Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s letter Dear Friends, After a year’s hiatus, as we all emerge from pandemic restrictions, our Summer Camps are back and ready to welcome boys and girls in four states! On our cover, Sr. Janet Keller and youngsters at Villa Madonna School express the wholesome fun and excitement that lie ahead. Please help us make this happen! See page 3. There is much joy and, I fear, some sorrow in this issue. Happiness for our Jubilarian Sisters and their inspiring 700 years of service (see pages 6-9), but sadness over the passing of two towering figures: Sr. Inez Molano and Joe Garcia. May they rest in peace (see page 15). We are looking forward to celebrating 60 years of Camp Auxilium Summer Camp this autumn. at’s off to Corpus Christi Holy Rosary School in Port Chester, NY, which organized the first in-person fundraising event in more than a year, raising a record amount for student scholarships. The 10th annual Fr. Peter M. Rinaldi Awards Dinner, postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic, was re-imagined as a “Drive-In Gala” and held outdoors in Rye Brook, NY on May 1. With full safety protocols in place, participants parked their cars and tailgated, enjoying delicious cuisine from food trucks. r. Domenica was born in Paterson, NJ, one of five children. When she was four years old, her mother and youngest brother died, and her father had his hands full. He placed two girls, Domenica and Rosalie, in St. Michael’s Orphanage in North Haledon, run by the Salesian Sisters. There they lived a life full of study, work, prayer, and fun. In time, Rosalie was first to join the Sisters, followed one year later by Domenica. After formation, Sr. Domenica began teaching at Mary Help of Christians School in Manhattan, and continued her studies at Fordham University. She became a master teacher of first graders, instilling in them sound and lasting reading skills as well as life skills. She was also a capable administrator of elementary and high schools. “I am convinced our Blessed Mother planned this for me,” she says, “and my mother in Heaven worked with Our Lady to make my life so beautiful, alive, and new each day.”

r. Livia was born in Roveretto, Italy, one of six children. During her sophomore year of high school, she joined the Salesian Sisters. After profession, she was sent to the U.S. in 1953 and remained here for 16 years, serving as a principal, community animator, and assistant to the newly-professed Sisters. After 16 years of service in America, she was given the assignment of secretary to the general councilor in Rome for the Missions, Sr. Lydia Carini. She accompanied her on her visits to the mission provinces: India, Japan, Korea, Australia, the Philippines, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Sr. Livia was asked to remain at our Motherhouse in Rome, working there for 20 years. Finally we have dear Sr. Livia back with us in the U.S. “I was very pleased when the Mother General offered me the opportunity to come back to America where I had begun my religious life,” she says.

r. Raymonde was born in St-Adelphe, Québec, Canada, the middle child of seven. “Our family was poor, but we were well cared for and greatly loved,” she recalls. An encounter with a visiting Salesian priest set her on the path. “I instantly loved his affable manner, affection for Don Bosco, and dedication to his mission with the young. I felt God calling me to become a Salesian Sister.” In 1951, she became the first Canadian Aspirant. “My parents were brave and generous in letting me go to the U.S., as I was only 14, did not know English, and had not left home before. In spite of these challenges, I found my new family with the Sisters in North Haledon.” Sr. Raymonde has served in the U.S. and Canada in summer camps and parish faith formation. “My deepest joy and fulfillment were always found in preparing young people and adults for the Sacraments of Baptism, First Eucharist, and Confirmation,” she says. 65th Anniversary

r. Mary Bertha was born in St. Tite, Canada, one of 13 children. Hers was a family where joy, music, and laughter reigned in a very Christian atmosphere, where nightly Rosary, evening prayers, and Sunday Mass were the norm. There was so much love for each child, and they were all well provided for. Mary Bertha began to feel the call to religious life but her Mother agreed that when she was older, they would speak about it again. However, in 1948, her mother died, a tragic loss for the family. Mary Bertha put aside her dream of becoming a Sister since she was now needed at home. In time, she was permitted to follow her dream. “I learned to love the Blessed Mother at my Mother’s knee, but I understand more now,” Sr. Mary Bertha says. “After 65 years of religious consecration, I have never regretted my decision to become a Salesian Sister.”

Sr. Louise served as the first Communications Coordinator of the Eastern Province, which allowed her to travel across the United States and overseas. “There are times and places which stand out in my memory,” she says, “especially spending time in Mornese, Italy, where St. Mary Mazzarello, our foundress, walked. Mornese is my spiritual homeland, land of my heart.”

Sr. Carmen began her Salesian journey in Morelia, Mexico. She taught in Texas for 18 years and was a principal in New Jersey and the financial administrator of the Province. “Though I cannot count the number of friends I have encountered in my various roles of service, I can only thank God, my own family, and my Salesian family, for having entrusted to me St. John Bosco’s special love for the Blessed Mother and for youth,” she says.

r. Louise was born in Stratford, CT, one of three children. Her parents were hardworking and appreciated education. The home was filled with books. “Reading opened doors of learning for me,” she says. “It came in good stead during my religious formation and, especially, during my years as a teacher and principal. I was able to educate young people and to share with them the joys that had always been mine using St. John Bosco’s challenge of being an educator in the spirit of the good Shepherd.”

r. Carmen was born in Saltillo, Mexico, one of four children. She met the Salesian Sisters when she attended Excelsior School in Monterrey. “I did feel at times that our Lord wanted me to become a Sister,” she recalls. “The life of the Salesian Sisters, working with young people, attracted me.” Instead, Carmen went on to continue her studies as a secretary and then worked in an office. But the thought of a religious vocation did not leave her, and Jesus made Himself more strongly felt in her life.

60th Anniversary

r. Balbina was born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, the sixth of ten children. When the oldest girl married and emigrated to Paterson, NJ, Balbina soon followed. In Paterson, Balbina attended evening classes while she worked in a factory during the day. Soon she met Sr. Stella Ruiz and Sr. Jane Sanchez, who helped Hispanic newcomers in the community. Balbina liked the Sisters immediately and asked to be enrolled in the Sodality of the Children of Mary. Her love of Mary increased and helped Balbina maintain her own life on an even keel. In time her mother gave her blessing for Balbina to join the Sisters. “After 60 years, I still love my vocation!” Sr. Balbina says. She is happy to reciprocate the love given and received throughout her life. “When God wants someone, He puts the right people in our path,” she says. “It is up to us to be ready to listen and to follow the call that God puts in our hearts.”

r. Claudette was born in Pointe-Verte, a small French Canadian village in New Brunswick. “I first met the Salesian Sisters when they came to Canada in 1953,” she recalls. “My family home was across the street from the convent, and as soon as I could I joined their Oratory and attended their school.” When she was 9, she knew she had a calling. “Being a Salesian Sister has been my joy because it has allowed me the privilege of knowing so many young people, whose presence and lives fill me with happiness,” she says. “Children have so much to offer us; we are not just the ones who give to them. During my 60 years of religious life I have experienced the gift of them in so many ways as a classroom teacher, parish religious catechist, and even as formator of the Aspirants. “I thank God for my vocation and pray every day for many other young women to join us in our beautiful mission.”

r. Carmela was born in Ribera, Sicily, the youngest of six children. Hers was a loving family environment with God and parents at the center. Her mother, noted as being “a woman of peace” in the neighborhood, died when Carmela was 17. When her father chose to remarry, Carmela’s brother, who had emigrated to the U.S., invited her to live with his family in Elizabeth, NJ. She was delighted to discover the Salesian parish there and became friends with the Sisters. Sr. Carmela began her formation in North Haledon in 1958 and made her first profession in 1961. “I believe that my mother’s prayers obtained for me the grace of my vocation,” Sr. Carmela says. “Thanks to her example and her love, I am now a happy FMA. I am still able to make myself useful, thank God, and enjoy taking care of our beautiful chapel at the Provincial House.”

r. Isabel was born in Monterrey, Mexico, one of seven children. “I met the Salesian Sisters when I was six,” she recalls. “I still remember that day clearly and feeling I never wanted to leave school. Was it the first call of God? I was not sure, but I loved that house of St. John Bosco. The Sisters were kind and cheerful. They were always with us, smiling and playing with us, which made me want to become one of them.” Divine Providence would lead Sr. Isabel to ministry in the U.S. as a teacher and educator. “In looking back over my 50 years as a Salesian Sister, I realized my first desire at age 6 has been gratified in many ways and through many people,” Sr. Isabel says. “I thank God, my parents, my family, and my Salesian Sisters for a wonderful adventure of unimaginable joy and love. I also thank Our Blessed Mother for choosing me to be one of her daughters.”

r. Pauline was born in Montréal, Canada. She vividly remembers meeting the Salesian Sisters there in 1976. The Salesian spirit caught her heart almost immediately. She found what she had been searching for, a missionary religious congregation that belongs to Mary. Another attraction was the Sisters’ approachability to the young and their involvement in their lives to lead them to God. Sr. Pauline enjoys teaching and afterschool activities, as well as leading First Communion and Confirmation classes in parishes. In 2010, she returned to the Provincial House to help in the infirmary and the finance office at Mary Help of Christians Academy. She is presently full-time help to the Province Treasurer. Like many FMAs, Sr. Pauline has learned to give her best at many occupations. The goal always remains the same: the salvation of souls for the glory of God.

r. Marisol was born in Moca, Dominican Republic, the oldest of four children. Her father owned a neighborhood grocery store and a farm in the country. As a child, she loved going to the farm to see the animals and the beauty of nature. Marisol came to know the Salesian Sisters at her elementary school. After receiving Holy Communion, she felt the call to belong entirely to Jesus. At 17, after graduating high school, she joined the Sisters. When her initially-skeptical parents saw Marisol so happy in her choice of life, they were at peace. Sr. Marisol was transferred to the U.S. in 2006, and has taught in schools in Florida, Louisiana, and New Jersey. Sr. Marisol awakes gratefully every day for the opportunity to belong to God and serve the children He entrusts to her. “Whoever loves God lacks nothing. God alone is all we need,” she says.

he Salesian Sisters Partners Circle was founded in 1991 to provide unrestricted funds for urgent needs of the Salesian Sisters and their mission. These include support for capital needs, scholarship assistance, technology upgrades, and funds for those unforeseen situations that require immediate attention (such as during the COVID-19 pandemic). Your annual contribution to this fund empowers the Sisters to continue their mission: To Provide Financial Assistance and Volunteer Services to the Salesian Sisters and to the Young People in their Care for the Advancement of Education, Vocations, and Community Life. The fire which destroyed the Chapel at Mary Help of Christians Academy in May 2018 underscored the vital importance of the Partners Circle Fund, enabling the Sisters to respond quickly in an emergency.

h, family! I would wager that all of us reading this article can tell great stories around that one word: FAMILY. It is amazing how the family dynamic changes with time. Most of us remember our doting grandparents with admiration and love, but may have mixed feeling about our own parents, who at times had to keep us on the straight and narrow. I imagine those of you who have children have used some of your parents’ techniques, perhaps to your own surprise. Even in the classroom we Salesian Sisters sometimes hear ourselves echoing our mothers and fathers! Our family is an important part of our identity that shapes our culture and influences our perspective. Even our more “interesting” relatives have their impact.

Specifically, we were asked to help with the youth ministry team at St. Francis de Sales High School. When doing our research, we discovered that the patron of the entire diocese, not just the high school, is St. Francis de Sales, and their cathedral is under the patronage of St. Joseph, the patron of our Province. The Vicar of Religious, who has been our contact person, was ordained on May 24th, the feast of Mary Help of Christians. All of these little signs pointed to God’s plan to bring us to Columbus and that our connection is “all in the family.”

Beloved missionary and teacher

Rest in peace, Sr. Inez Molano, FMA

r. Inez Molano, beloved missionary from Colombia and a well-loved Sister, passed away on May 9 in Haledon, NJ. She was 91 and was professed as a Salesian Sister for 71 years. A native of Tuta, Colombia, Inez was the youngest of four children. Education was in her blood, as her father was a high school teacher and eventually the superintendent of the public school system, and her mother was a teacher in the village school. Inez attended Mary Help of Christians College in Bogotá, run by the Salesian Sisters. There she fell in love with the Salesian charism and mission. After profession, she was sent to Turin, Italy for missionary training. In 1953 she joined fellow missionary Sr. Livia Setti on a boat to the United States. Sr. Inez’ educational career was vast and talented. She

was not only an accomplished teacher, but following in her father’s footsteps, she took on administrative roles as a dedicated principal and many other positions. Although in her last years, advancing age and dementia deprived her of the ability to speak, her eyes would sparkle with joy and affection whenever a Sister, loved one, or caregiver would visit. She always wanted to be with the community, to be physically present and speak to everyone with her warm gaze and smile. On her 65th anniversary of religious profession in 2015, Sr. Inez wrote, “The wealth of experiences lived in America gave me great joy. I have always felt the Lord’s Presence wherever obedience called me. Mary Help of Christians has been my constant guide and model. My heart is full of gratitude for the graces received during my years of religious life. I have loved everyone, but especially the children, young people, and their families.”

Joseph Garcia, dear friend and benefactor

he Salesian Sisters mourn the passing of a dear friend and benefactor, Joseph “Joe” Garcia, who died on May 28, two days after his 91st birthday. One of the most notable philanthropists in Tampa, FL, Joe was an attorney and chairman of the Tampa Port Authority. He spent years helping the Boys & Girls Club, where he belonged as a boy. The Salesian Youth Center/Boys & Girls Club bears the name of Joe and his beloved wife of 63 years, Anne.

Joe’s association with the Salesian Sisters started early. His first cousin was Sr. Wilma Sanchez. At St. Joseph Parish in Tampa, Sr. Helen Mazurak encouraged Joe to attend Jesuit High School. He won a scholarship to Loyola University, then joined the Navy and later attended law school at the University of Florida. Visit us online! www.salesiansisters.org

Joe’s love for and dedication to the Salesian Sisters and their mission to young people were unmatched. “At our first meeting 31 years ago, Joe told me, ‘Stop right there. I do not serve on boards or committees. You better look somewhere else,’” Sr. Mary Rinaldi recalled. “He went on to be a founding member of the Salesian Sisters Partners Circle and chairman of the board. He was an inspiration and a friend to so many.” “Joe was unassuming, genuine, sincere, not impressed with himself, and with a great God-given disposition to help people,” fellow board member, the Hon. E.J. Salcines, told the Tampa Bay Times. The Salesian Sisters extend their condolences and prayers to Anne; daughter Cindy and son Stephen; and the extended family. Reading the tea leaves for the bug bites

here is a tea from Taiwan known for its honeyed fragrance and sweetness, both of which are produced because of the bite of a most adorable bright green miniature leafhopper aphid. When the leafhopper bites the tea leaf, the plant releases enzymes as a way to defend itself by attracting the natural predators of the leafhopper. Interestingly, these enzymes are what give this tea, called Dongfang Meiren Oolong Cha (Eastern Beauty Oolong Tea), its unique and sweet flavor. Although there are other teas in this category called mi xiang (“honey-fragranced” – due to also being bug-bitten and experiencing an enzyme effect), Eastern Beauty is the most famous.

Jesus is like the tea farmer; in Scripture He spoke of being the “vine grower,” but if He were familiar with tea plants, I am sure He would have made a parable about them, too. He knows what He is doing when He allows us, the “tea plant,” to get “bit” sometimes, or when He dries out our “soil” or even painfully trims back our “leaves” or “roasts” us in a big pan. He knows what He is doing because He knows us personally and what we can become, if we trust Him, in spite of difficulties and pain. Jesus only wants to create something beautiful and unique with us.

Salesian School Alumni Spotlight

Racing from Villa Madonna to NASCAR!

t’s a long road from Villa Madonna School in Tampa, FL to the race tracks of NASCAR, but one alumnus has made it to the winner’s circle: Aric Almirola, class of 1998. Aric, 37, competes full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, driving the No. 10 Ford Mustang for StewartHaas Racing. Last year was a banner one: 6 top-five finishes and 18 top-10s, with 305 laps led – all season bests. He also scored his eighth-consecutive top-10 finish at Talladega Superspeedway to tie the track record for most consecutive top-10s, set by the legendary Dale Earnhardt Jr. Aric’s nickname is “The Cuban Missile,” a reflection of his heritage. His grandfather, Sam Rodriguez, was a sprint-car racer of note and a three-time Tampa Bay area racing champ. He taught his eight-year-old grandson how to win at go-kart racing, a foretaste of future glory.

Aric was sports-crazy as a child, but is quick to admit that his behavior was less than stellar. His parents took him out of public school and moved him to Villa Madonna for the fifth grade. “They knew I needed a change and felt the smaller class sizes and structure would be beneficial to me,” he explains. “I was a good student, but I just couldn’t stop goofing off. I was the class clown.” He credits Sr. Cecilia Besi, principal at the time, and two teachers, Sr. Mary Bertha Paquin and Sr. Kim Keraitis, for setting

Aric joined every sports team he could, especially basketball, and looked up to Coach Oscar Laboy who taught physical education and coached the boys’ teams. He and Coach Laboy – still teaching after 41 years – remained friends, and reunited during Aric’s recent visit to film a segment for a NASCAR television program. “Some things have changed, but the gym is still the same,” Aric notes. The gym was purchased and renovated while he was in school. “There was so much joy and happiness among us kids when the gym opened. We now had a home court of our own. It was incredible!” Aric broke his leg over the summer of 1997, and he began the eighth grade with a cast all the way up to his pelvis. “It was devastating,” he recalls. “All I wanted to do was play basketball.” Aric was watching the last basketball game of the season when Coach Laboy put him in at the end of the game – and he scored! “It meant the world to me to be able to contribute and still be a part of the team.” Aric visits his former coach, and close friend, Oscar Laboy, at Villa Madonna School. Aric went on to Hillsborough High School and the University of Central Florida, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering in case his racing dreams did not materialize. He got his major break in racing at age 23 when he was signed up for the Joe Gibbs Racing/Reggie White Driver Diversity Program. “The high expectations set for me at Villa Madonna prepared me for life,” Aric admits. “I’ve always demanded more of myself as a racer. The Sisters taught me that I could make things happen in life if I really wanted them, and I have.” – Theresa Anderson

One of Aric Almirola’s biggest fans is Villa kindergartener Flynn Fallon, age 6 (left). “Flynn’s love of racing is innate,” says his mother, Simone. When the family went to the 2020 Daytona 500, Flynn was hooked. Learning about a famous Villa alumnus who was a race-car driver sealed the deal. “Flynn gave Coach Laboy a small replica of Aric’s current race car,” Simone relates. “Coach and Flynn took a picture with the car, and Coach sent it to Aric. Aric then sent them signed posters. Flynn was so very excited! He also wrote thank-you letters to Coach and Aric. We are so very grateful to Aric and Coach Laboy for going out of their way to give Flynn an incredible surprise.”

Pavilion Project to begin at Villa, at last!

ears in the planning, the Pavilion Project on Villa Madonna Campus in Tampa, FL, is about to break ground! The project includes renovation of the entire north end of the campus, including a playground, track, kickball field, and basketball courts. The new pavilion will provide access for Villa students, as well as kids at the Salesian Youth Center, to a covered playground and sports courts, no matter the weather conditions, and without the health risks of sun overexposure. The pavilion, moreover, will be fully accessible, with convenient restrooms and water fountains, creating a spacious and comfortable venue for all family members to gather, be a part of sporting events, and even attend outdoor Mass.

ACADEMY OF OUR LADY, Marrero, LA – Academy physic students ventured to Archbishop Shaw High School’s pool recently to test their creations as part of the annual Physics Boat Project. Putting their understanding of buoyancy, fluid dynamics, and engineering practices to the test, students constructed boats out of cardboard to race against their classmates with the challenge of making sure the boat can sustain weight without sinking. ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL, Hawthorne, NJ – Joy and excitement filled the air when Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney of the Diocese of Paterson paid a visit, stopping in all classes and greeting students, and then visitng with remote learning students (only 10 percent of the student body) online. “It was a great and inspiring day,” says Sr. Colleen Clair, principal. “We even had a treat at the end: an ice-cream bar. Our parents came to scoop ice cream, and the Bishop gave everyone a special key chain.” ST. THERESA SCHOOL, Kenilworth, NJ – St. Theresa’s was one of four schools that participated in the virtual Union County Catholic League of Forensics “Humor” Competition. Students had to memorize a humorous piece within a 2-to-5 minute time frame. The six-member team, moderated by Mrs. Christine McCarthy, scored three wins: sixth-grader Gabrielle Aguinaldo was awarded an Honorable Mention Ribbon; eighth-grader Jayson Ferrari received the third place ribbon; and seventh-grader Jacob Falconer placed first. MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS ACADEMY, North Haledon, NJ – A virtual Career Day brought 16 Mary Help alumnae (including Kelly Nestor, class of 1990, above) into the classroom to share their stories. Their careers run the gamut from health care and accounting to hospitality, engineering, landscape architecture and aircraft management. Each explained what their career entails, education necessary, dayto-day routine, and benefits each experiences from the work they do. Recently our Novices, those women in their third and fourth year of initial training to become a Salesian Sister, made a mini-pilgrimage with Sr. Karen Dunn to Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral in Philadelphia to visit the tomb of St. Katherine Drexel. During their class on the Salesian Sisters’ Constitutions, or rule of life, they learned how St. Katherine lived religious poverty, that detachment from too much “stuff ” and the desire for wealth, in spite of possessing so much as an heiress.

efore the pandemic, young women interested in religious life would visit the Salesian Sisters on a “Come & See,” following Jesus’ invitation to His disciples to “Come and see” what He had to offer by following Him (John 1:39). Unfortunately, COVID-19 made it impossible to host these young women in person, but Sr. Theresa Lee and Sr. Cora Beboso creatively adapted to the situation and hosted several “Zoom and See” online events throughout the year, including one in Canada, allowing interested young women to meet some of the Sisters, learn about Salesian life, ask questions, and spend some time in prayer.
