The Donkey ’s Tale

Celebrating Palm Sunday H

‘

ee-haw! I’m tired. I’ve had such an exhausting day. Do you know what happened? There I was, standing in my field, minding my own business when all of a sudden two men came and took me and my little-un away. I didn’t want to go. Well, I was happily enjoying my day. Would you want to be disturbed? ‘If you think that’s bad, my day got worse. The men started putting cloaks over my back and told one of their friends to climb on – how rude! They could have at least asked my permission first! So off I was made to trudge slowly towards Jerusalem – I tried to take a detour a couple of times but the men were having none of it! Humph! ‘Anyway, we entered Jerusalem and I couldn’t believe my eyes! I’ve never seen so many people in one place. They were waving palm leaves around and shouting. They even laid cloaks on the floor for me to walk on – they must have thought I was a really important donkey! ‘I soon realised my mistake. The crowd seemed to be shouting the name of some guy called Jesus and my name’s Daniel! I tell you what, though, whoever that Jesus was, he must be pretty special because the crowd really loved him. What an atmosphere! What a day! I’ll never forget it, that’s for sure!’

of prints hidden There’s a donkey’s ho week’s comic. on every page of this all! See if you can find them

Are you someone who goes along with the crowd? For example, you’re not that fussed about going to the school disco but all your friends are going, so you decide to go too.

Illustrated by Philippa Martin

I can’t help thinking there were people who went along with the crowd on the first Palm Sunday. They saw a bunch of people cheering for a king and joined in. In a similar way, it’s easy to be a Palm Sunday Christian – to join in at church just because that’s what everyone else is doing. Being a Christian is about more than just joining in for the sake of it or because it makes you feel good. To be a Christian is to be like Jesus. And what did Jesus do on that first Palm Sunday? Well, he didn’t join in. In fact, he stood out from the crowd as someone special, someone different! Are you ready to do the same?

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT JESUS COMING AS A KING

Worship Fit for a King! by Melita Day-Lewis

H

ave you ever watched the Queen’s Birthday Parade on TV? It’s called Trooping the Colour and it’s a real spectacle, with uniformed soldiers, mounted horses, carriages, bands and thousands of people cheering the Queen as she passes by. In this week’s Bible cartoon we see a different kind of ‘parade’. Jesus has become famous because of all the miracles he’s done. He rides into Jerusalem on a donkey and a huge crowd gathers to cheer him on. There are no fancy costumes or expensive props, but there’s lots of excitement, joy and celebration. People treat Jesus like a king in a royal procession – they lay out cloaks to make a carpet, wave palm branches and shout praises to him!

More than 500 years before Jesus was born, a man called Zechariah wrote about this special day – that Jesus would ride into Jerusalem on a donkey like a king (check out Zechariah 9:9). In fact, Jesus is called ‘King of kings’ in the Bible. He’s given this title because he is awesome, all-powerful and rules over Heaven and Earth. More than 2,000 years ago, most people didn’t understand that Jesus was a heavenly king, but they knew that he was special – and they wanted to worship him any way they could. Let’s also give Jesus worship that’s fit for a king! We can do that by telling him how amazing he is, thanking him for all the good things he’s done in our lives and doing our best to live the way he wants us to live.

Palm Sunday Puzzle Read Matthew 21:1–11 and fill in the correct words in the grid using the clues below. The letters in the shaded column will reveal a word the crowds shouted for Jesus. 1 What did the people cut down from the trees? (v8) 2 Who answered, ‘This is Jesus the prophet from Nazareth?’ (v11) 3 Which city did Jesus enter? (v10) 4 What did the crowds spread on the road? (v8) 5 Who would come ‘gentle and riding on a donkey’? ‘Your _ _ _ _ .’ (v5) 6 What did Jesus ride along the road to Jerusalem? (v7) 7 Where did the crowds spread their cloaks? (v8)

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. You can praise Jesus for being a great example and wonderful friend to us and for caring deeply about the poor.

Mark 11:1–11; 15–19

As Jesus approached Jerusalem, he sent two disciples ahead to bring back a colt that had never been ridden before. Jesus rode it into Jerusalem and a crowd gathered around spreading their cloaks on the road, waving branches and shouting praises. ‘Hosanna!’ ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ The next day in the Temple courts, Jesus saw dishonest money-changers and Temple traders cheating the poor. He turned their tables over and reminded the crowd that the Temple was a place for prayer.

The Royal Air Force delivered cats by parachute to a remote village in Borneo! Operation Cat Drop took place around 1960 to stop a plague of rats in Sarawak. The area had been sprayed with a pesticide to kill mosquitos, but when house cats ate contaminated lizards they died. With no cats to hunt them, the rat population grew and grew. To help the village, about 30 cats were placed in cat baskets, flown out of Singapore and parachuted into the village. According to records, all the cats arrived safely!

hat do you see when you look up at the sky? It may seem like a big, empty space, but it’s busier than you think. From clouds and stars to birds and planes and everything in between – there’s a whole universe to explore. But where to start? Skygazing is a double-sided book full of incredible information, fun activities and beautifully-illustrated scenes to enjoy. Discover why the sky is blue, learn about early experiments in flight and find out how helicopters stay aloft. Then flip the book to read about the night sky, including how to read the stars, spot the night’s flying creatures and see the colours of the aurora borealis (also known as the Northern Lights). For your opportunity to win a copy of Skygazing, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 23 April when the winners will be chosen – remember to put ‘Skygazing Book Competition’ in the subject box. What You Need • A4 card • A4 card in two other colours • Pencil • Scissors • Ruler • A grown-up to help

2

What To Do

1

Draw a palm leaf shape on to your card. Make sure the leaf fills the A4 page and cut it out.

2

Draw six lines vertically down the length of the palm leaf – each one about 15mm apart. Then ask a grown-up to help you cut along each line – don’t cut all the way to the edge of the leaf.

3

Cut out 15mm-wide strips from two other colours of A4 card. Make sure they’re wider than the width of your leaf.

4

Weave each strip of card through the slits of the palm leaf. Go forwards and backwards like a weave pattern – alternating between starting at the back and the front.

5

Trim the ends of the strips so they’re not too long.

6

Wave those palm leaves to celebrate the day Jesus entered Jerusalem!

Five Senses Spring The best way to spot the signs of spring is going for a walk. While you’re out, use your senses to explore, and grab a notebook to create a spring scrapbook – make notes, take pictures or draw the flowers you see to remind you of your adventures!

See

How many different types of spring flower can you see? Daffodils, tulips and hyacinths are three that pop up in lots of outdoor spaces.

Smell

Take a big sniff. What can you smell? Freshly cut grass, laundry drying on someone’s washing line or maybe some blossom on a tree.

Taste

Take some healthy snacks so you can stop for a break and taste something delicious while you admire the nature around you.

Listen

Stop and listen – can you hear any birdsong? Robins and wrens are often heard at this time of year, especially early in the morning.

Touch

Reach out and touch the new leaves that are growing on the trees and making everything greener. Or feel the warm sun on your face.
