ost of you probably know the best thing to do in an emergency is to call 999. However, would you know what to do if a friend or family member was choking? What if they got a nasty burn? Broke a bone? Or started bleeding heavily? We’re guessing that for most of you the answer to each of those questions would be ‘No!’ That’s something that the organisers of World First Aid Day want to change. No one’s suggesting you train to become a paramedic, doctor or nurse – those jobs take years of training. But learning a few basic first aid skills could make a huge difference to someone who’s injured. We know life’s busy. There’s homework to keep on top of, clubs to attend, family to catch up with and friends to play with – it can feel like there aren’t enough minutes in the day to do all the things you have and Da vid want to do. But accidents and Pa rry/ e PA Wire pictur emergencies can happen anywhere, any time – at home, on the school run, in the park or in the playground. They’re unpredictable. British Red Cross can help you feel prepared to step in and act in a first aid emergency. So they’re asking people to Da vid take a minute to visit Pa r redcross.org.uk/first-aid and discover more about the variety of ways they can help you learn some vital first aid skills. Can you spare a minute today? It could save a life. ire picture
I don’t know what you do when you’ve hurt yourself, but when I was a kid the first thing I’d do was shout, ‘MUUUM!’ She always knew exactly what to do. When my children hurt themselves the first thing I do is make them calm. Then I try to work out what’s wrong and begin sorting it out. A good clean and a sticking plaster usually does the trick – often a cuddle is just enough. Some things need more than just a sticking plaster or a bit of first aid to sort them out. When I’m worried about something big I chat to my wife, my dad or a friend. I also chat to Jesus about my problems. When I chat to him my worries don’t just magically disappear, but I always feel much calmer knowing he’s helping me to get things sorted – it’s a bit like receiving a big heavenly cuddle.

he other day, I arrived home and noticed a plastic bottle by the kerb outside our house, so I picked it up and put it in our recycling bin. One of my daughters said, ‘Daddy, what are you doing? That’s not our bottle!’ I explained that even though it wasn’t ours it was on our road and I don’t like our road looking scruffy. I asked my daughters to think how our road would look if everybody dropped rubbish. What if everyone decided it wasn’t their job to clean up litter? What would our streets, our towns, our country, our world be like then? What do you think the world would be like? This week’s Bible verses might seem like an odd

choice to link to climate change – we usually think of this bit of the Bible when we’re talking about being kind to others and helping people in need. The thing is, there are people in the world who are really suffering because of climate change and they need our help. They need us to use and throw away less plastic, to be careful what we flush down the toilet or wash away in the sink, and to use less electricity and change the way the electricity we do use is generated. I’m sure you could think of lots more things we could do to change for the better, save our planet and help those who are suffering because of climate change. What could you do to help your neighbours around the world?
Before and After Think of changes you could make to help the environment. Use this space to draw a before and after picture, or write a short story, that shows the difference those changes would make.

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… ‘Yes, God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him would not be lost but have eternal life.’ John 3:16 (Easy-to-Read Version)

Kids Alive! is 140 years old, so let’s take a peek each week at some historic happenings in each decade from 1881 to 2021… On 14 December 1911, a team of five Norwegians – led by polar explorer Roald Amundsen – were the first people to reach the South Pole! They arrived five weeks before a British team led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The Norwegian team set out in mid-October on skis, with four sledges and 52 dogs. Amundsen and his team returned safely to their base. Sadly, Scott and his four companions died on their return journey.
The First World War began on 28 July 1914 and ended more than four years later on Armistice Day, at 11am on 11 November 1918. It was known as the Great War. On 11 November every year, people remember members of the armed forces, emergency services and civilians who have died because of war, and their families. In 1919 the silent animated film, Feline Follies, was released. It introduced Felix the cat, a cartoon character based on Charlie Chaplin. Felix – also known as Master Tom – became one of the most recognised cartoon characters in film history.

Super Snacks and Delicious Drinks How many cakes and biscuits do you snack on every day? Eating sweets such as these is fine sometimes, but eating too many is not good for us. Instead you should swap those snacks for tasty fruits and delicious unsalted nuts. Another problem some people have is drinking too many fizzy drinks. Like cakes and biscuits, fizzy drinks are fine as occasional treats but most of the time you should try to stick to healthier drinks – the healthiest drink is water!

Plymouth’s Park Runners
To help celebrate the 140th anniversary of Kids Alive!, kids from Plymouth Congress Hall Salvation Army raised more than £235 for their church! Ten children completed 140 laps of Victoria Park in Plymouth, along with their parents, grandparents and friends – that’s about 70 miles (110 kilometres). They completed the laps by walking, running, cycling and scooter riding. What a great 140 Challenge! Well done, everyone!
