Sr. Mary Rinaldi’s Letter Dear Friends, Needless to say, 2020 is a year most of us would like to forget. The pandemic has impacted our lives, families, and livelihoods, and we mourn the loss of countless loved ones. We await 2021 with prayerful expectations. But as we turn the page now into a new Church year with the Season of Advent, our faith is renewed and our hopes for a brighter future, as symbolized in the Christ Child on Christmas Day. How beautiful, then, is our cover photograph, with Sr. Eileen Tickner explaining the manger scene to children at Villa Madonna School in Tampa, FL. Sincere thanks to all who participated in our inaugural online fundraisers, the Dames of Mary Help Autumn Gala (see page 3) and the Thanksgiving Basket (page 4). Virtual fundraising is a brave new world for us, but by all accounts was a success due to your loyalty and generosity. By the grace of God and Our Lady, and the help of so many Sisters and laity, our Salesian Schools (pages 16-21) and Vocations (pages 22-23) continue to thrive in spite of the pandemic. The Dames of Mary Help Autumn Gala
Fundraising goes virtual with great success!
I
n spite of the many unexpected changes and challenges brought by 2020, one thing remains unchanged – the ongoing financial aid need of students at Mary Help of Christians Academy. The Dames of Mary Help were resolute that their annual Autumn Gala must go on! In true form, the Dames rolled up their sleeves and entered the unknown world of virtual event planning. After much research and many Zoom meetings, they were able to pull off one of their most successful galas to date on October 14, raising $285,000 for scholarships and operating expenses. Special thanks to our star emcee, Benjamin Farrell; our three “Ambassadors,” Tino Martinez, Ray Catena, and Myriah Di Petrillo; those who donated silent auction items; and all the Sisters, Dames, students, and friends who participated. And a huge thank you to all of YOU who attended your first virtual gala and donated generously to support our students. God bless you!

Joe Garcia recalled the vital impact of the SYC. “We took part in something that brought tremendous benefit to the community,” he said. “We

Celebrating 25 years of the Salesian Youth Center (SYC), the online program focused on paying tribute to Joe and Anne Garcia, whose vision and commitment helped start the SYC in 1995.

Coming “home” and continuing to serve
C
ynthia Spano is the new Director of Alumni Relations in the Development Office of the Salesian Sisters, based in Tampa, FL. For Cynthia, this new position is a homecoming of sorts, as she attended Villa Madonna School and graduated in 1973. She previously served as the Director of Advancement for Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School, and was a sales director for the Home Shopping Network. Anna Anderson, Villa Madonna class of 2019, recently interviewed her fellow alumna.
Who were some of the Salesian Sisters at Villa Madonna when you were a student? When I attended, the Sisters outnumbered the lay teachers. I was taught by many Sisters, most now gone to Heaven. I especially remember Sr. Vincent Giaj-Levra, Sr. Esther Solis, Sr. Gaetana Piccirelli, Sr. Yamile Saieh, Sr. Angela DeCapua, Sr. Carmen Morales, Sr. Dora Adames, Sr. Philomena Martorana, Sr. Wilma Sanchez, and Sr. Gloria Machado. I really and truly I loved them all.
this is where God wants me to be now, to share the gifts I’ve been given in my life with others. I want to do anything I can to help the Salesian Sisters because of how great they always were to me. What are your new responsibilities at the Tampa Development Office? I work closely with Theresa Anderson, our Director of Development, and assist in any way I can. Spanning the globe as Salesian “travel agent”
U
pon meeting Sr. Livia Setti, one is immediately impressed by her gentleness and kindness. Originally from Rovereto, Trento, in northern Italy, her bright smile and sparkling eyes conceal many stories of travels and adventures over more than 69 years as a Salesian Sister. Guido Setti, a Salesian priest, and Alfonso Setti, a Salesian brother, were certain that I had a Salesian vocation, so I followed their guidance,” she says. Professed in 1951, Sr. Livia was soon asked to go to the missions in the United States. She travelled with Sr. Ines Molano from Colombia, the beginning of a life-long friendship. When Sr. Livia first arrived, she was impressed by the generosity and joy of the Sisters in the United States. “We felt we belonged to one big family, the Sisters and boarders in North Haledon, happily sharing life and work together,” she says. She attended English classes at Fordham University, in addition to correspondence classes, and did her best to learn the culture and language of the young people of her new country. Years of helping Aspirants and teaching second grade (her favorite because it is the year of First Holy Communion) in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania followed until Mother Lydia Carini asked her to
replace Sr. Eugenia Marinoni as her personal secretary. Mother Lydia’s role was to represent Mother General and make sure the Sisters were living the Salesian charism well, encourage them in their mission, and provide for their needs. Sr. Livia handled the schedule, travel arrangements, travel visas and finances of the trips. Her travels of almost a decade with Mother Lydia brought her to countries like Japan, China, India, Thailand, and Panama. “I was even sent to visit Australia by myself on Mother Lydia’s behalf,” she says. “I remember the beauty of the Panama Canal and the mountains of Japan, ministries in China, and the impressive work of the Sisters with dozens of blind children in Thailand. They devised a way for the kids to play ball by making a hole and putting sand in it, so they could listen to the sound of the sand hitting the ground as the ball flew through the air.” After her term as secretary, Sr. Livia went to assist at the Salesian Sisters’ headquarters in Rome, using her skills as “travel agent of the Sisters” that she had gained with Mother Lydia to coordinate the travel of the Sisters who passed through Rome. With the trust and encouragement of the General Economer, Mother Candide, she even had the privilege of going to the offices of the Vatican. Sr. Livia now spends her days helping at the Provincial House, crocheting, feeding the birds and squirrels, and being a source of stability, service, and prayer in the house. When asked if she had a message for her Adopters and our benefactors, Sr. Livia smiled. “Thank you for what you do,” she says. “I know so often you give out of your own need and what you could use. May God bless you.”

On the Journey with Sister B
Glitter is one of God’s “holy reminders”
D
uring my initial training as a Salesian Sister, we had a presenter whose words remained with me more than many of the others I encountered. This wasn’t because she was particularly profound, or because I felt a special connection with her, but because she mentioned one of my favorite things: glitter.
Christmas is coming to remind us that God is here, now, for all time, for you and for me. Advent invites us to reflect on the love of a God who becomes one of us, even as small and helpless as a tiny baby, so we won’t be afraid to approach Him. Christmas is amazing. This year has been hard, and I know that during it most of us have lost friends and loved ones. Maybe we aren’t feeling too “sparkly.” I admit there are many days I am just exhausted by the number of problems and sorrows 2020 brought.
Those who know me would probably be surprised to discover my love of glitter. I really don’t own anything covered in it and it’s not something I often talk about, as I keep most things I like rather private. But this is my public declaration: I love the stuff. I don’t care that it gets everywhere, and in terms of a craft item, it is one of my favorites. With Advent upon us and Christmas approaching, more glittery decorations appear. Whether sparkly ornaments and tinsel, or glitter-encrusted candles and garland, Christmas really is the glitter season.

For me, glitter represents goodness and joy, because it reflects whatever light is around it. We Christians are meant to “spread the light of God’s love in the world” and I think, if I am not mistaken, that means we are supposed to “be” glitter. The presenter who mentioned glitter so many years ago did so in a way that made me like glitter even more. She said, “Wherever you see glitter, even if it’s a random sparkle on someone’s face, let it remind you of Christmas and what Christmas means – God is with us.” God being with us is the heart of Christianity, for without Jesus, there is no Church, no Eucharist, no Blessed Mother, and no reason to read the New Testament. Thankfully, however, Jesus is real, God is with us, and

Yet, even on my worst days, God always sends me a little reminder that He is with me, and sometimes it’s as small as a piece of glitter. Perhaps this seems silly, as we are used to Hollywood depictions of God appearing as thunder and lightning, but in my life, God is always gentle, hidden, subtle, and sparkly.
Maybe my approach to glitter makes you laugh, and that’s ok – we need more laughter this year. Just give it a try. Let glitter become a reminder of God’s Presence, because holiness isn’t limited to statues and stained glass; we can encounter God in everything and every moment. It’s been years since I first let glitter become one of my “holy reminders” that God is with me, but it’s been one of my best ones, because even in the darkest places I’ve been, glitter still sparkled for me and it will for you, too. I promise. I wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Sparkly Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year! Dear Friends: A message from Sister Joanne
Always know that God IS with us!
W
e are now well into the Advent Season. It is a time of waiting and preparing for the birth of Jesus. We know that the chosen people waited thousands of years for the Messiah to come, and when He did, not everyone was able to recognize the Prince of Peace. I think I can say with some certainty that some of us are like those Israelites waiting and hoping for better times to come. Recently, I found this quote: “Faith dares the soul to go beyond what the eyes can see.” Surely, it is our faith that can help us recognize that “God IS with us,” even in the chaos that surrounds us.
Many years later, my sister shared a tradition she started with my niece and nephew. Every Christmas season, she would go to Dunkin’ Donuts and get them a donut and a cup of hot chocolate, and then drive them around the neighborhood looking at Christmas decorations while listening to Charlie Brown Christmas music. My niece and nephew enjoyed this tradition so much that they asked if they could keep it up when they returned home from college. Life as we have known it has changed dramatically since last Christmas. We need to be physically distant from many we love and forego many annual traditions and celebrations. To be honest, I find it difficult to write about Christmas this year since I feel like I’ve been in a time warp, and yet, in all that we are going through, I have a deep sense of peace and believe that all will be well.

Rest in peace, Sr. Rosemary Cordes, FMA
T
he Salesian Sisters and extended family of Adopters, benefactors, alumni, and friends mourn the passing of Sr. Rosemary Cordes, FMA, on November 27 after a brave battle with cancer. She was 73 and professed as a Salesian Sister for 52 years. Born in Queens, NY, Rosemary was the second of eight children. Her parents maintained a loving, understanding and peaceful environment at home, always stressing respect and concern for others. Rosemary’s brother entered the Salesian seminary, and she visited him often, impressed with the cheerfulness and family spirit of the priests and brothers. On one occasion, she met Sr. Helen Mazurek, FMA, who asked about her future plans. Sr. Helen invited the entire Cordes family to visit the Sisters in Reading, PA. Such kindness made a big impression, and Rosemary found her call to the Salesian Sisters. She was professed in 1968, and continued her education at Seton Hall Unversity.
In Tampa, FL, Sr. Rosemary taught at St. Joseph’s School for 15 years. For the past four years she was a teacher’s aide in Kindergarten and in charge of early care (before-school care) at Villa Madonna School, and worked at the Salesian Youth Center/Boys & Girls Club.
Sr. Rosemary Cordes’ sense of fun was endearing, whether doing an online cooking demonstration (above) or on a nautical outing with her Villa Madonna Sisters: Sr. Mary Jackson, Sr. Elfie Del Rosario, and Sr. Myriam Meus.
“Sr. Rosemary had a childlike heart that delighted in the goodness of each moment, each simple and precious moment, whether it be in prayer, with others or in nature,” recalls Sr. Mary Jackson, Villa Madonna principal. “She was a Salesian Sister through and through, and had a special gift in working with the little ones.” In early care, many Villa youngsters were dropped off and missed breakfast at home. Sr. Rosemary would have them sit with her to eat breakfast before heading to play games. She would talk to them and tell them stories as they ate, making sure they finished their breakfast. It became a favorite place to be – at Sister’s table!
Sr. Rosemary lovingly and joyfully served the littlest of God’s children in the Northeast, Florida, and Louisiana. She always had sense of awe about her, delighting in the large and small accomplishments of the children.
While she was sick, it was apparent how much Sr. Rosemary was loved, as she received cards from past students everywhere. At the news of her passing, social media boomed with posts from alumni who knew her and loved her.
If you were a camper at Camp Auxilium in Newton, NJ, you likely recall Sr. Rosemary’s cinnamon toast made with hot dog buns. She even made a video showing how to make the dish this past summer for the Salesian Virtual Camp. Even while ill, she wanted to be with the kids and find ways to teach them.
Sr. Rosemary is survived by her brothers Bill, Chris, Mark, Steve, and John and her sisters Theresa, Carol, and Florence, as well as their spouses and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. The Salesian Sisters offer their deepest condolences and prayers to the extended family.

CORPUS CHRISTI HOLY ROSARY SCHOOL, Port Chester, NY – The Pro-Life Club hosted its first meeting via Zoom on November 18. Kate Maloney (center panel), Northeast Regional Coordinator from the Students for Life of America, presented a “Pro-Life 101” training course to eight middle-school students. She covered definitions from science that mark the beginning of life; tools to articulate the pro-life position on the controversial topic of abortion; and tips on how to respond to friends and family members who engage us in conversations about abortion from the pro-choice perspective, noting that fear is the number one cause of abortions. The Pro-Life Club will meet biweekly via Zoom, with Ms. Maloney leading the group in various fun activities that impart the value of human dignity and advocate for pro-life. “We are so happy to provide this great opportunity to our students to help save lives through pro-life advocacy and put their faith into action,” says Sr. Boram Lee, shown above. NATIVITÉ DE MARIE, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada – The Salesian Sisters in Cornwall, including Sr. Lillian Roy, Sr. Lise Guitard, Sr. Raymonde Dicaire, and Sr. Joyce Bermejo, packed Halloween packages with festive treats like candies, prayer cards, stickers, and wooden art for their young people who regularly join their virtual youth center. The Sisters later made socially-distanced deliveries as a surprise for the young people. Their treats were greatly appreciated and their thoughtfulness and touch of human contact helped restore some normalcy to an otherwise abnormal Halloween.

Student-inventor awarded first U.S. patent
N
ot many juniors in high school can say they have a patent approved by the United States Patent & Trademark Office. Unless, that is, you’re Nikita Marino, class of 2022 at ImmaculataLa Salle High School in Miami, FL.
Nikita was invited to the prestigious National Invention Convention and presented her fluoride product to hundreds of parents, students, and judges. Bite Bright led to Nikita’s second invention, an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial vitamin called “VitaGummies.”
Nikita invented “Bite Bright,” a new toothpaste formula that can be ingested and is beneficial for the mouth and internal organs in the human body. She started the patent application in 2018 and won full approval last month. “Ever since I was very young, I loved to make and create things,” Nikita says. “I have always enjoyed baking and arts and crafts. So inventing for me was just another part of being a creator.”
Oral care was just the beginning. In 2017, Nikita and her brother J. Alex Marino created a 100-percent natural cream formula to eliminate stinky foot odor and relieve dry and cracked skin. “FootShell” is their first trademarked company, and the product is sold on Amazon and at health fairs (www.footshell.com). Nearly three years after Nikita invented Bite Bright, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office approved her first patent, “Oral Health Composition.” VitaGummies is now in the patent approval process.

ACADEMY OF OUR LADY, Marrero, LA – Service is one of the core values taught at Academy of Our Lady and encompassed in almost all activities, including an annual Service Week. Due to the pandemic, Service Week was limited to one day this year, but that did not stop our student body from helping out the community and learning from others about the importance of stewardship and civil leadership. MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS ACADEMY, North Haledon, NJ – During the week before Thanksgiving, Mary Help students participated in a Thanksgiving Food Drive – including these rather delectable cupcakes – in support of their friends and neighbors, and in the spirit of some friendly competition between classes. As has become their custom since his passing in 2017, this act of service was in honor of one of Mary Help’s most generous benefactors, the late Rodger Rohde. For each of 13 years, Rodger and his wife Beverly sponsored four young women at the Academy. Mary Helpers know that many of their friends and neighbors have been affected by this year’s unusual circumstances. The food they collected was brought to the Father English Community Center Food Pantry in Paterson, and was their way of helping to ensure that everyone had a plentiful Thanksgiving!

ACADEMY OF OUR LADY, Marrero, LA – All Saints Day was a special day on campus for Academy of Our Lady’s senior class. Students celebrated Mass with their grandparents for an abbreviated Grandparents Day. Despite the current COVID-19 precautions which required masks and social distancing, it was nonetheless a joyous occasion to have guests on campus. Senior Maria Abreu (right) was thrilled to celebrate with her grandfather, as were seniors Brooke and Jenna Bourg (left) with their grandmothers.
OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada – The Salesian Sisters in Surrey, including Sr. Hae-Jin Lim and Sr. Corazon Beboso, recently launched a Virtual Salesian Leadership Camp for youth ages 14-17, inspired by their successful Virtual Oratory. They began by recruiting two leaders from a previous Salesian Leadership Retreat and seven more members of different parish young groups to form the “Young Team,” or retreat team leaders. The enthusiasm, energy, and readiness of the nine leaders transformed the convent into their base camp every Friday evening in October. The young leaders not only grew in love and understanding of Salesian Spirituality, but also became more confident in exerting their leadership in the “new normal” environment caused by the pandemic. Postulants continue their vocation journey Editor’s note: During the second stage of initial formation to become a Salesian Sister, which is typically during a young woman’s second year of training, she is sent to Bellflower, CA to the inter-province formation house. There these Postulants deepen their understanding of Salesian life, expand their experience in the Salesian Family and various apostolates, and prepare to enter the next stage, the Novitiate. Aspirants typically become Postulants in October, near or on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, October 7. Here one of our Postulants, Juliana Alfonso, provides an update.
O
n the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary, my five companions and I officially became Postulants together. We were blessed to have all of our Salesian Sisters from the Los Angeles area join us in our chapel for the ceremony, while 100 of our closest Sisters, family and friends (as many as Zoom could hold) joined us virtually. As Postulants, we are learning each day what it means to be a Salesian Sister by taking courses on the history of
the Institute and its common Italian language, as well as serving at St. Dominic Savio Parish and School. During this time of pandemic, the parish/school apostolate looks a bit different, but it is still as vibrant and joyful as ever. With the help of video conferencing, each Saturday morning, we teach Religious Education in the virtual classroom in the morning and lead a Gospel reflection for the St. Dominic Savio Church Virtual Oratory in the early afternoon. The virtual apostolate has allowed us to become creative in the ways that we encounter the young people – virtual scavenger hunts, Simon Says, at-home crafts, pre-recording lessons, creating online learning assessments, and so on.
