f you’ve spent any time in Southsea lately, strolling along the promenade, you can’t help (I hope you’ll agree) but be impressed by yet another outstanding transformation with the opening of the latest phase of the sea defences. The imagination and creativity, I’m sure, will guarantee Southsea’s place as a place to visit for all the family. You still have to dodge ambitious seagulls, but the works are maintaining Southsea’s popularity as a place to live as well as keeping us dry!

Southsea’s housing market is holding its own at the moment. While some parts of the UK have been wobbling, the local market has remained steady, with a hint of optimism. Prices have softened slightly compared with the previous year, but not to the point of doom. The market seems to have taken a deep breath and decided to pace itself.

We’ve taken on some outstanding homes in recent months across every sector of the market. When priced correctly and in the right condition, they are selling. Our performance in the commercial sector is especially noteworthy, as investors continue to regard it as a safe and stable environment, reinforced by the more structured and transparent legal landscape surrounding commercial tenancies.

My longer-term concerns are that if landlords decide to exit the rental market, it may well lead to a shortage of available rental properties, which could eventually increase rents. Our property management team have been working hard to see how AI can add value to our service without detracting from the personal approach that our tenants and landlords know us for.

Trying to predict what 2026 holds for the housing market as I write is not easy, as so many factors, from the Middle East to the domestic political scene, remain fluid and outcomes are uncertain. But our experience of recent weeks has been that sensibly priced properties are selling, and those looking for rentals are still active, so it’s not all bad news!

We’re delighted to see so many celebrations ahead for Portsmouth100 – as a local business founded back in 1883, this milestone feels particularly meaningful. We’ve seen a lot, and that longevity has undoubtedly shaped our perspective as local experts. So, we thought we’d take a look back at some of our city’s most notable moments and how they’ve shaped today’s property market.

Portsmouth’s public library, the Evening News, the Gosport ferry, and Chinneck Shaw(!) are all founded.

After significant growth, Portsmouth becomes an official county borough.

The King grants us city status after years of lobbying, saying “the County Borough of Portsmouth shall be a City and shall be called and styled ‘The City of Portsmouth.’”

The Mayor is elevated to Lord Mayor, reflecting our city’s rising national importance, and significant new housing developments kick off.

Portsmouth win the FA Cup, truly reinforcing our cultural identity! Our founder, JS Chinneck, was even a director of the club from 1938–1951.

WWII brings devastation, with around 20% of houses destroyed –a challenging yet major turning point for our housing landscape.

Post-war recovery drives rapid council house building, shaping many of today’s residential areas.

Southsea Castle is retired from active service and becomes a public heritage site.

The University has helped connect me to people and businesses I've had the pleasure of working with,’ said Charles Oduk II, his heart set on collaboration. ‘This has given me invaluable work experience, clarified my vision and established a professional foundation I can continue to build on in my career.’

Meanwhile, Gaia Cawley had just graduated, but she was too ambitious to stop there. ‘I wanted to learn even more and delve deeper into a specialist area,’ she explained. ‘Also,’ she added, ‘to get a high paying job within this area, it is recommended to do a Master’s.’

Jordan Richards had reached the same conclusion. For his Master’s, the choice was clear: ‘The coursework has all been based on real-world scenarios, which I feel makes the course at Portsmouth unique.’

Each wanted to follow a different professional path. Gaia felt her Master’s degree in Criminal Justice would lead both to higher pay and to a role where she could ‘have a positive, meaningful impact on policy.’ And Jordan, studying MSc Civil Engineering, knew he would excel thanks to ‘the advice of lecturers and guest speakers, who are passionate about their field of work.’

Whatever path you want your career to follow, from a total change to a boost up the ranks, it can start with a postgraduate degree, such as a Master’s or PhD. And, at the University of Portsmouth, you could start studying as soon as September 2026.

And for Jordan, the career support has been a big help: ‘I’m working part time around my studies. ater — it’s everywhere. It plays a big role in our everyday lives, whether that’s going for a swim in your local pool, a trip to the beach, or bathtime at home. What can be a really fun experience can also bring huge anxiety for many parents.

If I went for a swim, it was simple – I just had to worry about me. And I can swim… very well, in fact (I am an Olympic swimmer and Britain’s first female world champion). Growing up in Portsmouth, it was non-negotiable that I learnt to swim. Not just swim to the government’s criteria (25 m by the end of KS2), but actually be able to swim safely and save myself should I ever get into difficulties in the water, which, in my opinion, should be a minimum of 100 m! And then my daughter was born.

Being a baby turning 1 in lockdown meant activities were halted. Visits to the local beaches, Eastney being a favourite, became a regular occurrence when pools became inaccessible. Very quickly, confidence gave way to fear. As a parent, your instinct is to protect. You set rules, you watch closely, you keep within arm’s reach - and still, there’s that nagging worry in the back of your head. What if something goes wrong? Drowning is fast and silent, nothing like what is often portrayed in films, with arms flailing and lots of shouting and splashing. It’s quiet. This is what makes water safety feel so overwhelming. I created the Gogglehedz: story-led books about

water safety to help families feel confident and prepared around water. Engaging stories help children gain practical knowledge and habits that can make a difference. It’s about making sure fun can happen safely, and about reminding parents what’s safe, as it’s often we who get complacent or distracted.

We live in an area where water is part of our lifestyle, and these conversations matter even more. With Hilsea Lido reopening (I can’t wait!) and open-water swimming becoming more popular in recent years as it’s such a nice way to connect with nature and boost our wellbeing, there are also more risks, including cold-water shock, tidal changes and unpredictable conditions. These shouldn’t be feared, just respected.

The same applies in swimming pools. They may be controlled, but they still require vigilance and constant attention. Even the strongest swimmers need active supervision. I, for one, would never swim alone, and I know my capabilities. Many parents I speak to ask what to look for, and that is where education is powerful. Knowing how to supervise effectively and recognising early signs of distress can transform uncertainty into calm awareness.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that water safety is only about swimming ability, but it is much broader than that. It’s about awareness, preparation, and supervision. A calm-looking surface can still hide many risks. That small moment of distraction, such as checking a phone or turning to speak to someone, can be all it takes.

icture this, walking through Southsea Common after a long day at the beach, with the trees in full bloom. You move further inland towards Castle Road, and the streets begin to fill with people sitting outside. Perhaps you meet friends or end up chatting to strangers at the same table as you.

Why not start your evening at Delaneys, a relaxed bistro that is taking full advantage of the new pedestrianisation works, with a handful of outdoor tables catching the last of the evening light. Delaneys now offers a gorgeous evening menu, open until late from Wednesday to

Saturday, making it an easy place to stop and stay for a while.

From here, Elm Grove and Albert Road have more pubs, and the narrower pavements on Albert Road don’t stop the outdoor dining culture. Places such as The Panormus Pizzeria offer something a little more special. Tucked away at the back of the restaurant is a beautiful garden, perfect for a summer’s evening.

Not too far from Albert Road, The Garden on Florence Road is back open for the summer season. It offers something a little different, with

sharing plates outside in the shaded garden, perfectly suited to a slower pace on a summer evening. For something with a bit more character, Sant Yago on Clarendon Road remains a strong favourite of mine, and the cocktail bar downstairs is a great space on evenings that are a little cooler. This venue offers a more intimate setting, where you can share tapas with a loved one.

So why not follow one of my suggested routes and find a place that feels right for you? The beauty of Southsea is that everything is within easy reach. But if you’re looking for the ultimate feeling of relaxation and escapism this summer, why not pop across to the Isle of Wight for the day?

We are spoilt for choice in Southsea, but rather than settling in one place for the whole evening, try stopping at a couple of places, even if it's just for a drink. Take in the atmosphere, speak to the staff, check out the menu for a future occasion, and get a real feel for each place. You don't always need a full meal to enjoy what somewhere has to offer.

With so many cruise passengers arriving in Portsmouth this summer, there is a real opportunity to bring people together from across the world, as tourists flock to our great

THE BATTLE OF SOUTHSEA, AUGUST 1874

The Battle of Southsea has come to represent the broader struggle for workers’ rights and is a historic and local example of the social and economic tensions in Victorian Britain.

Britain was undergoing a period of rapid industrialisation. Portsmouth was a prime example, with its naval port and industrial hub. Thousands came to work in the dockyards, but despite the economic boom, workers lived on low wages and in harsh conditions, fuelling discontent.

The unrest between the classes was partly due to the rise of Southsea, which developed as a suburb for the middle classes on the outskirts of the more industrial Portsmouth.

In August 1874, the unpopular owners of Southsea Pier erected a barrier between the Pier and the nearby Assembly Rooms. The barrier was set across a Right of Way, blocking the route between the Common, the Hot walls and the beach, where many workers bathed, sparking a riot. Southsea Common became the centre of mounting tension. Protests lasting four days took place on the Pier, and the barrier was demolished and burnt on the beach.

the militia and law enforcement, which spiralled into chaos. Local authorities summoned militias and extra police, worsening the unrest.

There was pandemonium as protesters, armed with sticks and stones, faced off against a well-equipped and organised militia. The peaceful protest erupted into a full-scale riot. There was the noise of breaking glass, shouting and gunfire. Buildings were damaged, fires broke out, and both sides were involved in a brutal and frightening struggle that lasted hours.

The community on all sides was left reeling from the violence.

Strike leaders and participants were arrested and faced severe penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines. The dockworkers’ strike was crushed, and demands for better working conditions and pay were not met immediately.

However, the level of violence brought the harsh realities of industrial workers’ lives into the national spotlight, sparking a public outcry: immediate reforms were scarce, but the event sowed the seeds for future labour rights.

GREENER GARDENING WITH PORTSMOUTH IN BLOOM

Long-time denizens of Southsea will remember Portsmouth in Bloom, an annual competition that recognised the gardening prowess of residents, business owners, allotment holders, schools and the like. Set up in the mid 1960s, the contest ran until the late 2010s before disappearing.

categories for people to enter – there were a mind-blowing 36 in 2004 –but the revived event has just 10 with an emphasis on gardens that are ecofriendly, making a difference to wildlife and the environment.

HOW TO BECOME A GREENER GARDENER

Well, the good news is that it’s making a return this year as part of Portsmouth100, a year-long programme of events celebrating the city’s centenary. It’s being run by Portsmouth City Council in partnership with Portsmouth News and Portsmouth Water, with expert guidance from myself.

Whether you fancy entering the competition or not, it’s easy to become a greener gardener, working with nature, rather than against it. For example, filling gaps with wildlife friendly plants, ditching chemical pesticides and taking a more relaxed approach to maintenance, will all make a big difference.

Many of us treat water as an infinite resource, splashing it around the garden without a second thought. However, it should be considered a precious resource and used with care. In my experience, targeted watering (aiming just above the root zone) is far more effective and less wasteful.

Another way to reduce your consumption of mains water (something that I know concerns those with a water meter) is to install a water butt. It’s easy to attach one to the down pipe of a house or any garden building fitted with gutters. If one butt isn’t enough, join more together with a linking kit.

SHINGLE MINDED

In my own garden, I have reduced my reliance upon mains water by creating a gravel garden, based on the look of the shingle beach at Eastney. The space used to be a 3.5 x 3.5m

lawn, but I removed it a few years ago and covered the ground with 7.5cm layer of local Solent gold gravel.

Once the shingle was in place, I added some drought tolerant plants. Among them were red valerian and sea kale, both common sights on our beach, along with Mediterranean species like phlomis and Euphorbia myrsinites. After they’ve established, these plants never require watering.

As much as I love lawns, turf is thirsty and goes brown at the mere mention of drought. Gravel gardens look good all year round and don’t require feeding or mowing. In fact, all they need is the occasional rake, meaning I get more time to relax in summer. Result!

THE RENAISSANCE CHOIR: “SONGS OF HOPE”

The Renaissance Choir is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026. This is one of a series of special concerts. The repertoire includes examples of the choir’s development over its life.

We will be performing our birthday commission, Schofield’s Songs of Hope, alongside unaccompanied works on the theme of reflection, salvation and joy from the 16th through to the 21st century. You can listen to both Allegri’s Miserere Mei and MacMillan’s Miserere, plus works by Renaissance composers Byrd and Victoria. These are complemented by contemporary works by Whitacre, Hill and Cage.

We offer a myriad of sound worlds within a set of related themes, capturing the beauty of the human voice.

The programme of delights comes from the award-winning Renaissance Choir, regarded by many as the amateur choir’s version of The Sixteen. The concert will make good use of the gorgeous cathedrallike acoustic of Southsea’s Church of the Holy Spirit.

I DIDN’T KNOW YOU COULD RECYCLE THAT!

Many of us recycle packaging from household goods through our green bins, which are collected regularly by the Council. Although this is a good start, the types of packaging that can be put in them are very limited. Also, putting items in these bins that cannot be recycled – like dirty plastic containers or used takeaway pizza boxes – can contaminate the whole bin and render the rest of the contents unusable too!

There are many more items we could be recycling at various points around the City that many people may be less aware of. For example, did you know that large supermarkets often have facilities for recycling packaging inside stores, near the entrance and exit doors, for items such as microwave pouches, fruit and vegetable nets, scourers, rubber gloves, and rice and pasta bags (none of which can be put in the domestic green council recycling bins)? Also, plastic tubs like those used for margarine/ice cream and plastic yoghurt cartons can be put in the big industrial orange bins, such as those at the corner of Festing Road and Highland Road or outside Waitrose.

Shops are also expanding their services to help with the recycling of the goods they sell. Robert Dyas now accepts used printer cartridges and Britta Water filters

for recycling. Boots now offers those who have their app points (for money-off discounts) to customers who use it to recycle empty medicine and blister packs, toothpaste tubes and make-up palettes.

Community-focused supermarkets such as the Co-op have containers by the door for used vape products. Sainsbury’s Local has one for used batteries.

Organisations like the Salvation Army have textile banks for towels and sheets, whilst Havelock Road Community Centre has linked up with a breast cancer charity and is providing a collection point for bras no longer needed, for which it receives £1 per kg.

A really wonderful way to help children who have lost an arm or a leg is to have the lids from plastic milk containers recycled into plastic prosthetic limbs by a local charity. The shop Tango Tea Collectables at 3, Albert Road acts as a collection point for these lids (closed Wednesdays and Sundays) and is happy to collect and pass any lids you want to drop off there to the charity itself.
