Olympic Games took place in Athens, Greece, in 1896. They were inspired by the ancient Olympic Games held between the eighth century BC and the fourth century AD in Olympia in Greece. The ancient games included athletics, wrestling, boxing, and horse and chariot races.

7 KA - p7 - 28 August.indd 1

20/08/2021 15:36

Why did the little boy take his bicycle to bed with him? Because he didn’t want to walk in his sleep! Why can’t skeletons lift weights? Because they’re all bones and no muscles!

Why do rugby fans eat up the sport? Because it’s scrum-ptious!

Ho ho, ha ha, he he!

He he, he he!

What kind of horse is good at swimming? A seahorse!

ummer has nearly ended but that doesn’t mean the opportunity to be outdoors and explore the natural world is over. There is still plenty of daylight at the end of each day plus weekends to discover wildlife in gardens, hills, woods and ponds! If you’d like to learn more about the UK’s awesome animals, flowers and plants, why not enter this week’s competition? There’s an opportunity to win Wild Child: A Journey Through Nature – a brilliant book by 17-year-old award-winning conservationist and author, Dara McAnulty. Discover fantastic facts about native creatures and plants, including migration and metamorphosis. Each section has an activity to do at home, such as planting wild flowers, making a bird feeder, trying pond dipping and building a vivarium (a small enclosure for raising animals or plants). There’s also advice for young conservationists and instructions on how to follow the countryside code when you’re out and about. For your opportunity to win a copy of Wild Child: A Journey Through Nature answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 17 September when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Wild Child Competition’ in the subject box. Positive Power It might seem like going back to school is a sad time, but it doesn’t have to be. There are loads of good things to look forward to as well – hanging out with your mates, learning cool stuff, getting new stationery and taking part in clubs and groups again. Think positively! Learning is a wonderful thing – a really clever man once said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world!’ That man was Nelson Mandela and we think he’s definitely right!

The Big B We know that lots of readers worry about bullying. Unfortunately it does happen at school, but that doesn’t mean it’ll definitely happen to you. Even if it does, there are ways to stop it. Your first move should be to talk to a teacher and your parents or carers. They can’t help if they don’t know anything about it. Remember, being bullied doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. It’s not your fault – it can happen to anyone, even awesome people such as David Beckham and Barack Obama were bullied once!
