Food, glorious food … warm apple cake and custard! I know those aren’t the words of the song, but I can’t stop thinking of the yummy dessert I ate yesterday. It was delicious! What’s really cool is that our apple cake was home-made, using apples grown in our garden. What I find amazing is that we do absolutely nothing to encourage the apples on our tree to grow, yet every year we get a bumper harvest! Now, I don’t want to take anything away from the hard work farmers do, but every time some wheat, sugar beet, potatoes, apples, sprouts (yes, even sprouts!) or any kind of food grows, a miracle has taken place. Of course, farmers work hard to sow the seed and reap the harvest, but God sends the sunshine and rain that make the crops grow. Thank you, God, for the harvest and the miracle of food, glorious food!

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT REMEMBERING TO INCLUDE JESUS IN EVERYTHING YOU DO

Include Jesus in All You Do

I

sn’t it amazing that Jesus, the Son of God, wants to spend time with each of us? With all the billions of people in the world, God has time to listen to us when we talk to him. Because of that he wants us to really focus on our relationship with him and give it the time it needs. That doesn’t mean that Jesus doesn’t want us to enjoy ourselves or do normal everyday things such as going to school, tidying our bedrooms or playing with our friends. It does mean that we need to set aside special time to concentrate fully on talking to him. Making time to be with Jesus by reading the Bible, talking to him through prayer and spending

says Hannah Kingston

time with other Christians are really important. But it’s just as important to include Jesus in everyday things we do as well. You can make him a part of your life by talking to him as you walk to school. While you’re playing at home you could thank him for all the cool toys you have. You could simply be mindful of him and the way he wants you to live as you spend time with friends or family. You might have your own ideas about how you include Jesus in your everyday lives. So remember – you can spend time with God by concentrating fully on him and by including him in all parts of your life and talking to him as much as possible.

Walk the Talk

This week, Hannah encourages you to include Jesus in every part of your life. Below is a cool bit of the Bible that talks about the same thing, but some of the words are missing. Write the coloured words listed into the correct spaces to complete the Bible passage.

So here’s what I want _ _ _ to do, _ _ _ helping you: Take _ _ _ _ everyday, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ life – your sleeping, _ _ _ _ _ _ , going-to-work, and _ _ _ _ _ _ _ -around life – and _ _ _ _ _ it before God as _ _ offering. Romans 12:1 (The Message) you

Living Like Jesus – Loving Your Neighbour Written by KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku – illustrated by Steve English

Did you know that the most important commandments in the Bible are to love God and to love your neighbour? Jesus was great at doing this, so let’s follow his example by loving God and our neighbours too.

Jesus Blesses the Children

Some people took their children to Jesus so that he could bless them. However, Jesus’ disciples stopped them. When Jesus saw this he was annoyed and told the disciples, ‘Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them because the Kingdom of God belongs to people like them. The truth is, unless people accept God’s Kingdom like a little child accepts things – they will never enter it.’ Then he took the children into his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

Living Like Jesus

Jesus valued spending time with everyone, especially those who others thought weren’t important. To Jesus children were special because they had an ability to trust easily and he didn’t want the children to be prevented from trusting in God’s love for them.

Loving Your Neighbour

Do your friends have a faith? Do they know who Jesus is? Why not talk to them about him sometime? You never know – they might decide to become friends with Jesus too!

About 300 years ago Europeans were afraid to eat tomatoes! Tomatoes were originally grown as ornamental plants, but in the 1700s wealthy aristocrats began to eat them. Some died after eating the tomatoes so people thought the fruit was poisonous and gave it the nickname ‘poison apple’. In fact, the pewter plates on which the tomatoes were served were to blame! The acidity from the tomatoes brought out the lead in the pewter and it was the lead that killed people.

Make No Bake Apple Doughnuts British Food Fortnight begins today. To help you celebrate, here’s a scrummy, crunchy, no bake recipe using one of the nation’s favourite fruits of the season!

What you need

1

2

1 2

3 4 5 6 7

• 3 red or green apples • 500ml of water • Juice of 1 lemon • 125ml of smooth peanut butter (or a nut-free alternative, such as toasted soya spread) • 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder • Toppings, such as rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, granola, seeds or chopped nuts • Knife • Spoon or spatula • Large flat-bottomed dish or container • Paper towel • Small bowl • Large cutting board or breadboard • Grown-up to help

3

What to do

4

Mix it up!

Ask a grown-up to help you cut the apples into 1cm thick slices and cut small circles out in the middle of each apple slice. There’s no need to peel the apples. Pour the water and lemon juice into a flat-bottomed dish or container and soak the apple rings in the mixture for 5–10 minutes. This keeps them from turning brown.

They’re Ready!

Pat the rings dry between sheets of paper towel and place them flat on a cutting board or breadboard.

5

Mix together the peanut butter (or nut-free spread) and cocoa powder in a small bowl, until smooth and well combined. Spread this mixture over the top of your apple slices with a spoon or spatula. Add a thick layer of the toppings of your choice. Enjoy!

Yum, Yum!

Clean Up the World Weekend happens every September and the purpose is to highlight the importance of taking ca re of our planet. This year Cle an Up the World Weekend takes place from 19–20 September an d although clean-up events are havin g to be held differently this year, that do esn’t mean there aren’t lots of ways to get involved. From now until 27 Septemb er it’s also The Great British Septemb er Clean, so there’s no better time to ge t cleaning. Here are a few ways that yo u can clean up the area where you live and help take care of the world at the same time.

Pick up litter in the park Clean up public spaces where you live by picking up rubbish. Make sure you go with your parents or guardians and wear gloves and a face mask.

Walk instead of travelling by car Walk to places such as school and the park as much as possible. This will mean less harmful emissions from vehicles.

11/09/2020 14:57

Coastal Clean Up Believe it or not, there’s another clean up event happening this week too – International Coastal Clean Up Day (19 September) – where the focus is on cleaning up beaches and other coastal areas. Every year thousands of tons of plastic ends up in the sea, which can then hurt or even kill wildlife such as birds, turtles and fish. So cleaning up rubbish from beaches is really important.

Although we don’t all live by the beach, that doesn’t mean we can’t all take care of our coastal areas. Everyone should think about how much plastic we use and throw away, because it’s possible that some of our rubbish will end up in the sea too. By limiting the plastic we use, or reusing plastic items, we can lower the amount of plastic waste.

Recycle Week nce of reducing and We’ve already spoken about the importa ortant part of taking care reusing things, but another really imp k (21–27 September) is of our world is recycling. And this wee gs, instead of throwing Recycle Week. When we recycle thin e new products.
