What happened to Mr and Mrs Standish?

When One Becomes Two Divorce

and Protecting Pre-Marital Assets

Matrimonial Assets – When couples get married, the law considers any wealth (and property) built up during the marriage to be ‘equal’, and so in the event of a divorce, the starting point is a 50/50 division. But what if the finances are unequal at the start of a marriage, e.g. property owned prior to marriage? Or if couples build up shared wealth using personal funds? Could those assets become ‘matrimonialised’? How does the court decide who keeps what?

The recent case of Standish vs Standish answers some of those questions:

Married for nearly 15 years and with two children, the family always benefited from Mr Standish’s outstanding career as a banker and the fortune of £132 million that came with it. They married only two years before Mr Standish retired, so most of his wealth should have been non-matrimonial.

In 2017, Mr Standish transferred £77m of his personal wealth to Mrs Standish, with the purpose of placing the funds in a trust to the benefit of their children. The trust was never set up, and the funds remained in her account as the divorce proceedings began. At the Final

Hearing, the Court determined the funds had been matrimonialised, had therefore become an asset of the marriage, and awarded Mrs Standish 40% of the couple’s combined wealth (£45m). Both appealed.

The Court of Appeal found in favour of Mr Standish and reduced the amount to Mrs Standish to £25 million.

Mrs Standish appealed again. The Supreme Court reaffirmed that matrimonial assets, no matter who holds the legal title, should be divided in accordance with the sharing principle, and pre-matrimonial wealth does not necessarily need to be taken into

account, provided that the needs for all parties are met.

If you are bringing significant funds into a marriage, it is vital to obtain specialist legal advice beforehand. A Pre-Nuptial Agreement can be an effective tool to protect those assets from matrimonialisation.

Aren’t we the lucky ones? Three heatwaves in quick succession – an unexpected treat for us Brits! Although, as I write this, the current one seems to have faded into the usual drizzle. Still, fingers crossed the sunshine returns just in time for the school holidays (and a bit more alfresco rosé, naturally).

It’s been a whirlwind few weeks here at Glossy HQ. From indulging in the dazzling delights of Sexy Fish Manchester, to exploring the grand elegance of The Municipal Hotel in Liverpool, to savouring the serenity of Pale Hall Country House Hotel in Snowdonia and relaxing at The Manor House Hotel & Spa in Alsager – this issue has blossomed into a full-blown travel special. We've also had our fair share of London adventures, visiting some of the capital’s most luxurious, stays and boutique bliss. If you’re planning an escape, you’ll find plenty of inspiration within these pages. I did promise I’d spend my semi-retirement wisely... just imagine the pace when I’m fully retired!

Beyond travel, there’s lots more to enjoy – whether you're intrigued by the Oasis reunion buzz, need a new book to sink into, or want to read about Day Fever, a daytime dance party giving those of us of a certain age a reason to return home at a decent time – there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss the details of our Glossy Charity Christmas Ball, taking place on 29th November at The Edwardian Manchester. As ever, it will be a night of sparkle, laughter and fabulous outfits – the per fect (early!) start to the festive season. And yes, it seems Christmas now begins in August... so let this be your excuse to plan and treat yourself to something dazzling to wear.

Wherever you find yourself this summer – whether jetting off to far-flung shores, exploring closer to home, or simply enjoying the garden with a chilled glass in hand – I hope this issue brings joy, a few wish-list moments, and a warm reminder of how good life can be when we pause to enjoy it.

Which celebrity fashion pack do you belong to?

If you have a favourite celebrity and love fashion, then you are just going to adore the freshest collabs that are around at the moment.

Celebs, of course, have always walked the runway for their favourite designer, but in recent years, they’ve become even more hands-on when it comes to designing and endorsing collections, and Summer ‘25 is no exception. The great thing is that if you love a famous person, then you can buy into their style. You don’t have to have a fat wallet either to dress like a celeb. While Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s label, The Row, might be the celebrity line to go for if you want a fabulous fashionforward bag for a hefty two grand price tag, £20 will bag you some stylish threads as worn by TV presenter Lisa Snowdon for Bonmarché.

So, which celebrity fashion pack do you belong to? Are you a boho free spirit like Poppy Delevingne, whose limited edition Nobody’s Child x Poppy Delevingne collab is a love letter to vintage glamour, or a style-conscious gym bunny who just loves Khloé Kardashian’s iconic activewear brand Fabletics?

Khloé Kardashian Fabletics – For those who love their activewear both in and out of the gym. Nobody’s Child x Poppy Delevingne – Boho meets glam, perfect for parties and festivals. Lisa Snowdon x Bonmarché – On a budget? Stylish and practical pieces that work for day to night. The Edit by Alexa – For outdoorsy gals who want style and functionality.

Matalan - Little Mistress x Vicky Pattison – affordable fashion collection featuring pretty dresses and cool co-ords.

F&F x Abbey Clancy – an uber cool collection for festival-going fillies

Add a spritz of fragrance from your fave celeb – we love Ariana Grande’s latest fragrance R.E.M Cherry Eclipse - and pack Rihanna’s fabulous Fenty Travel-Size Start'r Set if you’re heading on holiday and you’re good to go!

Now that summer is well and truly here, it’s the perfect time to breathe new life into your home. With longer days and a lighter mood, this season calls for interiors that feel fresh, welcoming and ideal for entertaining. The Cotswold Company’s latest collections do just that—offering beautifully crafted furniture and accessories designed to enhance both aesthetic and practicality throughout the home.

Whether you’re hosting garden -to-table dinners or simply enjoying a slower pace of life, thoughtful furniture choices can transform everyday living. The Cotswold Company excels in pieces that are both functional and timeless —from freestanding larders and kitchen islands in natural wood and painted finishes, to extendable dining tables and comfortable yet stylish chairs. Each design is thoughtfully created to bring warmth and charm to gatherings with family and friends.

Create a Thoughtfully Curated Summer Home with The Cotswold Company

This summer’s colour palette draws inspiration from the natural world, with soft whites, gentle sage greens and warm oak tones taking centre stage. The much-loved Chester collections strike a perfect balance between rustic charm and modern design. Standout pieces such as the generously sized double larder and practical butcher’s block are not only beautiful but built to last, thanks to traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon frames and dovetailed drawers.

Complementing these hero pieces are hand-finished ceramics, rattan accessories and woven storage baskets, adding tactile interest and timeless character to your kitchen.

Versatile storage options such as the Inglesham Whitewash Oak Display Cabinet and Chester Dove Grey Glazed Dresser provide ample space for displaying beloved crockery or storing everyday essentials, making them ideal additions to both kitchen and living areas, especially when preparing to host guests over the sunny months.

Of course, creating a serene bedroom retreat is just as important. Summer is the perfect time to refresh your sleep space with lighter colours, breathable textures and furniture that brings both beauty and order. The Berkeley Nordic Oak bed, with its mid-century inspired details and soft oak finish, is a standout choice for a stylish yet restful bedroom. Pair it with the Camille Limewash Oak 6 Drawer Chest, whose antique French -inspired details and light limewash finish bring a refined softness to the room. Together, they create a tranquil sanctuary perfect for lazy summer mornings or cool eveningescapes.

No space is complete without those personal touches that make a house a home. The Cotswold Company has curated a charming selection of home accessories—from linen cushions and delicately scented candles to nature -inspired vases—each one designed to enhance your home’s character.

In the mood

Ramp up the ambience with home fragrance scented candles, luscious lighting and more

Who doesn’t love the smell of baking in a kitchen, or flowers in the hallway in summer, twinkling lights in a dining room or a lovely squishy cushion? Home is more than just furniture. It’s everything that is mood-enhancing

Linda Pilkington, known for her high-end Ormonde Jayne fragrances and her bijou boutique in Burlington Arcade, London, knows more about fragrance than most. Having started her career making candles 25 years ago (Chanel and Burberry were amongst her first clients), she has now come full circle with her new homewares collection, including scented candles, diffusers and room sprays.

She gets inspiration from a surprising range of sources: it could be from a book, a holiday, a botanical garden, or even something on TV.

“The perfume was so successful, I just thought it would be lovely to reignite the homeware,” she says. “So, I’ve gone back to making candles. But I

Little Greene x Jo Malone candle, £59, jomalone.com

want them to stand alone. I want to let them have their own moment,” And if you’ve ever had problems with your expensive scented candles (I have), you’re not doing it properly.

“In the boutique, they always tell the client how to burn the candle to get the best out of it,” she reveals.“With the very first burn of the candle – not just Ormonde Jane candles, all candles – the first time you light a candle, you have to make sure you’ve lit it long enough for the wax to go to the edge of the glass. Ideally, 1mm from the edge is the perfect burn, and you put it out with the lid to starve the oxygen. When you go to relight it, you want to take off the knobbly bit . Each wick size is different according to the oil in the candle.”

Rechargeable table lamp, £80, arighibianchi.co.uk

Look out too for the new candle collab between the Manchester-based paint manufacturers Little Greene and Jo Malone. This is all about matching a mood with the colours you’d pick for a room. For example, “Citrus can be great for neutralising the air and is very calming,” says Little Greene’s Ruth Mottershead. And…“If you can’t fill your house full of fresh flowers, then light a candle.”

Of course, it’s not just candles that can make a house feel like a home. The soft furnishings and lighting you choose are all important when it comes to creating a bespoke environment for you and your loved ones. It’s all about the little touches that make your home feel so warm and welcoming.

Drama in the Dust

Waking up to over 400 WhatsApp notifications every morning is not exactly the relaxed Andalusian summer I had in mind. With temperatures soaring well into the 30s most days, my only real ambition for the season was to perfect the art of the siesta. Maybe flop in the pool when I’m feeling wild. Instead, I find myself utterly glued to my mobile. And not for anything productive, like booking a cultural tour or checking the forecast (spoiler: it’s scorchio). Oh no – I am completely hooked on what can only be described as the greatest, strangest live reality show never filmed: Los Tablazos Unfiltered.

Two months ago, one of our well-meaning neighbours came up with the bright idea

to start a WhatsApp group for our little Los Tablazos rural community. It began innocently enough – messages about missing cats, power cut alerts and mild outrage about tourists arriving home late at night on noisy scooters. Well, 8pm. The kind of thrilling middle-aged lives we lead here.

Tensions ran high. Testosterone levels ran higher. Especially when Alejandro was spotted in Nerja having breakfast with Jesús’ youngest daughter. Then came the mule.

But then, the reality show started to get a tad more interesting. First came the attempted break-ins on the mountainside. That’s when Alejandro appeared. Local firefighter. 30 years young. Tall, dark, smouldering eyes. The kind of Spanish bombero who could extinguish a fire just by looking at it sternly. He offered to organise night patrols. Within hours, word had spread, and the group had doubled. Suddenly, every woman in a five-mile radius had developed a deep interest in their civic duty. Swiftly followed by their suspicious husbands, who insisted on joining Alejandro’s patrols, “Safety in numbers,” they said. Hmmmm.

Rafael, a third-generation farmer in his 80s, inspired by Alejandro’s success with the younger women, decided it was time for him to impress the lovely widows of the hillside by getting a younger, more energetic mule. What he got was a fourlegged escape artist with zero interest in ploughing. The moment he spotted the harness, he bolted (the mule, not Rafael) – sprinting across fields, through gardens and (famously) straight through someone’s kitchen during breakfast. Search parties were constantly being summoned via WhatsApp at all hours, and on more than one occasion, someone chasing the mule ended up accidentally uncovering one of Alejandro’s ‘secret patrol liaisons’.

And just like that, our quiet hillside was lit up at night like a midsummer rave –flashing torches, walkie-talkies crackling, Jesús stumbling around in military-grade night vision goggles from the ‘70s.

And last week, the Great Paella War broke out. At the local feria (big festival), Antonia and Ana-Maria – two scary grandmothers with lifelong rivalries, apparently born out of Ana-Maria stealing Antonia’s young beau at their school dance – set up competing paella stands. The WhatsApp group became a digital paella battlefield. Accusations flew. Loyalties tested. Someone claimed Antonia used supermarket stock cubes and has not been heard from since.

So, no, I haven’t had the lazy, peaceful summer I’d planned. But I have gained something far more entertaining: a front row seat to the most charming, sun-drenched soap opera in Europe. Right, must dash, I’m pretty sure that’s Rafael’s mule is outside eating my precious roses…

The Woof Guide to Harrogate

Harrogate has many claims to fame. It’s where Agatha Christie retreated to when she mysteriously disappeared for 11 days in 1926, it was the setting for the Eurovision Song Contest in 1982 and has been feted as a spa town with a Royal Pump room (now a museum). But is it good for dogs? Inspired by famed fictional sleuth Miss Marple, I went to investigate…

so much money, he actually took it over (how he became so rich does remain a mystery). Illustrious visitors include Lord Byron, composer Edward Elgar and ‘allegedly’ the Beatles!

It may now only have three stars, but the welcome I received was definitely five-star.

I loved my gift box, which was delivered to our room. ‘Evidence’ soon revealed that it was from local pet store HG Pets and was filled with goodies, including treats, a bone, toy and poo bags. It is probably the best hotel gift box I have ever been given. So, we went over to pay a visit to the owner, Jon, in his shop.

It’s just around the corner from the hotel and crammed with everything a doggy needs. The humans bought me a portable collapsible bowl and chatted a while to the friendly owner. “There are two sorts of dog owners who visit Harrogate,” he confessed. “The ones who have brought their dogs but have forgotten something, and those who haven’t brought their dog and feel guilty about it.”

The walk from Valley Gardens through the Pinewoods takes you to RHS Garden Harlow Carr, where dogs can run about off lead if you turn right and carry on along the road to Birk Crag.

There’s also an area called The Stray, where 200 acres of parkland around the town are an enticing prospect for energetic pooches like me.

A little out of Harrogate is the Bilton area and the gateway to Nidd Gorge, where you can wander over to Knaresborough. So absolutely loads of alfresco opportunities. But after Valley Park, what did the humans do? They took me to Hales, which is Harrogate’s oldest pub, full of great old world-ness and a small beer garden at the back to soak up the sun. Here I was offered biscuits, and the friendly barman said I should just bark if I needed any water.

We also went to the Fat Badger, which is a buzzing bar and restaurant a few minutes’ walk away from where we were staying, and which also welcomes pooches.

We were staying at the impressivelooking Crown Hotel, which is situated in Montpelier, right in the heart of the town. It’s a landmark building with a fantastic history. In 1784, for example, head waiter William Thackway made

But they should bring their dogs because Harrogate is a great place for walks. Close to the hotel is Valley Gardens, a beautiful park that’s perfect for a stroll and alfresco doggy stuff

So my investigations reveal that there is more than enough to keep everyone entertained for a great day and night out, especially your pet doggo, and I can’t wait to go back to unearth some more surprises!

The Longevity Lifestyle:

Homes and Destinations that Add Years to Your Life

In an age where health is wealth, discerning individuals are choosing residences and retreats not just for luxury, but for lifespan and healthspan extension. From New York’s skyline to the Alpine serenity of Austria, the new longevity lifestyle is about where you live and where you go to keep living well.

At Home: One Wall Street– Financial District, New York City

Formerly the headquarters of the Bank of New York, One Wall Street, a landmark Art Deco building, has shed its corporate skin to become one of the city’s most sophisticated residential addresses, reimagined for a new generation of ultra-high-net-worth residents seeking a life that is not only longer but better.

While luxury real estate has long emphasised space, views, and service, today’s discerning buyers are looking for something deeper: a meaningful return on lifestyle investment. In this next chapter of super-prime real estate, longevity is the new luxury.

One Wall Street responds to this shift with a uniquely holistic approach. The development's standout feature is Life Time

One Wall Street – a 75,000-square-foot, four-floor athletic and wellness club that functions more like a medical-grade

health centre than a gym. Accessible directly to residents who gain automatic complimentary membership, Life Time represents a shift from aesthetic-focused fitness to longevity science as a lifestyle. With tailored fitness programmes which prioritise long-term longevity gains, residents have access to highly individualised dynamic personal training sessions that offer 24/7 lifestyle solutions, to include 360 body review programmes such as metabolic testing, blood work and In-Body machines that allow instructors to track and review progress of their clients, thereby further aiding their long-term functional health and mobility.

What sets One Wall Street apart is not just its location, history, or architecture—it’s the understanding that the next era of luxury is about quality of life over time. In a world where wellness is a daily practice, this development offers something truly unique: residences designed to enhance lifespan and healthspan without leaving home.

If there’s one place that continues to lead the global conversation on living better for longer, it’s VIVAMAYR Maria Wörth. Tucked along the glittering shores of Lake Wörthersee in southern Austria, this iconic medical retreat is far more than a wellness escape– it’s a longevity blueprint backed by science, tradition, and transformation.

Rooted in the principles of Modern Mayr Medicine, VIVAMAYR offers highly individualised programmes designed to reboot your body from the inside out. From the moment you arrive, your experience is anchored in clinical diagnostics— metabolic analysis, gut health profiling, and inflammation testing—used to craft a personalised path toward cellular regeneration and long-term vitality. The treatments are as targeted as they are diverse: nutrient-rich IV infusions, abdominal therapies to retrain digestion, cryotherapy, and more. Everything is meticulously curated to reduce internal stress, support detoxification, and restore metabolic balance.

But what sets VIVAMAYR apart is that it doesn’t end at checkout. Guests leave not just feeling lighter, clearer, and re-energised, but armed with a toolkit for everyday longevity.

Throughout your stay, VIVAMAYR’s doctors, therapists, and nutritionists share practical, evidence-based rituals and recommendations that you can take home—from mindful eating habits and gut-supportive routines to posture and breathing techniques that rebalance the nervous system.

Even the food philosophy—alkaline-forming, seasonal, simple—becomes a sustainable approach to living, not just something you do while there. For many, this is where the true transformation begins: VIVAMAYR helps you build new habits that extend the benefits of your stay for months, even years.

Add to that the serenity of the lake, the clarity of the mountain air, and the rhythm of your own restored body, and you begin to understand why so many return year after year. It’s not luxury for luxury’s sake—it’s luxury as a healthspan strategy.

For those serious about wellness with purpose, VIVAMAYR Maria Wörth is the ultimate summer investment— in yourself and in your future.

This is travel for those who appreciate true room to roam.

With 15 accommodation categories –from 307-square-foot suites to the palatial 4,443-square-foot Regent Suite (a cool $11,000 per night) – the ship delivers true residential elegance. Natural light floods every suite. Layouts are immaculate. Think polished stone, rich wood, bespoke textiles, and clever touches that show this wasn’t just designed for beauty, but for life lived well.

stagecraft worthy of the West End, and world-class performers in a theatre that rivals the best on land.

As someone who’s never cruised, I was lucky enough to step aboard for an exclusive preview –and I was enchanted. The first impression? This isn’t a ship. It’s a luxury hotel with water views that move.

From the serene elegance of Coffee Connection, where fine espresso meets fresh fruit and spirits, to the gorgeous Observation Lounge, a glamorous space to sip and sail away, every corner is designed to elevate. The staff are warm, engaging and everywhere –but never in the way.

I’ll admit I got lost more than once (the café to the ladies’ room was a voyage in itself!), but it was the most enjoyable kind of lost – like wandering the corridors of an art-filled chateau on the Amalfi coast.

The activities on board are genuinely expansive. Wellness, enrichment, fitness, cooking, live entertainment, boutique shopping… you’ll run out of days before you run out of experiences.

Regent Seven Seas Grandeur is, quite simply, a triumph. From its couture-level interiors to its curated experiences and bespoke service, it is the cruise for those who typically don’t “do cruises.”

Palé Hall: Grandeur, Hares and Haute Cuisine in North Wales

There are hotels you stay in... and then there are hotels that stay with you. Palé Hall in Bala is firmly in the latter camp. Tucked into the edge of Snowdonia, this ultra-luxurious country house hotel is as quietly spectacular as it is genuinely warm and welcoming.

It’s the sort of place where hares dart through the formal gardens at dawn, where polished staff remember how you like your coffee, and where the tasting menu might just ruin you for all other tasting menus. Ever.

History of Palé Hall

Let’s start with the house. The existing Palé Hall is the third house of its name. Built between 1869 and 1871 for Henry Robertson, the eminent railway engineer, and Liberal MP for Merionyddshire under Gladstone. Finding the previous mansion too small for his growing family, Henry subsequently demolished it and built the beautiful honey stoned Palé Hall that you see today. Henry died in 1888, at the age of 72, after becoming paralyzed at Palé Hall. He left Palé to his only son Henry, who was knighted two years later by Queen Victoria.

Palé Hall is a Grade II* listed Victorian mansion that in 1889 hosted Queen Victoria as part of her tour of North Wales. Enchanted by the house and the area, she was accompanied by her youngest daughter and close companion Princess Beatrice, and her granddaughter Princess Alix of Hesse, who later married Tsar Nicholas of Russia and was executed with her family in 1917 during the Russian revolution. A walk the Queen particularly enjoyed along the riverbank is known today as the Queen’s Walk. The original bath, and antique half poster bed that she used during her stay are still there. The owners (the Robertson family) vacated the hall for the duration of the Queen’s stay to accommodate the Queen’s considerable entourage.

By the early 20th century, the house had acquired electric lighting, supplied by its own hydro-electric plant.

The original system was installed in 1920 at great expense. Both the original and the new turbine are powered by water

from the stream at the top of the mountain. From there it is piped down the hillside through two inspection chambers to the turbine house, a field away from Palé, near the river.

Thanks to this free electricity, Palé was able to remain in such good condition despite lying empty for twenty-two years. Eighteen electric fires were run from this equipment and positioned around the house, whilst it was unoccupied.

As the original turbine created DC electricity the house had to be rewired to AC electricity, to comply with safety regulations – incorporating seven miles of cabling and approximately 440 sockets!

The current owners Alan and Angela Harper, have updated the entire system, installing a more efficient turbine that generates the right kind of electricity with an additional 60% efficiency. When there is sufficient water, this provides all the electricity for the hotel and the outbuildings, as well as feeding the surplus into the national grid. The original turbine and its switches have been preserved within the hotel, as a piece of mechanical history.

Among the unsung heroes of the Great War are many of Britain’s stately homes, along with their owners and staff, who played a vital role by transforming into convalescent homes and hospitals for wounded soldiers. Palé Hall was proud to serve as one of these auxiliary hospitals, providing a haven of peace and comfort for 38 soldiers wounded in both body and mind, one of whom was a recipient of the Victoria Cross. A citation to Palé Hall’s contributions to the Great War effort, presented by the Red Cross, can be found adjacent to the entrance to the Henry Robertson restaurant.

In 1939 the gates of Palé were thrown open again, this time to evacuated children from the inner cities. A nursery school was established within the wing adjacent to the rear courtyard within the former family schoolroom, where 40 children were accommodated under the care and supervision of a team of nannies.

The life experienced by the children given refuge here, would have been different to anything they had ever known. The Palé Estate offered the freedom to roam, indulge in new activities, enjoy the dogs and ponies and discover the wonders of the countryside.

In the 1050’s the house was sold to the fourth Duke of Westminster who purchased the estate primarily for the shooting rights over 32,000 acres and made Palé Hall part of the social scene for the country pursuits set. Winston Churchill was one of several illustrious visitors to Palé during this period.

Palé Hall today

Palé Hall was closed and rather neglected for several years, however, with free electricity it was possible to run electric heaters round the clock, throughout the closure, which prevented damp and preserved the condition of the interior. It opened as a luxury hotel for the first time in 1984.

Seeking a new challenge, Alan and Angela Harper bought the hotel in 2015 and invested considerable time and funds in sympathetically restoring the house to its original Victorian glory. The reincarnation in Palé history began in September 2016, and within six years of Angela and Alan’s stewardship Palé Hall achieved Five AA Red Stars, Three AA Rosettes for its food, and membership of the exclusive Relais & Chateaux consortium.

The hotel offers 22 individually designed bedrooms and Garden suites, two restaurants inhabiting the dining room with its extravagantly carved sideboard and the original drawing room, and several elegant lounges with the intricate ceiling covings and detailed fireplaces of which Henry Robertson was so fond. The Clock Tower still chimes the quarter hours above the service courtyard, and the old stables and kennels courtyard can be glimpsed just inside the main gate. The former Victorian plunge pool and exercise bath exiting directly onto the lawns at the rear of the building had to be filled in and now accommodates the admin team.

Alan and Angela are proud owners, continuing the warm welcome and hospitality for which Henry Robertson was so well known.

There’s nothing stiff or stuffy about Palé Hall – just beautifully preserved grandeur with a twist of contemporary comfort.

It’s beautiful windows, rich wood panelling, roaring fires, and high ceilings – but it’s also velvet sofas, curated artwork, and a warm dog-friendly welcome in the lounge. And that bar? Equal parts gentleman’s club and greenhouse. Planning permission is in for a large orangery at the back, that will flood even more light and life, into the building, and for four more cottages on the grounds.

The tasting menu might just ruin you for all others.

Dining that dazzles

The tasting menu – crafted with flair and precision – is simply extraordinary. Whether you’re a seasoned fine diner or just someone who appreciates flavour done right, Palé Hall’s kitchen delivers in waves of creative brilliance.

From delicate amuse-bouchées that tease the senses, to perfectly cooked Welsh lamb and jewel-like desserts, the experience feels indulgent without being intimidating. Although, it is a menu where you don’t know what it is, or to expect, until it arrives and you taste it! Each plate is a small, delicious and beautifully executed surprise. Wine pairings? Spot on. Service? Seamless. £120 per person, but well worth it.

Sleep among the pines

There are 18 rooms in the main house, each one individually designed, filled with character and calm. But if you prefer a little more privacy, you’ll love the three garden suites tucked away across the grounds. These chic hideaways offer woodland views, freestanding baths, and a sense of space that feels very… un-hotel-like. It’s luxury with foresight – and flexibility for returning guests – and nothing is too much trouble for the staff at Palé Hall.

The grounds

Here’s where Palé Hall truly wins hearts. The grounds are an idyllic mix of manicured paths and wilder woods, scattered with sculptures, art installations and open space. You’ll spot rabbits at dusk, hares at dawn, and a sense of peace that’s hard to put into words.

It’s the kind of place where time slows down. Where the Wi-Fi works, but you forget to check it. Where a walk after breakfast turns into a wander that ends with drinks by the fire.

People

make Palé

There aren’t dozens of staff here. And honestly? That’s the charm. The small, dedicated team are incredibly attentive –without ever crossing into overbearing. They know when to chat, when to step back, and how to make you feel like a returning regular even on your first visit.

You won’t find robotic service or scripted interactions. Just real people who genuinely want you to love your stay. And you will.

“There are hotels you stay in... and then there are hotels that stay with you.”

Palé Hall isn’t just five-star. It’s five-star with soul. The kind of place you visit once and then find yourself planning your return before you’ve even checked out.

The Black Nose Vallais Sheep and Highland Cows are wonderful to see, and worth trying to give the sheep a quick squidge, but with her baby lambs in tow, mummy sheep wasn’t for sharing.

Whether you’re celebrating something special, sneaking away for a grown-up weekend, or looking for that somewhere special that still has space for the kids – this is it.

It’s where luxury meets sincerity. Where heritage doesn’t mean pretension. And where every stay feels like it’s just for you.

The Bryntirion Inn: A Gastropub worth the drive

If you're the type who loves a great Sunday roast and doesn’t mind a little road trip for the reward, point your wheels towards Bala, North Wales. Nestled just outside the gates of the renowned Palé Hall Estate, The Bryntirion Inn is the latest chapter in this five-star enclave’s story – and a delicious one at that.

Having undergone a £1 million makeover, this 17th-century inn has been given a thoughtful new lease of life by owners Anthony and Donna CooperBarney. It’s now a gastropub with rooms that manages to feel both refined and familiar, serving elevated comfort food in the kind of relaxed setting that feels made for a long lunch or post-walk supper.

Inside, it’s all cosy stone walls, oak beams, and glowing fireplaces –authentic but not overly done. The dining room is warm and inviting with space for 60, and the adjoining bar has kept its heart as a locals’ favourite. What’s especially unique here is the nod to motoring history: you’ll spot motorsport memorabilia throughout, a personal touch from Anthony’s private collection that makes it a bit of a haven for classic car buffs.

And now, the food. We came for the Sunday roast, and it didn’t disappoint. The star? Roasted sirloin of Welsh beef, served perfectly pink, paired with crisp roasties – seriously, they might be the best we’ve had outside of our own kitchen. (And we don’t say that lightly.) Add in cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire puds, and lashings of gravy, and you’ve got all the comfort you could want after a walk in the hills.

Head Chef Tristan Fitt, whose background includes the likes of Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and The Westbury in Mayfair, champions local ingredients with flair. Meat comes from respected Bala butcher TJ Roberts, veg from down-the-road growers, and even the eggs hail from just a few miles away. The à la carte menu leans into this sense of place, with dishes like Chicken Liver Parfait lifted with Asian plum and lemongrass, and a nostalgic Bryn Strawberry Trifle that ’ll make you smile like a kid again.

Drinks-wise, there’s a solid selection of Welsh beers and ciders on tap, plus local spirits and a well-judged wine list pulled together by Palé Hall’s sommelier. For those laying off the booze, the alcohol -free options are far better than an apologetic orange juice.

We didn’t stay over this time, but next time. Absolutely. The Bryntirion has six individually styled rooms, each named after a Welsh mountain. They start at £140 a night, with breakfast delivered to your door in a generous hamper. Dogs are welcome (bonus points) and there’s even a family room for those travelling with little adventurers.

With Eryri National Park on its doorstep and Bala Lake just down the road, this is a great base for hiking, biking, or just refuelling in style. Whether you're driving a classic Jag or just fancy a proper pub meal in beautiful surroundings, The Bryntirion Inn ticks all the right boxes.

Slow-living meets design brilliance in the heart of Denmark’s capital

Copenhagen

There’s something about Copenhagen. It doesn’t clamour for attention; it simply draws you in with effortless charm. This is a city built on calm confidence – a place where design is thoughtful, food is soulful, and life is lived beautifully, one quiet moment at a time. You feel it straight away. The pace here is easy, gentle. Locals glide by on bikes along leafy lanes and canals, the city revealing itself softly through pastel-hued townhouses, open-air food markets, and streets that invite you to explore without hurry.

Renting a bike is more than a tourist tip – it’s your ticket to feeling like you belong.

Sleep Well, Stay Well

For a stay that combines style and soul, the 25hours Hotel Indre By brings playful energy to Copenhagen’s cool. Housed in a former university building, the hotel leans into creative flair – think literary touches, vintage typewriters, bold fabrics, and art that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Each room – from medium single to ‘gigantic’– has personality to spare. This isn’t polished perfection; it’s design with a wink. The luxury is in the details: vinyl listening stations, quirky ‘things shops,’ Freitag bags for loan, and a buzzing courtyard bar where locals and guests unwind side-by-side. Sister property 25hours Hotel Paper Island, set on a breezy waterfront,

is all relaxed retreat vibes – maritime moods, soft sunlight, and a summer house spirit. Think of it as the coastal cousin to the city-centre original.

A Taste of Copenhagen

Copenhagen’s food scene is as finely curated as its interiors. At Aamanns Deli, the humble smørrebrød is reimagined with seasonal flair – house-cured salmon, roast beef with horseradish, all presented with minimalist finesse.

For something with a Mediterranean heartbeat, NENI (tucked inside 25hours Hotel Indre By) plates up Tel Aviv-style dishes perfect for sharing. It’s sociable, spirited and full of flavour.

Across the water, Tiger Lily serves inventive Pan-Asian with laid-back cool, while Tom’s Oyster Shack (just off Nyhavn) brings New England charm to Denmark’s capital with seafood served fresh, fast, and full of soul. From oysters and lobster rolls to spicy tuna melts and plant-based picks, it’s all about good food, good drinks, and good company.

Design Runs Deep

You can’t come to Copenhagen without falling for its design sensibility. From the sleek lighting at Louis Poulsen to the delicate hand-painted porcelain at the Royal Copenhagen Flagship, there’s craftsmanship in every corner. Even the opera house – best approached by boat – feels more like sculpture than structure.

“ The luxury? Living slowly and living well. ”

And for something a little different? Head to Øens Have, Copenhagen’s largest urban farm. Tucked away on Refshaleøen, this green oasis offers long-table dining surrounded by rows of herbs and vegetables. It’s a celebration of seasonality, sustainability, and slowing right down.

See the City by Sea

To really let Copenhagen work its magic, take to the water. With Hey Captain, you’ll sip prosecco as you cruise past colourful townhouses and under low bridges, captains spinning local stories like old friends. It’s the city at its most cinematic.

But the real magic? It’s in the small things – a quiet coffee in Vesterbro, the crunch of gravel in the King’s Garden, the golden glow of evening light on cobblestones. Here, design isn’t just how things look. It’s how things feel. How they live.

The Art of Living Well

Copenhagen isn’t flashy. It doesn’t need to be. It’s a city that leads with intention – carbon-neutral goals, cycle-first living, organic food culture. Here, luxury isn’t about excess. It’s about living well, thoughtfully.

This is a destination that stays with you. Elegant without being effortful. Sophisticated without being showy. For those in search of beauty, culture, and calm, Copenhagen is always the right idea.

Bonus points to the genuinely warm staff in the Club Lounge, and to the front-desk team that make every arrival feel like a welcome-back moment.

Stick around on Friday nights and you’ll catch live acoustic sets between 6.30 and 8.30pm – just the ticket for an easy evening in without having to leave the building.

Explore Chiswick Like a Local The neighbourhood’s got serious charm – think Georgian townhouses, leafy parks, independent shops and historic houses, all wrapped up in that distinctly West London calm. London’s Coolest Eco Escape

If you're heading down to the capital and fancy something a little more chilled than your typical hotel, let us point you in the direction of room2 Chiswick –a “hometel” that’s all about doing things differently.

Montcalm Royal London House: Chic Stays, Skyline Views …and Seriously Good Steak

If you're heading to the capital and want a hotel that delivers on location, luxury and indulgence, Montcalm Royal London House should be firmly on your radar. Tucked between the buzz of Old Street and the elegance of Finsbury Square, this city-centre escape is as convenient as it is stylish – ideal whether you’re down for business, a romantic weekend, or a food-fuelled city break.

First impressions count, and Montcalm nails them. From the moment we stepped inside, the vibe was slick but warm – contemporary interiors, a calming scent in the air, and front-of-house staff that struck just the right balance between professional and personable. The manager even popped over to greet us on arrival, which, let’s be honest, doesn’t happen everywhere these days. It set the tone for a stay that felt considered from start to finish.

The rooms are a mood – literally. With adjustable ambient lighting that lets you tailor your space from energising and fresh to soothing and spa-like. Add the fluffiest robes we’ve slipped into in a while, plus a bed that felt like it was giving us a full-body hug, and you’ve got the perfect city wind-down zone. Whether you’re heading out for drinks or calling it an early one, the room becomes whatever you want it to be.

Dinner was at Aviary, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and bar, and it’s a scene in itself. Think skyline views, laid-back glamour, and a menu that goes big on seasonal ingredients and bold flavours. We went for the sirloin steak and stone bass—both cooked to perfection, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavour. There’s nothing fussy here, just quality produce, confident cooking, and atmosphere.

Cocktails deserve a mention too. From classics with a twist to signature mixes, the drinks were as good as the view. The vibe was buzzy without being overbearing – ideal for lingering long after your plates are cleared.

Morning brought more good things. Breakfast was served with elegance and a side of calm (no chaotic buffets here). Whether you lean savoury, sweet, or somewhere in between, there’s plenty to tempt. We left satisfied and impressed after our veggie breakfasts, and even the coffee hit the spot.

The newly upgraded spa is a peaceful, design-led space that feels miles away from the busy streets outside. Although we didn’t squeeze in a treatment this time, the vibe alone was blissful – think soft lighting, gentle music, and a zen atmosphere that instantly lowers the pulse. It’s the kind of place where time slows down and you forget you’re in the heart of one of the world’s busiest cities.

From its spot-on location to its rooftop dining, atmospheric rooms and polished service, Montcalm Royal London House delivers all the elements of a great city break – without the fuss. The team here have clearly thought about what makes a stay feel special: a warm welcome, standout food, creature comforts, and little details that linger long after check-out.

It’s ideal for couples wanting a stylish base for exploring Shoreditch or shopping in Soho, professionals seeking calm after a packed London schedule, or anyone just after a taste of the high life – without the snobbery.

Would we go back? Absolutely. And next time, we’ll book a spa treatment too.

Later, a Pure Salt Grain Massage set the tone for an evening of ultimate unwind, followed by Garden Spa explorations (yes to the swim-up bar with prosecco, no thank you to the icy plunge!).

As the sun set, we headed to Stables Restaurant – a celebration of locally sourced, seasonal produce, presented with flair. Every plate was thoughtfully balanced, and the Champagne more than delivered.

Morning brought a delicious breakfast and a couple of productive hours, catching up on our laptops in the lounge – soon to be refurbished, we’re told, which only adds to the evolving story of this gem.

The Vibe:

The Megaro, King's Cross

Bursting with Individuality

If you like your London stays to come with a side of bold design, playful nostalgia, and a cracking cocktail or three – then The Megaro is calling. Two mins from both, King’s Cross and St. Pancras, this one-of-a-kind boutique hotel has ripped up the rulebook on your usual city stays. From the technicolour mural splashed across its façade to its genre-bending interiors, The Megaro is as London as it gets – creative, loud, and unapologetically individual.

Each of The Megaro’s rooms and suites plays out like a different cinematic chapter – equal parts drama, whimsy, and pure comfort. We stayed in the Pop Diva Suite, which channels the golden age of Hollywood in a riot of red velvet, gold accents, and plush lounging space. It even comes with its own glam station and a bathroom that practically begs for a champagne-fuelled soak.

Other standout stays include the Diesel Corner Studio and Backstage Britannia, all riffing on themes that echo the

hotel’s colourful King's Cross past. If you like your room to feel like a film set – with all the five-star creature comforts – this is for you.

Voyage, the hotel’s newest restaurant, is a serene, Scandi-inspired space where minimalism meets mastery. Michelin-starred Chef Patron Adam Simmonds serves a daring, seasonal seven-course tasting menu (£115) where each dish is a surprise –literally. The names are stripped down to single-word clues, leaving each bite a little revelation. Expect elegant techniques (foraging, fermenting, pickling), layers of flavour, and a strong nod to nature’s bounty. If you’re more "select and savour," an à la carte menu is also available.

Breakfast is served upstairs at Spagnoletti – a joyful mash-up of retro-futurism and rustic Italian charm. We weren’t hungry (thank you, Voyage), but the elevated beans on toast with crispy onions said otherwise. Spagnoletti isn’t just for mornings

though. Come afternoon, its bold take on classic Italian dishes and its 2 AA Rosettes makes it a hidden gem for a relaxed dinner with flair.

Downstairs, the underground Hokus Pokus bar is a destination all of its own. Think steampunk meets apothecary chic, complete with elixirs, botanical infusions, and a little touch of theatre –drinks with a twist (or a puff of smoke). On our visit, the place was buzzing –thanks in part to a tarot card event –and the drinks menu read like a Victorian science journal penned by a very stylish alchemist. Expect smoked, fat-washed, and house-fermented concoctions that somehow taste even better than they sound!

Throughout our stay, the staff were pitch-perfect – warm, chatty, and totally switched on. Whether recommending drinks, helping with travel plans, or just offering a friendly hello, the team made us feel like regulars from the get-go.

The Final Word

The Megaro isn’t trying to be your typical luxury hotel – and that’s exactly its charm. It’s a feast for the senses, a treat for design lovers, and the perfect London base for anyone craving a little character with their city break. Whether you’re heading down for a foodie weekend, catching a show, or hopping on the Eurostar, this place delivers style, substance, and a whole lot of fun.

Would we go back? In a heartbeat. Should you book it? Absolutely.

Life

in Rhythm: Insights from a Cardiologist's Diary

World Heart Day, Cardiologist’s Guide to Loving Your Heart

First established in 2000 by the World Heart Federation, World Heart Day is the world’s largest cardiovascular awareness campaign. Held annually on 29th September. What began as a day of awareness has grown into a global movement, encouraging millions to take charge of their heart health through education, lifestyle change, and community action.

How does heart rhythm factor into overall heart health, and why is it significant on World Heart Day?

Heart rhythm—the electrical activity that keeps your heart beating steadily— is fundamental to cardiovascular health. Irregular heart rhythms, or arrhythmias, can increase the risk of complications like stroke or heart failure. World Heart Day is a perfect reminder to pay attention not just to heart attacks and cholesterol, but also to heart rhythm health. Simple lifestyle measures and early detection through screening can help manage arrhythmias effectively and protect your heart’s natural beat.

In 2025, the campaign theme — “Love Your Heart, Live Your Life” reminds us that heart health is not just a medical concern; it’s a personal, social, and public health priority.

What simple lifestyle changes can people make to improve their heart health?

There are five foundational habits that anyone can adopt for a healthier heart:

1. Manage stress and prioritise sleep: Chronic stress and poor sleep elevate inflammation and can disrupt your heart rhythm. Daily mindfulness, restful sleep, and unplugging from screens help your heart recharge.

2. Eat for vitality: Follow a Mediterraneanstyle diet rich in vegetables, legumes, whole grains, fish, nuts, olive oil, and fruits, while limiting processed foods, sugary drinks, and salt.

3. Move your body: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week—whether that’s brisk walking, swimming, cycling, or even dancing. Movement boosts circulation and lowers blood pressure.

4. Quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke: Smoking doubles your heart attack risk, but the good news is benefits start within hours of quitting and last for decades.

5. Monitor your vital numbers: Keep track of your blood pressure,

cholesterol, blood sugar, and waist size—these silent markers predict your future cardiovascular risk.

I’ve heard our body clock affects heart health. Can you explain?

Absolutely. Our circadian rhythm— our internal 24-hour body clock—plays a crucial role in cardiovascular function.

Disruptions like poor sleep, late-night eating, and irregular daily routines can increase the risk of high blood pressure, metabolic problems, and heart rhythm issues. Prioritising consistent sleep schedules, getting morning sunlight, and eating earlier in the day helps synchronise your heart with its natural rhythm.

What final message would you like to share for World Heart Day 2025?

The heart beats around 100,000 times a day—often unnoticed, but never unimportant. This 29th September, let’s pause and listen. Heart disease is not just a disease of ageing. It affects people of all ages, including women, young adults, and children. And while advanced treatments have improved survival, prevention remains the most powerful tool.

Remember, a healthy rhythm is the key to a healthy life. Let’s take it to heart!

The Manchester Pain Clinic is a patient-centred service for all pain patients in Manchester and beyond. The Manchester Pain clinic offers some of the most comprehensive private pain medicine clinic services in the Northwest.

Dr Rajan has built on a strong legacy of training throughout the UK, including Manchester, London, Edinburgh, as well as Europe. Both he and his team seek to provide a service which combines cutting-edge interventional techniques with medicines management, rehabilitation where required and integration with physiotherapy care both before and after treatment. In addition, Dr Rajan works in close collaboration with a range of colleagues from sports medicine, neuroradiology, spinal surgery, and rheumatology to offer an outstanding ser vice to patients with a range of different pain complaints.

So what does that mean in practice? Let's take a closer look.

Medicine management

The medical management of pain is complex and involves a range of different classes of drugs. The aim is often to rationalise medicines, to prevent the frequent silent and unknown risk of certain drugs, including opioids and nerve-type painkiller medication.

By and large, nerve painkillers or neuropathic agents will only help around one in three patients. Deescalating these drugs in a considered manner can help with things like weight loss, cognitive dysfunction, balance issues, memory issues, and tolerance.

Whilst these agents undoubtedly have a place in certain pain conditions, they are often overprescribed, with the patient having little idea of the potential downstream deleterious effects

Morphine type drugs called opioids also come with a range of potential pros and cons. However, by and large, most patients will have a diminishing response over time, with many silent effects, including bone thinning and an increased risk of infertility and other hormonal issues, falls and fractures.

Dr Rajan works with other colleagues and his team, utilising expertise to try and prescribe the best modality of

drug to the right patient, at the right time. De-prescribing is also a key tenet of his practice, complemented by interventional procedures, investigations, and other treatments.

Interventional Procedures

Dr Rajan focusses on a range of interventional procedures for both arthritic or degenerative conditions, which can respond to techniques like joint injections, the use of regenerative medicine, or indeed, the use of ablative radio frequency technologies for issues such as hip, knee, shoulder, or back pain - both before and after surgery.

Dr Rajan also treats conditions related to dysfunction or disease of the nervous system. Such so-called neuropathic pain may respond to targeted interventions in conditions like occipital neuralgia or sciatica, with the use of techniques including nerve root blocks and pulsed radiofrequency.

Some of these conditions cannot be cured, but can be managed to reduce pain and improve function, whilst balancing out associated risks.

The Orth Team centre MDT Dr Rajan works within a world-class facility at the OrthTeam Centre, delivering high-quality care with a range

of colleagues from different specialities. As part of his practice, he contributes to the spinal multidisciplinary team.

This is a meeting of expert professionals discussing various aspects of pain, including spinal pain, to optimise treatment for the patient. Patient case studies are reviewed along with cuttingedge imaging to refine the diagnoses, inform further treatment and optimise care.

Interdisciplinary pain management

Dr Rajan works with a wider team integrated with community physiotherapy hubs, and where required, pain psychology to optimise, not just pain, but the understanding of the patient and their function. This service has been established for several years and has proven effective in dealing with several refractory and difficult-totreat pain conditions, with great impact on patients' lives.

Whilst pain medicine and the treatment of patients can be gratifying in many instances, The Manchester Pain Clinic is also able to deal with more complex conditions. In addition, The Manchester Pain Clinic provides expedient treatment for a range of other more common conditions to get patients back on their feet and doing what they want to do.

Ask the Expert

Dr Mahshid Nickkho-Amiry

Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at The Wilmslow Hospital and The Portland Hospital Outpatients, Hale. Dr Nickkho-Amiry has numerous publications on topics ranging from menstrual disorders and endometrial polyps to fertility. She provides expert guidance to patients with fertility concerns, ovulation disorders, and other reproductive challenges.

What affects fertility? In women, fertility naturally begins to decline around the age of 30, with a more noticeable drop off after the age of 35. Lifestyle choices also have a real impact. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can all affect reproductive health, as can poor nutrition, lack of exercise, and high stress levels. If a woman has a known gynaecological condition like endometriosis or fibroids, she may need additional support. In men, low testosterone or exposure to prolonged heat, i.e. laptops directly on the lap for a long time, can reduce the quality of sperm, so being mindful of your daily activities and making changes if you’re wanting to start a family can go a long way.

My partner and I are trying to get pregnant, but it is taking longer than expected. When should I see a doctor? We generally advise couples to try for up to 12 months before seeing a doctor, but with a few important caveats. If after six months of regular (every 2-3 days) unprotected sex with no success, then it’s worth speaking to a fertility health professional, especially if the woman is 35 years or older. Similarly, if irregular or absent periods are a problem, the woman has PCOS or has a history of multiple miscarriages, it’s advisable to get checked out earlier rather than later.

What to expect at a fertility appointment? Your consultation

Dr Lance Sandle

For over 10 years, Private GP Extra has supported individuals and families with flexible, trusted healthcare. Their new Lipid Clinic in Hale is led by Dr Lance Sandle, a Consultant Chemical Pathologist with nearly 40 years’ experience, including 34 years running Trafford’s Outpatient Lipid Clinic.

What are lipids? Why are they important?

Lipids are fats insoluble in water. In the blood, they are coated with a protein layer, acting like a detergent. Laboratory measurements typically include cholesterol and triglycerides. Over time, these fats build up inside arteries, potentially blocking those supplying the heart or brain. Higher lipid levels increase the risk of early problems.

What is the significance of the results I receive?

LDL cholesterol is a marker of harmful particles that block arteries, increasing heart disease and stroke risk. This is usually the main treatment target.

HDL cholesterol helps remove harmful lipids from the bloodstream. The higher, the better.

Triglycerides are not a major risk factor, but are often linked to obesity and diabetes. Very high levels can cause pancreas inflammation.

Total cholesterol, first measured in the 1930s, is not very useful alone as a coronary risk factor.

will typically begin with a detailed discussion where you’ll be asked how long you’ve been trying, the woman’s menstrual cycle and any unusual symptoms (like pain or irregularity), your weight/height will be recorded as well as features about your lifestyle, diet, exercise – the same will be asked of your partner. Following this, you’ll likely have some blood tests taken to check your hormone levels and ovarian reserve, a pelvic ultrasound to examine the womb, ovaries, fallopian tubes and follicles present. Your partner will also undergo semen analysis to check sperm count, motility and shape to present a full picture of your fertility health before we put together a treatment plan.

Why should I take medication, and what are the side effects?

Consider medication if you have: raised LDL and other lipid results, cardiovascular risk (assessable on the QRisk website), personal/family history of heart disease and genetic predisposition. Initial treatment is usually a statin, which is highly effective. Side effects may include muscle aches or, rarely, liver issues. There are many alternatives if statins cause problems or are insufficient

A Clearer, More Confident You –The Invisalign Story

You’ve thought about straightening your teeth before, haven’t you? Maybe when you catch your reflection in a photo or smile in the mirror. Maybe you've told yourself it’s too late, too complicated, or just not the right time

What if it didn’t have to be that way?

At R&G Dental, we’ve seen hundreds of patients walk in with that same thought and walk out with a smile that changes everything. Invisalign is the quiet, invisible kind of magic that does just that. No brackets. No wires. Just a gentle, precise way to align your teeth while you carry on living your life.

So, what actually happens?

It starts with a conversation. You sit down with one of our friendly dentists for a detailed consultation. We scan your

teeth using advanced 3D technology (no gooey impressions here!) and you get to see something amazing: a digital preview of what your future smile could look like.

From there, your personal treatment plan is created. A series of custommade, clear aligners is designed to move your teeth, bit by bit. You wear each one for a week or two, and as you swap them out, your teeth begin to shift, gently and discreetly.

You’ll pop into the practice every 4 to 6 weeks so we can check your progress and give you your next sets of aligners. Most patients complete their Invisalign journey in around 6 to 8 months. And yes, the change is as exciting as it sounds.

The best part? No one needs to know. You can remove your aligners to eat, brush, floss, and take photos. You can straighten your teeth without anyone noticing. All the while, you’ll start to smile more freely—even before your treatment is done.

Did You Know?

Straighter teeth can boost confidence and self-expression. In fact, people who smile more often are perceived as more trustworthy and successful.

Misaligned teeth can affect how you speak, chew, and even breathe. Straightening your teeth isn’t just cosmetic; it can improve everyday comfort.

Most people who finish Invisalign say it changed how they see themselves.

It’s more than teeth; it’s a transformation in how you show up in the world.

No more “maybe one day.”

This is your moment. Your smile. Your story.

Scan the QR code to get started. Because Invisalign is no longer out of reach. It’s right here, waiting for you.

Nash: We’d seen how long NHS wait times and reactive care affect working adults. We wanted a proactive model —same-day GP access and annual health checks—to catch problems early and reduce absence before it leads to burnout.

Wesley: UK businesses lose around £20 billion annually to sickness absence. For us, early access isn’t just compassionate—it’s critical for productivity and staff morale.

GM: What ’s the Prestige Private Health model for businesses?

Wesley: We offer tiered subscriptions—Bronze to Platinum —per employee. Bronze ensures prompt GP access, while higher tiers offer more consultations and detailed annual health screenings, including blood tests and cardiovascular risk assessments.

Nash: And unlike traditional providers, we see staff onsite at their workplace, at home, or through video and telephone consultations—whatever works best. This flexibility removes access barriers and supports early intervention.

GM: Are there tax benefits that make this appealing to companies?

Wesley: Absolutely. HMRC allows one annual medical check-up and one health screening per employee to be entirely tax-exempt—no Benefit in Kind (BIK) or National Insurance if offered to all staff

Nash: Plus, it's fully tax-deductible as a business expense. And when a single sick day costs a business an average of £107 per employee, the financial case is strong.

GM: How do you compare to providers like BUPA or Vitality?

Wesley: They’re insurance-first —often reactive, policy-restricted, and app-driven. With Prestige, you get direct GP access, continuity of care, and no call centres or referral delays.

Nash: And we have no exclusion criteria. We don’t turn anyone away due to past or existing medical conditions. As GPs, we’re trained to manage everything—from chronic illness to mental health—under one roof. It’s truly personalised healthcare, delivered wherever your team needs it.

For high-achieving professionals, health is non-negotiable — but time is often in short supply. That’s where Prestige Private Health steps in. Founded by two highly experienced GPs, Dr Nash and Dr Wes, this service is redefining what it means to have access to first-class, personalised healthcare, offering clients direct, same-day access to their personal GP.

GM: Why are annual health screenings so valuable?

Wesley: They help us detect early -stage conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or stress-related illness before they lead to long-term absence or crisis management. It’s proactive care with a measurable return on investment.

Nash: With NHS access under pressure and insurance models shifting toward prevention, our annual checks help companies stay ahead, reduce risk, and show employees they’re genuinely valued.

GM: Outside clinical life, what keeps you grounded?

Nash: Family time is essential, and I’m also passionate about aviation. I’m currently learning to fly light aircraft and work as an Aeromedical Examiner (AME), performing medicals for commercial and private pilots at Manchester and Liverpool Airports.

Wesley: I’m the team doctor for a professional football team, so when I’m not pitchside with the pros, I’m spending time with my wife and two sons.

GM: What ’s your message to CEOs and HR teams?

Wesley: Reactive healthcare is costly. Investing in proactive, flexible care boosts productivity, reduces absenteeism, and improves staff loyalty.

Nash: This isn’t just a staff perk—it’s a strategic investment. A healthier team means fewer disruptions and better business performance. And with no exclusions, we’re ready to support every employee, whatever their health needs.

GM: How can businesses get started?

Wesley: Visit the website for a free employer consultation. No obligation— just practical advice on protecting your team’s health and improving workplace wellbeing.

Understanding Kidney Stones

What are kidney stones?

Kidney stones are mineral lumps that form in the pipework of the kidneys when certain substances in the urine — mainly minerals and salts like calcium, oxalate, or uric acid — become too concentrated and stick together. They can range in size from a grain of sand to the size of a golf ball. Some of them stay in the kidney, but some move down the ureter (kidney tube) and can get stuck.

What causes kidney stones?

Dehydration is one of the biggest risk factors for kidney stones. When you don’t drink enough fluid, urine becomes more concentrated, increasing the chance of minerals in your urine forming crystals and then stones. We also know that diets high in salt, sugar, or animal protein make stones more likely. Other risk factors include being overweight, digestive diseases like Crohn’s disease, certain medications, and a family history of stones.

What symptoms would I get with kidney stones?

Symptoms can vary widely. Stones that are not causing any blockage in the kidney may cause little or no symptoms. Stones that get stuck in the ureter block the flow of urine and can cause sudden,

excruciating pain in the back or side. Some people also experience blood in the urine, nausea, vomiting, fever, or a persistent urge to urinate.

What treatments are available for kidney stones?

Treatment depends on the stone’s size, location, and whether it is causing symptoms or complications. Small stones may pass by themselves. For larger stones or those that don’t pass, various procedures are available. Shock Wave Lithotripsy (SWL) remains widely used — it breaks stones into smaller fragments using high-energy sound waves, allowing them to pass naturally. Ureteroscopy is another common procedure where a thin telescope instrument is inserted into the urinary tract under an anaesthetic to break up and remove stones with a laser. For very large or complex stones, a keyhole operation called Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) may be performed, where instruments are inserted through a small incision in the back to remove the stone.

What are the latest developments and the future for treating kidney stones?

Advances in laser technology have made ureteroscopy safer and more effective for breaking stones into

dust-like fragments. New, more flexible scopes allow urologists to reach stones in difficult locations in the kidney.

There is also an increasing focus on prevention. Genetic testing is helping identify people who have inherited conditions that increase their risk. New medications are being studied to lower levels of substances like oxalate or uric acid in the urine. Some researchers are working on probiotics that may help the gut break down oxalate, reducing stone formation naturally.

How can I prevent kidney stones?

Preventing stones is still mainly about lifestyle: staying well-hydrated is the single most effective step. Dietary adjustments such as cutting back on salt, eating less meat, and ensuring adequate calcium intake (too little paradoxically increases stone risk). Regular follow-up with a specialist, urine tests, and stone analysis help tailor prevention plans. Together, these advances mean fewer people need to suffer the pain and disruption of kidney stones in the future.

Next-Level Rehab and Performance:

Introducing VALD Testing

at

Our Wilmslow Clinic

At the cutting edge of modern physiotherapy, accurate measurement is key, and we’re thrilled to announce that our Wilmslow clinic is now offering VALD Performance testing and analysis, taking your rehab, fitness, and performance to an entirely new level.

Whether you’re recovering from an injury, working to prevent one, focused on extending your health span, or you’re an athlete aiming for peak condition, VALD technology gives us the tools to assess, track, and optimise your physical performance like never before.

What is VALD Performance Testing?

VALD is a global leader in human measurement technology, trusted by elite sports teams, healthcare professionals, and high-performance athletes worldwide. Their suite of tools are designed to capture and analyse vital data around movement, strength, balance, and power. At our clinic, we’re now using VALD ForceDecks and Dynamo — industry-leading dual force plates and dynamometry that provide detailed insights into how your body performs, reacts, and recovers.

This technology allows us to measure upper and lower limb symmetry, jump performance, landing mechanics and muscular strength imbalances. The ForceDecks and Dynamo capture real-time force production data at high speeds, giving us an unprecedented view of your neuromuscular function and ability. It’s precise, scientific, and completely personalised.

Who Can Benefit?

The beauty of VALD testing lies in its versatility. It’s suitable for a wide range of patients and goals:

• Rehabilitation Patients: If you’re approaching or recovering from surgery, injury, or ongoing pain, VALD helps us assess where you are in your recovery and what’s needed to progress safely and effectively.

• Athletes & Sports Enthusiasts: For those returning to sport after injury, these tests provide key return-to-play markers and profiling, helping better prepare the body for sport-specific requirements and reduce the risk of re-injury alongside supporting peak performance.

• Health and Wellness Clients: Want to stay strong, agile, and injury-free as you age? VALD’s objective data helps us support you in extending your health span, not just your lifespan.

What Does Testing Involve?

A typical session involves a series of quick, non-invasive tests using the ForceDecks platform and Isometric Dynamometry. These might include jump tests, balance assessments, isometric holds, or movement patterns, depending on your goals. The system instantly processes the results, which we then review with you in detail.

We will explain what your results mean, how they compare to benchmarks, and

where there’s room for improvement. This data becomes the foundation for your personalised rehab or training plan.

The Ultimate Training & Rehab Tool

Our goal is not just to diagnose and treat — we aim to educate and empower. That’s why, alongside the VALD assessments, we offer follow-up training sessions to help you understand how to translate the data into action. These sessions can focus on areas such as building strength, correcting imbalances, or improving explosive power and functional movement.

By combining cutting-edge technology with expert physiotherapy knowledge, we’re able to provide an unmatched level of precision and individualisation in your care.

Pricing & Booking

Our VALD testing and assessment sessions start from £160, which includes the initial consultation, full use of the ForceDecks and Dynamo system, data interpretation and advice. Follow-up training and review sessions can be added to help you make the most of your results.

Whether you’re striving for peak performance, safe recovery, or simply want to move better and feel stronger, VALD testing is the ultimate tool to get you there.

Comptoir Libanais

Located in Spinningfields, Comptoir Libanais offers an impressive array of authentic Lebanese food, drink, and culture

Comptoir Libanais translates to Lebanese counter and was where the story of the now-famous restaurant began. Founder Tony Kitous set out to spread the flavours of Lebanon and began by designing an affordable pop-up canteen or ‘counter’ displaying a selection of Lebanese cuisine. The delicious Lebanese food grew in popularity, and now there are twenty-seven restaurants, spreading an appreciation for Lebanese dining.

Upon visiting, it is evident why it is so popular; the maximalist décor with bright colours and flowers transports you from the dreary streets of Manchester to the vibrant coast of Lebanon. As well as boasting delicious flavours through food, their drink and, in particular, their wine selection are especially impressive. From a selection of divine cocktails and homemade lemonades to serving wine directly from Chateau Ksara, the oldest vineyard in Lebanon.

In Comptoir Libanais, you can feast as though you are in the Middle East with a range of dishes designed for sharing and embracing commensality. The idea of commensality is the bond that is created through eating together. With options such as ‘The Feast’, you can try a range of mezze plates and platters, which is a perfect way to experience a range of tastes from Lebanon. Other plates, such as starting with Lebanese wings or the feta and red pepper dip with flatbreads (a personal favourite), are a great way to begin the night. For the main, rice bowls, with options such as the chicken shawarma and vegetarian choices, such as the falafel bowl, are a delightful way to have an individual but authentic Lebanese experience.

The atmosphere in the restaurant creates a sense of togetherness as described by Steve Alborough, who stated, “there is a sense of connection and community,” through the nature of Lebanese dining. Comptoir Libanais is a great place for delicious, authentic Lebanese food and drink, while connecting with friends and family and makes for a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Taking place on select Fridays each month, the event is more than just a meal — it’s a sensory journey. Each supper celebrates the many regional interpretations of biryani: from the saffron-laced Hyderabadi style to the slow-cooked, aromatic Lucknowi version. It's a curated experience of spice, storytelling, and sumptuous indulgence.

“Our Biryani Supper Club is a celebration of culture, cooking and community,” says Tayub Amjad, Zouk’s founder. “Biryani was always the centrepiece of our family gatherings growing up — especially for my father. We wanted to share that sense of occasion with our guests.”

Each ticketed evening offers guests an immersive flavour showcase paired with warm hospitality and the buzzy, contemporary vibe Zouk is known for. The cost? A well-spent £50 per person, with bookings available now via the restaurant’s website.

Sexy Fish Manchester: Ocean-Inspired Opulence

If you're searching for your next glamorous night out – with bold flavour, jaw-dropping interiors and cocktails worth dressing up for – Sexy Fish Manchester delivers the full experience. This Asian-inspired hotspot, tucked into Spinningfields, is the third Sexy Fish outpost, following its A-list-loved locations in London’s Mayfair and Miami’s Brickell district.

Drenched in visual drama and decadence, with a surrealist-meets -underwater fantasy, Sexy Fish’s interiors are made for your camera roll: giant aquariums, glowing sculptures, slick marble finishes, and yes – even the toilets are Instagrammable. Think gold basins, moody lighting and luxe detailing that makes a mirror selfie feel like a fashion shoot.

Summer evenings are best spent on the outdoor Terrace, now open and serving a bespoke collection of Henrick’s gin cocktails with a signature Sexy Fish twist.

We visited on a warm May evening. The atmosphere was relaxed when we arrived at 7.30pm but quickly picked up with a stylish crowd flowing in and out all night. Our server recommended sharing six dishes – though, truthfully, that was slightly ambitious.

We began with the Spicy Chicken Wings (£9) and the gorgeously fresh Crispy Duck & Watermelon Salad (£19). From there, the feast continued:

• Lobster Tempura (£42) –light, crisp and utterly luxurious

• Tiger Prawn Skewers (£16) –smoky and satisfying

• Caramelised Black Cod (£45) –silky, rich, and my absolute favourite

• Spicy Beef Tenderloin (£36) –perfectly tender with a welcome kick

• Tenderstem Broccoli (£9) –even the greens impress

The dishes arrive as they’re ready, in true Asian sharing style – so expect

a rolling feast rather than a formal three-course progression. And while we couldn’t squeeze in dessert at the time, we were dreaming of it the next morning. TIP: Always leave room.

Sexy Fish’s bar is a show. Expect cocktails that dazzle in both flavour and presentation – ideal for aperitifs, digestifs, or simply sipping while people-watching.

Drinks are on the premium side, but you're not just paying for ingredients – you're buying into an atmosphere, a vibe, and frankly, the bragging rights.

A live DJ adds energy as the evening progresses. Just note: if you're not a fan of loud music, consider visiting on a weeknight rather than the weekend when the beats kick up a notch.

Sexy Fish Manchester is more than just a beautiful restaurant – it’s a destination. Perfect for date nights, big birthdays, girls' dinners or simply when you want to feel fabulous.

The service is on point, the food consistently excellent, and the setting? Total escapism.

Yes, it's indulgent. Yes, it's a little extra. And yes – you deserve it.

Tucked away inside the iconic Arighi Bianchi store in Macclesfield, AB Caffé is a delightful surprise.

I visited on a Friday afternoon with my mum, and it was the perfect end-of -week treat. She absolutely loved it. Mum chose the Beer Battered Haddock and Chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce (£14.95) – the cod was perfectly crispy and light, and the chips were everything you want them to be: crisp on the outside and fluffy within. I opted for the Roast Salmon and Prawn Salad with Marie Rose sauce, a fresh mix of lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and red onion (£13.75), and sipped on a lovely, chilled glass of prosecco. Thailand to Didsbury

The Heartwarming Tale of Ek and Molly’s Thai Culinary Journey

Nestled just off Kingsway in Didsbury, Ek’s Kitchen is a family-run labour of love, where the aromas of Thai basil and lemongrass mingle with the warmth of home. Behind this beloved culinary venture are Ek and Molly, a devoted husband-and-wife team, and their two children, Emily and Oscar, who help give this charming spot its unmistakable family feel.

Rooted in Tradition, Elevated with Passion

Chef Ek brings over 30 years of culinary mastery to the kitchen, having trained in Thailand before refining his skills in London’s vibrant food scene. His dishes—authentic, bold, and elegantly balanced—pay homage to his homeland while embracing the local produce of Greater Manchester. From fragrant green curries to crispy moneybags, each plate is crafted with the precision and soul of a seasoned chef.

But it’s not just about the food— it’s about the story. Molly, ever the welcoming host, ensures guests are treated like friends. Her deep connection to Didsbury and warm hospitality create a setting that’s as memorable as the dishes served.

A Family Affair: The Heart Behind the Hustle

Ek and Molly often speak of their desire to show their children not just how to cook, but how to care about craft, culture, and community. For them, the restaurant isn’t just a business, but a lesson in love, perseverance, and identity passed down at the dinner table.

An Intimate Escape to Thailand in South Manchester

With only 16 seats, the restaurant is intentionally intimate. Diners can watch Chef Ek at work in the open kitchen, where sizzling woks, fragrant steam, and his calm confidence offer a kind of culinary theatre. There’s a sense of closeness between the guests and the food, between the family and the diners—that makes this space unlike anywhere else.

Local Love and a Growing Legacy

Ek’s Kitchen has quietly built a reputation as one of Manchester’s best hidden gems. It’s not unusual to hear guests proclaim the food to be “the best Thai outside of Bangkok.” The restaurant has received glowing praise across platforms, not just for its food, but for its authenticity and the family behind it.

And while awards and accolades are lovely, it’s the repeat visits from neighbours, friends, and even curious foodies from further afield that truly matter to Ek, Molly, Emily, and Oscar. This is their table, and everyone is welcome.

A Future Steeped in Flavour and Family

As the family looks to the future, they’re committed to staying true to their roots. Ek dreams of teaching his children traditional techniques. Molly hopes to add more vegetarian options to the menu. Emily wants to learn to make mango sticky rice, and Oscar—already a budding entrepreneur—is eyeing a lemonade stand out front.

Together, they’re not just serving meals—they’re nurturing a legacy. At Ek’s Kitchen, every bite tells a story. And every story begins with family.

Celebrating two decades in hospitality

It’s 22 years since Alison Hibbert set up By Parallel Events, and she can state with pride that 90% of her engagements are repeat bookings and that many of her professional relationships have morphed into lasting friendships she values and nurtures to this day.

Alison’s two decades in hospitality have earned her a reputation for reliability, originality and delivery. She comes up trumps for every occasion, whether a client is after an intimate dinner for ten or a corporate function for a thousand. You see, Ms. Hibbert can match and adapt her innate practicality and creativity to meet every new challenge in the career she simply loves.

The lasting success of By Parallel Events has been down to Alison Hibbert’s hard graft, both physically and mentally, plus her clear understanding of each client’s needs and budget.

Forward planning is fundamental and the obvious key. So, when prepping for a corporate event or a product launch, consultations will start months in advance, and for a wedding, may even entail years of contact with her complimentary venue finding ser vice thrown in. It’s no small wonder that on the ‘actual day’, Alison can preside calmly ‘in situ’, fully focused on overseeing and coordinating every aspect of the project at hand.

High standards

And to ensure everything goes swimmingly, it is not unheard of for her to remain at a venue from 7 am one morning till 3 am the next day! Only then, with mission accomplished, will she crawl her way home, exhausted but happy and bolstered by the function’s success, if not a tad high too!

You see, her goal is not solely to gain her customers’ approval and satisfaction but to satisfy her own high standards, too.

She smiles, adding,

It makes me laugh a bit knowing that on a job, people see me looking quite ‘cool’ wearing a pretty dress, a drink in one hand and a clipboard in the other! But nine times out of ten, I have changed into that posh frock in the loo just ten minutes before anyone arrives. They don’t see me up ladders at 7 am or cleaning up some not-too -pleasant mess in the early hours! But that is fine and part and parcel of the work I love!’

Events. Its debut ‘gig’ at Daytona Go Karts was a mega tsunami fundraiser graced by supportive local telly ‘soap’ celebs.

Recession and pandemic

She recalls, “I survived the 2008 and 2009 recession and the pandemic, and now many of my clients are corporates and legal professionals – they’re regulars. Presently, there’s far less money available, and in general, formal dinners are ‘out’. But over the years I’ve hired drag queens, actors, stage and screen stars and livened up many a scene with ice cream vans, fish and chip stalls and even a fairground! My event themes have included Bollywood, Moulin Rouge, Willy Wonka, The Greatest Showman and Narnia. My favourite time of year is Christmas, which I start thinking about in August, and for which I last year installed 20 trees around the Lowry Theatre and in town!”

Alison’s first step into the world of hospitality was as a fourteen-year-old waitress in Poynton, and her wages went towards the upkeep of her three horses. Interestingly, she accepted her 6 am stable-start and late-night work as perfectly normal, an attitude which would later stand her in good stead for the long, unsociable hours her career in hospitality and events would demand.

Looking back, on leaving school, Alison had already dabbled with a dismal ten-week foray into social work before enrolling and graduating in Hotel and Catering at Buxton College. Predictably, she was promoted to management in every bar and eatery where she was employed. Alison then transferred to hotel sales, event management and PR till in her early thirties she went solo, founding her own company, By Parallel

Alison has, for 21 years, raised thousands via her ‘It’s not Ascot’ charity event held at the Edwardian Manchester’s Peter Street Kitchen this year, ladies as always donned large hats, wore elegant attire, watched the races via a live link and were beautifully fed and watered. And at different local venues on each first Tuesday of the month, she also runs the Manchester Market Place Business Networking Event.

Ms. Hibbert concludes, ‘I’m never bored. I do enjoy my home, my car, my cats, my lovely friends and my travel- and someone special. Meanwhile, I am, as always, living life to the fullest. This job fi

Kathy Cowell OBE,

“My mantra, and what I tell everyone, is ‘Remember, when you’re asked to do something, always say ‘Yes!’ and then work out how you’ll do it! And above all, always be kind.’

‘Chairman of the Board’

Kathy Cowell has held several Chairman and Non-Executive roles in the health sector in both provider and commissioner organisations. These include Chairman of the East Cheshire NHS Acute Trust, NHS Cluster/PCT Chairman, and Vice Chairman of Warrington Hospital NHS Acute Trust

Current roles of Kathy Cowell OBE, DL include: Deputy Lieutenant (DL) of Cheshire

Member of Manchester Academic Health Science Centre

Chairman of MFT Charity

High Sheriff of Cheshire 2016 – 2017

Kathy Cowell OBE. DL is blessed with abundant leadership qualities, a strong work ethos, an eye for detail, plus a caring nature. Above all, she has the support of her husband John, their two sons and their young families. She could quite well rest perched prettily on her laurels and bask in her own glory, staying home in Wilmslow. But that is not her style. She simply marches on, so much so that pinning her down for an interview can be tricky in itself- but well worth the effort! Kathy is pragmatic, realistic and despite all accolades does not emanate any patronising, ‘do-gooder’ vibes. Instead, she manifests a genuine interest in everything and everyone around her and remains determined to effect change for the better wherever possible. And she succeeds.

Neither a nurse nor a medic nor a university graduate, Kathy’s personality, her impetus and aptitude propelled her over the years from a Cheshire Building Society (CBS) bank arrears clerk to the Chair of the Board of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. This really is a big deal. Its £2.9 billion budget funds ten hospitals across Manchester and two of Trafford’s and Manchester’s local care organisations, employing 28,000 staff and an additional 8,000 who enjoy honorary contracts with the trust. And it is a responsibility Kathy has never shirked.

Looking back, she was always at ease dealing with the general public, good with numbers and related particularly well to the more personal aspects of banking.

She recalls,’ I spent 24 years with Cheshire Building Society and I rose to regional manager, overseeing 800 staff in the mortgage department. I was also the lead executive for Human Resources and for Corporate Social Responsibility and took on the role of its training assistant, though I’d never done training. But the job came up, so I did a presentation about how we train staff to be good employees. And by training people for 2 years, I got to know everyone in the organisation. The principle is that if someone feels valued and looked after, that person will also look after our customers and ultimately be a good employer too. Originally, when Colin Whittle approached me offering me the post of CBS’s HR Director, I refused it because I had

no HR degree. His response was, ‘I have umpteen people in the department with HR degrees, but you bring common sense and leadership.’ So, Kathy acquiesced and took the job. Still impressed by the CBS, now part of Nationwide Building Society, she states,

It bothers me that in Manchester, there are so many extremes. Did you know that if your home is in Hale, you will live 10 years longer than if you live a mere tram journey away in Cheetham Hill? That’s food for thought, isn’t it?”

‘The CBS had always emphasised the human, if not the humane side of banking. Its ethos aligned with my own. We were reminded to always think of the customer, to consider what was best for that customer and what we could do to help that customer if possible, to stay in their house. And anyway, I just loved putting people in a better place.’

“ “

She continues, ‘Nowadays, the ‘big push’ is population health. In Manchester, we have some very deprived communities. So, if you have very little money, it’s far easier and cheaper to buy a white sliced loaf than a granary one, and that is what you do. And to get your children to school, you know as a parent that you have to put shoes on your kids’ feet, so you do. But making those choices can be difficult We have to help and guide people towards making those decisions.

In the late Queen’s 2014 New Year’s Honours List, Kathy Cowell was awarded the OBE for her contribution and service to the communities of Greater Manchester and Cheshire. Taken aback but thrilled, she adds, ‘I had no idea I’d been nominated or by whom! I felt really honoured and humbled and quite overwhelmed as it also makes everyone around me feel good, not just me, but my family, friends and colleagues too! “ I’ve worked in great organisations with some amazing people and met some ordinary people doing the most extraordinary things.

“ “

My mantra, and what I tell everyone, is ‘Remember, when you’re asked to do something, always say ‘Yes!’ and then work out how you’ll do it! And above all, always be kind.’

“I truly believe that music has the power to uplift and unite people. Whether I’m performing, teaching, or running the festival, it all comes back to that spark I first felt as a child.”

Shaping a New Melody for Manchester: Harp Festival 2026 in the Making

Louise Thomson is a versatile and accomplished harpist, with an innovative and virtuosic approach that enables her to explore the instrument’s capabilities to the full. Her exceptional talent has taken her to some of the UK’s most prestigious concert venues, including the Royal Albert Hall, Cardiff ’s St David’s Hall, and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.

She has performed with many of the country’s leading ensembles, including the Hallé, Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra and Manchester Concert Orchestra. Louise has appeared live on BBC Radio 3 and made her television debut on BBC 1’s ‘Heaven and Earth’ show, performing alongside soprano Katherine Jenkins.

She spoke about her journey with the harp: “I first fell in love with the harp as a young girl after seeing a concert. I was completely captivated by the sound, the beauty, the sheer presence of the instrument. That moment set me on a path I’ve followed ever since, and today I feel so lucky to share that passion through performing, teaching, and creating opportunities for others to experience the magic of the harp for themselves.

“After training at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music, I’ve had the privilege of performing in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues and am proud to be a recording artist with Chandos Records. But beyond the stage, what gives me the most joy is teaching and building an inclusive community around this instrument that means so much

to me. I currently teach at Withington Girls’ School, Manchester Grammar School, Chetham’s School of Music and am a visiting professor at the RNCM. When I first started teaching, I had just one pupil — now, in the North West, we have one of the largest and most thriving school-based harp communities in the country. I’m so proud of the brilliant, creative young people I work with every day. They constantly inspire me”. She added,

School ensembles from RNCM, Chetham’s and Withington Girls’ School all performed, alongside a wide range of community and student showcases. The response from audiences and players was overwhelmingly positive.

A huge part of my mission is to make the harp more inclusive. It’s often seen as elite or out of reach, but I want to break down those barriers. That’s what led me to launch the Manchester Harp Festival in 2024 — to bring the UK harp community together in Manchester and showcase everything this instrument can be.

“ “

It’s a weekend of concerts, workshops, competitions and, most importantly, outreach — introducing the harp to those who might never otherwise encounter it.

“The inaugural festival was a dream come true. We welcomed harpists and audiences from across the UK and were honoured to feature Anneleen Lenaerts, Principal Harp of the Vienna Philharmonic, as our headline performer.

“Looking ahead to 2026, we have exciting plans to build on that momentum, including welcoming Mared Emyr Pugh-Evans, the current Royal Harpist to King Charles III, who will perform and share her experience in this prestigious role. We hope she’ll also support our expanded outreach efforts, including working with young people in areas of low arts access.

“I truly believe that music has the power to uplift and unite people. Whether I’m performing, teaching, or running the festival, it all comes back to that spark I first felt as a child. Now I want to pass that spark on — and help others discover just how powerful and joyful the harp can be.

“As we plan for the 2026 Manchester Harp Festival, I’m excited by the possibilities — but also aware that, like many cultural initiatives, it relies on the support of sponsors and partners to bring it to life. If you share our belief in the power of music to inspire, connect and open doors, I would love to hear from you. Together, we can ensure this festival continues to grow and thrive, reaching even more young people, schools and communities across the region”.

The King’s School Set for Tour of a Lifetime Down Under

The King's School's young rugby players are set to shadow the Lions on a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Australia and Malaysia.

Leaving on 13th July, the 35 Senior and Sixth Form pupils and five staff will embark on a thrilling adventure, with King's returning to the land down under for the first time since 2017.

The tour, involving two competitive teams and supported by five experienced staff members, will feature 10 fixtures against top-level opposition. It has been carefully timed to coincide with the prestigious British and Irish Lions Tour, allowing the touring party to attend the first Test match in Brisbane against the Wallabies, marking the first time in school history that a King’s tour has included a Lions fixture.

Their Australian journey begins on the Gold Coast, where the students will embrace surf lessons, water park visits and acclimatise to the Southern Hemisphere in style. The squad will then travel to Sydney, taking on some of the country’s most prestigious rugby schools from the famed GPS circuit, including St. Joseph’s, Gregory Terrace and Nudgee College. Beyond the pitch, the itinerary is packed with iconic experiences: a visit to Bondi Beach, a jet boating tour of Sydney Harbour and a night at the NRL to watch the Sydney Roosters in action.

On Friday 2 May, the Leverhulme Woodlands - a dedicated on-site outdoor learning space for pupils across the Foundation - were officially opened within Bolton School's grounds.

Located at the perimeter of the School site, towards the top of Tudor Avenue, the redevelopment of the Woodlands was made possible thanks to the generosity of Lord Leverhulme’s Charitable Trust and the Friends of Bolton School.

The final leg of the tour takes the team to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where they will face a nationally selected Barbarians XV. Cultural exploration remains a key part of the journey, with visits to the Batu Caves and the Petronas Twin Towers rounding off the tour.

King's Head of Rugby Giles Hetherington, who is missing the trip to be with his wife as they await their second baby, said: "The King's School is proud to offer its students a truly global sporting and cultural experience, one that will undoubtedly create memories to last a lifetime."

and extra-curricular use by pupils from across the Foundation, and particularly those in the Primary Division.

The Leverhulme Woodlands were officially opened by Mr George Apsion, a Governor of the School, great-greatgrandson of the first Lord Leverhulme. Mr Apsion is also a representative of the family Trust, which was the principal donor to the Woodlands, which will stand as a permanent commemoration of the centenary of Lord Leverhulme’s death.

Mr Apsion was joined at the opening by representatives of the Friends of Bolton School, whose fundraising at parent events had made a further contribution to the redevelopment; by the Head of Foundation, Philip Britton, MBE; by the Heads of the Primary, Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions, Sue Faulkner, Nic Ford and Lynne Kyle; and by other Governors and Former Governors of the School.

In his speech to “cut the ribbon”, Mr Apsion recalled his great-greatgrandfather’s abiding love of the outdoors, recollecting the outdoor bedroom in which he slept year-round at Rivington, and his staunch belief in the benefits of physical activity.

Mr Apsion observed that the benefits of outdoor learning for pupils’ mental and physical health were manifold, and that the Woodlands would enable even the youngest children in the Foundation to experience those benefits whilst developing their relationship with nature.

The redevelopment of the Woodlands was overseen by the School’s Estates Department, and in his speech, Mr Apsion paid particular tribute to Mr Dave Laskey and Mr Ian Clarke from that team, whose efforts ensured the project was completed to such an impeccable standard.

Project week

Project Week is a highlight of the academic year for students in U3 to L5 (11-15 years old) at St Bede’s College.

Designed to promote teamwork, creativity, and independent learning, it offers pupils the chance to step outside the classroom and engage with realworld experiences. Each small group, made up of around 12 students, is assigned a different area of Manchester to explore. These areas range from the historic Northern Quarter and the vibrant Curry Mile to the industrial heritage of Castlefield, or even a visit to Chester Zoo. Each location provides a unique lens through which students can investigate themes such as community, culture, regeneration, and the environment.

During the outing, the students explore their assigned area, guided by a set of enquiry-based questions developed

with support from teachers. They may conduct interviews with locals, collect data through surveys, photograph key landmarks, or study how the area has changed over time. The goal is to build a compelling narrative or analysis based on their findings

The final two days of the week are spent back at school, where students work collaboratively to produce a creative output. This could be a podcast, a visual presentation, or even a short video documentary. They learn how to edit audio, design slides, and structure engaging content. Students take the lead in both content and presentation style with full ownership of the result, hoping to be selected as winners in their year group.

The week ends with a showcase event where each group presents their work to peers and staff. It’s a rewarding opportunity for students to develop confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of their city. Project Week is not only a celebration of learning but also of teamwork, intellectual curiosity, and the voices of young people discovering the world around them.

Activities Week 2025 at The Manchester Grammar School

During the last week of June, the usual timetable was suspended as every pupil took part in a week-long activity of their choice, selected from a diverse programme of over 30 options. Approximately 450 boys embarked on residential trips, including camps across the Lake District, as well as various sports tours. Others remained closer to home, engaging in a wide range of activities in and around school and Manchester — from water sports, drama and cookery courses to golf and other enriching experiences.

Legally Blonde at WGS

The stage at Withington Girls’ School shone with charm, humour and energy as students brought the hit show Legally Blonde The Musical JR to life in a dazzling school production that was pink, powerful and positively unforgettable.

Directed by Head of Drama, Mrs Berry and Director of Music, Mrs Sargent, the show followed Elle Woods in what begins as a quest for love but quickly transforms into a journey of selfdiscovery, empowerment and staying true to oneself. “With themes of resilience, friendship and challenging stereotypes, it’s a story that encourages young people to believe in themselves and support one another – values clearly embodied by everyone involved in the production,” said Mrs Berry.

This was truly a whole-school endeavour, with students from across year groups

and staff from multiple departments collaborating to bring the show to life.

“From the first rehearsal, the cast and crew poured their passion, creativity and dedication into every moment. Whether on stage or working behind the scenes, in lighting, sound, costume and stage management, their enthusiasm for storytelling was in abundance. What stands out most is the personal growth, new friendships and sheer joy that blossomed throughout the process –memories for a lifetime have been made,” added Mrs Sargent.

The production featured two talented casts, each bringing their own flair and interpretation to the roles. From highenergy dance numbers to heartfelt solos, every performance was delivered with confidence and charisma. The ensemble’s chemistry and commitment created a vibrant atmosphere that

captivated audiences from start to finish. A total of four performances were staged - three evening shows and a special matinee attended by local primary schools. The younger audience members were thrilled to meet the cast afterwards, eagerly collecting autographs, sharing in the excitement and spreading the joy even further.

With its inspiring message and seamless execution, Legally Blonde proved that Withington really is the place where girls shine.

Engineering Cadets Earn Prestigious Award

Engineering Cadets pupils from Stockport Grammar School enjoyed an inspiring visit to the University of Liverpool to celebrate the completion of their Chemical Engineering project as part of the Industrial Cadets programme.

Over the past few months, the students have worked closely with their mentor company, MEL, on a challenging and highly technical task: redesigning a storage tank system used in zirconium manufacturing.

Their aim was to develop an effective agitation system to prevent slurry from settling – a real-world issue faced in industrial chemical processes.

Throughout the project, the cadets demonstrated impressive teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and a growing understanding of engineering principles, from design and modelling to practical application.

The Celebration and Awards Day recognised the students’ dedication and creativity, as they proudly received the prestigious Industrial Cadets Gold Award — a testament to the depth of their effort and learning.

In addition, the team was thrilled to win a special prize for Most Innovative Project, setting them apart from other groups across the programme.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was receiving personal praise from the Head of Research and Development at Luxfer, who commended their ingenuity and the professional quality of their work.

This project has not only broadened the cadets’ knowledge of chemical engineering and industrial processes but has also given them a valuable taste of working with industry professionals on real-life engineering challenges.

The experience has been both rewarding and inspiring, and it has given the students greater confidence and motivation as they consider their future paths in STEM careers.

Head, Mrs Sarah Capewell said:

"We are incredibly proud of our Engineering Cadets. Their creativity, commitment, and professionalism throughout this project have been outstanding. Winning the Most Innovative Project award is a fantastic achievement and a true reflection of their talent and teamwork. They are a credit to the school and to the future of engineering."

Worsley’s Padel 16 announces successful first phase in local school partnership

Worsley’s newest padel facility, Padel 16, located at Worsley Sports Club, has recorded a successful trial run in delivering professional coaching sessions to students at local Bridgewater School as part of the curriculum lesson. The first phase of the partnership saw three sessions delivered to year 10 students as part of their mandatory 45-minute PE lesson, with plans to now expand in the coming school year.

Owned by professional footballer Fabio Borini, working alongside local businessman Anthony Bingham, Padel 16’s mission is to restore and transform local sports clubs, offering communities a refreshed space to connect, compete and socialise.

Anthony Bingham, Director at Padel 16, said: “Partnering with Bridgewater School is the perfect next step in fulfilling Padel’s ambitions to respond to community wants and needs. The partnership adds

real value to what we’re doing in the Worsley community, involving local businesses and schools to feel included in this up-and-coming sport.

“The next phase of this partnership is very exciting. Not only will we be expanding the padel sessions across more year groups, but we also have plans to offer ice baths and breathwork sessions, further broadening the students’ knowledge on health and wellbeing. We’re actively looking for more schools to collaborate with across Greater Manchester to really make a difference to the young people in our communities.”

Mrs Zoe Hewitt, Head of PE at Bridgewater School, said: “At Bridgewater School, we are always looking for innovative ways to enhance our extensive co-curricular and enrichment programme. Partnering with Padel 16 has given our students the chance to

experience something both new and exciting. As one of the fastest-growing and most engaging sports, padel has really captured their interest and enthusiasm.

“We feel incredibly fortunate to have such fantastic facilities right on our doorstep, and the team at Padel 16 have been outstanding in the way they’ve supported and inspired our students. It’s been wonderful to see them embrace the sport so quickly, and we hope it’s something they’ll continue to enjoy both in and beyond school for years to come.”

Ask the Expert

Scott Clay

Director of the Premier service at Together Scott joined property finance experts Together in 2017 and has spearheaded the Premier proposition to support those who need a more personalised and tailored experience from their lender. With over 19 years’ financial ser vices experience, he’s worked with private clients, Hedge Funds, Insurance and Financial Advisory businesses.

I’m self-employed and have been refused a large mortgage by the high street banks. What are my options?

You’re probably not being rejected because you can’t afford the mortgage. Traditional high street lenders can have tight criteria, allowing them to offer lower rates due to lower risk. They may struggle with an income that’s a little more complex, such as having multiple income streams or irregular payment frequencies. Lenders like Together can take a wider view of your whole income and make an affordability decision based on common sense.

I’ve found the perfect home to buy, but my house hasn’t sold yet. Is there anything you can do?

Yes, you could consider a short-term regulated bridging loan. This effectively turns you into a cash buyer and allows you to purchase the new home before yours has sold. You’ll repay the loan when your current home sells. It’s not something most banks offer, but it’s something we’ve been doing at Together for 40 years.

I’ve secured a great price on a property, but I need to complete it by a tight deadline. My bank could take months!

As a relationship lender, we pride ourselves on finding solutions. In fact, we’ve funded a £1.5m mortgage in 8 working days. Our clients are often business owners and entrepreneurs who love getting a deal, especially on property. Being able to complete quickly is favoured by sellers and estate agents, and it’s a great way to secure a home at a reduced price.

Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Jason Slack

Jason Slack is Head of The King’s School, a co-educational day school for pupils aged 3 – 18. With a new 80-acre campus in Prestbury, it offers state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor learning facilities and is currently ranked in the Top 5 Independent Schools for academic results in the North West (The Sunday Times).

What's a key skill every student should have?

Resilience is more important now than it has ever been. Being able to stay focused in the face of challenge and stick at things when the going gets tough is essential to being a good student and for life in general. Resilience is one of the ‘learning habits’ that we actively focus on developing within our pupils, starting with our Forest School lessons in the infants and continuing all the way through to helping our Sixth Formers get ready for life at university.

What is a recent highlight of your role?

We have just had our Year 13 Leavers’ Ball, and seeing these remarkable young adults and their journeys of personal growth and transformation makes me feel really proud. They have all contributed so much to our school community and now head off to start a new chapter equipped with the character and skills they’ll need.

What makes you most proud?

Moving the School to our new campus in the middle of a pandemic back in

2020 is something that I’ll always be incredibly proud of and which demonstrated, by example, resilience as a key skill for everyone.

I’m also incredibly proud of the accolades we’ve received since moving here, including for our Sports provision (ranked 32nd in the UK’s Top 200 Sporting Schools) and our pupil Wellbeing Award.

BEAT THE HEAT OutdOors

AT time of writing, we are in the middle of a heatwave. Of course it’s entirely likely it’ll be 12 degrees and raining on the day you’re reading this, but I doubt this heatwave will be our last. As an outdoor enthusiast, I don’t want extreme weather events to spoil my fun, so here’s some tips on how to enjoy outdoor pursuits even when it’s sweltering.

Location

Beer gardens in this weather can be a nightmare of crowds and inescapable heat. Even if all you want to do is drink wine and recline, why not move the party to a shady park, a forest or anywhere on water where it’ll be several precious degrees cooler.

Activity

Sometimes the idea of moving a single muscle is just too much – but if you pick your action cleverly, you’ll still be able to keep active without boiling over. Swimming, canoeing, paddleboarding and other open water sports are growing in popularity and even in big cities there are plenty of public spots to participate. Even cycling isn’t as hard

going as you might think, because as you move you create your own air flow, which can be a blessed relief.

Timing

There’s never a better time or incentive to get up and out early. In the height of summer, you’ll never regret ditching the lie-in and going out and about super early when it’s coolest. There’s few hobbies you can’t do before 11am, then if you get the chance to have a midday siesta you’ll have earned it.

Hydration

It sounds obvious, but there’s more to staying safely hydrated than just drinking absolutely loads of water. Yes, you should carry more than you think you’ll

need, but also drink before you feel thirsty, and get hold of some electrolyte tablets which can work wonders to stave off dehydration headaches.

Protection

I’d say Factor 50 is an absolute essential. The health risks on extremely hot days are no joke, but I wear it all year round just because there’s nothing better for keeping at bay the signs of skin ageing. After the sunscreen, the hat with a brim and of course some proper 100% UV protection sunglasses, also consider what your clothes are made from. Some man-made fibres turn into a clingy mess in the heat, while natural materials like cotton and merino can feel heavensent.

DAY FEVER

Because life’s too short to save the dancing for after dark

If you ever thought clubbing was just for the under-25s stumbling home at 3 am, think again. Day Fever, the unstoppable daytime disco dreamt up by actor Vicky McClure, her husband Jonny Owen, and pals including Jon McClure of Reverend & The Makers.

Born from a WhatsApp chat and now heading to 24 towns and cities in September, Day Fever brings affordable, joy-filled clubbing into the daylight hours.

“The first one sold out in two seconds,” Vicky beams. “We did Nottingham, then Sheffield, then Merthyr and Cardiff, and it just flew from there.”

It all started with a simple idea. “Jonny just said, ‘Have you ever seen those bars in town during the day? They’re rammed!’” laughs Jon. “We were like, come on then, let’s do it, and it went nuts.”

Vicky’s voice lifts when she talks about the kind of people turning up to dance: “It’s mothers and daughters, friends reconnecting, people on chemo, people grieving. These are your nurses, your cleaners, your teachers. These are the people keeping the world spinning, and

now they’ve got somewhere to let go and feel joy.”

Inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword here; it’s baked into the experience. “We’ve had people in wheelchairs come up on stage, and the crowd goes wild. It’s electric. We want it to be accessible to everyone,” says Vicky, visibly moved. “It makes your hair stand on end.”

While you might catch a familiar face on the decks, Jonny, Vicky, or even Jon’s wife, Laura, most Day Fever events are led by local DJs. “We’ve been really selective,” Vicky explains. “They know their crowd; they know what their people want to hear. And they’re smashing it.”

And yes, music is taken very seriously. “There’s a loose structure,” Jon explains. “Bit of Northern Soul to kick off, disco, 80s bangers, 90s dance, a singalong, maybe some indie... but we always have Whitney. If Vicky’s there, it’s the law.”

Regional pride plays a part, too. “Manchester goes mad for Oasis, Nottingham’s got its favourites, and we make sure to tap into that local energy,” says Vicky. “It’s about community, about people being together.”

Day Fever deliberately keeps things cheap. Vicky says. “We’ve always wanted it to be affordable. A night out can be £100 easy. We didn’t want this to be that.” Jon adds, “Jonny said from day one it’s for ordinary people. Families, people with kids. We’re not here to rip people off.”

It’s not uncommon to see Vicky herself dancing on stage with partygoers, selfies flying and smiles everywhere.

With festivals like Splendour and Reverend & The Makers’ 20th anniversary show in Sheffield this summer, things are scaling up – but slowly. “We’ve had offers to take it abroad, but we’re being really careful,” Vicky says. “It’s only 18 months old, it feels like a decade, but we want to make sure we look after what we’ve built.”

They’ve even announced their own Day Fever festival at Nottingham’s Arboretum on 23rd August. “We’ve got loads of ideas,” she teases. “But for now, we’re just enjoying this moment. It’s simple, and it works.”

Day Fever isn’t just a disco; it’s a dose of pure happiness. The next Manchester date is 20th September 2025 at Manchester New Century Hall For all other venues and dates, visit day-fever.com but don’t wait too long, as they’re selling fast Follow DAY FEVER on @DAYFEVERUK

Some might say Oasis don’t belong in such exalted company as the Beatles and the Sex Pistols… but they’d be wrong.

No, not because of their music, which pales in comparison with that of the Beatles, whose influence they’ve not so much merely stated as tattooed on their bodies. Nor is it their tiresome reputation for controversy, which can’t hold a candle to the shock and awe of the Sex Pistols’ God Save the Queen having to be kept off the number one spot in 1977’s Silver Jubilee Week by everyone from the BBC to MI5!

But what Oasis does have in megawatts is power. The power to wake up the bored, indifferent, disaffected and despairing, and change, however briefly or fleetingly, but in many cases, permanently, their lives and their aspirations. Because without Oasis, many of those lives would have remained dreary, despondent and unfulfilled. And isn’t that a real power? To change someone’s life for the better? The Beatles had it, of course, and so too, although in a much different vein, did the Sex Pistols. So, it’s no coincidence, of course, that those two earlier bands were the prime influences on Liam and Noel.

But there’s more to Oasis than some mere karaoke tribute act or Stars in Their Eyes pastiche. Which is not to say The Brothers Grimm haven’t played up their influences, perhaps even over-egged their cultural puddings; in fact, very often, they wore their hearts on their sleeves so blatantly you’d fear for the patient’s wellbeing!

So theirs is a very special power indeed, despite their musical limitations (yes, Noel is a very good guitarist as well as a capable songwriter, but whether he’s ‘great’ at either is debatable), and great indebtedness to their influences (and yes, Liam has a terrific voice, but he’s no Johnny Rotten in the revolutionary stakes), they survive and thrive beyond belief to this day. How? But, more to the point, why?

Why them, and not Blur? Their Britpop nemesis, who may have won the battle back in 1995 to get to Number One, but

were, as time and distance have so crushingly proved, thrashed in the long war of both sales and lasting influence, and of, indeed, true and everlasting love.

Britpop couldn’t have existed without Oasis, because all the other supposed combatants in that war of domestic pop were merely cannon fodder caught in the unwitting crossfire between Blur (University attenders all) and Oasis (School leavers at age 16 to a boy).

And most of that crop of bands who trailed in Oasis’ supernova slipstream were comprised of middle-class kids who not only looked different to Oasis, but, crucially, spoke and sounded as if they came from a Britain unrecognisable to the one in which Burnage, and its thousands of equivalents all over the country, resided. So, yes, we’re talking Class. That great instrument for identifying, labelling, and compartmentalising every aspect of life in Britain. Different class. They were from a different class from the others. A class that hadn’t had a voice or a cypher or a light shone on them since the Sex Pistols. And the wait for such a voice to emerge had been a long one, so when it was finally heard, the resulting joy and exhilaration that erupted upon its arrival was unlike anything since the seemingly out of nowhere explosion of the Fabs more than thirty years earlier.

So, was it just class that marked them out as different to all the others who fell by the wayside? Definitely…well, maybe. Because, of course, the music matters, too, and though Oasis weren’t pretending to push any musical

envelopes, they did what they did exceptionally well. And what they did was make music for people who needed a release from their everyday humdrum existence. For the people who love Oasis the most are those who needed them the most.

And, yes, their music is melodic, if a little basic, but powerfully anthemic; like football terrace chants, it’s tailor-made for repetition and adoption as a sign of belonging to ‘something’. Anything. Other than being alone and feeling hopelessly lost. Oasis was an anchor for those adrift from the rest of society, and their songs were easy to cling to. And just as the Pistols did, Oasis made music that could be easily emulated, and so their followers went out and bought cheap guitars and learnt to play them, and perhaps even went and formed bands that bore more than a passing resemblance to Oasis. Just as they themselves had been influenced by the Beatles and the Sex Pistols to go out and form their band.

But, of course, the proof is in the pudding, and Oasis’s standing today, as they play to hundreds of thousands in their home city of Manchester and then many more thousands all around the world, provides compulsive proof of their power. Liam and Noel’s journey from Burnage to world domination is a reminder that salvation is still possible within the confines of a three and a half minute pop song.

I guess we just needed a little time to wake up…

MIL-SPEC TECH

AS a self-appointed spokesman for outdoor dads everywhere, I can confirm that if a gadget is “military specification”, we’re more likely to buy it. Here’s a round-up of some of the best tactical and survival gear that we civilians can get our hands on.

Leatherman MUT multitool

Sure, there are cheaper and simpler multitools and penknives out there, and I’ll grudgingly admit I’ll never need a bolt override tool for maintaining an Army-issue rifle, but there’s plenty on this top-ofthe-range Leatherman that I’ll use day-to-day. From super hardened pliers and wire cutters to the perfect hammer end for bashing in tent pegs, this is a must in my camping kit.

£229.95, uk.leatherman.com

Garmin Tactix smartwatch

When cycling, training, navigating or camping, I never leave home without my Garmin Fenix smartwatch – it has almost everything from fitness tracking to Ordnance Survey maps and weather apps. For a few extra quid, though, the military Tactix version might turn the head of the Rambo wannabe. From its indestructible titanium case to the solar charging that allows an astonishing run time of 37 days in smartwatch mode, it also includes features like a stealth mode, kill switch, night vision compatibility, and jumpmaster mode, which are not typically found in the Fenix models.

From £1,189.99, garmin.com

Nitecore EDC29 torch

There are torches, then there are tactical torches. To put things in perspective, the torch in the cupboard under your stairs might have up to 50 lumens, and that’s plenty bright enough to do a meter reading. This one has a retina-ripping 6,500! The EDC in the name stands for “Everyday Carry” – a reference to the essentials that survival experts recommend keeping on your person so you’re prepared for deployment in the most hostile environments. I won’t need this in Stockport, but I want it.

£108.95, nitecore.co.uk

Rite in the Rain mini bolt-action pen

There are a lot of practical uses for something so simple as a pen that genuinely works in less-than-perfect conditions, and this one is endlessly reliable. The bolt-action is a nod to the military origins of the technology, so you can feel like Arnie hunting the Predator in the jungle when you are in fact doing your shopping list in a rainy car park.

BACK IN FASHION

AS I sit here resplendent in a voluminous extra-wide trouser, I’m nagged by the horror of growing rumours that skinny jeans are making a comeback. At my age, this is troubling. When I start seeing these box-pleat Japanese hakama pants in every high street window, am I going to have to revert to disco-tight hosepipes just to stay ahead of the crowd?

Car design trends are no less cyclical. In the 90s, thanks to the likes of the fire-breathing Volvo 850R and Audi’s enduring Avant models, estate cars were cool. Then suddenly, everyone wanted SUVs and the world filled up with off-roaders that never went off road.

Today, the pendulum is swinging back again. People wanting to shift kids, dogs and luggage are starting to decide that they don’t necessarily need the extra weight and consumption that comes with a mud-plugger.

BMW, for one, is saying “I told you so.” It never abandoned its Touring models, even in recent years when they only accounted for a fraction of sales. Since 1987 when the first 3 Series estate came out, BMW has been a stalwart of the

premium wagon, and the latest range has got us asking: Is this the greatest estate car in the world?

The one we’re looking at is the sixth generation 5 Series Touring – the i5 M60 xDrive in particular. The “i” means it’s all-electric, the “M” is the unmistakable sporting badge of the fastest variants, and the “x” means it’s all wheel drive.

Practicality is assured, with a luggage compartment volume that can be expanded from 570 to up to 1,700 litres. And comfort goes without saying – there’s luxury vegan upholstery as standard (leather is SO out in 2025), plus clever gadgetry like the Bowers & Wilkins sound system and curved interactive display.

But anyone paying a hundred grand for the top end M version is first and foremost going to want to know how fast it goes. Rest assured that’s taken care of. A mind-bending 601 horsepower propels this not insubstantial vehicle from zero to 62mph in under four seconds. And since it’s a BMW, you can bet it corners, handles and thrills the driver just as you’d expect from its richly deserved reputation.
