Why did you choose Salesian as your high school? I chose Salesian as my high school because of its incredibly strong and supportive community. I know that I will always feel comfortable, welcome, and respected here. The academics are also quite impressive, with many honors/AP classes available to challenge students and encourage them to push themselves.

How has Salesian prepared you for your college goals? I wouldn’t say that I have a dream college at this point, but any of the UC’s would be amazing, especially UC Berkeley. Salesian’s various APs and other advanced classes will certainly help prepare me for such endeavors.

What is your biggest accomplishment so far? My biggest accomplishment so far is probably the Academic Awards. I received 8 separate awards for my academic excellence at Salesian, which gave me a feeling of satisfaction and recognition for the time and effort I spent achieving this. What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? Being Salesian means following the teachings of Don Bosco, who approached education with reason, religion, and loving-kindness. I try to embody this by using logic to understand not just the world around me, but the people around me. I use religion as a moral compass that constantly guides me, and most of all, I use loving-kindness by always leading with empathy. What do you think makes Salesian special? I think the Salesian pillars of Home, School, Church, and Playground make it special. This structure emphasizes that high school isn’t just about getting good grades. It’s about feeling at home, learning with an interest, cultivating moral character, and making friendships and connections that last. What is your passion and purpose and how does Salesian support it? My passion is to achieve excellence in whatever I put my mind to, whether that means academics, theater, or even student government. Salesian grants me these opportunities. My purpose is simple: I don’t need the world to remember my name. I just want those who knew me to believe that I was a good person. Salesian supports this by teaching me communitybuilding skills in a diverse environment.

How does Salesian make you feel like you BELONG? Salesian has an inviting community, so I always feel like I belong whether inside or outside of the classroom. What is your favorite subject/ class and why? My favorite subject would have to be math. Not only is it a universal language, it’s extremely useful in everyday life as well

What is your biggest accomplishment so far? My greatest accomplishment has been maintaining a 4.0 unweighted GPA while taking on a rigorous academic workload and balancing athletics, clubs, and other commitments. I am especially proud of this because I struggled academically during the first semester of my sophomore year. Overcoming those challenges required discipline, resilience, and a stronger approach to learning. Earning consistent academic success since then has shown me that I can thrive in demanding environments and has strengthened my confidence in my ability to meet high expectations.

What do you think makes Salesian special? Salesian stands out because it encourages students to pursue a wide range of interests. While it has a strong athletic tradition, it also fosters passions in science, the arts, literature, and many other fields. No matter what your interests are, Salesian provides the support and opportunities to help you reach your potential.

How has Salesian helped you grow? Salesian has taught me how to work with others and the differences in perspectives, and sharing these perspectives makes the world better.

What is your passion and purpose and how does Salesian support it? I am very passionate about making the world a better place, starting with the environment that I currently live in, the Bay Area. The Bay Area is a wonderful melting pot of cultures and economic backgrounds. I believe that the only way to change economic and racial injustice is by working from the inside, which is why I want to study Political Science. Salesian provides all the stepping stones for me to be successful.

What part of the Oratory speaks to you? Why? The Playground speaks to me the most. In order to excel in Home and School you need to have fun, you need to have spaces to express yourself. My space is Track and Field, specifically my relay team. How has Salesian prepared you for your college goals? I want to attend Spelman College. I believe that Salesian has prepared me because it taught me how to be independent. I believe that this is a skill that is essential to college success.

What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? I embody the Salesian spirit through my commitment to Student Life and supporting those around me. Salesian is a family, and everyone plays a role in its success. By encouraging my friends and classmates and giving my best effort both in and out of the classroom, I strive to contribute to our community.

In what ways do you think you contribute to the diversity at Salesian? I believe I provide a unique perspective to any table that I am at, and that’s what makes Salesian so beautiful. We have people from different racial and economic backgrounds, each with their own outlook on life. What do you take PRIDE in at Salesian? I take pride in AAAK. I spend a lot of time and effort planning and executing assemblies and the Black Commencement Ceremony. I love making a positive contribution to my school. What is your favorite subject/class and why? My favorite subject is History. I believe that you have to learn history so it’s not repeated. I have a huge interest in History because it explains why the world is where it is now.

Why did you choose Salesian as your high school? I chose Salesian because of the community and experiences that it promised. I never heard of the PLTW program prior to learning about Salesian. My friends were attending Salesian at the time of my decision, and their insistence that Salesian held a community that was diverse, educational, and inclusive really influenced me. The want for a new environment that would provide new experiences as well as familiarity.

What do you think makes Salesian special? I think Salesian’s cultural and religious diversity allows it to thrive among its peers. The community allows for students to feel connected on a deeper level. What is your favorite subject/class and why? My favorite subject is English, the fact that literature can be interpreted in many different ways entices me. There is no wrong or right answer. I particularly enjoy reading novels while dissecting and analyzing pieces to make sense of it.

What part of the Oratory speaks to you? Why? Home speaks to me the most, I feel that community is the most important aspect of life; connection with others and being able to be yourself, impartial to criticism of others.

What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? I embody many Salesian pillars of the Oratory. I dedicate a lot of time to my academics, engaging with teachers as well as classmates. I am also very involved within the community, being an active member of a few clubs, and junior class representative. Through my character, I provide a safe space for others, just as Salesian has done for me.

MAHOGANY F. JUNIOR

What is your biggest accomplishment so far? I am most proud of my development in language learning. I have been taking Spanish for two years now, and plan to continue it for a third year. My entire family speaks English, as it is our native language. At first learning Spanish was difficult, remembering things such as conjugations and day-to-day nouns. But overtime it grew easier, I am very proud of myself for my commitment to expanding this skill. In what ways do you think you contribute to the diversity at Salesian? I think I contribute to the diversity at Salesian through my complex variety of interests. I find the medical field as well as the creative field very interesting. My combination of the two is not that common, I hope to one day connect the two. At Salesian, I can.

Tell us about your ‘family’ or your support system at school? I experienced trouble adjusting to the idea of being around new people- I became extremely anxious, but as I grew closer to people around me, not only did I find a family, but I also found myself in the process.

What excites you about Salesian? What excites me about Salesian is the school community. Whether it be the students, teachers, or faculty, the community at Salesian is something that has created so many great memories for me and I know there will be many more great memories to come. What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? I think I embody what it means to be Salesian through the way I interact with others. I like to think I am very approachable and willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.

What is your biggest accomplishment so far? My biggest accomplishment so far is probably being elected as Junior Class President. It was something that I wanted to do, but at the same time It required me to come out of my shell more, which was definitely a huge challenge for me. Ultimately it was worth it. What do you take PRIDE in at Salesian? I take pride in showing up to school every day and putting my best foot forward in everything I do. Some days are harder than others for sure, but I take pride in knowing that regardless of how I feel, I will be satisfied with what I have accomplished at the end of the school day.

Why did you choose Salesian as your high school? I have two older siblings, and they both went to Salesian. Being able to grow up around the school and experience the hospitable environment made the decision to attend Salesian a no-brainer.

How has Salesian prepared you for your college goals? My dream college is UCLA. Salesian has prepared me for it by instilling college-level education and habits that I believe are necessary after high school. What is your passion and purpose and how does Salesian support it? I believe my passion and purpose is making sure others are happy. It makes me happy to know that my efforts have somehow made a positive impact on someone. Salesian supports this passion of mine by creating an environment where I can be myself and I don’t have to be afraid of who I am. Feeling comfortable with who I am allows me to in turn have genuine interactions with others which is a positive for everyone.

What part of the Oratory speaks to you? Why? Home speaks most to me because it’s so strong. People are present on campus from 6 am to 6 pm because there is constantly a place where they feel welcomed, supported, and at home. Who is your favorite teacher? My favorite teacher is Mr. Barkett, he motivates me to match his literary knowledge and talents.

Why did you choose Salesian as your high school? I chose Salesian to be my high school because of the strong ties I felt to the community and campus. My parents attended Salesian in the 90s and I’ve had many friends and family graduate since then. What is your favorite subject/class and why? My favorite classes are the ones that make up the four-year Project Lead The Way Program, as they expand on the base science curriculum and teach valuable lessons for pursuing a career in healthcare.

What excites you about Salesian?

The palpable atmosphere of family at Salesian excites me. With a relatively small student population, you really get to know people you wouldn’t necessarily interact with otherwise, and discover that you have more in common than you initially thought. What is your biggest accomplishment so far? I’m most proud of maintaining a position on the honor roll every year. What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? I embody Salesian by actively participating in the community inside and out of school: volunteering at youth camps, participating in county cleanups, and working at food drives. How has Salesian prepared you for your college goals? My dream university is the University of California, Santa Cruz. The rigorous academic expectations of Salesian and the encouragement to pursue extracurricular activities has prepared me for enrollment, or enrollment in a similar college. What is your passion and purpose and how does Salesian support it? My passion is to explore all the world has to offer and meet new people that offer new perspectives on life and the world. Salesian has offered me a small glimpse into this reality with its community, and all I can think of now is expanding on that passion of exploration.

Why did you choose Salesian as your high school? Midyear me and my family had to make one of the hardest decisions by transferring to a school where I didn’t know anybody and leaving all of my friends that I’ve had for years. My family and I decided that Salesian was the school that I could restart at because of the rigorous classes, personal support, and college preparation in a smaller community setting. What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? I embody what it means to be Salesian by bringing positivity, kindness, and energy into the community through my personality. I am someone who always stands up for what is right and speaks up for others when needed, because I believe leadership means showing courage, respect, and compassion. These qualities reflect the support and caring values that make the Salesian community special.

How has Salesian helped you grow? Salesian has helped me grow not only as a student and athlete but also in my faith. I have developed a stronger relationship with God and learned to trust in Him through both successes and challenges. Being a student-athlete has taught me discipline, resilience, teamwork, and humility, while also reminding me to lead with integrity and gratitude. Through balancing academics, athletics, and faith, I discovered that I am more confident, determined, and capable than I once believed. Salesian has shown me that growth is not just about achievement–it is also about becoming a person who lives with a purpose, faith, and service to others. What do you think makes Salesian special? I feel like Salesian is special because of how connected everyone is. Many students join clubs, play sports, plan school events, which creates a welcoming and energetic atmosphere. How has Salesian prepared you for your college goals? My dream college is Hawai’i University of Mānoa and Salesian has prepared me for it by giving me strong academics, leadership experience, and a supportive environment that helps students become more independent and collegeready. Salesian’s diverse community and focus on service and leadership could also help me fit into the welcoming and multicultural environment at UH Mānoa.

Why did you choose Salesian as your high school? I chose to go to Salesian because I enjoyed the environment and the curriculum that the school provided. Salesian promised opportunities for me to continue growing my faith with their religion classes, allowed me to explore possible careers through their 4 year Biomedical Science pathway, and had a strong performing arts program and welcoming community that I wanted to be a part of. Tell us about your ‘family’ or your support system at school? At Salesian, my “family” includes everyone who is a part of my friend group. We all support each other in the activities we are involved in and encourage each other to bring new ideas to Salesian. For example, some of my friends and I co-founded Project HOPE where we advocate and lead activities to bring the Salesian community together and reduce stress. We also lead fundraisers to better our Salesian community and well-being, and currently we are working on projects for equity on campus.

What is your favorite subject/class and why? My favorite classes I’ve taken since freshman year have been the PLTW Biomedical Science classes that vary topics each year. These rigorous classes have allowed me to experience different medical careers and responsibilities through hands-on laboratory work, research, and professional lab reports. We researched topics like forensic science in freshman year, while junior year research focused on topics like cancer and nano-medicine. This pathway is challenging, however it’s my favorite subject because it’s exposed me to so many aspects of the medical field. In what ways do you think you contribute to the diversity at Salesian? I contribute to Salesian’s diversity by being a part of AAPI and planning our annual assembly that showcases Salesian’s cultural diversity. What do you think makes Salesian special? Salesian is special because we care deeply about service: serving the Salesian community and the real-world community as a whole. They put an emphasis on service by having us do personal service projects each year as well as having a school-wide community service day.

How does Salesian make you feel like you BELONG? Students at Salesian are not afraid to join new activities or join and instate clubs suited to interests they’ve already had. I felt like I belonged the minute I made friends who joined the same clubs and extracurriculars and I did.

What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? I am Salesian because I am passionate about furthering my education and interests within the arts. However, being Salesian also means serving others and putting their needs before your own. I know that I am privileged to be going to a school that gives me so many opportunities for my future, but within Salesian I’ve served others by helping AAPI fundraise for those impacted by Hurricane Helene, and next year Project HOPE will continue to fundraise for utilities that would serve the Salesian community better, like our sanitary station, as well as donate money towards communities in need.

Mr. Nightingale because he pushes me to be a better person, holds me accountable, and he sees my potential. In what ways do you think you contribute to the diversity at Salesian? I contribute through my diverse interests, by being a student athlete with a solid GPA, and being heavily involved in a variety of clubs. Tell us about your ‘family’ or your support system at school? My family at school are my teammates because they hold me accountable and help me grow as a person. I can go to each and every one of them if I need to talk about anything and I do the same for them. Clubs & Organizations | Over 40 clubs are offered at Salesian College Preparatory, reflecting the diverse interests, talents, and cultural backgrounds of our student body. From academically focused, to creative, cultural, and service-based groups, students have countless opportunities to explore their passions and develop leadership skills beyond the classroom. Retreats | Annual class retreats are designed to cultivate community and encourage students to explore their faith and spirituality more fully. Student Leadership and Ministry (SLAM) | SLAM is the collective form of student leadership and ministry. The mission of SLAM is to create a culture for good, a lever to serve the greater school community. By working together, SLAM members encourage spirit and cohesiveness throughout the entire school. Service Learning | In order to instill in our students the importance of volunteerism and investing in one’s community and giving back, each of our students must fulfill their personal service commitments throughout the academic year. Students participate in four Service Projects annually, benefiting local and global communities. Campus Ministry Team | In collaboration with the Coordinator of Youth Ministry, the Campus Ministry Team (CMT) helps plan and celebrate school liturgies, while also organizing community toy drives, fundraisers for international relief efforts, and events that support children and families in our local community. Through these experiences, students are invited to live out their faith in meaningful and active ways.

Academic Success Program

Twice a week, students have a 35-minute flex period built into their daily schedule to allow for more individualized learning and social activities. Our faculty is available Monday - Thursday after school for tutoring in addition to any Flex period set up for tutoring. Additionally, through a partnership with the UC Berkeley School of Education, UC Berkeley undergraduates serve as on-campus tutors once a week, sometimes more, after school. In addition to two personal counselors, students have access to The Wellness Center, located on the first floor. This device-free zone offers students a safe, quiet, and calming place to reduce stress and anxiety. This space was created to support early interventions for students experiencing social, emotional, or mental health challenges that affect classroom learning. For students who would benefit from additional academic support, Salesian offers the Academic Success Program (ASP), a college preparatory program designed to help highly motivated students build the study skills and strategies needed for success in high school and beyond. ASP serves students with IEPs, 504 Plans, learning differences, lower scores on the HSPT entrance exam, teacher or counselor recommendations, and those who simply need extra support to strengthen their academic foundation.

Why did you choose Salesian as your high school? I chose Salesian because it felt like a place where everyone knew and cared about each other. Salesian has a very close-knit community, and I was drawn to Salesian from the first time I set foot on campus. I knew Salesian is where I wanted to be. My older brother was a Senior when I was a Freshman, so I got to see the community before I even started. In what ways do you think you contribute to the diversity at Salesian? I contribute through my involvement in athletics and by building friendships with people from different backgrounds. What is your favorite subject/class and why? My favorite class is math because I enjoy learning new things, being challenged, and having discussions that help me think in different ways. What do you think makes Salesian special? What makes Salesian special is how much it focuses on building good people, not just good students. The relationships between students, teachers, and coaches are genuine, and everyone is held to a high standard while still feeling supported. The community truly feels like a family.

Tell us about your ‘family’ or your support system at school? My biggest support system are my teammates, my coaches, my teachers, and my friends. We push each other to be better every day, not just as athletes, but as people. Whether my teammates are challenging me on the court, or my classmates are pushing me in the classroom, I know I can always count on the people around me for encouragement and support. How has Salesian helped you grow? Salesian has helped me become more confident, responsible, and resilient. I’ve discovered that I’m capable of leading others, overcoming challenges, and balancing academics with athletics while staying true to my values. What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? I try to lead by example by showing respect, working hard, and treating others with kindness. I take pride in having good character, supporting my classmates and teammates, and representing Salesian the right way both on and off the court.

What is your biggest accomplishment so far? One of my biggest accomplishments is playing varsity basketball for all four years of high school and making it to the state championship twice within my first three years. It has taught me discipline, leadership, teamwork, and perseverance, and I’m proud of the relationships I’ve built along the way.

What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? To ‘Be Salesian’, means to foster meaningful relationships and contribute to a strong, supportive community. As an outgoing person, I value the connections I build with others, whether they are lifelong friends, new classmates, teachers, or mentors. I also value academics & athletics and am passionate about both. How has Salesian prepared you for your college goals? Either NYU or UCLA. It’s difficult to say for certain since I’m only in my second year of high school, but the deadlines and homework due dates have definitely helped me build skills and habits that will prepare me for college.

How has Salesian helped you grow? Salesian has made me create more connections, and those bonds and friendships are something that matter most to me. How does Salesian make you feel like you BELONG? People at Salesian are welcoming and kind, and it’s easy to find your place. I can say this from my own experience, as I came to Salesian not knowing anyone and was still able to build connections and feel included. What do you think makes Salesian special? The teachers listen, especially the teachers and faculty who don’t teach you. Administrators like Mr. Farr and Ms. Rivera talk to students and make them feel comfortable and safe. Ms. Okada wasn’t my teacher, but I’ve become close with her from swimming, and it makes my experience at Salesian extra special. What is your biggest accomplishment so far? My biggest accomplishment so far is winning all my races at TCAL for swim. I’m most proud of getting an A in the second semester final for Biology Honors.

My friends and teachers definitely fit that description; my friends were my starting ground, and as the school year went on, I became closer with teachers and staff, making them a foundation of support.

What part of the Oratory speaks to you? Why? Home and Playground are the parts that stick with me the most. However, since all of the oratories are connected, they feel intertwined. A home cannot truly feel like home without a place where you are comfortable enough to play, be yourself, and create memories. To me, home represents a place where you can relax, have fun, learn, and feel genuinely happy. What is your passion and purpose and how does Salesian support it? I’m considering either a career in international journalism, such as covering politics, history, or sharing people’s stories, or entertainment journalism, which could involve interviewing people, attending press tours, and reporting on the entertainment industry. Another path I’m interested in is travel nursing or another type of medical career that allows me to help others while experiencing different places and cultures.

Immersion trips take students across the United States and abroad, deepening their understanding of culture, history, and faith. In Italy, students visit significant Roman Catholic pilgrimage sites while also experiencing regional cuisines and traditions. Capstone trips to Spain and Morocco explore the artistic and architectural richness of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, offering students a deeper appreciation of global cultural connections. Students travel to Paris, where they engage with local artists and college students, learn to cook à la française, and explore the cultural and historical legacy, immersing themselves in Francophone culture. Salesian also partners with its French-speaking sister school, Le Salésien in Québec, Canada, to provide a unique twin-visit exchange experience.

How has Salesian helped you grow? Salesian has helped me grow into adapting into a new environment and to develop stronger leadership skills. I’ve discovered my voice more than ever and that I can make an impact. In what ways do you think you contribute to the diversity at Salesian? I believe being well rounded is so important to develop so many diverse skills over time, meet new people, and gain wisdom from them that can help me along the way.

What do you take PRIDE in at Salesian? I take pride in the students, the sports, and the education. My peers inspire me in so many great ways to do better and to improve and challenge myself everyday. Their actions have truly encouraged me to have such high goals for myself and I really take pride in that. How does Salesian make you feel like you BELONG? I’ve found more people that I can connect with on a deeper level and developed stronger relationships with other people. I’ve encountered many students who are similar to me and we share the same interests and we can always have pretty productive conversations and talk about anything and everything.

What does it mean to ‘Be Salesian’? Our mascot symbol at Salesian is “The Pride” which is a group of lions living and interacting together. It’s a family that works together. And I believe that I embody what it means to be Salesian by always being willing to work with others and develop a bond to the point where we become a family. What is your biggest accomplishment so far? I’d say one of my biggest accomplishments so far would be receiving a supporting role my freshman year in the Spring musical. I’m grateful to have been given such a big responsibility and taking on that role alongside my other castmates. What do you think makes Salesian special? What makes Salesian so special is the amount of effort put into the school and toward the students. No matter who you are, where you came from, and what your background is, everyone is given a chance to experience what it means to be Salesian. The amount of care, love, and effort put toward students is very reassuring, and everyone is always welcome. How has Salesian prepared you for your college goals? UCLA is currently my number 1 school and even though I’m only a Sophomore, Salesian prepares me by giving more advanced course-work compared to the average traditional high school, and consistently challenges students to do their best, be their best… and let God do the rest.

What excited me most about Salesian is all the opportunities to get involved, whether it is to help set up for an event, sports, clubs, or even leadership. To me, that is something that brings everyone at Salesian together.

How has Salesian helped you grow? Salesian has helped me become more confident and responsible.
