Have you ever heard the saying, ‘Like a fish out of water’? Some people use it to describe someone who feels unhappy because they end up in an unfamiliar situation or surrounded by others who are different to them. Luca and Alberto from the film Luca are sea monsters out of water, but they don’t seem at all unhappy in their new surroundings. In fact, quite the opposite is true – they have a fab time living on dry land. Sometimes, it can be difficult for Christians to do what’s right and behave the way the Bible tells us to behave. Romans 12:2 warns against getting too used to the world we live in, but to stay focused on Jesus and try our hardest to live the way he showed us. No one’s saying you shouldn’t enjoy life, just remember to be loving, patient, kind, generous, fair, understanding and inclusive as you do.

Fantastic Father Figures
T
omorrow (20 June) is Father’s Day – a day to celebrate dads. Dads can be brilliant, which is why so many people believe it’s really important to thank them for everything they do on Father’s Day – and at other times through the year too! However, we realise that not everyone has the best relationship with their dad, or sometimes their dad isn’t around anymore. That can be really tough. Father’s Day doesn’t have to be about dads only, though – it can be about other people in your life who love, encourage and help you too. Sometimes our father figures can be older siblings, cousins,

uncles, teachers, Sunday school leaders, stepfathers or grandparents. In this week’s Bible cartoon we see Paul acting as a father figure to Timothy – he writes to him to encourage him and praise him for the good work he’s doing. There’s one father figure who everyone can rely on. God will always be there for you – all day, every day! He wants all of us to be his children, so that he can care for, teach and guide us through life. Whatever we’re going through he’s the best father figure we could ever need, so he deserves the biggest thanks this Father’s Day!

Praying with Jesus
with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku
NOW YOU PRAY
Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.
Use the space to write a prayer. Pray for Christians around the world who are being treated really badly because of their faith.
Acts 12
King Herod’s soldiers arrested some Christians including James who Herod ordered to be killed. Peter was also arrested and placed under close guard. During the night, as members of the church prayed really hard for Peter, an angel suddenly appeared. He led Peter to safety but Peter thought it was all a dream. Realising he was really truly free, Peter ran to where the believers had gathered. They were astonished to see him and shared the amazing news with the rest of the believers. If you’re a KA! JAM member, check out your KAPAC 32 to read the full story or sign up below to start your KA! JAM journey

Viking men cared a lot about the way they looked! Archaeologists have found loads of beauty tools including razors, tweezers, combs and ear cleaners at Viking sites. Vikings kept their hair well-cut and trimmed their beards. Many of them dyed their hair and beards blonde because they thought it was a very attractive colour. They also bathed once a week (often in those days!), wore colourful, patterned clothes with sewn-on ribbons and used a black, powdery eyeliner made from crushed minerals.

n just five weeks’ time, the eyes of the sports world will be on Japan as athletes can finally compete in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Last summer’s events were delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, but next month the action can begin. Before the opening ceremony happens on Friday 23 July, there’s plenty of time to learn all you can about the history of one of sport’s biggest events using The Story of the Olympic Games. Created in association with the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, this book brings to life the glorious history of the Games of the Olympiad. The book is arranged in chronological order, beginning in 776 BC in ancient Greece, covering the revival of the Games in 1896 and the 27 Games that have followed. The pages are packed with photographs of the action, athletes and artefacts that have defined each Games, so young fans can immerse themselves in the sporting spectacle. For your opportunity to win a copy of The Story of the Olympic Games, answer the question below and email your full name, age, address and answer to kidsalive@salvationarmy.org.uk to reach us by Friday 16 July when the winners will be chosen – remember ‘The Story of the to put ‘Olympic Games Book Competition’ in the Olympic Games’ is subject box. What You Need • Newspaper for the table • An apron to protect your clothes • Smooth pebble. Find one in your garden or buy a bag of pebbles from a craft shop. You can paint a big pebble to use as a doorstop or to decorate the garden, or smaller pebbles to use as paperweights, to give away as gifts or keep as cool ornaments. • Acrylic paints in different colours – we’ve chosen red, black and white for the ladybird • Old plate for holding dollops of paint. • Googly eyes (optional) • Paintbrushes • Jar or mug of water, to clean the paintbrushes
Paint, paint!
What To Do 1
Wash the pebble and allow it to dry completely.
2
Meanwhile, put dollops of white, red and black paint on your plate. Make sure the paints are quite far apart and don’t mix.
3
Paint the pebble white all over – this will help to make the colours more vibrant. Put the paint on quite thickly, without mixing it with water.
4
Wash your paintbrush in water so that it’s completely clean before putting it into another colour.
5
Paint the pebble with red paint. When the paint has dried completely, paint on a second coat.
6
Once that’s dry, paint one end of the rock with black paint for the ladybird’s head, then add a straight line down the centre for the wings and little circles on the body to create ladybird spots. Allow to dry.
7
Finish by painting on a funny face or add googly eyes.
6 Ta-da!

What is Food Insecurity? When a person doesn’t have access to enough food, they are classified as ‘food insecure’. That means they don’t have reliable access to enough safe and nutritious food.
What is a Food Security Project? Around the world, The Salvation Army (which publishes Kids Alive!) supports food security projects which help people to access affordable and nutritious food.
Projects vary from place to place just as the skills, resources and needs vary in each place. Many projects involve training small-scale farmers (that means they own a small plot of land) to adapt to the challenges of climate change and improve their harvests. These are sustainable projects to help ensure families will be ‘food secure’ from generation to generation.
In Burkina Faso, farmers have been learning to make liquid fertiliser from local, natural materials to improve their soil and crops.
In Zimbabwe, the training includes learning about when and how to plant seeds to make the most of the rainy season, and how to use techniques such as mulching.
In Angola, The Salvation Army has supported people to grow avocado trees to produce crops to eat and sell.

Fundraiser Focus Earlier this year, we invited you to take on Challenge 750 to raise money for The Salvation Army’s food security projects around the world. Keira is one of the amazing people who stepped up and took on the challenge! Here’s some information about what Keira got up to.
How did you hear about Challenge 750? I heard about Challenge 750 when I was reading the 24 April edition of Kids Alive!
What ‘750’ challenge did you do?
I decided to give up my phone for 750 hours (just over a month). I chose to doh o,this because technology plays a H o, o! h o, h big part in modern living and I wanted to see if I could go without it … and I could!
Why did you choose to take on the challenge? I wanted to take on the challenge because my dad is a farmer. I wanted to help farmers in other countries and help stop food insecurity.
How did you find living without your phone? I found it hard at times not being able to communicate with friends outside school. I realised how much time I spent on it before. With my free time I was able to spend more time with my family and teach my dog some new tricks. The biggest challenge was resisting the urge to check and reply to any messages I might have received.
Keira has raised more than £450 to support food security projects around the world! Wow! o, Ho h , ha ha ! he he e, H e, h ! e h e, h
Feeling Inspired?
There is still plenty of time for you to get involved in Challenge 750 too! Maybe you could give up your phone like Keira, or perhaps you’d like to do something different. The number 750 is a big number so maybe you could split it up – you could do 75 things a day for 10 days, or share the challenge with friends and family.
Here are a few ideas to inspire you:
Team challenges
Solo challenges
• Bake 750 biscuits • Plant 750 seeds • Run/walk 750 km in a month • Tell 750 jokes
• Skip for 750 seconds • Give up TV for 750 hours • Do a 750-minute sponsored silence • Write a 750-word story
Join the Team Ask your parents or guardians to set up a Just Giving page for your challenge to keep track of your donations. You can also link it to The Salvation Army’s Feeding Hope campaign page by visiting justgiving.com/campaign/FeedingHopeHelpingHand2021.

On Pentecost Sunday, Claire became a senior soldier (a grownup member of The Salvation Army) at Chippenham Salvation Army. Claire first became involved in The Salvation Army after her children Sophie, Becca and Nikki attended Messy Church. In case you haven’t been to Messy Church before, it’s a different way of having church for families and others – it’s for all ages and based on creativity, hospitality and celebration. There’s more information at the following website: messychurch.org.uk. The family enjoyed Messy Church so much that the kids asked to attend Junior Church and wanted their mum to come along on a Sunday too! This photo shows Claire with Becca and Nikki who are both junior soldiers (junior members of The Salvation Army).
Pentecost Party Members of the Kids Club at Darlington Citadel Salvation Army shared in a special Zoom celebration for Pentecost. To celebrate the birthday of the church, craft materials were delivered to the children before the celebration so they could make hats and decorate a birthday cake. There were also experiments with balloons and blow streamers, a dramatic retelling of the story from Acts 2 and party poppers at the end.
