Are you thinking of asking for a Yes Day? Be warned! Yes Days come with rules: they have to be earned – chores and homework need to be completed first; you’re not allowed to do anything dangerous or illegal; there’s a budget – you can only spend a set amount of money; activities must take place within 20 miles of home. I know it can feel like grown-ups are boring, old spoilsports when they say no to fun things. But take it from a fun-loving grown-up: when adults say no to stuff, we’re just trying our best to help you enjoy life safely. Some people think that God is a boring, old spoilsport. But I know that’s not true. Remember, God created you and the world you live in. He also loves you and wants you to enjoy the world he gave you – he just wants you to enjoy it safely.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT APPRECIATING YOUR FAMILY

Show the Love!

T

says Melita Day-Lewis

here have been times when my family has driven me crazy. One time my brother threw my favourite toy into the middle of a thorny bush! There were times when my parents wouldn’t buy me something I really wanted. My grandpa would sometimes tease me and my grandma always won when we played cards! There are times when I’ve driven them crazy too! But no matter what, we love each other and will always celebrate the good times and help each other through tough times. That’s family! This week’s Bible cartoon is about the love between Jesus and his mum, Mary. Just imagine what it must have been like to be Jesus’ mum! Her life was full of wonderful, exciting moments and awful,

sad experiences. There were times when she was over the moon – such as the day shepherds came to worship Jesus after he was born. But on the day she saw Jesus suffering on the cross she was very, very sad. Even then, Jesus thought about his mum and asked his friend John to take care of her. Why don’t you take time to think about all the ways your parents, grandparents or guardians show that they love you? For example, cooking meals for you, helping you with homework, looking after you when you’re ill, fixing stuff that’s broken or buying you gifts. Then take some time to show them how much you love and appreciate them – not just on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, but throughout the year!

Praying with Jesus

with KA! JAM Co-ordinator Ibukun Baku

NOW YOU PRAY

Prayers are special because they’re an opportunity to share everything that’s on our minds with Jesus. Prayers have the power to change how we feel by filling us with hope and courage. In the Bible there are loads of examples of prayer changing people’s situations. In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages believers to always pray. Using stories from the Bible when Jesus prayed, we want to encourage you to pray too.

Use the space to write a prayer. You can thank God for how much he loves and cares for you and pray that your friends will develop a friendship with Jesus too.

Mark 9:33–47 and 10:13–16

The disciples were arguing about who was the greatest of them, so Jesus explained that being great meant putting others first. He called over a child and said, ‘Welcoming children in my name means you’re welcoming me and God too.’ Then Jesus warned that anyone who caused a child to stop trusting God would face big consequences. Later, some children came to see Jesus but the disciples stopped them. Jesus was cross! He said children were a part of God’s kingdom and people needed to trust God like they did. Then he blessed the children.

Oil can calm choppy water! Just a tablespoon of oil can calm about 63 square metres of water. Oil absorbs some of the waves’ energy and quickly forms a thin layer over the surface of the water. The oily layer prevents the wind – which whips up waves – from getting traction along the water and this helps stop waves from forming easily. For centuries sailors would throw oil overboard in stormy conditions to help calm the sea. British merchant ships were required to carry ‘storm oil’ up until 1998!

Evidence exists suggesting that the first use of vaccines was in China as early as 1,000 years ago! But vaccinations became more widely known and used after a doctor from Gloucestershire used a sample of cowpox to prevent people living near him from getting smallpox. News spread across Europe and then the world. Within 20 years Edward Jenner’s vaccination technique saved millions of lives and allowed smallpox to be wiped out.

Routine Vaccinations Today In the UK, a smallpox vaccination isn’t needed anymore, but there are lots of diseases where vaccinations are used to prevent a lot of severe illness or death. Vulnerable people, including younger children are invited to have a flu vaccination every autumn and babies as young as eight weeks old receive vaccinations against illnesses such as polio, diphtheria and whooping cough to help keep them safe.

All vaccinations have to go through lots of stages of development and safety checks before they’re allowed to be use d. This includes a lot of medical research and clinical trials. This enables scientists to make sure that vaccinations are safe.
