Junior School Bulletin Issue 4 / 16 March 2018
Junior School News Swimming Carnival Yesterday we held our re-scheduled Years 4-6 Swimming Carnival. It was a great event where competitors swam their hardest and showed great sportsmanship. Congratulations to Binging who were the winning house for the day.
We will meet on the corner of James and West streets by 9.00am on Wednesday 25 April, in preparation for the march which begins at 9.30am. As a group, we will then sit with other schools for the service at the Cenotaph, which should conclude by 10.30am. Please be aware that parking may be difficult. I highly recommend carpooling and/or allowing enough time to park nearby and walk into Burleigh. Three Way Conferences The Three Way Conferences are one way in which we report to you your child’s progress at school. It was great to see so many parents taking up this opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher. From my walk through, it looked like there was very healthy dialogue, the students were affirmed in the areas that they are working well on and given goals to improve. Farewell for Mrs Becky Hill The farewell service for our much loved Mrs Becky Hill (Japanese teacher and LOTE Head of Department) will be held at the Worship Centre at St Andrews next Saturday 24 March at 11am. All members of our community are warmly invited to attend.
Car Park Angels In the upcoming weeks, you may see some additional helpers beginning to appear in the Junior School carpark each morning. The ‘Carpark Angels’ (Year 9 students) will be on hand to help your children out of the car, with their school bags and escort them safely to their designated area.
In Brief – Celebrating the Good Stuff • The Mini Musos are well underway and are starting to learn some new songs. It is a real pleasure to see the students begin their musical journey. • The students in Year 4 had a visit from the Science Guy. He had many hands on learning experiences. In the famous words of “Don’t try this at home”, one of the experiments was to put a magnet onto the screen of a tv and ‘watch’ what happens.
Commonwealth Games We are looking forward to the Commonwealth Games that will be occurring over the school holidays. We have a number of staff and students who will be involved in the games in one form or another. We look forward to Bryce U’Ren carrying the Queen’s baton as it works its way to the Opening Ceremony. The OSHC and ELC will be operating as per normal over the first term break. A reminder that there will be a student free day on Monday 16 April.

ANZAC Day March Soon after school starts in Term 2, we will be getting ready for the ANZAC day parade. As has been the custom for a number of years, all students from St Andrews are invited to march behind the College banner. Students wishing to march are asked to wear their full college uniform (including formal hats).
St Andrews helps out in Bahareduk…. We have a wonderful culture within St Andrews of ‘helping out’. This extends all the way from the ELC through to Year 12 and beyond to the parent body and the Church community too. We support many causes - large and small financially and practically. It is tangible evidence of bringing love to life.

Two years ago the Senior School conducted its first mission
adventure to a tiny village in East Timor called Bahareduk. This involved 9 students and 2 staff travelling to the remote village and assisting in the construction of houses. It was an awesome experience for those of us who were fortunate enough to go and visit. Seeing community development first-hand and actually be involved was life impacting for our
with our Year 3-5 students. Cameron will be engaging Year 3 students in a writing workshop exploring exciting and descriptive language. Year 4 students will be exploring techniques to create blockbuster action stories – think gripping suspense scenes, epic action encounters and holdon-to-your-seat cliff-hangers. Year 5 students will be taking a behind-the-scenes look at creating a book, and applying their own creative components. Students and teachers are looking forward to a fantastic day! In conjunction with the Author Visit, St Andrews Lutheran College families have a special opportunity to purchase signed and personalised copies of Cameron’s books at special prices. Individual items are $15 each and there are also exclusive book sets available. Students will receive an order form on the day of the workshops. Forms and payment can be returned the following Monday 23 April, to the Library. Cameron will personally sign books (including the child’s name and a message), and students will receive their books within the following fortnight.
students and staff. In the lead up to going, the small group set about fund-raising on behalf of the people of Bahareduk. The East Timorese have the skills within their community to construct their cement-block houses but basically have no means to finance the required materials. They rely heavily on donations to be able to purchase cement, wood and iron used for construction. In 2016 the St Andrews Community was amazing in its support of the people of Bahareduk. The Junior School alone contributed just over $12,000 through the walkathon held in May 2016. All of this money, plus other funds raised have been forwarded directly to the people of Bahareduk, except for a $500 fee needed by the Australian government to ensure all of what has occurred is above board. As the second trip approaches at a rapid rate…. We fly out on Tuesday 26 June. We are once again setting about enlisting support of the St Andrews community to assist our neighbours in Bahareduk. A major initiative this year will be the Junior School Cross Country and Fun Run. There will be opportunity for the students to secure sponsorship for completing their run in aid of purchasing building materials for the village. Students will have a form come home in the next few days outlining the exact details for this event. Other fundraising activities will occur in the months leading up to the team travelling to Bahareduk in June/July and if anyone would like to assist in any manner, it would be greatly appreciated. The support in 2016 was fantastic and on behalf of the 2018 team we hope that we can replicate and if not surpass the efforts of 2 years ago.
Commonwealth Games We have been getting very excited about the upcoming Commonwealth Games in the Junior School Library. A book display that features fiction and non-fiction books about different sports and sportspeople has been very popular. A variety of activities will be available for students to complete during lunch time.

Languages News Kokuren Nature Study Group On Tuesday 27 March, we will welcome 25 Japanese students into Years 4- 6 for a half day visit. Buddies have been assigned in each class to look after the Japanese students on this day. These visits are important to foster cultural understanding and to promote international mindedness. We hope to have many more visits throughout the year. Please say Konnichiwa to the students if you see them on campus. Tokyo 2020 The Tokyo 2020 mascots have been revealed. Over the next few weeks, the mascots will be hiding around our Junior School. If your child finds one, they are asked to bring it to Taki Sensei to receive a prize.
Any of our team members who wish to have ‘Inter Lutheran Sports Rep 2018’ embroidered on their navy blue sports shirt, should leave their CLEARLY NAMED shirt at Junior School Admin before the end of term so that this can be done during the break. HINTERLAND DISTRICT SPORT TRIALS All of the dates are listed on various notice boards around the College. Reminders will be in student notices and various College News sites as trial dates approach, but it is every students’ OWN responsibility to research the dates and contact Mr. Manion if they are interested in attending these events. Trials coming up for 12 year olds include Soccer, Girls’ Rugby League and Softball. TENNIS Angus Slater and Connor Tydd represented St Andrews at the Interschool Tennis competition at Queens Park on Sunday 25 February.
