Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s Letter Dear Friends, Our Salesian founder, St. John Bosco, wrote, “It is not enough to love the young; they must know they are loved.” The radiant smile of Savannah, the precious girl on our cover, at Camp Mary Help in North Haledon, NJ, is all the assurance we Salesian Sisters need to know that we are fulfilling our mission to young people. As soon as the school year ended, we launched into full Salesian Summer Camp mode, allowing inner-city girls and boys to have a safe, wholesome, enriching, and – most of all – fun experience. And it was all made possible through your generosity! Thank you, once again! The BIG news to report is broadcast on the opposite page – at long last, we are ready to break ground for the new St. Joseph Chapel on the campus of Mary Help of Christians Academy! It’s been 15 months since the devastating fire, and thanks to your prayers and incredible generosity, we are ready to rebuild. The date for the groundbreaking is both auspicious and inspiring: September 14, the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross! We hope to see many of you at the groundbreaking, but an RSVP is required. Some of the Sisters met their Adopters in person for the first time. The Liturgy was greatly enhanced by the music and singing provided by our Salesian Sisters, Novices, Postulants, and Aspirants.
In addition to many Salesian Sisters, young women in formation, and family members of the Jubilarians, many members of the Salesian Family, collaborators, past pupils, friends, and benefactors were also present.
The festivities continued nearby at The Tides Estate where we shared as one big family in the joy of the day, as you will see on these pages. Our 16 Jubilarians have lived a total of 860 years of loving service to God, in the Church and in the Salesian Family, through our charism of bringing God’s love to all, especially to the young and their families. n Sunday, July 14, nearly 400 people gathered in the gym of Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon, NJ, for the start of our annual Jubilarian Celebration. The gym was fittingly transformed into a beautifully decorated place of worship. The main celebrant of the Mass was Bishop Manny Cruz of the Archdiocese of Newark, whose presence and words are always a gift! He was joined by 14 Salesian and diocesan priests and two deacons.

hen Sr. Louise Passero celebrated her 84th birthday on May 2, the candles on her cake set off the fire alarm at the St. Joseph Provincial Center! The firemen soon left as there was no fire, but the local Haledon police officers joined Sr. Louise as the party resumed. Now that’s a memorable birthday!

he Salesian Sisters Partners Circle was founded in 1991 to provide unrestricted funds for urgent needs of the Salesian Sisters and their mission. These include support for capital needs, scholarship assistance, technology upgrades, and funds for those unforeseen situations that require immediate attention. Your annual contribution to this fund empowers the Sisters to continue their mission: To Provide Financial Assistance and Volunteer Services to the Salesian Sisters and to the Young People in their Care for the Advancement of Education, Vocations, and Community Life. However, it reminded me that just about a year ago, I contacted you to ask for your prayers regarding our grandson, Dominick Francis, who was to undergo brain surgery for hydrocephalus, a condition he was born with and now was impacting his life. You responded immediately and, thankfully, Dominick responded beautifully to the shunt placed in his brain. He is growing and thriving! Dominick celebrated his first birthday on June 25 and, with that celebration, my husband and I would like to join your Partners Circle Quarter Century Club. Dear Friends: A message from Sister Joanne
The mystery ingredients of life
H
ave you ever seen the show on Food Network called Chopped Junior? I recently watched an episode, and it made me think of a quote I’ve heard many times from the Salesian Sisters in leadership: “Make bread with the flour you have.” In other words, with whatever ingredients, people, talents, or opportunities we have at our disposal, we can make anything work, if we have the right attitude. For those who are unfamiliar with Chopped Junior, three middle-schoolaged contestants are given “mystery” ingredients for each of three rounds, and must use them to prepare an appetizer, a main course, and a dessert. With each successive round, one contestant is eliminated, or “chopped.” By the end, one young person wins a $10,000 cash prize and the coveted Chopped Junior chef’s coat.

The compassion of her counselor really made her feel part of the group, and it freed her up to enjoy the joys of being a child at camp. I also heard of another young person who won $300 in a contest, and, instead of spending it on the latest gadget or fashions, saved it and used it to buy Christmas presents for children in need. When asked why, she said she found greater joy in making others smile than in acquiring more things.

Remembering a gentle and pure soul
“Frank is here, looking down from Heaven”
W
hen a woman joins the Salesian Sisters, she gains an international family. Not only is she transformed as a “sister” to 14,000 other Salesian Sisters, but her own family becomes part of the extended Salesian Family. On July 24, Salesian Sisters gathered at Wallace House in Oak Ridge, NJ, to honor the memory of Sr. Denise Sickinger’s brother, Frank A. Sickinger, II. Wallace House is a group home run by Catholic Charities for persons with developmental disabilities, and was Frank’s most recent home. Frank was known to most as “Frankie,” the man who loved riding on trains, eating steak, and had a ready smile. He had a peaceful and kind demeanor, often found holding the ice cream bowl for his friend Robert, so he could eat ice cream following a stroke. Frankie passed away suddenly, age 70, on Christmas Day 2017, while celebrating with our retired Sisters.
At the July 24 ceremony dedicating a plaque (above) at Wallace House in Frankie’s memory, Sr. Denise shared what the Department for Persons with Disabilities (DPD) and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Paterson meant to her family. “After Dad was hospitalized,
Frankie turned to me and said, ‘What is going to happen to me?’ It was a wake-up call for me. I am so grateful to the DPD and Catholic Charities who not only stepped in to help me create a plan for Frankie, but also make a home for him where he was treated with dignity and love for 17 years.” Many of Frankie’s caseworkers, residential counselors, and other members of the DPD were in attendance for the dedication, which was lead by Provincial Emeritus, Fr. Thomas Dunne, SDB. Moved by the gathering, attended by so many Sisters in support of Sr. Denise, Scott Milliken, CEO of Catholic Charities, called over one of the newer residents, Billy. Billy moved into Wallace House as Frankie moved out. miling through tears, Sr. Teresa Gutierrez and Sr. Maryann Schaefer joined the Rojas family to celebrate the life of Fernando Rojas, who passed away on May 23 in Ridgefield Park, NJ. All five of Fernando’s daughters are alumnae of Mary Help of Christians Academy: Clara, Ana, Diana, Beatrix, and Catalina. It was great and comforting to see old friends and past pupils, even under the sad circumstances.

Who doesn’t like getting “free” stuff?
D
o you love getting free stuff? I have to admit, I do. Whether it’s a food or drink sample, a free sticker, or even free admission to a museum, I am usually first in line. I love trying new things and giving my opinion about new products.
to Confession once a month, say two Rosaries a day and not say mean things about others… then I will be lovable to You, right?” I can almost feel God taking a deep sigh and rolling His eyes, mumbling to Himself, “What more do I have to do for them to get it?!”
I’ve cultivated a small network of vendors who will send me free things in exchange for my opinion. It’s a pretty lucrative arrangement, as I get items I need for ministry for free and they get my very intelligent and valuable opinion (ahem). It’s a win-win. My father used to say that my grandmother could “make a penny scream” by how she could stretch it, but I think I have improved upon her methods and can make a penny do yoga and find inner peace.
In Luke 6:35, Jesus gives us an example of free, or gratuitous, love that expects nothing in return: “Love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for He Himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.” Yikes. No negotiations? No contracts? Just freely given mercy and love? It’s a tall order that really challenges our ideas of what God is like.

he next time you see a tanker or container ship in a port, two alumnae of Mary Help of Christians Academy might just be the navigating officers in charge. Twins Catherine and Elizabeth Livi, class of 2015, graduated this spring from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Both earned Bachelor of Science degrees, commissions in the U.S. armed
forces, and a merchant marine officer license. The licenses mean they may serve on seafaring vessels. The majority of midshipmen will serve as Navy reservists while working aboard U.S. flag vessels. Others will serve on active duty in the armed forces. “Thank you to all the Salesian Sisters!” says their proud Mom, Marilyn. “Two new third mates are now sailing the ocean blue!”
ACADEMY OF OUR LADY, Marrero, LA – On May 14, Academy of Our Lady celebrated its 12th Baccalaureate Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Marrero, and commencement exercise at the Alario Center in Westwego. Diplomas were awarded to 101 graduates by Principal Sr. Michelle Geiger. Dr. RaeNell Houston, Superintendent of Catholic Schools of Archdiocese of New Orleans, addressed the graduates. The Class of 2019 earned a total of $5,423,632 in scholarships. Two of Academy of Our Lady’s most prestigious awards were presented by Sr. Michelle at the commencement ceremony. The Fiat Voluntas Tua (“Thy will be done”) Award is the highest honor presented to a graduate whose life of character, service, leadership and school spirit reflects openness to God’s plan for her and for all those she encounters. The 2019 Fiat Voluntas Tua Award was presented to Gianna Ezeb (right, above), of Gretna, LA. The 2019 Golden Scepter Award recipient was Megan Dufrene (right) of Westwego, for completing more than 900 hours of service. The Golden Scepter Award reflects the image of Mary under the title of “Help of Christians.” Although each graduate is required to fulfill 75 hours of service, the Golden Scepter Award honors a graduate who has gone over and above the required hours. SALESIAN YOUTH CENTER/BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, Tampa, FL – Smiles all ‘round the 5 & 6-year-old room at the Salesian Youth Center, as campers show off their Play-Doh creations! The Summer Camp season kicked off on June 10 with 150 kids ranging in age from 5 to 18. Salesian Camp offers inner-city children a place to call their own, allowing them to flourish and grow as they spend time having fun. Activities include arts and crafts, computer lessons, dancing, field trips, guest presentations, literacy, mentoring, music, robotics, and outside fun including the playground, sports, and water play. Some of the staff members are former SYC kids who have returned to help make a difference. Thank you to all who make our SYC Summer Camp a reality! VILLA MADONNA SCHOOL, Tampa, FL – Recently, the Perez Family won a bowling party for their hard work and efforts in fundraising for Villa Madonna’s annual Spirit Run that raised funds for new LED lights. The Perez children invited a bunch of friends, and Sr. Rosemary Cordes had a “ball” playing against them (it looks as if she may have bowled a strike!). Below, Villa eighth-grader Skylar Hollingshed and her father volunteered to help beautify the lobby of the school. New marble chips replaced the old mulch around the statue of Mary Help of Christians, giving her a fresh look as the first day of school is just around the corner. Thank you, Hollingsheds!

Mary Help students reap fundraising rewards

he Dames of Mary Help, the dynamic fundraising group for Mary Help of Christians Academy, are pleased to announce the distribution of more than $43,000 in financial aid awards for the 202021 school year. This was made possible through the generosity of our donors and the success of the “Sip & Shop” in May. This year, the Mary Help Senior class made an appearance. Each young woman participated in a fashion show (right) sponsored by Bloomingdales. What a great way for everyone to see how the girls have grown with the love and support they have received! Next year they’re off to college. Each prosperous event leads to more young women being afforded the opportunity to attend Mary Help and receive the gift of a superb education.

hildren at the Salesian Youth Center in Tampa, FL, were mesmerized by Darren Liebman when he played the didgeridoo, a wooden trumpet “drone pipe” which was developed in Australia over 1,500 years ago. Darren, from the entertainment and education company Didgeridoo Down Under, offered the SYC kids a memorable presentation of music, culture, science, and comedy, as well as lessons in character building and anti-bullying.
