You can check it out at biblegateway.com I find it impossible to be happy all the time. However, having Jesus as a friend I can talk to about anything really helps me to feel OK – even on bad days. I still get sad, annoyed and worry about stuff, but chatting to Jesus always makes me feel better. Whenever I talk to him I also make sure I share things that I’m happy about and say thanks. You can’t be happy all the time, but I think it’s always possible to find something to be happy about. I hope you find a reason to smile today. READ THE COMMENT ABOUT SHOWING GOD’S LOVE TO OTHERS

Sharing Snacks Shows Sweetness says Alicia Begley

I

have a little boy and I’m trying to teach him about sharing. I love it when he has a snack, such as a breadstick, and he offers me a bite. He shares because he knows me and loves me. Imagine if you had to share your snack with a stranger. What about sharing with 5,000 strangers? I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t be too happy about that! You might recognise the story in the Bible cartoon opposite. Jesus was tired from a busy day. It probably would have been easy to send all the people away so he could just chill! But he decided

Draw This!

to show God’s love to them and care for them. Jesus took something small – some bread and a couple of fish – and turned it into something amazing! Through God’s power, Jesus was able to feed the thousands of people who had gathered to hear him talk. We can show Jesus’ love to people too by caring for them. The Bible says in James 2:17 that if we have faith but don’t do anything with it to help others then it’s nonsense. If we say we love Jesus and want to be his friend, then our actions should match what we say. How can you show God’s love to people you meet? Copy the picture of the loaves and fish (below left) into the empty grid.

Making Progress There has been progress towards achieving gender equality. Women’s rights have improved which has led to greater access to opportunities. More girls are in school, more women are taking up positions of leadership and fewer girls are being forced into early marriage.

Work to be Done

However, there is still work to be done. While there are more women in positions of leadership, they are still outnumbered by men. Women are more likely to be responsible for housework, even if they also work full-time jobs. And women are more affected by climate-change, poverty and gender-based violence. In fact, one in three women around the world will experience violence in their lifetime. As long as such inequalities and injustices exist, we must continue to push for gender justice.

Meet Elena Elena is from Tres Arroyos, Argentina. As an adult, Elena got married and had two children. Though things started well, over time Elena’s husband started to hurt her and he stopped Elena from seeing her friends and family. She said, ‘At first, I didn’t realise he was treating me badly. People would notice the yelling, but I would not acknowledge it. To me that was normal.’ Eventually, Elena’s friends helped her to see that the way she was being treated was wrong. She made the brave decision to leave and reconnected with her family. Elena worked seven days a week to earn enough money to afford to rent her own place. She said, ‘I was working a lot. For months I didn’t take a day off. I wanted to build my life.’ It was during this time that Elena was invited to join the group therapy sessions at The Salvation Army. Elena was encouraged to share her story in a safe and supportive place. In the group, Elena found friendship and the encouragement to keep moving forward. She now tries to support other women who are in similar situations to her. ‘I tell my story to others and try to help.’

1 in 3 Challenge You can take a stand for gender justice by taking on the 1 in 3 Challenge as part of the Helping-Hand Appeal. The money raised will be used to support The Salvation Army’s gender justice projects, like the one Elena is part of in Argentina. This challenge is based on the fact that one in three women around the world will experience violence in their lifetime. The idea is to take those numbers and use them to inspire your very own challenge. Could you cycle 13 miles, run for 13 minutes every day or dance for 13 hours straight? Could you team up with friends to bake and sell 130 cakes? Could you walk 13,000 steps as a family? These are just a few ideas – let your imagination run wild!

Give a Helping-Hand! Ask your parents or carers to set up a Just Giving page for your challenge to keep track of your donations. You can link it to the Helping-Hand 2022 campaign page by visiting justgiving.com/campaign/HelpingHand2022.
