Artist Statement
Refuge

Finding refuge seems paramount to me these days. All over the world and in our own land, people are seeking refuge. Refuge from war, from climate change, from the news cycle that seems only ever to bring news of some fresh horror or disaster. Thankfully the need for me is less about safety and more about sanctuary. I am just one of many who find their refuge or sanctuary in the natural world and in being near, in or on the ocean. How the light falls on the surface, how the eye rests and where the mind goes to find peace … These are the questions that I can explore whilst on the ocean and then further download when I head back into my little studio to mix the paint. These new works continue the journey of exploration and wonder at how the ocean works, and how it works on our psyche. My hope is that they move the viewer and offer respite; a place for the eye and the heart to rest in these difficult times.
