Middle/Senior School Bulletin Issue 17 / 28 November 2014

Middle & Senior School News Farewell Year 12 Congratulations to the Graduating class of 2014. You are an amazing group of young people and we thank you for your contributions over your time here at St Andrews.

you and your children. Finally, I want to acknowledge the dedication and commitment shown by our teaching staff, for if the children are the heartbeat of the College, then the staff are the nervous system that keeps them energized in their learning journey. The work they do in and out of classes is what keeps our students learning, growing and developing as learners and as well-rounded individuals. Non-teaching staff, teacher aides, groundsmen, administration, library, Tuckshop, and Uniform Shop also go above and beyond to ensure this is a College of flourishing and so to them we are also most grateful.

Year 12 Graduates, may God bless you and keep you safe through the journey of this life and may you remain confident in God’s love and plan for you. Above all else, seek joy, be hopeful and continue to share your light with the world!

I would also like to express immense appreciation and gratitude to Pastor Terry Unger who retires this year after 10 years of service at St Andrews. Terry has brought with him an uncanny way of simply being there when he is needed and has connected with students, staff, and families in real and meaningful ways aplenty. From spiritual guidance and ensuring our daily living in this community is grounded in Christ to being forever accepting and curious about others; this College has benefited greatly and been truly blessed by his humble service and presence. Pastor Terry, we will miss you and wish you and Grace every blessing on your journey ahead.

End of Year As the College year begins to come to a close and we finalize the students’ reports, I would like to offer a word of thanks to the students, one and all, for their exceptional approach to College life throughout the year. Their vibrancy is truly the heartbeat of our College. I would also like to thank our College parents for their unwavering support and partnership. We appreciate the relationships we hold with

Further Recognition of Excellence The recent Sports Awards night was a tribute to the exceptional standards that are being reached by our students in a wide range of sporting endeavours. It is a testimony to the talent and commitment of our students to such a wide range of sporting pursuits, and to see so many reaching elite levels of sporting performance. Congratulations to all involved.

Before the end of the year we will acknowledge student excellence at the Year 10 & 11 and Middle School Award assemblies. Top of Subject, Merit, Citizenship and Service Awards will be presented at these assemblies. All parents are welcome to come along and join these celebrations of excellence. • •

Years 10 - 11 Awards Assembly (Tuesday 2 December) at 2.00pm in the RBT Middle School Awards Assembly (Friday 5 December) at 8.30am in the RBT

Early in Term 1, 2015, our Academic Excellence, Academic Endeavour and Academic Improvement Awards will be presented for each year level based on their overall Semester Two results. Parents are also warmly invited to attend the Prep to Year 11 Christmas Service at 8.45am in the Multi-Purpose Hall next Tuesday 2 December to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Semester Two Reports and the Start of 2015 Reports are in the process of being completed and will be mailed home to parents in the first week of the holidays. Please use the feedback contained in the reports as a means of affirming your child’s effort and progress throughout the final semester, and also as a basis for setting new learning goals for 2015. A New Student Orientation morning will be held on Friday 23rd January for all Year 7 students (2015) and all new students in Years 8 – 12 from 8.30am in the Worship Centre. This morning is compulsory and ensures a smooth start for our new students. All Middle and Senior School classes resume on Tuesday 27th January and we are working towards notification of class lists through Parent Lounge in late January. Also, please remember that traffic congestion is likely on the first day, so please exercise extra care and patience. Staffing Updates I would like to take the opportunity to thank Mrs Andree Bemet; for her work in the Visual Arts Department this year; Mr Steve Garrett for his work with Senior Mathematics classes over the past two years, and Mr Ian Coles who has worked in our Design Technology Department this term. Your work has been sincerely appreciated. Next year, Mrs Ngaire Harman will return to St Andrews as the Visual Arts Coordinator, and both Mrs Christine Anderson (Mathematics) and Miss Karling MacAskill (Design Technology) re-join our staff. Both Mrs Miranda Magee and Mrs Kylie Tunkara will be on maternity leave for 2015 and we have appointed Mr Trent Ivett (English and SOSE) and Mrs Louise Thorpe (Year 7) to cover their absences. Best wishes to Kylie and Miranda as they await the arrival of their first child in the coming few weeks. Congratulations are also in order for Paul and Lisa McGilveray after the safe arrival of their first born, Hamish John McGilveray, last weekend. This is our last bulletin for 2014. May the coming Christmas season be a timely reminder of God’s blessings and the joy of knowing that Christ gave us the ultimate gift in send-

Chaplains Chat GRACE! I had the privilege of leading MS/SS worship in Week 4 around the theme of ‘Gratefulness for Grace that transforms our tainted hearts’. My preparation for the time involved questioning students across Years 7-12 about what they understood by the term Grace. A Year 10 fellow, conveyed a wonderful picture of Grace as it relates to how we live our lives, when he said – ‘Grace is when you extend love and care towards someone when they don’t deserve it.’ This is exactly how God treats us. None of us deserve God’s blessing due to our good behaviour or intentions. Even Mother Teresa fell short of being good enough to receive God’s love based on her performance – and yet our God extends his love to all of us, despite our sinfulness. This is Grace in its most amazing form. God’s love and care for us who do not deserve it. This extension of Grace to us works miracles in our world. It has the power to make beauty out of ugly things and find goodness in everything as U2 sang in a song titled ‘Grace’, 15 years ago. As we await the celebration of Christ’s arrival in the world at Christmas time it is helpful to remember that this historic event is the pivotal act of Grace performed by the allpowerful God of the universe. He chose to extend His love and acceptance to all of humanity through joining us in our joys and sorrows. It is this act of Grace that sets Christianity apart from all other religions. We are so blessed to receive God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense. We are assured of a place in God’s Kingdom now and into eternity through God’s goodwill and this empowers us to extend Grace towards others. May our celebration of God’s Grace towards us through Christ’s arrival in our world be truly heartfelt and joyful this year and I pray each of us can allow it to move us to be people who extend Grace towards ourselves and others in the New Year.

Middle School News Year 8 Personal Project On Wednesday 19 November a number of Year 8 students who had participated in our Term 3 Personal Project program had the opportunity to display their work for their families and the broader community. It was a wonderful afternoon in the Learning Hub to see our students place their passions on display. I was astounded at some of the amazing works that these students were able to produce – far beyond my own meagre talents in these areas. Well done to all those students who participated and I look forward to offering the opportunity to our current Year 7 students when they enter Year 8. Special thanks to Mr Kotzur for initiating the project and for his support in this (ad)venture.

and friends close to their hearts? Will they forgive those who do wrong by them and, just as importantly, forgive themselves the mistakes that will inevitably occur along life’s journey? Will they show humility as they triumph and compassion for those who are less fortunate? Will they hope to make a difference and through the quality of their efforts in all that they do make some mark on this world and leave it a better place? Will they appreciate all that they have, the person they are, the God who loves them and the world in all it’s glory? It is our hope that the Seniors who have spent so much time in our College have the skills, the will, the passion and the desire to take all that they have learned and make a difference. May all their hopes and dreams come true. Good luck, Seniors of 2014.

Middle School Leadership 2015 As this Bulletin is being prepared a number of nervous Year 8 students will have spoken at a Middle School Assembly about their willingness to become leaders in our community. In a stage of development where raising one’s hand to accept further responsibility is sometimes viewed with trepidation it was heartwarming to receive so many nominations for the leadership positions available in 2015. Of course, I expect that all students in Year 9 will act as leaders to their younger colleagues and display this through their daily actions at the College. Announcements regarding Middle School leaders for 2015 will be made at our final assembly. Thanks As this will be the final Bulletin for the year can I take this opportunity to thank all of the parent body and the wider community for its continued support throughout my second year at the College. I am enormously respectful of our role in educating your sons and daughters at this crucial time of their development. Please have a wonderful Christmas with each other. As always please feel free to contact me via the Middle School Administration should you wish to discuss any matters further. Tom Casey Head of Middle School tomc@salc.qld.edu.au

Senior School News Goodbye Seniors Last week saw us say goodbye to the Seniors of 2014. While they have finished one milestone, that of secondary education, many more exciting adventures await them as they step out into the real world. Will they seek justice to right the wrongs in society through service, compassion and courage? Will they love deeply and hold their family

Gratitude As the year draws to a close it is timely to reflect on all that I am grateful for in the Senior School: • the talented and dedicated staff • the students who challenge and inspire us every day • the beautiful environment in which we get to work • special traditions that make St Andrews the place that it is • the caring and supportive leadership of our Principal, Mr Kotzur and Deputy Principal, Mrs Warner. I really do feel we make a difference in the lives of our young people, it doesn’t get much better than that. Upcoming Event The next exciting event in the Senior School is the Year 10 and 11 final assembly on Tuesday 2 December. Parents are welcome to join us in the Ruth Butler Theatre at 2.00pm for the announcement of the full 2015 Leadership Team and presentation of Academic Awards. Congratulations to • Oliver Waddingham who won the overall GC Bulletin Capture Award for his photography and also the GC Places section. • Incoming Captaincy Team of Melissa Maessen, Finn McLynskey, Jacinda Pagels and Braden Cosier. I look forward to working with you next year. • All Year 11 students who nominated for a leadership position - it is a lengthy process of written application,

preliminary interviews, speeches to the student body, staff and student voting and final interview with Mr Kotzur and Mrs Warner. We have a strong team of leaders in Year 11 and I look forward to seeing how they continue the legacy of leadership that has been left by previous College Leaders. Uniform Expectations Can I remind parents and students regarding our uniform expectations. Jewellery is to be simple studs or sleepers in the lower lobes of the ears, a fine chain with a cross and no rings or facial piercings. Hair is to be a conservative cut and off the shoulders and not in the eyes. Sports shoes are to be predominantly white. Your support in assisting us to uphold the uniform expectations of our students is greatly appreciated. Any queries can be directed to myself at: tanias@salc.qld.edu.au Tania Stewart Head of Senior School

We urge them stay in touch as it is always pleasing to hear news of our alumni. Students’ OP results will be available from the QCAA Student Connect website from 9am Saturday 20 December. Student Development Summer Reading Long hot days have arrived and soon enough our students, our children will have ample opportunity and freedom to recreate. Built into this long hot break will be memories, adventures, growth and some responsibilities. Holiday jobs, chores, Christmas and the beach will create enough busyness. Hopefully this will be punctuated with periods of slower pace and opportunity for a different kind of leisure, for which I am proposing we each seek to have our kids read more.

Many of the students are accessing Watpad and Project Gutenberg with their mobile devices. Many students already have goals in mind, such as the Harry Potter series, Morris Gleitzman (humour), John Marsden (tomorrow when war began). Some recommendations for Australian authors might include Richard Flanagan (recent Man Booker prize), Geraldine Brooks (Pulitzer Prize winner). I have encouraged the students who meet on Friday’s for Philosopher’s Lunch Club to read ‘Sophie’s World’ as we will review a chapter of ideas each week in Term 1 2015. We will encourage St Andrews students again this break to attend to some ‘holiday homework’ which is: ‘Try a new food, Watch a new movie, Read a new book, Meet a new person and Experience a new sight’. The emphasis is on taking initiative, seeking out adventure and rich experiences, engaging the mind and having a sense of how to do ‘leisure’ well. I trust our students will make the most of the busy times and of the quiet times. James Nelson Director of Student Development jamesn@salc.qld.edu.au

Performing Arts News PAT 2015 As we move towards the end of the year, a few housekeeping points to note for students involved in our PAT program. Please note that unless a Cancellation Form is received, continuation is assumed. Please note this information needs to come to Performing Arts Admin, not the PAT Teacher as they are not responsible for timetables. The Cancellation Form is available on the College Website under The Arts. End of Year Concerts Over the past few weeks the Arts have celebrated and showcased many of our PAT Students in a series of Concerts including Animi Dance Concert, Evening of Song, Piano Soirees, Speech and Drama Concerts and Band Soiree. It is always an absolute joy to see our young performers on stage. Special thanks to our wonderful PAT teachers and Paul Oakley-Grant for their efforts to ensure that our young people have these opportunities to share their talents.

Children’s Theatre – A Collaboration Across the SubSchools It is always a wonderful experience to watch Senior and Junior Students working together. Recently Year 4 and the Year 10 Drama class had the opportunity to do this with a Dramatic Reading of How The Grinch Stole Christmas to Year 3s. The Year 10s worked in small groups to develop scenes featuring Year 4 students – who had the opportunity to sing, dance and perform.

Technology News Bring Your Own Technology – BYOT Program Years 10 – 12 Last year the College implemented a BYOT – “Bring Your Own Technology” environment in the Senior School. Under a BYOT program students are able to connect a technology device of their choice to the College WIFI and access electronic College resources. To date there has been a significant uptake of students utilizing their own technology for school related purposes. Allowing students to choose their preferred device enables them to work with technology they are already familiar and comfortable with. It also encourages greater responsibility of their device. As BYOT allows students access to the same devices at school and at home, it can extend learning opportunities to times and places outside of the classroom. To complement our BYOT program Microsoft Office 365 is now available for students to download onto their own device through our Microsoft School licensing agreement. Students can download software onto their own device using their student computer network login credentials. Senior students who currently use their own device to bring to School may find this software helpful if they do not already have Microsoft Office software installed. Please contact the IT Helpdesk located in the CRC for further information, or email Jo Schaefer - jos@salc.qld.edu.au direct. “BYOT makes one-to-one easier by simply leveraging the devices that students already have”.

Visual Arts News Overall Winner of the Gold Coast Bulletin CAPTURE Photographic Competition 2014 Each year the Gold Coast Bulletin holds a photographic competition called CAPTURE. Students from the Tweed and Gold Coast regions are invited to submit their digital photographs and also photographs that have been digitally manipulated with any choice of software. Out of 450 entrants we are proud to announce that Oliver Waddingham in Year 10 has taken out not only one of the categories but has been chosen as the overall winner for 2014. A huge congratulations is extended to Oliver. He is to be commended on his motivation, independent work ethic and creative flair. Sport News Sports Awards Evening Our Annual Years 4-12 Sports Awards Evening was held in the Ruth Butler Theatre Monday 17 November. Our Guest Speaker, Paralympics Basketballer and Australian Captain Bridie Kean, gave a most entertaining, educational and inspirational presentation. Many attendees have commented on what an amazing person Bridie is. We also had Tom Nicholls (Gold Coast Suns) and Jon Stimpson (Qld Cricket) assist with award presentations. A big thank you to Bede Young and Koala Koaches for sponsoring $50 Gift Vouchers from Intersport, Elanora (The Pines). We were able to present these vouchers to our Koala Koaches All-Rounder Winner, Jenna Mobberley, our Sport Captains, Kye Wylde and Annika Schache and our Sports Star Awardees, Jack Read, Sarah-Anne Hornsey (JS), Max Indriawan, Katie Hayward (MS) and Kane Richards, Tia Faulkner (SS). It was fantastic to see so many members of our College Community in attendance, including ex-student and Olympic swimmer James Roberts. I hope you enjoyed the celebration of our prominent sporting achievers for 2014. We will have more information in the upcoming STAR publication.

Futsal Hayden Anderson has been selected in the Gold Coast Under 12s Futsal Team. This is a vigorous process and starts with over 60 very talented players trialling over a weekend. It was an outstanding achievement to make the final team of 8. Triathlon Kieran Croker recently achieved 9th Place in Intermediate Male section at the All Schools Triathlon competition held in Kawana. This is an excellent result for one of the age group’s younger competitors. If you have any questions please contact Mr Manion at: andrewm@salc.qld.edu.au Andrew Manion Head of Sport

Netball News Recently 18 Year 7 students participated in the Mission Primary Schools Championship at Palm Beach. The girls played 9 games over the two days. In very hot, windy conditions they gave 100% effort and really enjoyed their time together.

Our ‘A’ team performed strongly over the entire weekend, finishing off with an outstanding game against one of the top teams. Lili James played very well. The girls finishing mid table. Our ‘B’ team included many girls who were new to the sport this year. They played very well and were very excited with their one win. Every one of these girls showed commitment and dedication to their team. They trained every Friday morning at 7am, turning up with big smiles! Thank you to the parents who supported the girls. Netball at St Andrews continues to grow. We now have many girls from Year 3 up to Year 12 playing netball for the College and outside clubs. I look forward to the next few years working with these enthusiastic girls. Mrs Lisa Roper Netball Co ordinator

Help your child conquer selfconsciousness

Self-consciousness can make school concerts and end of year events daunting for some students. Here are some ideas to help. 4 Catch kids being brave

Early teen girls often suffer from it, particularly if they are early or late maturers.

Some kids just hate to do anything in public for fear of being noticed and perhaps laughed at. They think, quite wrongly, that everyone is looking at them. The truth of the matter is that most people aren’t looking at them. If they are performing in a school concert most adults have eyes only for their children. They won’t really take too much notice of any other children, unless of course, they fluff their lines badly or muck-up big time.
