Principal Your child now takes their place alongside over 7,000 proud Salesian alumni across the nation and around the world that have been shaped by the charism of St. John Bosco. Our co-curricular program will introduce students to a variety of clubs and activities that will enable your child to meet new friends and become an integral member of the Salesian community. Our Campus Ministry program will provide service learning opportunities and cultivate the spiritual soul of your son or daughter. President Welcome to the Salesian family! Your child is about to embark on their journey to become a Salesian for life — we are in this together now! We genuinely care about each and every one of our students. You will find that our faculty, staff and administration will make themselves present with our students throughout their high school journey. We are a family, rich with diversity. Many great things are happening here on campus. Our students have begun to enjoy fascinating experiments in our new third-floor STEM classrooms. Our elevator is now finished increasing accessibility to our building and its three floors. We have many improvements on the drawing board; some that will be seen and some that will improve our infrastructure. In August you will receive a letter from me asking you to contribute what you can to our Annual Fund to support curriculum delivery and programs that help your student thrive. The mission of St. John Bosco, and now ours together, is to educate the children of the local community with reason, religion and loving kindness. Under the charism of St. John Bosco, and with your help, we can provide your student with the college preparatory education and the oratory experience you desire -- home, school, church, and playground. ACADEMICS Academic Requirements Ninth grade students enroll in a prescribed program of seven courses: English, World Language, Core Principles of Science or PLTW Pathway, Mathematics, Physical Education, World History, and Religion. World Language choices for 2020-2021 are French or Spanish. Levels in World Language and Mathematics can be challenged by taking placement tests at Salesian in the summer. In special circumstances, students may request a Visual and Performing Arts course to be substituted into their first year schedule. Guidance
All students meet with their academic guidance counselor during the first quarter. Parents can monitor student progress using our online Schoology software, which tracks homework, test scores, and grades. Schoology is updated by teachers regularly. Teachers use Schoology to communicate upcoming assignments and post important class materials.

NEW STUDENT DATES Placement Test Dates
To ensure students are set up for success, Salesian requires placement tests for students seeking classes above their grade level. Students who test in the top 25% on the High School Placement Test are automatically placed in World History Honors and English Honors. Please review your student’s acceptance paperwork as they have received notification of honors eligibility in their packet.

Orientation/First Day of School
Monday, August 17, 2020: The first day of school for freshmen and transfer students (8:00am2:00pm). Students MUST be in school uniform as school photos will be taken and ID cards will be issued. The day will begin in the gymnasium. A complimentary lunch will be served in the cafĂŠ. Salesian students will attend a Technology orientation session in order to best prepare for their first full day of classes on Tuesday. See Technology section for required laptop information and checklist.

Student Support Academic Advising
All Salesian students meet regularly with an academic adviser to select an appropriately challenging schedule of courses, and to ensure that all graduation requirements will be met. The academic advising team continues to support and counsel students as they navigate scheduling in subsequent years, standardized testing, and credit fulfillment.
Personal Counseling & Wellness Center
The many changes that occur during high school can cause challenges that may be resolved if they are explored in a non-judgmental environment. Our personal counselors are available to students who are experiencing difficulties, including adjustment challenges, issues with peers, or stress with school. Our staff is available to offer support and guide students through the challenges of adolescence. Students can request to visit with one of the personal counselors, or they may be referred by faculty, staff, or parents. While opportunities for counseling are available to all students, it is completely voluntary. In addition to personal counseling, there is a Wellness Center on campus intended to aid in early interventions for students experiencing social, emotional, or mental health challenges that affect learning in the classroom. It provides students with a safe, quiet and calming space to reduce stress and anxiety.

Academic Assistance Math Lab
A daily math lab is held for students after school to review lessons and provide one on one and small group tutoring.
Tutoring
Faculty is available Monday - Thursday after school from 2:50pm - 3:30pm. Students should check in with their instructors to plan a classroom drop in.
Before/After School Availability CafĂŠ
The Salesian CafĂŠ opens at 6:45am Monday - Friday with supervision for families needing to drop their students off early.
Library
The Library opens at 7:45am and is available during breaks, lunch and after school until 4:00pm for students who require a quiet, supervised setting to successfully complete school assignments.
Boys & Girls Club
For your convenience, the Boys & Girls Club is available daily after school until 6pm. All 9th graders are automatically enrolled in the Boys & Girls Club.
Breakfast and Lunch Program A-la-carte breakfast items are available before school and at morning break for $1.00-$3.00. School lunches cost $6.50. School lunch punch cards can be purchased at a discounted price in the morning and at lunch time in the Salesian Cafe. You may pay by cash or check (made payable to Catering by Marijane). Technology 2020 – 2021 Bring Your Own Device Program (BYOD) Salesian College Preparatory All 9th grade and transfer students at Salesian College Preparatory (SCP) are required to have a laptop for the 2020 - 2021 school year. Students are required to have at least a laptop with the following minimum specifications: Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 or higher, with Solid State Hard Drive or Mac OS 10.14.3 (Mojave) or higher Memory: 8GB or higher Storage: 256GB or higher Wi-Fi: 802.11g/5GHz compatibility or higher Bluetooth: 3.0 or higher internal microphone Warranty: Extended warranty that includes damage protection (recommended)

Student Responsibilities: 1. Students are expected to bring their privately-owned laptop to school every day, fully charged. 2. S tudents are responsible for hardware support and maintenance of their personal device. 3. Students must have all apps and accessories required by their teachers. 4. A ll contents and use of the student’s device are to conform to the mission and vision of SCP as well as the Acceptable Technology Use Policy. 5. S CP reserves the right to inspect the content of all laptops brought onto campus by students. 6. S tudents are to adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy at all times (Student-Family Handbook 2020-2021). 7. S tudents are to create a passcode/password on the laptop and keep the passcode/ password confidential. 8. Students should not share their passcode/password with anyone. 9. O ther than their parents or guardians, students are not to let anyone besides themselves use the laptop. 10. Students should not provide their personal information to anyone over the Internet. Disclosure: Salesian is a safe campus where theft or damage to personal property is not common; however, students should always secure their personal property in their locker, or in their backpack which they should keep with them. By bringing their own laptop to school, students and their parents/guardians accept full responsibility for damage which might occur to the laptop, as well as loss, or theft. Salesian College Preparatory is not responsible for the care, replacement, and/or repair of any device. student life There is never a dull moment in the life of a Salesian student. From clubs and sports teams to international trips and service opportunities, Salesian students have endless opportunities to be active and grow as individuals. Explore the many religious, co-curricular and service activities that students can participate in!
Arts
Salesian offers a variety of classes and activities for students who want to be creative. Get involved in a theatrical performance, join our popular choral group, Story and Song, discover the world of music in our school band, or express yourself through dance or art. Athletics
Salesian College Preparatory has a well-deserved reputation as the “Home of Champions.” Since 2000, the Salesian Athletic Program has earned four California State Titles, seven NorCal Championships, 25 North Coast Section Team Championships, seven North Coast Section Individual Championships and 62 League Championships. The Salesian Pride field 15 teams across 13 sports with 25 competition levels (Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshman) across 3 seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring). Campus Ministry
CMT members express, through their faith-based emphasis on service, our Salesian commitment to serve youth and those in need. CMT students are the heart of many of our school’s communityfocused activities. Such events include community toy-drives, fundraisers for international relief causes, and local events for children in the community. Clubs
Over 30 clubs are offered at Salesian College Preparatory and reflect the diverse nature of our student population - enabling students to follow their passion in different areas of interest. New clubs are formed by students each year! Club Day takes place during the first few weeks of school so students can sign up. Clubs include Habitat for Humanity, National Honor Society, Outdoor Adventures, Junior State of America (JSA), Debate, Art, and Robotics to name a few. Retreats
Every year, each student takes part in a class retreat. The class retreat is designed to cultivate community and encourage students to explore their faith more fully. For more information, visit salesian.com/student-life/religious-life.
Service Learning
In order to instill in our students the importance of volunteerism and investing in one’s community and giving back, each of our students must fulfill their personal service commitments throughout the academic year. At Salesian College Preparatory, SLAM is the collective form of student leadership and ministry. The mission of SLAM is to create a culture for good, a lever to serve the greater school community. Family Service Program (FSP) Salesian College Preparatory has established a Family Service Program (FSP) as an avenue for families to be involved with school events by volunteering, financial support, and community building. Without family support, many of the school’s events would not happen. Each family is expected to offer volunteer service throughout the school year.

FSP requirements for each family (not per student) are: (FSP 1) Work at one large event - all day or evening (i.e., Project Santa, Crab Feed, Service Day Driver, Golf Tournament and Dinner, Athletic Booster all-day events, etc.) (FSP 2) Work at least one other event or activity (i.e., Dance, Sporting Event)
Attend ONE grade-level evening meeting per year: 9th Grade: Meeting with Personal Counselor, Mr. David Franklin: October 10th Grade: Meeting about adolescents and drug/alcohol use: November 11th Grade: Meeting with College Counselor, Mr. Jack Stevens: September 12th Grade: Senior Parent Meeting regarding Graduation activities: February
FSP service opportunities include activities such as: • A thletic Events: Booster Club – Fall, Winter and Spring sporting events, gate, parking, CYO track meets, concession – Snack Shack, set-up, clean-up, etc. • School Events: Set-up, clean-up, serve, chaperone, drive for Service Day, Crab Feed, Welcome Dinner, Homecoming BBQ, Alumni events, Senior class reception, Golf Tournament and Dinner, Project Santa, class dinners, Mother’s Day Mass and Brunch, etc. Parents/Guardians should register on-line to the Family Service Program by the 1st day of school in August (see website for details). There is an "Opt Out Fee" option for families who decline to participate in FSP and agree to pay $500 instead. All financial assistance from Salesian (including scholarships) will be put on hold until FSP registration is complete or the Opt Out Fee is paid. Please note: It is solely the responsibility of the parent/guardian to actively pursue (FSP) volunteer opportunities at Salesian.

Global Citizenship Salesian students experience learning that extends beyond the classroom. Throughout their high school experience, students engage with different cultures, absorb new perspectives, and gain skills that prepare them to make a positive impact as global citizens. By being part of a diverse student body, students learn to respect cultures, languages, religions, and traditions other than their own. International Trips
International Trips are offered to students every year. Past trips have included visits to France, Italy, Spain, Japan, Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, Belize, and New Zealand, to name a few.

New Orleans Trip
Our Habitat for Humanity club students take an annual trip to New Orleans to build homes for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
International Host Family Opportunities
SCP is an International school and we have hosted students from ten different countries. There are opportunities for families who are interested in hosting an international student. Exchange Program — Quebec
Students who are enrolled in French language classes have an opportunity to enjoy a week long trip to Quebec, meeting students at another Salesian School in Canada.
Exchange Program — Parma, Italy
Our students have the opportunity to broaden their education in Italy at the San Benedetto Salesian Institute in Parma, Italy. Multiple programs are offered from two weeks to a 6-month study abroad academic program, with a focus on STEM, Sport Science and Business.

DRESS CODE The faculty and administration of Salesian College Preparatory believe that appropriateness in attire has a positive influence on student work and that it enhances the learning environment for all involved. We expect every Salesian student to be in dress code daily on campus, from arrival to departure. After school, students involved in co-curricular activities, including athletics, may wear team or club approved spirit-wear if the moderator or coach gives permission.

The school uniforms should be purchased online through Land’s End. The website is www.landsend.com/shop/school-uniforms. Click on ‘Find My School’ and register your student(s) to create an account. Please keep in mind that shipments may take several weeks so it is highly recommended that you place orders early in the summer. Students are expected to be in full dress code on the first day of school. Dress code requirements are included in this information packet. Here is what we expect every Salesian student to wear every day: • Approved Land’s End Salesian collared shirt (polo or button up) and approved Salesian outerwear (sweatshirts, sweater, jacket, etc.) • Untattered black or khaki slacks, or black or khaki Bermuda or cargo style shorts to the knees. Students may also wear a black, gray, or khaki uniform skirt, length to knee level or 3-inches below the knee. • Closed-toed shoes with backs Additional apparel options are available on our completely customized BSN Sideline Store at: bsnsports.com/schools/california/richmond/salesian-college-preparatory. The Salesian Sideline Store allows students, staff, families, alumni, and fans alike to purchase and customize Salesian Swag from their favorite sport or club with a special section for our alumni!

Code of Conduct The goal of Salesian discipline is self-discipline. Students are given the opportunity to develop good judgment and to make decisions within the limits of acceptable behavior. Our students are identified with Salesian College Preparatory, and the public perception of the school is formed by student behavior, both on and off campus. Consequently, students are accountable for their behavior both on and off campus. Misconduct calls for disciplinary action. Behavior problems will be handled in the following sequence: — — — — —

Classroom Regulations a. The teacher is to be respectfully obeyed at all times. b. A n admit slip from the Front Office is required when students seek admittance after the initial class bell has rung. c. S tudents are not to move desks, adjust blinds or windows, or touch the whiteboard unless asked to do so by the teacher. d. S tudents are not to stand or move around during class without the explicit permission of the teacher. e. W hen the bell announces the end of a period, students are to await the teacher’s signal before moving from the room. f. Students are encouraged to use the restroom during the passing period and break. g. F ood and beverages are only to be consumed in the Café, outside, on the 1st floor of the main building, or other designated areas. Students found eating or drinking in non- designated areas are subject to having their food or beverage confiscated and disposed of by a school authority. h. Gum-chewing is not allowed anywhere on school property. i. N either possession or smoking of tobacco products or vaping is allowed at any time in school or within a two-block radius of the school. Students should not be in possession of any vaping paraphernalia at any time. Any infraction of this type will ordinarily result in suspension or expulsion. j. A ny use of alcohol or any other controlled substance will result in immediate disciplinary and/or police action. Expulsion may result if Salesian students are involved. 20
Electronic Devices Cell Phone Usage (including voice, text messaging, use of the camera or social media): To prevent disruption in class, students may NOT use cellular phones during class time or passing periods. During break and lunch, students may use their cell phones in an appropriate manner. Please keep in mind the following in regard to the use of students’ personal cell phones: — I f a teacher deems it necessary to use the cell phone in the classroom as an acceptable educational tool, then students must follow the instructions given to them in the classroom for the use of their phones. — In the case of an illness or an emergency during the school day, students must ask a teacher, administrator or staff member for permission to use their phones to contact home. — No student may use any type of electronic device (cell phone, iPad, iPod, Google watch, etc.) during an exam or quiz, unless given specific instructions to the contrary by the teacher. — Failure to comply with any of the above stipulations may result in confiscation of the device. — If asked, a student must hand over his or her phone to the teacher, staff member or administrator immediately, and without complaint. Parents/Guardians will be notified if and when this action is taken. * Please review the complete Code of Student Behavior in the Online Student-Family Handbook prior to the start of school.

TRANSPORTATION Salesian continues to provide a van shuttle transportation service. Your student can look forward to being picked up in one of our Salesian vans every morning and dropped off each afternoon. If you are interested in signing your student up for this program, we ask that you complete and submit the form provided to you by August 3, 2020. There is limited availability and space is on a first come, first served basis. Once we finalize the numbers, we will provide you with the schedule of pick up and drop off times to best accommodate our families. The cost per semester will be $550, paid in advance. If space is available, the one-way cost per semester will be $350, paid in advance. If you choose to pay the entire year in advance, the cost will be $1,050. Where do I find the school schedule?
The school schedule and calendar updates are available on the school website under the Calendar link and also on the daily bulletin.
Where can I find the school rules and policies?
The school rules and policies are documented for parents and students in the Student-Family Handbook under the Student and Parent link.
What do I need to do if my child is sick?
Please call the Main office, (510) 234 - 4433 ext. 1000 between 8am and 9:30am on the day of the absence.
What is the dress code?
Dress code policy is explained in the Parent - Student Handbook and on the website under the Student and Parent link.
When is the deadline to register for the Family Service Program (FSP)? The deadline to register for the Family Service Program is the first day of school.
What is Schoology?
Salesian provides online access to grades. Schoology is the learning management system and provides an online complement to your student’s classes. Grades, course homework, review sheets, and assignments are examples of resources posted on the Schoology site.
How do I contact teachers?
You are encouraged to contact teachers at any time to partner with them on your child’s progress. Teachers are available through email (all teacher contact information is posted on the school website). You can expect a response within 48 hours. You will have the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers at Back-to-School Night in early September.
Why should I attend Backto-School Night?
Back-to-School Night offers an opportunity to “walk in your child’s shoes,” as parents move through classrooms and meet teachers based on their child’s course schedule. Each teacher makes a short presentation on course expectations and policies.
May I request a meeting with a teacher?
Parents are invited to schedule conferences with teachers at any time during the school year.
What occurs at the Parent Grade Level Meetings that occur throughout the school year?
Parent grade level meetings address teen choices and decision-making regarding health and safety issues. All parents/guardians are required to attend one session each year in order to fulfill your Family Service Program (FSP) requirement.
Is tutoring available to students?
Tutoring is available Monday - Thursday after school. We highly recommend that students take advantage of the additional support. Please see the online tutoring times and locations under the student link on our website.
