Studio RAP’s ceramic masterpiece, Blue Voyage, transforms the simple act of arrival into an experience of flowing form and light. Dubai, United Arab Emirates At the threshold of Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, where the sea meets the city’s shimmering skyline, two monumental ceramic walls rise like sculpted waves. Designed by Studio RAP, a Rotterdam-based architecture and design studio, these walls form the heart of Blue Voyage, a breathtaking union of art, technology, and craftsmanship that welcomes guests into Dubai’s newest luxury landmark. A Moment of Arrival Positioned on either side of the hotel’s entrance, the twin walls are more than architectural features; they choreograph an experience. As visitors approach, the forms gently curve and fold like the ebb and flow of the nearby Gulf waters. The deeper one looks, the more the surface reveals, with delicate ridges and rippling lines that play with light and shadow from dawn until dusk. The result is a serene yet dynamic composition that transforms the act of entering a building into a sensory journey.
Crafted by Code and Clay Each wall stands six metres tall and stretches nine metres across, its expanse composed of nearly 900 unique ceramic tiles. Every tile was parametrically generated and 3D-printed in Studio RAP’s own facility in Rotterdam, giving the designers complete control over the geometry, texture, and tone of the installation. Specially designed corner tiles allow the flowing pattern to wrap seamlessly around the edges, enhancing the sculptural purity of the work. This meticulous process bridges the gap between computational precision and artisanal touch, each piece glazed, fired, and finished with care, resulting in a tactile surface that feels both futuristic and handcrafted. A Global Collaboration of Innovation Blue Voyage stands among the largest 3D-printed ceramic architectural installations in the world, underscoring Studio RAP’s reputation as a pioneer in digital craftsmanship. By fusing algorithmic design with centuries-old ceramic techniques, the studio brings a new kind of ornamentation to contemporary architecture, one that is deeply rooted in materiality and place. In Dubai, a city synonymous with spectacle, Blue Voyage achieves something rarer: quiet wonder. RING & SEEING Q: The title of your exhibition, I Thought I Heard You Say…, suggests a moment of uncertainty — of listening and mishearing. What drew you to this theme? A: I’ve always been fascinated by how we communicate — or fail to. Sometimes what we think we hear reveals more about us than about what was actually said. Painting, for me, works the same way. It’s a translation of perception into gesture, full of hesitation and interpretation. The title captures that suspended moment between hearing and understanding, between presence and memory. Q: Your paintings seem to hover between figuration and abstraction. How do you decide when a figure should appear clearly and when it should dissolve into colour? A: It’s a balance between control and release. I begin with a sense of form — a face, a body, a trace of movement — but as the painting develops, it takes on a life of its own. I listen to what the surface is telling me. Sometimes the figure insists on clarity; sometimes it wants to disappear. That tension between revelation and concealment gives the work its pulse. Q: Sound, silence, and the act of listening appear central to this body of work. How does that translate into your process in the studio? A: I often paint in silence. I find that absence of sound sharpens perception. Each brushstroke becomes a kind of listening — to the rhythm of my own gestures, to how the colours interact. The process feels almost musical: pauses, repetitions, variations. I try to let the painting breathe, as if it were a conversation unfolding without words.
Q: Many of your titles — Just Floating, Stone Cold David, The Kiss — seem to hint at fleeting emotions or fragments of dialogue. Do the titles come before or after the paintings? A: Usually after. They arrive when I step back and ask myself what I’ve just experienced. The titles are like small anchors — they don’t explain the work, but they give a clue to the state of mind I was in. Sometimes they come from overheard phrases, sometimes from music or literature. I want them to feel open, like unfinished sentences. Q: The exhibition includes both large, atmospheric canvases and smaller, more intimate studies. How do scale and format influence the mood of your work?
A: I hope they pause. That they allow themselves a quiet moment to look and feel. These paintings are about human connection — about what we say and what we can’t. If someone stands before one of them and feels a flicker of recognition, as if they’ve just heard a familiar voice, then I’ve succeeded. Q: And finally, what’s next for you after I Thought I Heard You Say…? A: I’m interested in taking this dialogue further — exploring the idea of collective memory and how images communicate across time. I’ll probably continue to work between clarity and dissolution, between voice and silence. It feels like a conversation that hasn’t finished yet. And, I hope to be able to explore the potential of exhibiting my art abroad. Ø
A: The larger works invite you to enter the space emotionally: they envelop you. The smaller ones are more introspective, like whispers. Together they create a rhythm, a movement between immersion and reflection. I enjoy that contrast: the monumental and the personal, the public and the private. Q: I described your paintings as “visual echoes of words once spoken or imagined.” Do you see your art as a form of translation — from language to image? A: Absolutely. Painting is my language. It’s slower, more ambiguous, but sometimes truer. A brushstroke can express hesitation, tenderness, or doubt in ways words can’t. I think of each work as an echo — something fleeting that leaves a lasting vibration. Q: What would you like visitors — especially those encountering your work for the first time — to take away from this exhibition?

etween the sea-breeze and the bustle of modern resorts lies an overlooked gem: the megalithic remains at Qawra a reminder that Malta’s history stretches far deeper than its holiday façades.
While time and the sea have taken their toll, fragments of the original coralline limestone façade remain, enough to stir the imagination and connect present-day travellers with the island’s prehistoric builders.
Nestled between the town of Qawra and neighbouring Buġibba, the remains of the Buġibba Temple offer a tangible link to an era over 4,000 years old.
The story of Buġibba Temple’s rediscovery begins in the 1920s, when Maltese archaeologist Themistocles Zammit identified large stones scattered in a field near Qawra Point.
Most visitors arrive unaware: Rome wasn’t built in a day - but the stones that became Malta’s temples were laid in the Bronze Age. Originally constructed during the Tarxien phase (approx. 3150–2500 BC), this small temple stood among the earliest organised structures on the island.

Formal excavations in 1928, and again in the early 1950s, revealed that the stones were not random, but part of a small Neolithic temple complex. Though much of the original structure has been lost, due mainly to agricultural clearing and
coastal development, excavators uncovered decorated stone blocks: one that likely served as an altar, and another carved with fish motifs, hinting at the rituals and beliefs of Malta’s early inhabitants. These stones now rest in the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta. Today, the site is woven into the grounds of DoubleTree by Hilton Malta, creating a striking, if somewhat surreal, juxtaposition: new waves of visitors walk past ancient slabs and parallel them with modern leisure. For curious travellers, the Hotel grounds offer one of the few glimpses into Malta’s distant past, right alongside contemporary comfort. What remains visible today may be modest in size, parts of the trilithon entrance, fragments of the floor and façade, and scattered megaliths,

but even in this reduced form, Buġibba Temple speaks volumes about the island’s ancient communities and their remarkable stoneworking skills. Visiting the Buġibba temple remains offers a different kind of Maltese experience, one that pairs leisure and history, sea breezes and ancient stones. For more than two decades, British Maltese artist and experiential designer Ryan Board has worked at the intersection of art, ecology, and systems thinking. His upcoming five year project, LIGHT OUT, set to debut in Malta in 2026, poses a deceptively simple question, what would happen if an entire nation switched off its lights at the same moment? In this candid conversation, Board reflects on the evolution of his practice, the shift from spectacle to meaning, and why darkness, both literal and metaphorical, may be one of the most powerful materials an artist can work with today. Q: You have spent years exploring art, ecology, and perception. What first drew you toward systems and the natural world? Over the last twenty plus years working in the arts, I watched a shift from meaning toward spectacle. Experiences became visitor attractions. Museums, exhibitions, public art, everything leaned heavily into numbers, footfall, engagement, metrics. Postmodernism was fading, and installations offering immersive satisfaction became dominant. I found myself right in the middle of that shift. Curators were inviting experiential work, corporations wanted the same energy for launches and campaigns, and I was designing these environments, often with generous budgets, that allowed ideas to exist in three dimensions. It was creatively freeing for a while. But eventually, I became cynical. Too much energy was being spent creating experiences that existed purely to generate revenue or justify funding. Somewhere along the way, depth was

lost. I reached a point of discomfort, possibly linked to becoming a parent, where I began searching for meaning beyond spectacle.
Q: Your work blurs boundaries between art, science, and philosophy. How do you define yourself?
Stepping away from that hyper speed environment allowed me to really look at the world. And what I saw was deeply troubling. Ecological collapse, systemic dysfunction, cultural exhaustion. I started asking how the kind of deep creativity I had developed could be redeployed toward confronting these issues, not with solutions, but with exploration. That shift pulled me naturally toward ecology and systems thinking.
I do not, at least not easily. Labels are cultural tools for organisation, but they can be destructive. I have spent much of my life dodging dropdown menus, artist, designer, researcher. None quite fit.
Q: Your work often operates at the scale of landscapes or even nations. Why does that scale appeal to you? I think of my projects as propositions rather than solutions. Science does not always have permission to explore the irrational, but art does. It can hold space for ideas that do not yet make sense, that feel audacious or impractical. We live in a time where ambition is often viewed with suspicion. Big ideas are dismissed as unrealistic or indulgent, especially in institutional or corporate environments driven by deliverables and timelines. I am interested in resisting that. I want to start with pure vision, without allowing fear or cultural limitation to crush it early. Many of the issues we face today exist because visionary thinking gets shut down too soon. The systems we live in do not support audacity unless it is profitable. I am comfortable leaning into that perceived profanity of big thinking. It is a childlike way of imagining that is beaten out of us early, and I think we desperately need it.
What I do now feels closest to deep artistic research. It is exploratory, intuitive, and unconfined by outcomes. All artists are researchers, but I am interested in spaces where creativity meets inquiry without the pressure of resolution. That is where I am most grounded. Q: LIGHT OUT approaches light pollution as both ecological and cultural. What led you to darkness as material? This project began as a childhood vision, thinking about Earth floating in space, signalling something outward. I was fascinated by the idea of a collective human gesture visible from beyond our planet. Eventually, that question narrowed, could an entire nation synchronise an action, turning lights off, that could be seen from space? Only later did I begin seriously researching light pollution and realise how under discussed yet destructive it is. Unlike other pollutants, light pollution stops instantly when the source is switched off. There is no residue. That makes it uniquely powerful and symbolic. It is not about cleanup, it is about coordination, awareness, and culture. >>

Darkness also functions like reverse graffiti, removing something reveals presence. There is something deeply calming and primitive about going dark, despite our cultural fear of it. Using nothingness as form is incredibly compelling. Q: How have institutions and policymakers responded so far? We are still early in the process, but the most common response has been lack of awareness. Light pollution simply is not on many radars yet. Engaging Maltese institutions, particularly the Arts Council, has been challenging but illuminating. They are not structured to support ambitious projects that do not produce measurable outcomes. Research based art, especially when the result is nothingness, is difficult to frame. Still, we found a way forward. The first phase is now funded, and that dialogue, documenting institutional resistance and adaptation, has become part of the work itself. Q: How do you balance poetic vision with logistical complexity? Vision is everything. It is the emotional anchor. When the vision is clear, people can tolerate complexity. The core idea of LIGHT OUT is incredibly simple, Malta switches off its lights in one synchronised moment, captured from the International Space Station. Most people can imagine it instantly. That simplicity allows space for complexity underneath. The project involves energy providers, aviation authorities, safety regulations, communities, even space agencies. And that is why it is a five year journey. The process, engagement, friction, discovery, is as important as the event itself. Malta’s scale makes it uniquely suited to this experiment. It could become a model for how small nations contribute meaningfully to global ecological discourse. Q: What might people rediscover when the lights go out? The night sky, first and foremost. Light pollution has severed our connection to the cosmos. Our ancestors navigated by stars, built belief systems around them. Today, we are consumed by immediate noise. Beyond that, there is the possibility of collective awareness. Whether people participate or not, it is a shared moment. A national signal. And perhaps a reminder of our place within something vast and unknowable.
Q: Is LIGHT OUT also about consumption and attention?
If we could turn that down, even slightly, it might be the most transformative act of all.
Absolutely. Seen from space, artificial light reveals a mechanical human footprint, energy extracted, processed, and burned to illuminate excess. It is profoundly visible.
LIGHT OUT will debut in Malta with an opening exhibition, scheduled for May 2026, introducing the five year project, and a series of public forum events across Malta.
This visibility invites reflection. What do we consume? Why? At what cost? It is not an accusation, it is an invitation to awareness.

Q: If you could switch off one light in the world, literal or metaphorical, what would it be? Fear. Fear once served survival, but today it fuels conflict, inequality, and division. It is intellectualised, institutionalised, and incredibly destructive.
