A MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIP
“ One Faith. Many Voices. United in Mission. Dear Salesian Family, We are celebrating a Jubilee Year—a special time of grace, forgiveness, and spiritual renewal. This year’s Jubilee theme revolves around a “Pilgrimage of Hope.” According to Pope Francis, hope is not merely human optimism or wishful thinking; it is a profound confidence in God’s love and faithfulness—a gift given through the Holy Spirit. This hope is rooted in the resurrection of Christ and is meant to sustain believers even in the most difficult times. Today, we witness firsthand the harsh realities of our world: war, oppression, and destruction persist, seemingly unchecked. Falsehood and ignorance continue to shape the course of events. Greed and selfishness remain powerful driving forces behind many of the world’s evils, while injustice and prejudice continue to thrive. As disciples of Christ, followers of Don Bosco, and Salesian educators, we are called to be beacons of hope for the young—and through education, to cultivate in them a hope for the world. Salesian College Preparatory is a place where we, as fellow “pilgrims of hope,” walk alongside our students on their journey to becoming the people God created them to be. We support them as they pursue their dreams— whether they aspire to be scholars, doctors, teachers, or leaders in any field. But most importantly, we guide them to become people called by God to be agents of hope, making a difference in the world. May the spirit of St. John Bosco continue to guide us in all that we do. And may we, through our work of educating the young, instill in each of them a lasting hope for the future.

Learning Together Through Exploration Exploring Monterey Bay: A Journey of Curiosity and Connection Each spring, what began as a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium has grown into an immersive journey blending science, adventure, and friendship. Monterey Bay becomes a living classroom where students connect with nature—and each other—by exploring tide pools, observing endangered sea otters, and studying ecosystems. Next stop: Elkhorn Slough. There, students illustrated how biodiversity sustains life by studying seals, seabirds, and otters. Every encounter highlighted the delicate balance of nature and the vital role each species plays.

St. Anthony Marks 75 Years Celebrating a Legacy of Art and Community St. Anthony’s Church recently celebrated an extraordinary milestone, its 75th Anniversary! At the heart of this milestone was Dr. Katie Osenga, whose work Reawakened in Us Blessed Hope captures the spirit of St. Anthony through love, humility, and generosity. More than a painting, it serves as a spiritual invitation, encouraging all who see it to open their hearts, lift their eyes, and embrace the Hope that guides our Salesian community. Dr. Osenga’s creation marks a personal milestone. MOMENTS THAT BRING US TOGETHER Career Day 2025 A special tradition that happens just once every three years came to life on March 7! Over 80 professionals — including alumni and parents of alumni — returned to campus to share their stories and inspire the next generation of Salesians.

Homecoming 2024: Salesian Spirit, Pride, and Community
One Conversation can Spark a Lifetime of Possibilities. Workshops about healthcare, engineering, sports industry, and more helped students explore a wide range of career paths while hearing honest advice and insights for career readiness. Lively conversions left students filled with new perspectives and a deeper sense of possibility for their futures. Career Day reflected Salesian’s mission to support students every step of the way, from building a strong foundation in high school to inspiring confidence into future careers.
60th Annual Crab Feed The 60th Annual Crab Feed was a joyful celebration of tradition and community as 634 friends, family, alumni, and staff gathered for two unforgettable nights filled with laughter, reunion, and plenty of fresh crab. Together, we raised roughly $67,000 while guests enjoyed exciting raffles, our first-ever silent auction, and the chance to honor Beth and Mark Rietdorf for their 25 years of volunteer service leading the Crab Feed. What a homecoming to remember! On October 5th Salesian faced St. Patrick-St. Vincent Catholic High school in the big Homecoming football game. Students, families, alumni, and friends came together to cheer, reconnect, and celebrate our community. A special shoutout to the alumni tent volunteers who helped raise $125 in Salesian swag. Homecoming perfectly showcased our traditions and the memories we create together and we cannot wait to see you at our next Homecoming game.
34th Annual Golf Tournament A hole-in-one for Salesian! The 34th Annual Golf Tournament was held at the beautiful Richmond Golf Club. Your generosity through playing, sponsoring, and bidding directly benefits our students and makes a lasting difference. We are grateful to all our sponsors. Thanks to you, two classrooms now have brand-new chairs and desks, creating a more comfortable and inspiring space for our students to learn and thrive. We hope you’ll be a part of the upcoming 35th Annual Golf Tournament.

Pride Accomplishment
The Pride wrapped up an outstanding 2024–25 season, going 23– 11, undefeated in theTCAL Rock, and finishing as NorCal Division 2-runner up - just one game shy of the State Championship. Led by seniors Janiya and Jamia Sawyer, Vanessa Parilla, the team’s resilience and talent set the stage for even more success ahead. The Pride showed resilience, skill, and heart. Their playoff journey was nothing short of epic. Finished as theNorCal Division 2 runner up.

Our football team charged through the 2024 season with an 11-1 record, going undefeated in league and non-league play at 10-0. They opened the NCS playoffs with a commanding 42-18 win over Mt. Diablo High School before a hard-fought 27-36 semifinal loss to Sonoma Valley capped an incredible run.

The 2024–25 sports year wrapped up with a season full of unforgettable moments, remarkable achievements, and the kind of dedication that defines true champions. Our student-athletes gave it their all, supported by coaches who inspired excellence every step of the way.

The girls softball team captured the TCAL Division Championship, showcasing talent and teamwork all season. Their impressive performance and dedication set the tone for another exciting year ahead.
Track and Field Track and Field shined this season with multiple athletes qualifying for North Coast Section competition. Highlighting the success, Barry Traylor claimed the league championship title for long jump.
Cross Country Cross Country had a strong season, showing grit and consistency on the course. Leading the way was standout runner Nestor Alvarado.
Boys Basketball
Boys Tennis
The Salesian Boys Basketball Team finished another stellar season at 27-4, winning the TCAL-Rock Championship over rival St. Mary’s, placing runner-up in the NCS Open Division, and advancing to the Northern California Open Division semifinals. Ranked #92 nationally by MaxPreps, the Pride return a talented core led by Carlton Perrilliat, Isaiah Davis, and Elias Obenyah, setting the stage for another exciting season.
The team wrapped up the league play with a balanced .500 record, showcasing steady growth and determination throughout the season.
Girls Soccer Girl’s soccer won the TCAL Stone Division last season, showcasing skill, teamwork, and determination through every match. Their hard-fought victories and strong season set the stage for even more success in the year ahead.
From Pride to College Pride From the classroom to the court, Salesian athletes put in the work - and it shows, with commitments to universities such as: Yale University, Dominican University, San Diego State University. A Field of Dreams Thanks to the William G. Irwin Foundation and a few dedicated alumni, we’re proud to unveil a new turf field—a lively space for sports, PE, rallies, and community events. Replacing the old field, it will host football, soccer, and other sports—and, most importantly, serve as a designated gathering spot for our Disaster Response protocol and community organizations. This field embodies our mission to develop well-rounded students in St. John Bosco’s spirit—a place to play, grow, and belong.
Our New Solar Energy System In a bold step toward sustainability, a generous alumni donor made it possible to install a brand-new solar panel system on campus. This system marks a major milestone in our journey to become better stewards. Using clean, renewable energy, we minimize our environmental impact, reduce expenses, and channel savings back into enriching student programs and academic success. This commitment honors our responsibility to build a sustainable future for generations to come.

From Film Set to Winner’s Circle:
The Incredible Journey of Librado Barocio ‘77 Our Director of Development had the opportunity to speak with Librado Barocio ’77 about his incredible achievement this past July—winning the Breeders’ Cup! Fresh off a call with the New York Times, Librado still takes time to connect with his Salesian Community. He fondly remembers playing football and being the first team to make it to the North Coast Section finals. Salesian’s former football coach, Dan “Shag” Shaughnessy inspired him to believe in himself and chase his dreams. After his days on the Salesian campus, he went on to play football at UCLA, with aspirations of playing in the NFL. Graduating from UCLA, with a degree in Film, he had many other interests and went on to pursue them - that is where horses came into the picture. His love for racing spawned from time spent at Golden Gate Fields, just 15 minutes away from Salesian. He used money earned from his other endeavors to purchase a foal, Lovesick Blues. He discovered a hidden gem in the underdog horse because Librado sees himself as an underdog too—and together, they reached the pinnacle of the sport. Over the past four years, he has written an extraordinary story—rising from the bottom to the very top. Reflecting on his Breeders Cup win, has been noted as saying, “We’re gamblers. You gotta swing the bat if you want to hit the grand slam.” And fun fact: Librado is a proud alum, alongside many other of his family members.
Brotherhood That Lasts a Lifetime Matt Martella ‘86
The Development Department recently caught up with alumnus Matt Martella, who shared an update on his life since graduation. He earned his undergraduate degree from Saint Mary’s College and later completed an MBA at Golden Gate University. He began his career with United Parcel Service before transitioning into software and high-tech sales. Over the next 15 years, he led global teams in advertising and digital media before retiring from the industry three years ago.Today, he serves as an adjunct professor at Appalachian State University in North Charlotte. He stays active by hiking, running, golfing, and traveling the world—most recently climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania! Matt credits his time at Salesian with shaping many values that have guided him throughout his career and personal life. His most lasting memory is the lifelong brotherhood he built with his classmates in an environment defined by inclusiveness and close connections with both peers and teachers.

“My Salesian ‘brothers’ came from all parts of the Bay Area with different backgrounds, but we remain very close,” Matt reflects. “We’ll forever share the Salesian bond we built during high school.”
