nniversar y of Kids Alive! ting the 140th A Celebra This year is a very special one for Kids Alive! – we’re celebrating our 140th anniversary! That means that our first issue was published as The Little Soldier 140 years ago on 27 August 1881! That’s way back when Queen Victoria was on the throne! Although there have been a few name changes along the way, The Salvation Army has been publishing a children’s comic that whole time. Isn’t that incredible? We think that’s definitely a milestone worth celebrating, so instead of a giant cake and presents (blowing out the candles would take for ever!) to mark the occasion we’re encouraging kids from across the UK (and their loved ones, friends and children’s workers too!) to get involved in a six-week summer challenge to raise money for their local Salvation Army. The aim of the 140 Challenge is to ask people to sponsor you to do 140 things. Starting on 10 July and running until our anniversary issue on 21 August, there will be themed weeks to inspire you with ideas on how to get involved. For more information about this awesome challenge, turn to pages 12 and 13 of this week’s issue. We’ve even got some cool and creative challenge ideas to inspire you! There’s a ‘helping hand’ hidden on every page of this week’s comic. See if you can find them all!
Recently, I got to see the first-ever The Little Soldier from 1881 – that makes it 140 years old! It was so interesting to read stories about children who decided to follow Jesus by becoming ‘Little Soldiers’ in the ‘Little Salvation Army’. The front cover was a news report and illustration that described how members of The Salvation Army in Hull raised money so that they could feed 2,500 poor children. Team KA! had already decided that we would invite people to help us celebrate our anniversary by raising money for children’s work in The Salvation Army. And when I read that report, I just knew this was the right way to mark our anniversary. So now it’s over to you, your friends and family to help us make our 140th anniversary a very special occasion by taking on the Kids Alive! 140 Challenge. What will you do to help us celebrate?

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT FINDING A QUIET TIME AND PLACE TO LISTEN TO GOD
Be Calm and Listen On
W
hat can you hear right now? Are you reading your issue of Kids Alive! on a noisy bus or in a quiet corner of your garden? If someone whispered to you right now would you be able to hear what they’re saying or would your reply be ‘Pardon?’? In this week’s cartoon Bible story Elijah discovers that God can speak through whispers as well as in big, loud shouts. Elijah was angry because he thought God wasn’t helping him during a troubled time in his life. He probably wanted God to do something huge, bold and dramatic to his enemies and solve all his problems. God showed Elijah that he could do those sorts
says Steve English
of things, but that sometimes he could also use quiet moments to speak to him and help him. When he was ready to listen, God gave Elijah some sensible advice and told him that he had everything under control. If we want to listen to what God has to say to us, we sometimes need to be prepared to find a quiet place. It’s often in those quiet moments between the busy times (though earthquakes and raging fires may not apply to you) that God speaks. If we are too busy in our lives or in our minds we’re less likely to hear the same calm voice of God that came to Elijah.
Whispered Words Work out what God is saying to Elijah in a whisper in the middle of the wind, earthquake and fire

Doing 140 things might seem like a big challenge, but as the challenge runs throughout the summer, there will be plenty of time to complete your challenge. You don’t even have to do a challenge alone – fundraisers can take on a group challenge by teaming up with family members or friends at church or school. You can even do things in multiples of 14 if that’s easier – as long as you’re having fun and raising whatever money you can.

I enjoy playing tennis and badminton, but my favourite sports to watch are rugby and rhythmic gymnastics. Favourite bit of Kids Alive! ? Reader profiles, of course! I also love reading the Bible cartoons, because they make the stories in the Bible come alive. Favourite Bible story and why? The stories about Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, who were saved from the lions’ den and the fiery furnace by God when they refused to worship the kings of Babylon. Favourite TV programme? I don’t have a television, but when I did I used to love watching So You Think You Can Dance and The Great British Bake-Off. What do you want to be when you’re older? When I was young, I wanted to be a dancer or an actress. Pets? I don’t have any, but I love cats! I wouldn’t mind having a stick insect as a pet. Hobbies? I love reading books, walking in the countryside, bird-watching and photography. Tell us a joke. What’s green and rides a white horse? Alexander the Grape! What special skill or talent do you have? I’m good at telling back-to-front fairy stories (or stairy fories). For example, ‘At the ball Rindercella danced with a prandsome hince, but when the sock clucked nidmight she ran off and slopped her dripper on the stalace peps! Tell us something interesting about yourself. I love spiders and snakes, which is just as well, as I grew up in South Africa! Is there anything else you would like to tell us? I enjoy travelling to different places, but my favourite country to visit is India.
