There’s a cool bit in Clifford the Big Red Dog when Emily Elizabeth says, ‘What if you found someone who made you feel like you could do anything?’ When I heard this, I thought of Philippians 4:13, which says, ‘I can do all things through Christ because he gives me strength’ (International Children’s Bible). Don’t get me wrong, Christ (that’s Jesus) doesn’t give us miraculous superpowers. However, I know that when I accepted Jesus as my friend and saviour my life changed for ever. You could say I found someone who made me feel like I could do anything. That doesn’t mean my life became perfect – I still have worries and things I find tough. But when I share that tough stuff with Jesus, he helps me find the strength to tackle those worries and troubles. I hope you have Jesus in your life and that you feel his love strengthening you too.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT THE PEACE THAT KNOWING JESUS BRINGS
It’ll Be All Right
W
says Justin Reeves
hen I think of peace, the angels visiting the shepherds isn’t the first thing that springs to mind. Sure, they brought a message of peace and goodwill, but it doesn’t sound very peaceful. For a start, the Bible tells us that the shepherds were terrified. Then the sky was filled with angels singing praises to God. I’m sure that sounded wonderful. But peaceful? Probably not. We all have different ideas of peace. For some it’s somewhere quiet where they can chill out. Others feel peaceful when they’re surrounded by friends and family – it might be noisy, but the company of loved ones makes everything seem OK. There are those whose idea of peace is an end to fighting and war. For many people, peace is simply knowing that
everything’s going to be all right. Yes, that noisy night in Bethlehem thousands of years ago might have been terrifying and exciting. However, it seems to me that the shepherds understood that everything they saw and heard meant that everything was going to be all right (and so did their sheep, according to this week’s cartoon Bible story). Actually, this week’s cartoon reminds me of a part of the Bible that you probably wouldn’t think of at Christmastime. Psalm 23 talks about a shepherd (God) who looks after his sheep (you and me) and gives them everything they need. When I read this psalm, I feel peaceful because I know that God is looking after us and one day everything will be all OK.
Muddle Puzzle
These sheep have got into a bit of a muddle. Put the speech bubbles in the correct order to reveal a simplified version of Psalm 23. Here’s a little clue to help you: think of the order the colours appear in the rainbow.

CHECK OUT YOUR BIBLE – LUKE 2:8-20

What’s your favourite Bible verse and do you know it off by heart? If so, do you often repeat it to yourself? Reciting Scripture we’ve memorised is a great way of expressing how we feel – all our joy, hopes and concerns. It’s also a great reminder of God’s promises and enormous love for us. That’s why in Deuteronomy 18:11, we’re encouraged to place God’s word in our ‘hearts and minds’. So have a go at learning the Bible verse below… Then the shepherds went back to their sheep, praising God and thanking him for everything that they had seen and heard. It was just as the angel had told them. Luke 2:20 (International Children’s Bible)

An Historical Christmas Did You Know?
As we make our way through the season of Advent and look forward to Christmas we thought we’d share a few Christmas-related facts that you might not know.
Can you imagine not being allowed to celebrate Christmas? Well in 1643, Parliament banned Christmas in the United Kingdom! Unlike today, shops and businesses were made to stay open, and it was illegal to attend Christmas church services. As you can imagine, this didn’t go down very well with the public, who protested and even rioted. The ban lasted for 17 years. In fact, in Scotland, Christmas was officially illegal until 1957!
Legend has it that the original Grinch – and rather grandly titled Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland – Oliver Cromwell also outlawed mince pies in the 1650s. Strictly speaking that isn’t true – mince pies just got caught up in the general Christmas ban. What is true is that mince pies weren’t always the sweet treats we enjoy today (OK, not everyone enjoys them!). They were originally made with a mixture of lamb or venison and spices, such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg, surrounded by very thick pastry.

The Yule goat in Sweden helps deliver presents, so in 1966 someone came up with the idea of making a giant straw goat, known as the Gävlebocken. It’s more than 42 feet tall and weighs about the same as 35 baby elephants!
Homes in Denmark are decorated with nisser (like little gnomes) because Danish legend says they provide protection. On Christmas Eve, Danish families place their Christmas tree in the middle of the room and dance around it while singing carols.
In Switzerland, people make their own Advent calendars. These calendars are either given to children as a surprise or made together as a fun activity. In some villages there are life-size Advent calendars where people decorate their windows and host parties for the villagers.
In Georgia, Christmas is celebrated on 7 January. A traditional Georgian Christmas tree is called a chichilaki and is made of dried wood shaved into long curly strips to form a tree. They’re decorated with small fruits and sweets, and traditionally burnt later in January.
In the Philippines people like to celebrate Christmas for as long as possible – celebrations start in September! Many people decorate their houses with parols which are bamboo frames with star lanterns made from coloured paper. There are dazzling parades and festivals to show off the beautiful lanterns.
In Colombia people put candles and lights in the windows. Argentinian homes are decorated with lights, wreaths, garlands and colourful Christmas trees. Many South American countries have nativity scenes which are often very large and fancy, and may include local flowers or animals, such as llamas.

The History of the Christmas Tree People have used evergreen trees (trees with leaves that stay green all year round) for winter celebrations for thousands of years – even the Romans and Egyptians had them!
The tradition of bringing a fir tree indoors and decorating it is believed to have started in Germany in the 1500s. The story goes that a German priest called Martin Luther was walking home through the woods and saw brilliant stars twinkling through the tall trees. So he decided to cut down a tree, take it home and decorate it with candles to recreate the scene for his family.
ure
The Christmas song ‘O Christmas Tree’ comes from the German folk song ‘O Tannenbaum’. As fir trees became connected with Christmas, so did this song as a sign of hope in winter.

In the United Kingdom, Christmas trees were made popular by the Royal Family. German-born Queen Charlotte introduced a Christmas tree at a children’s party in 1800. However, it wasn’t until Queen Victoria, and her German husband Prince Albert, posed for a drawing in front of their Christmas tree in 1848 that this tradition became popular here.

Cut off the bottom rectangular strip, so the leftover paper makes a triangle when folded.
Make cuts from one of the open ends to the folded edge about 1cm apart. Don’t cut all the way up, though – leave a space of about a centimetre between the cuts and the fold.
Keep going until both sides are complete, then add your decorations!
