Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s Letter Dear Friends: Gaze for a moment at the statue on our cover. “Our Lady Queen of the World” was donated to Mary Help of Christians Academy by the Knights of Columbus, who dedicated it to our students. It stood at the entrance to St. Joseph Chapel, and was the first thing our students saw through the window as they walked to the chapel. The devastating fire on May 18 which destroyed the chapel interior spared this statue. Mary’s face, outstretched hands, and robes are singed from smoke, yet her golden crown shines bright. Could there be a more powerful sign of Hope? We have Heavenly protection. Amid the horror of everything in the chapel being completely destroyed, our prayers have been answered. The fire could have been much worse. Had it happened just four hours later, the chapel would have been filled with Sisters at Morning Prayer. Thank God no one was hurt.

Tucked inside were two items precious to me: a 1959 photograph of my Dad (the last taken of him), and a handwritten letter from my greatgreat-uncle, Blessed Philip Rinaldi, to my grandparents in 1929 (shown at left). That these and any paper items survived the inferno is nothing short of miraculous – and more signs of Hope. The long rebuilding process has already begun. Thankfully, we have learned that insurance will cover most of the loss, although there will still be many expenses to cover. Donations have been pouring in from family, friends, and alumni. As we close another school year, counting our many blessings, we need your help to fund another successful Summer Camp season for our kids (please see page 23). Fire Destroys Our Chapel; No One Hurt

he fire alarm went off in St. Joseph Chapel at Mary Help of Christians Academy in North Haledon, NJ at 1:29 a.m. on May 18. The four-alarm blaze brought responses from the fire departments of North Haledon, Hawthorne, Franklin Lakes, and Paterson municipalities, and was finally extinguished around 4:00 a.m. No one was inside when the fire occurred, and the cause is still under investigation. Originally built in 1976 and extensively renovated in 2016 (thanks to the generosity of our many friends), our chapel sustained devastating damage to its interior and structure. Functioning as the heart of the Academy as well as the center of activities for the St. Joseph Province of the Salesian Sisters, the chapel is where students convene for all major events and where they gather regularly for worship and prayer. Though our hearts are heavy, we are fortunate to be able to report that no one was harmed and that firemen were able to rescue the most precious item in the chapel: the tabernacle.

During a morning assembly led by Mary Help Principal, Sr. Marisa DeRose, our community wept as photos of the charred altar, pews, and melted Peragallo Pipe Organ were shared, along with a warning to students to keep far from the building. The Sisters, students, faculty, and staff are devastated by this loss, but remain thankful to the dedicated firemen who contained the fire before it could cause additional damage to our facilities. A testament to the strength of our community, the first donation to help rebuild the chapel was received from a faculty member before the school day had even started; upon hearing about the blaze on the fire scanner radio, she was immediately moved to help.

Finding Beauty in the Tragedy

hen we made our final Sign of the Cross after Evening Prayer on May 17, none of us thought that it would be the last time we would pray together in our beautiful St. Joseph Chapel. In the days following the fire, we Sisters took turns salvaging what we could: charred prayer books and Bibles, consecrated chalices and ciboriums, as well as vestments and handmade banners. Over forty years of our history as a Province and school were sorted as we rescued what we could, as little as it was.

Mary Shows Us the Way Dear Friends ... A Message from Sr. Joanne

wice a day the Salesian Sisters in our Province pray the prayer taught by Blessed Maria Romero to her companions: “Mary our Mother, go before us to show us the way.” We began praying this prayer as we worked on the unification of the Canadian and Eastern United States Provinces, and it’s since become a beloved staple of our daily devotions to Our Lady. As Salesian Sisters, we often experienced the providential care of our heavenly Mother as we followed her though the foundation of our Province, the opening of many houses and ministries, and our Sisters’ missionary efforts around the world. As the tapestry of life is woven of both light and dark moments, which lend richness to our story and wisdom to our experiences, Mary Help of Christians has made her presence known to us not only in periods of expansion and joy, but also times of consolidation and loss. Many of our friends and benefactors know of the 41 years of vital work our Sisters have done at the (Camp) Auxilium School in Newton, NJ. From the very beginning, our Sisters, joined by countless skilled educators who formed the C.A. family, welcomed God’s little ones and nurtured their development in an atmosphere of joy and faith. With the changing demographics and needs of the area, paired with its consistently decreasing enrollment, we have determined that Mary our Mother is leading us to repurpose the Auxilium Early Childhood Center into a new ministry, effective June 13. We are

still discussing what its new ministry will be and appreciate your prayers and support as we discern where Mary our Mother is leading us. The summer camp run from the grounds of the school, Camp Auxilium, will continue as a vibrant outreach of the Salesian Sisters for the local community. We are grateful to our Sisters, families, benefactors and friends who are a part of the Auxilium School story; generations of children are better adults, and our world a better place, because of your sacrifices and love.

“Twice a day the Salesian Sisters in our Province pray the prayer taught by Blessed Maria Romero to her companions: ‘Mary our Mother, go before us to show us the way.’” On May 18, Mary our Mother also went before the Sisters to protect them from a very serious fire that destroyed the chapel at Mary Help of Christians Academy. The four-alarm fire was early enough in the morning to prevent the Sisters from being present in the building when it broke out. We are grateful to the brave firefighters who responded to the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the school and convent. Although everything in the chapel, from pews and piano to the beautiful Peragallo pipe organ, were melted and destroyed, not one life was lost. We know that buildings can be replaced and are hopeful that with your help we can rebuild and restore the chapel that serves not only as the

gathering place for the students, families, faculty, and staff of Mary Help, but also as the heart of our Province activities. Our Lady’s attention has also turned to the Canadian part of our Province, as her footsteps lead us to accept a new ministry in Surrey, British Columbia, opening on August 24. Within the past seven years we have had three young women join us from Surrey and become Salesian Sisters, indicating that the Holy Spirit is inviting us to extend the branches of our Province into Western Canada. We hope that working in this new diocese will inspire more vocations to the religious life, especially Salesian consecrated life. As a part of our wider Salesian family, I am sure that the news of the closing of Auxilium School, the devastation of the chapel fire, and the joy of the new house in Surrey must be felt by all of you. I invite you to join us in our daily prayer, asking for Our Heavenly Mother’s guidance, confident that as she has faithfully led us, she will also lead you. As your Sisters, we look to you for support, prayer, and friendship as we forge ahead along the path Our Lady is indicating. Together, let us pray, “Mary our Mother, go before us to show us the way.” A blessed and rest-filled summer! Be sure of my prayers for you and your intentions. Please pray for me, my friends! r. Frances was born in the little coal-mining town of Pittstown, PA. When the family moved to Paterson, NJ, Sr. Frances met the Salesian Sisters at St. Michael’s School. One year after their mother’s death, the girls in the family went to the Sisters’ house in North Haledon. This was a big help to their father who needed to find better care for them. Sr. Frances says the love and care of the Sisters was “outstanding.”

r. Amelia came to the United States from Castions, Di Strada, Italy, together with Sr. Josephine Galassi, the Provincial Superior at that time. She was here to learn English because she was destined, at that time, to be a missionary in India.

r. Micheline was born in Champlain, Québec, Canada. She completed her high school and teacher training with the Salesian Sisters, and taught in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York for ten years. She returned to Canada and assisted in PointeVerte, New Brunswick, and in Montréal before taking up teaching again for 18 years. On her retirement in 2003 Sr. Micheline was assigned as the provincial bursar for nine years.

There Frances’ FMA vocation began to grow. When she expressed the wish to become one, there was some controversy among the relatives. Her grandmother took her side and said, “Let her try.” And so Sr. Frances became part of the daily service to the young as a capable and loving teacher, especially in the primary grades. With trust and confidence in St. John Bosco’s system of education, Sr. Frances has taught and served as principal in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Rhode Island, Wisconsin, and Florida. Everywhere she went, she left the feeling of love and caring that she herself had experienced.

While here, Sr. Amelia put all her learning skills to task, learning much from the Sisters who cooked or took care of the sick. She even shared the night shift with two other Sisters. As you can imagine, Sr. Amelia never saw India. Her mission land was right here on this continent. It was not long before Sr. Amelia was sent to Canada, where she brought her enthusiasm to the new ministries begun there. Later she returned to Haledon, NJ, where she has spent most of her Salesian life as an angel of service and care to our elderly and infirm Sisters in the St. Joseph Provincial Center. It seems that as the years continue to roll along, Sr. Amelia picks up a new energy in her step. She is a blessing to her ministry. Dear Sr. Amelia, God bless your 65th Jubilee!

In addition to teaching, Sr. Micheline served her community as animator, bursar, assistant at the oratory, teacher, catechism coordinator, and as the FMA delegate for the English and French Salesian Cooperators. Sr Micheline writes, “For these sixty years of consecrated life my heart is full of joy and gratitude! I am very thankful to my mother, to God, to St. Joseph and to Mary, Notre-Dame-du-Cap. She is very special to me with her loving presence, looking at me and leading me in fidelity to the charism of Don Bosco and Mother Mazzarello in my FMA mission.”

r. Agatha was born in Brooklyn, NY, on November 2, 1938. Her mother would say that All the Saints brought her! Her immigrant parents searched for a good high school for Agatha and her sister, Laura, and found Mary Help of Christians Academy. Sr. Teresa Casaro was the local Superior at that time. Agatha was so attracted to her wonderful, kind, and caring person that her vocation as an FMA began to blossom. Sr. Agatha says that her life as a Salesian Sister has always been one of educational and spiritual growth. She has always felt God’s help and guidance during difficulties. Her varied ministries have included teacher, principal, local animator, and Provincial Economer, when she worked with the Council on “The House that Love Built,” our new St. Joseph Provincial Center in Haledon, NJ. Now in these later years, Sr. Agatha feels her energy waning and her memory faulty, but she still keeps her serenity and kind character, ever looking for ways to help those she lives with.

r. Eileen was the 13th of 14 children born in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Canada. Orphaned at the age of two, she was adopted by her loving grandparents in Pointe Verte, where at the age of 18 she answered God’s call to religious life. Sr Eileen recalls, “It was during my second year as a teacher in public schools that I was invited by the Salesian Sisters to give a ‘helping hand’ at the oratory, and it was through the joy and loving kindness of the Sisters that I was drawn to the Salesian way of life. The joy of having the daily opportunity to make Jesus known and followed by the young people I encountered in my life through teaching has been a great fulfillment for me.”

orn in Queens, NY, Sr. Rosemary was the second of eight children. Her parents created a loving, understanding, and peaceful home environment for their children. Respect and concern for others were stressed, and there was always an air of “peaceful busyness.” Rosemary attended Catholic schools and there grew especially in her love for Mary. This love still shines in her words and in her eyes when Sr. Rosemary talks of Mary in her life and in her vocation.

Sr. Eileen has been a catechist on an Indian reserve in Canada for seven years; a teacher and principal at Sts. Peter and Paul Parish in San Francisco, CA, and St. Anthony Parish in Paterson, NJ; Dean of Residents at Mary Help of Christians Academy; and the Provincial of the Preprovince of Notre-Dame-du-Cap in Canada.

It was through the kindness of Sr. Helen Mazurek, FMA that Rosemary began to realize that she also was meant to be a Salesian Sister. Sr. Helen accompanied her through the discerning process. Her made her first profession in 1968. Sr. Rosemary’s many teaching assignments brought her to New Jersey, New York, and, currently, at Villa Madonna School in Tampa, FL. Quiet and unassuming, Sr. Rosemary still fulfills her mission among God’s children with enthusiasm and cheerfulness.

40th Anniversary

r. Joanne was born in Atlantic City, NJ, the first of four children. Since her father was Catholic and her mother was Jewish, Joanne received most of her religious upbringing from her father’s mother and from the Salesian Sisters at St. Michael School. She spent much of her spare time in the school playground or at the Sisters’ residence. Their cheerfulness influenced her greatly and she wanted to go to high school with the same Sisters. Her parents agreed and chose Mary Help of Christians Academy. After graduation in 1974, Joanne began her initial formation. Sr. Joanne has taught and served as principal in Salesian schools in Florida and New Jersey. She displayed the same warmth and accompaniment toward others as the Novice Directress at Sacred Heart Center in Newton, NJ. We are blessed now by Sr. Joanne’s leadership as Superior of the Province of St. Joseph. We pray for her daily, that our dear Blessed Mother will continue to inspire and give her the courage in the demands of this mandate.

oming from a Protestant family background, and being a member of the Girl Scouts in a Jewish temple, exposed Sr. Kim to all types of people in all walks of life. Her greatest peace and happiness, though, was found in the Catholic

Church when, at the age of 13 she asked to be baptized. At Mary Help of Christians Academy, Kim was greatly influenced working side by side with the Sister responsible for the Mission Club. Her enthusiasm and dedication, and Kim’s desire to work with youth, especially in the missions, inspired her to become a Salesian Sister. She made her profession in 1978 and worked as a teacher and took part in parish activities for 10 years. In 1988, she left for Rome to begin her mission training, and was sent to Zambia and Kenya. Today Sr. Kim is principal of Immaculata-LaSalle in Miami, FL. As in the foreign missions, she knows she is there to be a sign of hope and witness to young adults.

r. Lise writes, “I was born and raised in Montréal, Canada, in a very loving and devoted Catholic family. I met the Salesian Sisters in elementary school, and remained friendly with them through my high school and college years. I felt that working with young people was life-giving. St. John Bosco’s method of education was very appealing to me. “I decided to enter the Salesian Order in 1974. Little did I know that the formation house would be in the United States, and that my formation would be in English! My parents supported my decision. Their only desire was my happiness. “I have been a teacher in Florida, a principal in Louisiana, and a teacher and principal in New Jersey and New York. Today I am president of Corpus ChristiHoly Rosary School in Port Chester, NY. “It is amazing that 40 years have gone by and I still have a great passion for education! St. John Bosco’s words remain my life’s motto: ‘Education is a Matter of the Heart.’”

r. Michelle writes, “As Mother Mazzarello said, ‘Time passes quickly.’ And as I reflect on the past 25 years, I am filled with gratitude for the many people who have enriched my life. The support of my family has been an immeasurable blessing. The many Sisters I have lived with have shown me what Salesian holiness is. Their wisdom, shared in word and deed, has been a source of edification. “And I think of all the young people I have had the privilege to journey with and am filled with gratitude. Rest in Peace, Maryann Harkins

aryann E. Harkins, beloved wife of 47 years of Partners Circle Trustee Robert Harkins, passed away on April 30 following a lengthy illness. She was 74. When Maryann and Robert received a special award at the Partners Circle Ball in 2006, their daughter, Elizabeth, told the story of their courtship: “My Mom, Maryann, was born in Newark. She met my Dad in 1968. They would see each other every day at the mailbox outside the building where they both worked, and eventually struck up a conversation. My grandparents would be exhausted after working all day, and would be anxious to get home. For weeks, they couldn’t figure out why it would take my Dad so long to put the mail in the mailbox! After a short time they realized he must be talking to that cute little blonde who worked downstairs! “They married in 1970. Their first home was in Westwood, where we children were born: Kathaleen, Caroljeanne, Robert, and me. If that house could talk, you would hear our first words, first steps, and all the laughter of many birthdays and holidays. It was a house we all loved. “My sisters and brother are very fortunate to have the wonderful parents that we do. We all want to make our Mom and Dad proud – that is the only way we can repay them for all they have done for us and taught us! We love you and are very proud that you are so caring and loving to us and to so many other people.” A member of Most Blessed Sacrament Parish in Franklin Lakes, NJ, Maryann was active in the Dames of Mary Help fundraising group. She was an avid New York Yankees and Giants fan, and a loving grandmother to Dylan and Kayla. Her warmth, kindness, generosity, and ever-smiling face will be missed by all. The Salesian Sisters extend their deepest condolences and prayers to Robert and all the family.

Shelley Raley, heart of Neumann High

n 2011, when the Salesian Sisters first took administration of St. John Neumann High School in Naples, FL, I was a newly-professed Salesian Sister. I was still trying to master the art of wearing my veil when I met theology teacher and campus minister, Shelley Raley. Whereas some may have looked at the three invading religious Sisters with an eye of suspicion, Shelley welcomed us with open arms and a warm heart. I remember standing in her classroom, looking around at all the newspaper clippings she had hung up on her closet door. I asked her what they were and she said, “Oh, I like to follow my past students and their accomplishments. It reminds me to pray for them and when they come to visit they like to see themselves on the door.” I knew, in that moment, that Shelley was not a typical teacher, but a true educator who loved her students deeply. I was blessed to work alongside her and to learn from her for three years. Her sudden diagnosis with stage IV esophageal cancer, following what everyone thought was just an inconvenient cold, was a horrible shock. One of my last contacts with her was a text that I was praying for her and loved her; she responded in kind. Her last Facebook post, directed to all of her friends, summed up the general way she lived her life with an open heart towards all, declaring, “I love you all!!!”, always with ample exclamation marks to drive home the point. She passed away on April 29, age 40. Vincent John Lonzone, Class of 2011, recalled the school’s first Salesian Retreat run by Shelley. “The transformation I experienced while on that trip was one that continues to impact me,” he said. “Ms. Raley journeyed with us into uncharted waters and helped guide us into the spiritual journey that was ahead of us. I was completely broken down and rebuilt from the ground up. Thank you, Ms. Raley, for showing me the strength and ability I had to transform into a more peaceful and spiritual person.” So much more could be said about Shelley Raley, her accomplishments as a graduate of Notre Dame who eventually returned to St. John Neumann as an educator, the same school she had attended as a teenager. he Dames of Mary Help, the fundraising group for Mary Help of Christians Academy, held their second annual “Sip & Shop” at the Indian Trail Club in Franklin Lakes, NJ on May 10. The room buzzed with excitement as more than 175 ladies shopped for a good cause: all vendors donated back 20% of the sales made that evening which go towards financial aid. On a more bittersweet note, we remembered our dear friend and Dame, Rosemary DePinto, who passed away last year. She would have beamed with pride and admiration to see how successful the evening was for the Dames!

or the past 16 years, the Baldor family of Tampa, FL, has presented the Ana Maria Auxilium Awards to more than 175 deserving students at two schools, Mary Help of Christians Academy (right) and Villa Madonna School (below). Students are awarded full one-year scholarships for being good Christians and honest citizens, and active participants in their school, parish, and community. As such, they exemplify the values of Ana Maria Baldor-Bunn, who passed away at a young age after a heroic battle with cancer, in which she gave her own life to save that of her unborn son. Family members were present to bestow this year’s awards, including Ana Maria’s brother, Javier (a past Chairman of the Salesian Sisters Partners Circle); her mother, Liana Baldor; and her son, William Bunn. Thank you, Baldor family, for allowing Ana Maria’s spirit to continue to shine on through the children at our Salesian schools!

“Camp Auxilium had a special charm” Editor’s note: On April 17 the Salesian Sisters announced the closure of The Auxilium School (also known as Camp Auxilium) in Newton, NJ, at the end of this school year. The preschool was founded 41 years ago. Changing demographics, declining enrollment, and a lack of funds prompted the difficult decision. The summer camp program, however, will continue. We invited Donna Meisinger, our longest-serving teacher, to share her memories.

ot many educators can say that their entire teaching career was at one school. But I can! I am very proud of Camp Auxilium and the families that have passed through. Thirty-five years ago, I was a brand new teacher ready to share my creative ideas and passion for young learners. I went on several interviews but chose Camp Auxilium. The campus was a dream country club for little children. I began teaching three-year-olds under the supportive guidance of Sr. Mary Rinaldi. She allowed me to use my creativity and newly-learned strategies. Camp Auxilium had a special charm that appealed to all. When you walked through the front doors Sr. Mary and later Sr. Lou Ann Fantauzza opened their hearts and arms to greet you. Your financial situation or status in the community did not matter. You could feel the sincerity of their Salesian Spirit. I only planned to stay one year – but I was bitten by the Salesian bug! I knew immediately that I wanted to teach here, send my own children here, and become the type of teacher that could exemplify that same spirit. I taught kindergarten for 28 years. I loved the three-year-olds but I had found my niche. It was so rewarding

to teach boys and girls to read. It was a wonderful feeling to see the light go on when reading begins. I helped students grow socially and emotionally, become strong public speakers, and support

traditional Christmas Show. My own grown children always came to the Christmas shows. I’m happy that my grandchildren experienced the last one.

My kids still have friends from camp. Friendships made at camp are strong and long lasting. Camp is the place to gather, mingle and build relationships with fellow parents. It is the best in the county. Our parents are one of a kind.

It makes me smile when we reminisce over stories of papier-mache heads, picnics, graduations, quilts, Tricky Tray fun, trips to Race Farms, Land of Make Believe, water parks, riding around Camp to look at the Christmas light decorations, and our

But God has a plan for us all and I will await my next mission. Salesian Youth Report IMMACULATA-LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL, MIAMI, FL – Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Orlando held a listening session with 70 students from eight Florida Catholic high schools, including Immaculata-La Salle, on April 25. This was part of his preparation for the Synod on “Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment,” called by Pope Francis and to be held in Rome in October. Students were asked how the Church could improve its mission to assist young people to be engaged, active Catholics. Discussion topics included youth groups, mission trips, family outreach, social media, and serving as lectors, ushers, and Eucharistic ministers during the celebration of the Mass.

ACADEMY OF OUR LADY, MARRERO, LA – Academy faculty member Joseph Bordlee (center) is the winner of Barnes & Noble’s My Favorite Teacher Contest! Senior Calli Nguyen nominated Mr. Bordlee by submitting an essay detailing how influential he has been throughout her high school education. “His remarkable teaching has reassured me that I can, as he would say, ‘Rock on!’ and reach my full potential,” Calli wrote. An educator for 28 years, Mr. Bordlee currently teaches English 8, English IV Dual Enrollment, English V and Yearbook. The founder of Losurdo Foods, Inc., of Hackensack, NJ, Michael is the father of Maria Losurdo, company secretary/treasurer and chairwoman of the Dames of Mary Help. “Michael’s expertise, charisma, and humor made the learning experience so much more enjoyable for the girls,” says Home Economics teacher Frank LaMendola.
