Recently I was able to show my daughters the church I went to when I was a kid. One of my daughters asked, ‘Are all churches Salvation Army churches?’ So we had a chat about how churches come in all shapes and sizes, which include lots of different types of people who follow and worship Jesus in different ways. Then my daughter said, ‘I think our church is the best church in the world … because we do fun activities for kids and we help people!’ I don’t know what you think of church or if you’ve ever given church a try. Even if you normally go to church regularly, it might be a long time since you’ve been. Whether you think of yourself as a Christian or a churchgoer or not, I’d encourage you to head to church soon. You never know, you might enjoy it and it could change your life.

Time to Make a Good Start
H
ave you ever heard someone say ‘they’re all talk and no trousers’ or ‘they’re all mouth and no action’? They’re usually referring to someone who talks about the wonderful things they’re going to do, or how good they are at doing something, but when it comes to taking action they do nothing or aren’t as good as they suggested. You’ve probably come across people who go on about how good they are at footy, but when they take to the pitch all the skills they were shouting about just seem to disappear. Then there are people who make all sorts of promises and never keep them. In this week’s cartoon Bible story we see two characters. The first guy talks a good game, but
says Justin Reeves
somehow misses the opportunity to help people who clearly need a hand. The second fella says very little but quietly gets on with doing something to help. Which person would you prefer to know? Which one would you prefer to be like? We all know the world’s climate is in a bit of a mess, we’re aware of what the problems are and there’s a lot of talk about what we could do to help make it better. The thing is, at some point, the knowledge and the talking need to turn into actually doing something. What could you do to help make the world a better place? You don’t have to take on the whole challenge by yourself but, like the second fella in the cartoon opposite, you could find a way to make a good start.
Action Plan
Use this space to write a list of things you will do to make a good start to fixing the world we live in. If you’ve ever tried mind mapping at school, why not use this space to draw a mind map? Start by drawing something that represents the problem in the middle, then draw other pictures that are linked to the solution around the outside.

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… The thing you should want most is God’s kingdom and doing what God wants. Then all these other things you need will be given to you. Matthew 6:33 (International Children’s Bible)

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… From 12 March to 5 April 1930, Mahatma Gandhi and 78 volunteers marched 240 miles through India to protest against the British government’s tax on salt in the country. Gandhi was famous for leading the non-violent civil disobedience movement against British rule in India, which helped bring independence to the nation.
The first FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay in July 1930. Uruguay was chosen as the host nation because the national football team had won gold for the second time at the 1928 Olympics. Thirteen teams entered the competition and Uruguay defeated Argentina in the final, winning 4–2. The Nazi and the Soviet Union invasion of Poland in 1939 triggered the beginning of the Second World War. When Germany, which had formed a pact with the Soviet Union, invaded Poland on 1 September, the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany. The war eventually involved most of the world’s countries and lasted from 1939 to 1945.

The Lord’s Prayer Maze
Even though we’re marking Back to Church Sunday this week, you don’t have to be in a church building to learn more about the Bible, talk to God or think about the way Jesus wants you to live – you can do those things anywhere. That’s why Kids Alive! includes articles and cartoons that we hope will help you learn about Jesus. So, this week we thought we would feature a version of a special prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to help them when they prayed. You can use it too by making your way through the maze below and using parts of the Lord’s Prayer to think of things to pray for. Write your own prayer thoughts in the spaces provided. Help us to keep your name special.
Our Father in Heaven
May your kingdom come so that the things you want will happen here on Earth, just like in Heaven.
Give us enough food for each day. Forgive us for the things we have done wrong and help us to forgive people who have been unkind and hurtful to us.
Give us the strength to stay away from things that aren’t good for us and protect us from things that will hurt us. The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours for ever. Amen.

Mind Matters Keeping your mind healthy isn’t just about being clever, it’s also about trying to get help if you’re stressed or feeling sad or angry. School can be pretty stressful at times, especially if you’re starting a new one. Too much stress is not good for your brain, so if you’re feeling stressed out, make sure you get plenty of rest. Exercising is also great for relieving stress! It’s also a really good idea to talk to people if you’re feeling stressed, sad or angry. Talking things through usually helps people feel much better and helps them to clear their minds.
