NATALIE ANDERSON
For better or worse, I am deeply affected by the goings on in the world. So once again painting becomes a refuge and anchors me both in gratitude and the peace. Something that seems so precious right now.
These works are my ode to the familiar, even adored places that I visit again and again, surrounding my home in the Barrabool Hills. The places that give me stability and keep me grounded whilst still inspiring awe in each new light and season.
‘To be a wanderer and to be home’ in this beautiful part of the world, must surely be the ultimate blessing. The comfort and predictability of being anchored in place is something that I value very highly as the daughter of a minister who frequently moved, family in tow.
I changed schools five times as a child and remember longing to stay in one place. Even as a very young child I remember wanting with all my heart to hang on to the ‘feel’ of a place I had grown to love – to imprint it on my consciousness so that I could carry it with me when the inevitable time to move on, arrived.
So it is through this lens that these new paintings might be viewed. I’m still practising ‘imprinting’; still making sure I secure the essence of place within me by visiting and revisiting - then heading back to the studio and painting them.
Compositionally, I’ve used orientation to emphasize vastness and silence: drawing the eye skyward to breathe in the expansiveness of atmosphere, and outward across the languid horizontal of the ocean at dawn.

I also return to the sailor’s perspective — looking over the side of the boat as water dances to avoid the bow, the horizon tilting as the boat heels against the wind.
As always, I am most interested in the quality of light as it grows and fades – dawn, days end, seasons, the firsts, the lasts- a moment that slips quietly into another, captured and held … the first frost, the straw coloured Barrabool hills in late summer, the ocean at dawn, heading home, coming in.
Looking back, perhaps I am still trying to hold onto something through painting— to imprint, to remember, to stay. Whatever the case, I think the younger me would be glad to know that she finally found a place to drop anchor.
