There’s a house hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!

Today (15 May) is International Day of Families – a United Nations day that is celebrated to promote the importance of well-balanced and healthy families around the world. Families come in all shapes and sizes. There can be one or more parents or guardians, no siblings, lots of siblings, step-siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins… All these combinations can be celebrated on International Day of Families. How will you and your family celebrate? You could make a special effort to spend time together – go for a walk or bike ride, do something creative together or tuck into a special meal. While you’re enjoying your meal, each family member could share something they’ve learned from another family member – a story, joke, skill, recipe or dance move – and decide who they can teach next. You could come up with a new family tradition, agree to take a family photo every year, have a family competition or plant some seeds together and watch them grow. As well as celebrating your own family, think about families that are different to yours. What makes them different and is there anything your family could learn from them? Flip to pages 7 to 10 and read about Gudu’s family who run a farm in Zimbabwe. Perhaps you could write a story about what it might be like to run a farm with your family or research what family life is like in Zimbabwe. Check out pages 12 and 13 to read about The Salvation Army’s Helping-Hand Appeal and discover how your family could raise money to help other families, like Gudu’s.

I wonder what family means to you. I could go on about my family for ages: there’s my wife and three children, and my mum, dad, brothers and sisters who I grew up with. I’m lucky enough to have very happy memories of my grandparents. I have a sister who was brought up by another family; 17 nieces and nephews; a mother-in-law, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. And last year I gained a stepmum and two stepbrothers. When I left home, I moved miles away and made friends with a bunch of people who spent so much time together we were like a family. And, of course, there’s my church family. I guess each of us has our own version and definition of family. Whoever you think of as family and whatever family looks like to you, thank God for them and do something special to celebrate your family this week.

here are some things we’re asked to do that we love! ‘Grab your hat, we’re going for a picnic.’ Wahoo! ‘Put on your boots, we’re going to play footie!’ Yay! But there are other things that are tough to do. During the pandemic we’ve been asked to do things we might not really want to – such as social distancing, wearing masks and washing our hands all the time. We’ve also been asked to give up things we love – such as hugging friends and family or having them round for tea. It’s made us sad, but we’ve done it because we know it will help others. God the Father asked Jesus to die on the cross to take the punishment for the wrong things people do that

stop friendship with God and hurt others. This was the most difficult thing Jesus ever had to do. As he prayed to God about it, he cried so hard it was as if his heart was breaking. But eventually, Jesus said to God: ‘I will do what you want, not what I want.’ Jesus’ willingness to obey made a way for us to have an awesome relationship with God! We all have things we want to do. However, God – who knows what’s best for us – wants us to do what he wants. That’s not always easy and sometimes we don’t get it right, but we can trust God – he has an amazing plan and when we say, ‘I will’, he makes a way, using us to help others.

What is Food Security? Food security is when people have access to enough safe and nutritious food so that they can live a healthy and active lifestyle. How do you access food? You probably just go to the fridge or cupboards in your kitchen and find the food that your parents or guardians have bought for your family from the shops. But it’s not that simple for everyone.

To buy food people need money and not everyone has a job or is able to work. Or people need to be able to grow their own food to eat, but that only works if you have certain skills, knowledge and some land to grow crops.

Why is Food Security a Problem? When someone doesn’t have access to enough food they could be classed as having food insecurity. Food insecurity is a growing problem. For decades the number of people without enough access to food has been decreasing, but in recent years the problem has been getting worse again.

In some parts of the world, where lots of people struggle with food security, better access to work opportunities, education and markets is needed. Training projects offered by organisations like The Salvation Army can help. Through its food security programmes around the world, The Salvation Army provides training and confidence building so that individual families can thrive and whole communities can benefit. Some of these training projects include the agricultural one Gudu and Akudzwe attended at thier local Salvation Army – read all about it on pages 7 to 10.

How Can You Help? Now you know a bit about what The Salvation Army does to help food security, you might be wondering how you can help. Well here are a few ideas.

Check out pages 7 to 10 of this week’s issue to read more about Gudu and how The Salvation Army have helped him and his family.

Pray for The Salvation Army’s work in countries like Zimbabwe. Pray that many farmers and their families will get the help they need from the projects offered and that they’ll be able to provide the food needed for their families.

Visit salvationarmy.org.uk/feedinghope to learn more about the Feeding Hope campaign and check out the resources available.

Challenge 750 One big way you could help farmers such as Gudu is raising money for the Helping-Hand Appeal by taking on Challenge 750. Here’s how you can get involved.

Choose Your Challenge 750-Minute Dance-athon or Bake-athon Get sponsored to dance the night away in a living room disco or have a nonstop baking day! You could take part with others and share the experience over Zoom or ask your parents or guardians to live stream your challenge on social media.

750 Miles in a Month Team up with your church, kids club or class to run, walk or skip 750 miles in a month. Each person can take as many miles as they can manage and add their miles to the team total.

750 Hours Without Could you give up your favourite treat for just over a month? Invite friends and family to sponsor you to live without chocolate or TV for 750 hours.

750 Times Could you do 750 star jumps in a certain timeframe? Or plant 750 seeds in your garden? Create your own ‘750’ challenge and raise money to support The Salvation Army’s work tackling food insecurity around the world.

Join the Team Ask your parents or guardians to set up a Just Giving page for your challenge to keep track of your donations. You can also link it to The Salvation Army’s Feeding Hope campaign page by visiting justgiving.com/campaign/FeedingHopeHelpingHand2021.
