Have you ever wondered what it would be like if robots tried to take over the world? Well that thought comes true for Katie Mitchell and her family in The Mitchells vs The Machines. It all starts when Katie is accepted into the film school of her dreams and is eager to leave home and find ‘her people’. However, her plan to fly out of her old life and into her new one is scuppered when her nature-loving dad insists on the whole family driving to her new school so they can bond during one last totally-not-awkward-or-forced road trip. The trip isn’t the greatest success and just when Katie doesn’t think it can get any worse the family suddenly finds itself in a robot uprising! The digital operating system and personal assistant, PAL, is hurt after being rejected by its creator, and now it’s out for revenge. Everything from smartphones to Furbys is employed to capture every human on Earth and send them into space. If you had to save the world, what would you do – call in the military, gather a team of highly-skilled experts? I know what I’d do – PANIC!!! When God realised the world needed saving, he didn’t panic. He came up with a plan that started with his son, Jesus, coming to Earth as a baby. Jesus grew up to become a great teacher who showed people the best way to live, died to take the punishment for the things we do wrong and was raised from the dead to show that we could live with him in Heaven for ever. No military, no team of highly-skilled experts, but one man who called lots of ordinary people to help him and inspired them to love him, love others and live his way too. I hope you’ve accepted Jesus as your saviour and friend. If not, don’t panic – you can do it today.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT HOW PUTTING JESUS FIRST HELPS TO EASE YOUR WORRIES
Put Jesus First
W
says Justin Reeves
hat do you worry about? When I was younger I worried about how I looked and being liked by others. I’d get anxious about going to school, homework and doing tests. At the weekends I’d fret about whether my football team would win. It’s hard not to worry, but in the Bible we read that Jesus says we shouldn’t – especially about clothes or having enough food or drink. Jesus isn’t saying you shouldn’t be concerned about those things or that you shouldn’t do something to make sure you and others have them – you just shouldn’t worry about them. You see, the trouble with just worrying about things is that it often stops people from doing something
about stuff that’s bothering them. What I find is that when I face up to my worries or get some help, they’re never as bad as I thought they would be. Something that really helps me is turning my worries into prayers. After speaking to Jesus about things that are making me feel anxious or sad, I always feel better. Somehow it helps me to get my thoughts and feelings into order and I feel better prepared for the things I have to face. The really important thing about this week’s Bible story is to do your best to put Jesus first. Putting him at the centre of everything we do and trying our hardest to live his way helps us to make good choices and deal with life’s problems as they come along.
Prayer Space Turn your worries into prayers – use this space to write down or draw the things you’re worried about and ask Jesus to help you with them.

Praying with Jesus
with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku
NOW YOU PRAY
Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.
Use the space to write a prayer. You can thank God for your day, share any concerns or pray for help to be a caring and honest Christian.
Acts 4:32–37 and 5:1–11
The believers were working together as one big family – selling their property and sharing the money with the apostles to help others in need. However, Ananias and Sapphira sold their property and made a plan to keep some of the money for themselves. When Peter questioned them about it they lied and said they were donating all of the money. Sadly, as soon as they lied they both died*. When the believers heard what had happened they developed a healthy respect for God.

The cheese casu marzu is made using maggots! Casu marzu means ‘rotten cheese’ and is a traditional delicacy in Sardinia, Italy. The cheese is left out so that flies can lay their eggs inside it. The larvae hatch from the eggs and eat the cheese, which produces enzymes that start to decompose it. This super soft cheese with a sharp, burning taste is banned by the European Union, but Sardinians think it’s delicious!

Big Pressures There are lots of different pressures facing children, and many of them are things that your parents or grandparents didn’t have to deal with. Children nowadays live in a much more digital world and while that can be fantastic, there are lots of worries or dangers that can come with it. Many children also have less access to nature and increasing pressures at school. On top of that, the last year has been extra difficult for many people because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Sadly, because of pressures like those mentioned in the previous box, many children are experiencing mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. So taking care of children is just as important as ever.
Good Life Goals Sometimes people refer to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which is a complicated phrase that tries to describe what children need to be happy. You could think of these as ‘good life goals’ and they include things such as not experiencing poverty or hunger, having a quality education, access to clean water, and good health and wellbeing. These are things that the United Nations believe children all around the world have a right to.

Share Your Voice No matter how young you are, you have a voice and the organisers of National Children’s Day want to hear from you! They’re inviting children and young people to think about what they have learnt over the past year and what steps we can all make to create a kinder world. So get creative and produce a blog, poster, painting, comic, poem, song, play or podcast – anything you like! Then ask your parents or guardians to share it with The Children’s Voice through their website, thechildrensvoice.net. You could even get your whole class involved – speak to your teacher about producing something together.
Celebration of Childhood There are lots of other ways to celebrate National Children’s Day too. Here are some ideas to get you started.

You could go camping, even if it’s just in your back garden, go for a walk in the woods, plan a nature scavenger hunt, visit a beach, see some animals at a farm or go for a picnic.

Keep On Moving
14
Sisters Petra (age 11) and Thora (age 8) organised a ‘move-a-thon’ and raised almost £1,700 to help The Salvation Army support vulnerable people. Petra and Thora challenged themselves and their schoolfriends to exercise for as long and as vigorously as they could. From jumping, skipping and running on the spot, to dancing and practising gymnastics, the girls got creative and motivated each other to keep going. Thora managed to move for 1 hour and 50 minutes, while Petra managed 2 hours and 26 minutes. The siblings were inspired to do the challenge after visiting Ripon Salvation Army at Christmas to see how the church and charity was helping families who’d experienced a difficult year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ripon Salvation Army’s Christmas Appeal gave gifts to 200 families and although Petra and Thora donated to the appeal, they wanted to do more to help struggling families. As Petra said, ‘We learn about Jesus at school but in all the stories he’s doing something – healing the ill, helping the poor or the lonely. We’d always thought we can’t heal the sick or anything like that but we could do something.’ And Thora added, ‘I’d say to anyone doing something like this, you’re going to make a real difference to people’s lives; you can change people’s lives’.
