Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s Letter Dear Friends, As you can see on our spectacular wrap-around cover, the gymnasium of Corpus ChristiHoly Rosary School in Port Chester, NY, resembled the United Nations when students displayed the flags of the countries where their parents were born, a touching way to welcome Sr. Chantal Mukase Ruzagiriza. As you will read on page 3, Sr. Chantal is journeying throughout our Province on an official canonical visitation. “The children were so happy and enthused to meet Sr. Chantal,” reports Sr. Lise Parent, president of Corpus Christi-Holy Rosary. “She, in turn, was impressed by our dedication to provide children from such diverse backgrounds with a quality, Salesian-based education. We were delighted to share our wonderful school with her!” Our Adopt a Sister Program, now in its 28th year, continues to thrive! The fourth annual Adopt a Sister Luncheon in Tampa was a great success, an opportunity for Adopters to greet their Sisters, but also a chance for newcomers to learn about this unique mutual exchange of prayer, friendship, and love. VATICAN CITY – Mother Yvonne Reungoat, Superior General of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco), gave the opening prayer on February 22 at the historic Vatican Summit on the Protection of Minors in the Church.

In her prayer, Mother Yvonne called for healing, saying, “Lord Jesus, you who love every man and woman, please bring us healing, please bring us peace.” The four-day summit of Bishops and Church leaders was called by Pope Francis to discuss the scourge of sexual abuse. The Salesian Sisters are the largest female religious order in the world, spanning across 93 nations and six continents, including the U.S.!

Canonical Visitation of our Province under way
E
very six years, every FMA province around the world receives a canonical visitation by the Mother General of the Salesian Sisters, or one of her appointed deputies. This spring, our Province of St. Joseph is delighted to welcome Visiting Councilor, Sr. Chantal Mukase Ruzagiriza. Sr. Chantal has been very busy, traveling up and down the East Coast and in Canada, visiting every Salesian convent and school in our Province. The canonical visitation is an opportunity for the Salesian Sisters to strengthen the international bonds of friendship and fidelity, to listen to the needs of the Sisters in their local communities, and to share ideas for growth in service and in holiness. Sr. Chantal was born in Byahi-Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her family later moved to nearby Rwanda. She entered the Institute in 1988 and made her first vows in1992. In the early years of her Salesian
life she generously lent her service in community activities, expressing a strong capacity for self-giving and the caring attention for each person. Young people and Sisters easily gathered where she was, attracted by her gentleness, manners, and depth.
motherliness and self-giving beyond measure. After serving as Mistress of Novices and Provincial Superior, Sr. Chantal was invited to take on the task of Visiting Councilor. When asked about her new appointment, Sr. Chantal said, “I felt fear when I heard my name repeated frequently, but I was told, ‘You are not alone.’ I felt in me the voice of the Lord: ‘I will be with you always.’”

Annual gathering of supporters
Celebrating “Adopt a Sister” in Tampa!
O
n March 1, the fourth annual “Adopt a Sister” Luncheon was held in the gymnasium of Villa Madonna School in Tampa, FL. Nearly 200 Adopters and even those who knew nothing about the program gathered for a festive celebration and the chance to chat and meet the Salesian Sisters, including many who came just for the occasion: Sr. Domenica DiPeri, Sr. Clare Kennelly, Sr. Suzanne Dauwalter, Sr. Katie Flanagan, Sr. Carmen Peña, Sr. Theresa Lee, and Sr. Mary Rinaldi. Along with viewing the 1999 episode of ABC’s “20/20” that featured the Adopt a Sister program, attendees had a chance to discover why current Adopters love and recommend the program.

A grand time was had by all, as you can see from the photos on the following pages. Many first-time guests were thrilled to take part, and can’t wait to come back next year! Sacred Heart Center in Newton, NJ
Cooperators strive always to put Jesus first
J
ust yesterday a friend of mine asked me what was I doing up at Sacred Heart Center in Newton, NJ, and what it meant to be a “Salesian Cooperator”. Well, I answered, “I was eating Sr. Carmen Morales’ AMAZING apple turnovers, of course!” They are full of the Holy Spirit, no doubt about it!
Novices prepare for retreats at the center by making beds, doing laundry, preparing sacramental materials, and any other volunteer services they request. We are so grateful for this beautiful center and these precious servants of God who trust us with these duties. Occasionally we also prepare special luncheons to recognize the Novices who are studying so dutifully to make their vows. Sometimes in turn they will perform a Don Bosco skit or song for us!

he Salesian Sisters Partners Circle was founded in 1991 to provide unrestricted funds for urgent needs of the Salesian Sisters and their mission. These include support for capital needs, scholarship assistance, technology upgrades, and funds for those unforeseen situations that require immediate attention. Dear Friends: A message from Sister Joanne
“Premier Access” on Heaven’s Journey
A
s Provincial, I cover a lot of miles visiting our 17 different communities in our Province of St. Joseph. I also attend meetings in Italy, Mexico and various other places and sometimes am not even sure what time zone I am in! I diligently track my miles in my United Airlines “app”, hoping to someday accrue enough mileage to reach a privileged status that will minimize my time in line and afford a few more conveniences when running through terminals and compressing my few possessions into smaller and smaller carry-on bags. Recently, I was very happy to be notified on my United Airlines app that I had achieved “Silver Elite Status”. Usually silver awards are associated with second place, so I hoped that my new status would make travel a little easier. However, I’ve been disappointed in this accomplishment. At first I was excited to flash my boarding pass with “Premier Access” stamped across the top. I felt like an insider. I was ready to experience whatever being “Silver Elite” had in store for me. My travels began well enough, with the airline employees ushering me down a special path, allowing me to skip a long line and guiding me to follow the signs for my newly-acquired status. But I soon realized being “Silver Elite” wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Instead of my travel being eased, I had to carry my heavy suitcase up a broken escalator! Not one to complain, I made do and hoped, once I reached the gate,
to at least benefit from more rapid boarding. I usually found myself, at best, in Boarding Group 4. My new status allowed me to be in earlier Boarding Group 2, which seemed an improvement. Alas, my initial relief in finding myself in Group 2 was quickly replaced with disillusionment, as four large “pre-boarding groups”

I share all of this not to inspire your pity, although I know many of you can sympathize with difficulties in travel, but to draw our focus back to the “elite status” that really matters. As I stood, waiting to board in my sardine-packed boarding group, I reflected on how I have spent so much effort tracking my miles and trying to achieve the small progress that would allow me shorter lines on the way to my destination. I wondered if I had devoted as much

effort to trying to “shorten my line” to Heaven, and to achieve the kind of holiness that will allow me not just “silver elite” status, but a quick entry into the ultimate destination we all aim for – Heaven. Although I cannot bank miles from dragging my suitcase up the broken escalator or being elbowed by my fellow eager passengers, I can “invest” those experiences into a savings for eternal life, towards blessings and graces for myself and those whom I love. We are all familiar with the concept of “offering it up”, which can sometimes take on a negative tone. But when compared with tracking airline miles and “offering up” the exhaustion of our many travels in hopes of achieving a higher status as a passenger, why can’t we approach the difficulties of life with a similar optimism and hope? No airline mile is wasted, nor is any suffering or difficulty; it’s just one pays with dividends that are eternal, while the other can be disappointing. As we approach the great celebration of Easter, I wish you the kind of rewards that come from investing in the values and benefits that are eternal, and someday, I hope to see you in that great elite group of Saints, gathered with Mary Help of Christians, in the joy of being Salesian Family. A Salesian Sister for 73 years
Rest in Peace, Sr. Ruth Stecker
S
r. Ruth Stecker passed away on March 23 at the St. Joseph Provincial Center in Haledon, NJ. A Salesian Sister for 73 years, Sr. Ruth was 92 years old.
made them feel welcomed indeed. During the day, they camped with the boarders with whom Ruth made friends. In later years, those friends also became Salesian Sisters.
Born and raised in Richmond Hill, NY, Ruth was the second child of Kathryn and Philip Stecker. She recalled that her mother was always home and her father, a printer, would find his joy in spending time with his daughters. Their Christian home life was supplemented by the teaching at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, and attendance at parish functions was the order of the day.
After that summer, the kind Sisters invited the girls to attend their high school. Ruth’s four years at Mary Help of Christians Academy went from attending the school to answering her call to become a Salesian Sister. After graduation, she began her religious formation.
The summer of 1940 was the highpoint in 14-year-old Ruth’s life. She and her sister decided that they would like to go to camp. Mrs. Stecker saw an ad in The Tablet Catholic newspaper for the Salesian Sisters’ Camp Mother Mazzarello in North Haledon, NJ. The girls spent four weeks there, and the Sisters

Sr. Ruth received her undergraduate degree from Fordham University and her graduate degree from Seton Hall University. Over the years, she served the young lovingly and joyfully as a teacher, catechist, school principal, and community Animator in various schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Florida, Wisconsin, and Massachusetts. Students, parents, parishioners, and friends loved Sr. Ruth’s genuine
interest in their lives and her willingness to help and radiate God’s tenderness through her kindness. Her smile was her characteristic feature and became deeper and more meaningful with each passing year. Sr. Ruth is survived by her brother, Warren Stecker, of Newark, NJ. The Salesian Sisters extend their deepest condolences to Warren as they pray now for Sr. Ruth’s intercession as she receives her heavenly reward.
Eva M. Dunn, Mother of Sr. Karen
va M. Dunn, mother of Sr. Karen Dunn, FMA, passed away on March 17 in Haledon, NJ. She was 85 years old. Eva was born in Jersey City to James and Eva McGuire. As a young girl just out of high school, she worked in the secretarial pool for the Lehigh Valley Railroad, where she met her future husband, Andrew “Andy” Dunn. Andy was the Deputy Fire Chief in Point Lookout Long Island and took the fire department chief ’s car to pick Eva up on one of their first dates.
It’s rumored he had all the lights on while driving down Armstrong Avenue in Jersey City to let her know he was there to pick her up. They married in 1955 and enjoyed 37 years of a loving and faithful union blessed by four children: Michael Sean (who died in 2014), Andrew, Karen, and Patricia. Eva will be remembered as ardent, faith-filled, engaged, caring, and a devoted mother. For an Irish lady she made the best Italian meatballs and sauce, and also an awesome beef stew.

For years the family had a dog in the house, sometimes to the dismay of Andy. When one would pass, Eva would find another and gently insist when Andy protested. During the years after Andy’s passing in 1992, Eva rescued Cocker-Spaniels that brought her companionship on her walks in the neighborhood. The Salesian Sisters extend their deepest condolences and prayers to Sr. Karen and the extended family. Partners in Giving • Spring 2019 • 15

Without Good Friday, there can be no Easter
I
must admit I am glad Lent is almost over. As much as I love Advent, I loathe Lent. It’s not because I dislike fish or find the music and church décor somber, nor is it because its so long. It’s because I feel I’ve spent so much time hanging out with Jesus in the garden of sorrow and bearing the cross of suffering that I am ready for some celebration! I want a party that never ends! Sometimes I’d rather have my Heaven here than wait for what seems like a long time for the eternal party that is yet to begin. I can be impatient like that. Being Christian isn’t always easy! The Church is right to have us relive with Jesus the events that lead up to our own salvation and redemption. Lent is not meant to be a depressing season, but a time of introspection, renewed conversion, and greater dedication to discipleship.
But that is what conversion is all about – starting again. God doesn’t expect us to become Saints all at once; everything in creation grows in its own time, from the flowers, to the animals, to even human children. I should be patient with the slow growth that takes place in my soul each Lent, trusting that as I accept the sacrifices and sufferings that come each day, those I choose and those allowed in my daily life by God’s Providence, I grow in readiness for the eternal joy of Heaven.

SALESIAN SCHOOLS ! ST. JOHN NEUMANN HIGH SCHOOL, Naples, FL – “iServe Day” at St. John Neumann is an entire day devoted to getting our students out in their community to make a difference. On January 30, we had more than 170 students at 11 different locations working alongside our faculty members in various ways. From cleaning cages and comforting abandoned dogs at the Animal Shelter, to cleaning up Corkscrew Sanctuary and sorting foods at the Harry Chapin Food Bank, our students once again amazed us with their genuine desire to put the needs of others ahead of their own. “During iServe Day I believe I connected with the people I helped on a deeper level,” said sophomore Chris Baier, “and realized that at the end of the day we’re all in this life together.” IMMACULATA-LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL, Miami, FL – Students in the Communications Methodology Honors class learn how to research and identify an area of need within the community that also aligns with a particular passion of theirs, thereby driving their interest. They then work with community organizations to design a project. For example, students are working with “Health in the Hood” to engage community members around issues of food insecurity, food scarcity, and nutritional education in under-resourced neighborhoods. They volunteered one weekend to build a community garden (at right) and, in the future, plan to document and share stories about how food scarcity and food insecurity impact people’s lives. Talk about a real “growth” opportunity!

f you have seen the news, you have read about affluent families participating in elaborate illegal schemes to have their student admitted to nationally recognized universities. It is great news that these admission scams have been found out and I hope all admissions practices will be re-evaluated by every college and university. It is no secret that a huge donation can influence the acceptance of a possibly unqualified student. This practice is long and ongoing and hopefully will be looked into as well. In any
event, it is clear that many college admissions decisions are based not just on grades and test scores. What we know is that the dedication to learning and improvement that you demonstrate every day gave you a great education. That is and always will be the most valuable thing for your future. Take pride that you EARNED your college admissions and scholarships. Your time at Mary Help of Christians has provided you with the opportunity to attend a fine college suited for your individual and family goals. You can be proud that your effort, combined with caring and dedicated teachers along with family support, is the reason why you have succeeded in every aspect of your education and will in the future as well. SALESIAN SCHOOLS ! VILLA MADONNA SCHOOL, Tampa, FL – The second annual “Nun Run” to benefit Villa Madonna was held on March 23. Close to 300 runners enjoyed 5K and one-mile cross-country courses as they wound their way through the scenic Mary Help of Christians campus, with orange groves, wooded trails, horse pastures, open fields, and, most importantly “Rosie The Pig.” It was a great event for long-time runners as well as first-timers, all for a good cause!

VILLA MADONNA SCHOOL, Tampa, FL – The three-year-olds in EC3 enjoyed their new teachers, Thalia Vega and Diego Dominguez, during the annual Eighth-Grade Teach-In, an opportunity for older students to experience teaching for a day and connect with Villa’s younger members. They follow set lesson plans for the day, and teachers grade them on their professionalism and preparedness. The future looks to be in very good hands! The unexpected joy of detachment from social media
Learning to enjoy actual “Facetime” with Jesus
“D
o you miss having an iPhone?” was the most commonly asked question while I was at home on break after deciding to become a Salesian Sister, four months earlier. When I entered, I knew that I could keep some of my online profiles in order to keep contact with friends and family, but I wanted to free myself so that I could experience all that God had in store for me. When I returned for my first home visit, I realized that my friends had not gotten together even though they were close in proximity, and that it was my return that had prompted them to carve out time from their other commitments. I realized that I didn’t end up missing out on much, but instead, I grew closer to them because we had to be intentional about keeping in touch!
I didn’t realize how detaching from social media would also help me enjoy new relationships with the Sisters in my community. Most nights, we’re so engrossed in a card game or puzzle that we have to remind ourselves to

call and entering), I would’ve been otherwise preoccupied from joining one of my companions on a spontaneous walk or picking up new skills like guitar, Italian, and juggling. Outside of chapel, too, it is easier to notice and appreciate God’s surprises, like the explosion of colors in the sunrise and the multicolored array of autumn leaves. When we free ourselves up from taking a picture and posting it, we’re able to say “Good job, God!” and know that He wanted us to catch a glimpse of the beauty He prepared for us. The most wonderful benefit of detaching from technology is having a more stable and closer connection with Jesus Christ. It is easier to focus during prayer when you check the time on a watch and not on a smartphone that notifies you of all the text messages waiting for your reply! When my life was online, people could see the intermittent updates signaling how I was feeling. Now I have to take the time to “check in” by calling or writing. Likewise, my friends and family have to make the effort to catch up with me. This has allowed my relationships to be restored to their proper order.
