Junior School Bulletin Issue 12 / 2 September 2016

Junior School News Student Led Conferences It was great to see so many parents at the recent Student Led Conferences. The conferences are one part of the reporting process. It was encouraging to see the children sharing their work with their parents and explain their thinking process. When students are able to articulate their learning we know that their understanding is solidified and deepened.

Flash Mob There was an unusual conclusion to our Week 8 Assembly. About 150 parents and teachers got up from their seats and started dancing to Uptown Funk. There were stretch limos, trumpets, costumes and some outstanding dancing. The students really enjoyed it and joined in. Thank you to Bec Leo and Cathie Hanson for their organization of the ‘Flash Mob’ dance. I’m sure it will be a highlight for many of our students for months to come.

Trivia Night The Trivia Night was an outstanding success with 38 teams battling it out for trivia supremacy. There was also a competition for best dressed team and table with lots of table groups going to extraordinary lengths to dress in their chosen country’s national colours. There were an amazing number of businesses that supported the night and the College would like to thank them for their generosity. While there was $7130 raised to support the redevelopment of J Block after the fire, the focus for the night was to come together as community and have some fun. This goal was certainly achieved and the College would like to say a huge thank you to parent, Jessica Russell for doing an outstanding job organizing the Trivia Night.

Year 1 Generation Day It was terrific to see so many grandparents of Year 1 students at school on Monday to celebrate Generation Day. It was an important opportunity for the students to learn from their grandparents about what life was like when they were younger. Thank you to those grandparents who travelled long distances to be with their grandchildren on this day. Your grandchildren appreciated it greatly.

Junior School Presentation Night The annual Junior School Presentation Night will be held on Monday 28 November 2016 beginning at 6:30pm in the Multi Purpose Hall. The theme for the night is “A Place to Flourish” and will conclude with the graduation of Year 6 students into Middle School. It is also an opportunity to showcase some of the amazing things that Junior School students have done over the course of the year. This is a compulsory event for students in Years 4-6. Please keep this date free. Fete Planning has begun for next year’s Fete. This is a great community event that relies on the help of volunteers. Jess Gisler will be convening the 2017 Fete. As with all of these big events, many hands make light work and are necessary to contribute to the overall success of the event, so we would love for you to get involved. Stay tuned for further information. Next year’s Fete will be held on Saturday 20 May 2017. P-3 Mini Olympics Wednesday 14 September will see the holding of the Annual P-3 Sports Carnival or ‘Mini Olympics’. This is one of the highlights of our Junior School calendar and we are hoping for a big turnout of parents and friends as supporters. The focus for students, as always, on such days, is on doing your very best and encouraging others in the process. The Mini Olympics is an exciting opportunity for our P-3 students to participate in a variety of different track and field based activities, and it showcases their talents to you! The carnival will be held in two parts: Prep and Year 1 Carnival from 11.30am–12.55pm Years 2 and 3 Carnival from 1:30pm– 2:55pm. 10 What Questions to Develop a Growth Mindset in Children I came across this on my twitter feed recently from J Mad @ TheMadClass about questions you can you ask your children at the dinner table to help develop a growth mindset. Most of the time when you ask your children “How was school today?”, you will usually get a response “OK”. The following questions will encourage your children to think more deeply about their responses as well as help to foster a growth mindset of seeing that hard work and effort are needed for success. They will also see that making mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow.

End of Term This will be the last bulletin for the term. Parents are reminded that the last day for the Term is Thursday 15 September and school resumes again Tuesday 4 October. As always, please use this time as an opportunity for the children to recharge their batteries and take a break from the routine of school life. It is really important for students to enjoy a good book and spend some time enjoying the great outdoors. The College also encourages families to put age appropriate restrictions on the use of electronic devices. Father’s Day I hope all of our Fathers enjoy a very special day on Sunday as they celebrate Father’s Day. Thank you to the P & F for providing some fantastic goodies for the children to buy for their dads. Darrin Schumacher Head of Junior School

ELC News Book Fair has been a great success, children coming out and reading stories and selecting new books for home. We were close to reaching the target of $1000, that will enable us to purchase around $250 worth of new books for the ELC. Please remember if your child is unwell to keep them at home to reduce the spread of infection and calls to you at work to collect your child. Bronwyn Waters ELC Director

Chaplains Chat Do not be afraid – I am with you! I am your God – let nothing terrify you! I will make you strong and help you; I will protect you and save you. – Isaiah 41:10 (GNT) Encouragement. Sometimes we all need a little bit of encouragement. It doesn’t matter what our qualifications are. It doesn’t matter how old we are. It doesn’t matter what our circumstances are. What matters is that we receive the encouragement we need to keep on keeping on. After all, none of us are made of steel. I believe that God has ordered life in such a way that we each participate in receiving encouragement and giving encouragement to others. This is one of the natural benefits of living in a romantic relationship with another person – each person encourages the other and seeks the best for them. However, encouragement is not restricted to romantic relationships. It should form part of all relationships and interactions that we have.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School & PYP Coordinator Year 6 PYP Exhibition In recent weeks, our Year 6 classrooms have been buzzing with enthusiastic young inquirers who are preparing for their PYP Exhibition. Students have selected a real world topic that is of interest to them and groups have been formulated. The inquiry will be based on the Transdisciplinary Theme of ‘Who We Are.’ To support students with managing the inquiry, mentors from across the Junior School Staff have been identified. Exhibition groups are communicating regularly on a weekly basis with their mentors during negotiated meeting times. The primary role of the mentor is to act as a guide and resource in the accomplishment of specific tasks during the exhibition process. Each student in the group is supported in a number of ways by their mentor e.g. students are encouraged to ask questions, review resources, and make contact with organisations.

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week the Year 12 students completed the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test. To aid any last minute nerves and panic during the exams, staff and students across the College helped put together written messages of encouragement on a “message wall” for the students to see. I wish I could have been there to see their faces light up when they saw the “message wall” and understood from it that all staff and students in the College were cheering them on and wishing them the very best. One of the greatest encouragers (and also the oldest) is God. He knows us better than we know ourselves and, as a result, He knows that we need encouragement. Frequently in the Bible, you can see the following pattern: 1) a person is given responsibility, 2) the person believes they cannot do it, 3) God encourages them and assures them that they can, and 4) they achieve or do what was required with God’s help. It happened to Moses, Joshua, Elijah, David, Mary and even Jesus. This is good news to all those who are facing impossible challenges and uncertainties. Does that mean God encourages everything we do? No. Not everything we do is good or God-pleasing. However, there are many things that we do that God does encourage and help. These are normally related to the stations or vocations we have in life. For example, if God has called us into parenthood then He will encourage us in that role. If God has given us employment or other work, then He will encourage us to keep it and serve others with our gifts. If God has given us the gift of parents then He will encourage us to love, serve and obey them even when it is hard or difficult to do so. God is the ultimate encourager. When did you last receive His encouragement? Pay attention for it. It may just come through the voice, words or actions of another. Nathan Glover Pastor

The students have also been engaged in developing a selfportrait that explores the emotional, spiritual, physical, social and personal well-being as part of the ‘Who We Are’ Transdisciplinary Theme. As part of this process, they have taken ‘selfies’ with their iPad to capture an image of themselves (special permission was granted for this task!). The students are now exploring the use of different artistic techniques to determine which medium they will use to create their own self-portrait. The students have been accessing the Art Room facilities in the Senior School and Mrs Ngaire Harman has been sharing her expertise and knowledge about artists who painted self-portraits of themselves with the students. These pieces of artwork created by the students will be on display in the MPH during the Exhibition. Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone. Joshua 1:9 (NLT) Jacqueline Faulkner Deputy Head of Junior School PYP Coordinator

Performing Arts News Gold Coast Eisteddfod Wrap Up Over the past few weeks hundreds of our students represented the College at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod in bands, choirs and dance troupes. It has been a wonderful few weeks where we have achieved excellent results. Congratulations to all involved. Despite the many challenges faced, the standard of performance presented was outstanding and reflected in our overall placings. Gr 3 Animi - 2nd Combined Dance Troupe feat Percussion Ensemble - 2nd Golden Clef Choir - 3rd Gr 4 Animi - 3rd Jazzettes - 3rd MS Elite Contemporary - VHC Combined Dance Troupe - VHC x 2 Semitone Choir - VHC Jazz Band - HC JS Concert Band - HC Razzamatazz - HC So we come to the end of eisteddfod. It’s exciting to note that bands have come away with two highly commended positions over the last week. This doesn’t include the fantastic effort of our percussion ensembles who with the dancers came home second with their performance of Tribal. However, I came away with something more powerful than a couple of certificates or trophies. I feel this year has seen our instrumental program maturing, with bands not only moving up a division but still achieving well. I go to band rehearsals and feel I am part of a family with students supporting each other, joking with one another and starting to play well together. It is this sense of family that creates a great band. Students turn up not only to play but to enjoy the companionship. This involvement creates a much more cohesive band and develops stronger links musically. It is sometimes easy to be lost in the slow development of things when you are part of them. Six years ago we were a school with a small but fine Jazz band and an 11 member beginner concert band. This year I attend rehearsals for 3 concert bands a week, a talented Jazz band and a 20 piece string ensemble. The journey is slow but the destination is here with us now. To all performers, thank you for representing the college so admirably, we are proud of all the effort you put into making our programs such a success. Take time to look around you and see just how successful you are, have been and are going to be. Practice more! Paul Oakley-Grant, Music Teacher

Somerset Festival for Young Performers Congratulations to all our St Andrews PAT Drama students from Years 1-8 who performed at the Somerset Festival for Young Performers at Somerset College over the weekend of the 20 and 21 August. Over one hundred drama students performed in a variety of categories including Mime, Group Drama, Monologues and Poetry. The students achieved amazing results and performed with confidence and ability. They all demonstrated a very positive attitude in the face of certain obstacles, including having to fill in last minute for unwell students and adapting scenes creatively due to absences. The weekend produced a multitude of ribbons, smiling faces and happy memories. A special thank you to our dedicated parents, who supported their children at every turn, rehearsing lines, organizing costumes and giving up their weekend.
