Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s Letter Dear Friends, It’s a safe bet to say that on September 14, the hearts of Salesian Sisters across our Province of St. Joseph were bursting with joy and gratitude just a bit more than usual. For it was not only one of the great feast days of the Catholic Church – the Exaltation of the Holy Cross – but it was also the day chosen for the Ceremonial Groundbreaking of our new Chapel at Mary Help of Christians Academy, as captured on our cover. Some 16 months after the tragic fire, our hopes and prayers have been answered, thanks in large part to your generosity. Now the building begins! Enjoy the story and photos on pages 3-6. Another powerful symbol of hope can be found in Vocations. Many fine young women are on the journey to become a Salesian Sister. They are the future of our Order, and we are truly blessed! Ground broken for the new St. Joseph Chapel Editor’s note: The following article on the September 14 groundbreaking ceremony was written by Michael Wojcik, News Editor of The Beacon, the newspaper of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Paterson, NJ. We thank Michael for the superb reporting, and The Beacon for great coverage! NORTH HALEDON – The shock and sorrow that the Salesian Sisters of St. Joseph Province experienced 16 months ago gave way to joy on the afternoon of September 14. On that perfect late summer day, the Salesians broke ground for the new St. Joseph Chapel here to replace the former chapel – lovingly called “the heart” of the Province and of Mary Help of Christians Academy (MHCA) here – which was destroyed by a four-alarm fire on May 18, 2018.

A jubilant community, which included Salesian Sisters; school staff, alumni, students and parents; benefactors; local clergy; and diocesan and local officials, turned out for the groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the building project – the result of the Salesian Sisters’ resolve to rebuild following the devastating fire. The new 15,000-square-foot chapel will occupy the same footprint as the old building but will benefit from a few improvements. The new 500-seat building will sport a more contemporary architectural design and be more energy efficient. It also will hold a new expanded area for music ministry and a new Peragallo Pipe organ to replace the one melted in the fire, said Jimmy Black, an associate principal of Acheson Doyle Partners Architects, the firm that designed the new chapel. “This groundbreaking gives us the hope that our new chapel will become a reality. Our dream is that it will be in the not-too-distant future,” Sr. Joanne Holloman, Provincial, said, thanking everyone who supported the Salesians through this difficult time period. “Our prayer is that Jesus, Joseph, and Mary protect this endeavor. May all those who have begun this labor of

Yet, no one was harmed and the firefighters were able to rescue the most precious item in the chapel: the Tabernacle. On that day, Sr. Marisa DeRose called the destruction of the chapel “a loss to the family of both Mary Help and the Salesian Sisters.”

“It was the heart of both the campus and the school. It was a place where we went in happy moments and in moments of sadness. It has seen us grow. Many of our girls walked by the chapel on the morning that the fire happened and began to cry. The great loss of this chapel of memories is heartbreaking,” Sr. Marisa said. The groundbreaking featured six dignitaries, who each scooped up some soil and threw it with a ceremonial shovel from a small patch of dirt that was brought from the chapel further up the hill to the front of Sacred Heart Hall, where the ceremony took place. The soil will be brought back to the site of the former chapel, which has yet to be demolished. Once it is razed, construction will begin. It is expected to take a year and a half to complete the new chapel, said Sr. Mary Rinaldi, director of the Salesians’ Development Office.

On that afternoon, several dignitaries spoke, including Sr. Mary, who called the event “the moment of faith and hope for the new chapel.” North Haledon Mayor Randy George pledged the borough’s continued support for the construction project and the Salesian Sisters. Dennis Clair, chair of the Salesian Sisters’ Partners Circle National Board of Trustees, said the fire and subsequent rebuilding show that “God has bigger and better plans that are moving along.” Salesian Fr. James Heuser, president of Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, praised the Sisters’ faith as they “bowed their heads [to God] and said ‘We will rebuild,’” before he blessed a medallion of St. Joseph, patron of the Province, which will be incorporated into the chapel’s foundation, and blessed the construction site.

One student, Brianna Robinson, a senior, told The Beacon that she was “upset” with news of the fire, because she enjoyed attending Adoration and Mass in the former chapel, which gave her a “comforting feeling.” “I’m happy that the chapel will be rebuilt. Vocations: FIRST PROFESSION – Sr. Rachel Lauritsen, Sr. Boram Lee, and Sr. Marie Fe Tansioco professed their First Vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience before Bishop Manny Cruz at St. Anthony’s Church in Hawthorne, NJ, on August 5. First Profession culminates the first four years of the vocational journey to become a Salesian Sister. “Four years of class, study, prayer, work, play, reflection, and learning to live community life flew by in the blink of an eye,” says Sr. Rachel. “I found, after professing vows, I had a smile on my face that I just could not wipe off, and my face did not hurt. There was a joy in my heart that was carrying me. The joy of knowing I am now an FMA, a Daughter of Mary Help of Christians, totally belonging to Christ for good of the young. Coupled with that joy was a sense of gratitude to God that I was surrounded by my Sisters, family and friends. And gratitude to each of them for their love, support, and prayers on the journey to First Profession.”

I am being challenged by obedience: to surrender my will for the Will of God, to accept the guidance of my Formator, essentially to trust! But most of all, as I take these baby steps in Religious Life, I am realizing that I am held in the arms of my Father; I am guided by my Mother, Mary; and I am seeking the face of my Beloved.”

I’ve worked with many young people uring the month of October, we celebrate over the years and it’s always amazing many Saints who, in big or small ways, built to watch God transform them up the Church, the Body of Christ, and who through a relationship with Himself. These include support for capital needs, scholarship assistance, technology upgrades, and funds for those unforeseen situations that require immediate attention. The award was given for his contributions to the Club and community at large. “Jinite” is a Spanish word originating in the 12th century to describe someone who was chivalrous, courteous, brave, a defender of his King, his religion, and the distressed, especially women. get distracted easily in the Provincial House chapel. If you haven’t been there, it has large windows through which we often see deer, foxes, squirrels, and especially birds foraging for snacks and squabbling with each other. Occasionally a neighborhood cat will slink by like a ninja. One time when I was out there, I almost stepped on a rather put-out groundhog, whom I apparently snuck up on while he was snacking on dandelions.

n September 8, the Past Pupils of the Salesian Sisters gathered in St. Joseph Chapel at the Provincial House to be inducted into the International Federation of the Past Pupils of the Salesian Sisters, which has approximately 45,000 members throughout the world and is a group of the Salesian Family. Fr. Tom Dunne, SDB, and Sr. Denise Sickinger, Provincial Delegates of the Salesian Family, joined Sr. Teresa Gutierrez and Sr. Maryann Schaefer for induction ceremony. The group is 36 members strong, but only those pictured could be present. The Union of Mary Help of Christians – St. Joseph Province – is born! We are proud of those past pupils from Haiti, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Arizona, Florida and New Jersey who have committed themselves to be the Hands of the FMA in the world. SALESIAN SCHOOLS ! VILLA MADONNA SCHOOL, Tampa, FL – After hearing of the devastation in the Bahamas from Hurricane Dorian, Villa Madonna’s National Junior Honor Society decided to organize a fundraiser to help the people in the Bahamas. Students collected items on the “needs to be sent” list including non-perishable foods, water, and personal care items, especially bandages and ointments. $3,900.00 was raised! Elijah, grade 7, wrote this special letter to his principal, Sr. Mary Jackson, offering his allowance to help the people in need. How beautiful! Below, Villa kindergarten and first graders have fun playing the ukulele after school. With only four strings, the instrument is easier for little hands to hold than a full-size guitar, and so offers a great introduction for young children to appreciate the musical world. Let the strumming begin!

he Thanksgiving Basket, the annual fundraiser for the Villa Madonna Campus in Tampa, FL, be held on Saturday, November 23, on campus. It’s always a fun and festive occasion with a huge silent auction and a delicious sitdown dinner provided by Richard Gonzmart and Columbia Restaurant. IMMACULATA–LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL, Miami, FL – The Salesian Youth Movement in Miami kicked off with an Alumni Back to School Barbeque hosted at Immaculata La Salle. The event provided the opportunity for students to reconnect with each other and share in a day of community and Salesian spirit! There was food and an open gym where the alumni were able to play volleyball and basketball, as well as chat with teachers (including Sr. Clare Kennelly) who came to show their support. The movement is looking to continue to expand through more events such as community dinners and service projects that will eventually include all the Salesian Schools in Florida.
ST. JOHN NEUMANN HIGH SCHOOL, Naples, FL – Team bonding at St. John Neumann occurs both on and off the field. Through service to their community, student athletes grow both individually and as a team. This summer, the Celtic football team in particular focused not only on preparing for their upcoming season, but on giving back to their community. Several members of the team joined their classmates for a week-long service trip to Immokalee, FL, to deliver food (above), sort goods at the Salvation Army, paint houses, and tutor children. Students took another break from summer workouts to join Habitat for Humanity at a new worksite in Naples. Lastly, they held a two-day project with Friends of Foster Children Forever on campus to pack 500 backpacks with donated school supplies and uniforms for local foster children. Over the course of three months of summer vacation, the Celtic Football Team completed over 500 hours of community service together. Now that’s a winning performance!

ongratulations to Danielle Parks, Mary Help of Christians Academy Class of 2015, who has been accepted into the Peace Corps and is heading to Cameroon this fall. Danielle graduated this year from The College of New Jersey with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. Danielle, 22, of Paterson, NJ, sees the Peace Corps as an opportunity to travel the world, learn a new language, and immerse herself in a new culture. “The chance to serve in Cameroon is particularly special to me because I learned from the AncestryDNA test that a majority of my ancestry is located in this country,” she says. “To live where my ancestors may have lived truly will be an eye-opening and transformative experience. It reinforces the idea that we are global citizens
