Junior School Bulletin Issue 10 / 5 August 2016
Junior School News New Sound System in the Bus Shelter Thank you to the Parents and Friends for kindly donating the funds to purchase the sound system in the bus shelter. It has made it so much easier for the children to hear their names called and the traffic is flowing smoothly. Thank you to the Traffic Safety Attendants for their continued work in getting the children to their cars safely and efficiently. Football (Soccer) Congratulations to the Year 5 boys and girls football teams who played in the champion of champions matches recently. Whilst playing extremely well and giving their all, the girls unfortunately were beaten. The boys played well as a team and won their match and have qualified for the next stage of the tournament in Brisbane. We wish them well.
Years 5/6 Classrooms and STEAM Room The Years 5 and 6 classrooms will be handed back to the College on Tuesday 9 August. The classrooms have been designed to create open learning environments that are flexible and enable a range of learning experiences to be undertaken. The STEAM Room will also be completed on Tuesday 9 August. It will be used as a temporary Music room as the C Block demountable is refitted. STEAM is an acronym for the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. By its very nature it is transdisciplinary and uses the design process to solve real world problems. Undertaking real world problems and projects related to the Units of Inquiry, students apply the 5 essential elements of the PYP to shape the learning experience. It is about equipping the students with necessary skills, knowledge and understanding to solve complex problems. We look forward to the students getting in and using the STEAM room for their inquiries and completing hands on learning experiences. Future activities that may be conducted in this room include students telling fables through the use of traditional Aboriginal art techniques (Year 4), creating a chair to hold their mascot and choosing the best materials to complete the project (Prep), or design and construct a musical instrument (Year 1). Through having a dedicated space to do some of these activities, the students can delve deeper into the topics studied. Japanese Visitors Over the past two weeks we have had a number of Japanese visitors at the College. Some families have billeted Japanese students in their homes for the week. Thank you to those families involved. We have had other groups who have joined our Junior School classes. The exchange helps our students get a greater understanding of the Japanese culture, as well as an opportunity to practice their Japanese language skills.
SEAT Recently we had a guest speaker come and speak to the children about spinal safety awareness and what they can do to protect their spines. The three key messages were: 1. Always wear a seatbelt 2. Wear a helmet when riding your bike 3. Check the depth of the water before you dive in The guest speaker shared his personal story about how he ended up in a wheelchair and reinforced the key safety messages in a powerful way.
Use of Playground - After School Parents are reminded that children are not to be playing in the playgrounds after school. There are an increasing number of students who are playing in the playgrounds unsupervised and this compromises the College’s duty of care and the safety of your children. If you have a meeting with a teacher after school, your children will need to wait in or outside the classroom or in Junior School Administration. The playgrounds are also designated OSHC play areas and part of their guidelines stipulate that only OSHC enrolled children can play in those areas while the OSHC is operating. Thank you for your support. Darrin Schumacher Head of Junior School
ELC News The Pre Prep children have really enjoyed spending time on the College oval over the last few weeks, exploring the environment and building a connection with the College in preparation for school next year.
Chaplains Chat “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” - Hebrews 10:24-25 (NKJV) What a privilege it is to teach Christian Studies to students within the College. As we work through the curriculum it provides scope and purpose to examine what is important in life. The insights I have gained personally down through the years and continue to bump into are so helpful. I thoroughly enjoy my role as a Physical Education and Science teacher. It was these areas that drew me into the teaching profession many years ago but these subjects tend to deal with important facts but don’t leave the room Christian Studies allows to investigate the real nitty-gritty of life. Year 12 CS is currently investigating work/life balance and the pursuit of employment in the future that will be life giving for the person engaged within it and for the wider community. Challenging questions are asked of our students. Such as, will you pursue work that will pay well, simply for the pay packet, or will you pursue work that contributes to the greater good? What are your motives as you consider your future? What values will you hold as your guide in life ahead? Year 9 CS is looking at the difficult question of ‘who are you’ - what is your true identity? As we investigated this question, we arrived at the idea that the values we hold as most important and the ability to act on these values speak most loudly to who we really are. These areas of investigation can be quite contentious as the subject endeavours to look at the very essence of what really matters. However the opportunity afforded students to genuinely consider what matters most is so worthwhile. We live in a culture that values personal freedom and individual rights. We all benefit from this as it allows each of us freedom to pursue what we think is most important. But the shortcomings associated with this are significant. The constant focus on the individual and pursuing individual fulfilment tends to isolate people and work against the strengthening of family connection and living in community. Thankfully, God values every individual and also longs for us to share life together. Our God is a God of love and love only occurs in relationships.
Book Fair will be running from 15-19 August if you would like to come and visit! Bronwyn Waters ELC Director
Unfortunately, our culture promotes the individual above all else. At St Andrews, God leads us to value the individual but we recognise that as individuals we are designed to live in relationship with others and in particular in relationship with our Creator. It is within this relationship that life makes sense and we are led to be people of love and action. It is a great place to be. Graeme Schache Chaplain
From the Deputy Head of Junior School & PYP Coordinator
Our Year 6 students have recently commenced their PYP Exhibition journey. This culminating experience is undertaken each year by the Year 6 cohort as it is the final year in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) at St Andrews. The Exhibition represents a significant event for a PYP school and each student is required to demonstrate their engagement with the five essential elements: knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and action.
Students in Years 4-6 were invited earlier in the year to participate in the International Competitions & Assessments for Schools (ICAS) for Science, Computer Skills, Writing, Spelling, English and Mathematics. The students have completed the papers on various dates throughout Term Two. We still have one paper to sit this term - Mathematics on Tuesday 16 August. This competition provides an opportunity for students to gain a measure of their own achievement in an external assessment situation. Certificates are awarded to each Year level as follows: High Distinction: to the top 1% of participants Distinction: to the next 10% of participants Credit: to the next 20% of participants We recently received the results for the Science and Digital Technologies competitions. The Exhibition Unit this year will sit under the transdisciplinary theme of ‘Who We Are.’ The students will be involved in an inquiry process that enables them to identify, investigate and offer solutions to real-life issues or problems whilst working collaboratively. The students have been involved in a number of learning engagements to commence the inquiry process. One experience was our ‘Living Library’. The Living Library provocation is a way to introduce ideas: to promote wonderings and questions. A number of guest speakers were invited to be part of our Living Library and they shared their expertise in a particular area. The students are now considering potential areas for further inquiry.
Parent information regarding the up-coming Student-Led Conferences will be available soon. The conferences this year will be held on Thursday 25 August. All families will need to book in for a time through Parent Teacher On-Line (PTO) via the College website.
A massive thank you to all of the parents who recently completed the IB Primary Years Programme survey online. I was delighted with the number of responses that we received. This information is most valuable in terms of ensuring we can continue to assist parents in understanding the IB PYP programme and why we do what we do. I will be in contact shortly with the parents who indicated that they would be interested in finding out more about our upcoming IB PYP Evaluation Visit. Love one another with brotherly affection as members of one family, giving precedence and showing honour to one another. - Romans 12:10 (NIV) Jacqueline Faulkner Deputy Head of Junior School PYP Coordinator

Annual Composers Competition 2016 It is wonderful to see these talented students rewarded for their commitment to not only write their works but also to develop and rehearse them for performance on the day. It was a very positive experience for all involved and certainly a celebration of the creative arts. The adjudicator Mickal Rosiak was very impressed with the “high quality” of compositions this year.

Sport News Hinterland District and South Coast Sport Trials St Andrews continues to have numerous students achieving selection in Representative teams through the Hinterland District and South Coast Regional School Sport trials. Latest achievements include: • Jordyn Hinds has been selected to attend the final trial for the Hinterland District 12 years Cricket team. • Joesi Gisinger was a member of the South Coast 11 years Netball team which won their State Championships. Years 5/6 Inter School Sport Our Year 5A Soccer Premiership teams recently had the opportunity to play off for a berth at the South East Queensland School Championships. Our Boys team had an outstanding game and defeated Broadbeach 5-3. It was a nail biting second half. The boys lead 3-0 at half time before Broadbeach started to fight back. Fortunately, the boys always had their noses in front and came away with a satisfying victory. Charlie Corke stood out up front whilst Lachlan Campbell, Hugh Clayfield-Hoskin and Finn Rohdich were solid at the back. All the boys made valuable contributions and showed what team work, humility and sportsmanship are all about. The girls also displayed outstanding commitment and teamwork but were defeated by a very talented Worongary team. Mia Cuffe was absolutely outstanding as our Goalkeeper. Very timely performance as we have an ex-St Andrews student in Mackenzie Arnold competing at the Olympic Games as Goalkeeper for the Australian Women’s team. All Years 5 and 6 students are now training for the Semester 2 sports competition which will begin later in the term. Hinterland District School Sport Track and Field Trials The Hinterland Track and Field Trials were held Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 August. St Andrews had fifty athletes from 10 to 17 years competing over the two days. We look forward to publishing some results very soon. SLAPS Track and Field Mr Manion will soon announce the team for the Years 4-6 Inter Lutheran Track and Field Carnival which will be held at QSAC, Kedron on Wednesday 31 August. St Andrews Years 4-6 Athletics Carnival The Years 4-6 Athletics Carnival was held Friday 15 July at Pizzey Park Athletics Track. Binging achieved first place. As you can see below, the points were very close indeed. B
